Prior to the pandemic, the food was excellent dining in. Delivery sometimes was hit or miss, but generally I once loved the place. Now, it has all new staff, different menu, and the food quality has gone downhill. My cheese omelette was overloaded with what appeared to be some kind of liquid cheese product, the sausage links were undercooked, toast was dry. There twice today, one before 6am and once around 10am. Two entirely different experiences. The two ladies working as servers prior to 6am were very professional and personable. I have the cinnamon roll - grilled, and it was the best I've ever had. I have had good and bad before, but this one the very best. Enjoyed my visit. At 10am, new staff servers and kitchen. I came in to treat someone to breakfast - also with a cinnamon roll, along with anything else desired. The two ladies seemed nice, but very very disorganized, behind for the amount of folks waiting, and sadly the space they have to work in did not allow them to pass when one was working register, fridge, trash or window. And people were either ignored or things wrong/missed. Ordered an omelette, it was wrong when it hit the window after a very long wait. They recovered quickly, but the omelette was small, for a three egg. And only ok....And that famous cinnamon roll - was smaller and I stole a bite, and I think it was grilled as requested. Still very good. Just being honest. Maybe one of them was new, but JB should look at how they interact. Would I go back - yes. For the cinnamon roll alone. I would try other things next time. But I think I would arrive at 6am, or much later in the day. Again the ladies were ok, but I would not want to chance the just ok service and food. I hope anyone new will try John Boy's. This is the worst steak I've ever had...ever. 7 oz ny strip was maybe a half inch thick. We ordered 2 and one of them was over 1/3 Fat and grizzle. Far from happy. Liver was like leather. Salad bar is small and doesn't really offer a variety. Building set up poorly. Waitress had no personality. My daughters hoagie was decent and that's the only reason for giving this place 2 stars. We stopped by for lunch...everything is home made! I had a meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy...it was delicious! My husband had a hot beef sandwich with coleslaw...both were excellent. My husband also had TWO cups of boiled dinner soup...he absolutely loved it!!! The waitress was awesome! She worked the whole restaurant by herself and didn't miss a beat!! Great little diner. I had the Kitchen Sink Skillet which I can honestly say was the best skillet I've ever had. I travel all over the state and Breakfast is my favorite meal, so when I say it is amazing you can take that to the bank. They also have toast that is homemade. Definitely a great place for breakfast! Friendly service and authentic local feel. Open 24/7. Delicious Western Omelette with a sausage gravy add on and homemade rye toast did the trick for me. We always go to Johnboys restaurant for breakfast when in Alpena. It appears that most of the local people eat there too. The food is freshly made and quickly delivered to your table-no steam tables with old scrambled eggs here. The portions are generous and the service is always very good. This is a small family-owned business and it's obvious they take pride in what they do. We have tried most of the others in the area and this place is the best for breakfast-prices reasonable too. The food was not the best and the service was quite terrible. I was going to order the chili and the waitress told me not to because she got food poisoning from it earlier in the day. And she said the chips that they used in the nachos we're kept in unsanitary conditions. After attempting to call back for another hour, (they left the phone off the hook), I was finally able to get through, the same waitress answered. After explaining that she must have forgotten about me, I realized she hadn't, she refused to apologize, saying that they were busy then and still were, and that I'd have to continue waiting. Had a delivery order from here last night. Not only did it take and hour to get to my house (only 3 minutes by car away) but it was cold and soggy when I got it. The total came to $20.10, I gave the delivery guy a fifty and a dime. He handed me my changed folded in half. He left and I took the food and set in on the table but when I unfolded and looked at the change he gave me it was one $10, one $5, and two $1s, which is only $17 of the $30 dollars I was supposed to get. He took a $13 tip on $20 worth of food, a 65% tip. read more
