Nice little natural foods store with a bunch of aisles full of non-perishables, some produce in the front, and a counter for ordering food. We bought some wild blueberries there and walked around the store to take a look around. We didn't see too much gluten-free at the counter, but everyone there was nice. There is no guarantee of great customer service anywhere. But the apparent free fall in customer service at A & B Naturals stings. For years, this store has been an oasis of good vibes, healthy food and employees who seemed genuinely aligned around better food, better health, better community and a better kind of commerce -- one that puts people and community first. What I experienced in mid-July 2026 felt more like the customer service I'd expect from a cranky big-city bodega employee pushing scratch tickets, vodka nips, cigarettes and herbal Viagra at the register. I'm a longtime, loyal A & B Naturals shopper. But maybe not anymore. I recently learned that more than $300 in receipts I had carefully saved for redemption through the store's loyalty program are now worthless. I always liked being able to redeem old receipts for a modest discount on future purchases. Apparently, that program changed during the dead of winter. Under the new rules, only receipts from the same calendar year can be redeemed. As a 20-plus-year summer resident of MDI, maybe I missed the 2025 messaging. I assume there was some warning. But the change landed harshly for someone like me who had saved receipts in good faith. What bothers me is that A & B Naturals apparently gave longtime (summertime) customers no grace period or soft landing -- no window to redeem older receipts before making them worthless. It feels abrupt and unnecessarily unfriendly to loyal shoppers. But that alone wouldn't bring my review down to two stars. What really gets my goat is how ONE employee treated me when I expressed disappointment about the change. Let me be clear: I love the A & B Naturals staff. Most are salt of the earth. They represent a diversity I celebrate, and they are a big reason I've shopped there for years. The nutritionist, in particular, is amazing -- knowledgeable, patient and genuinely helpful. But one bad apple can ruin the cart. An older employee named Katherine met me at the counter and was defensive, smug, condescending and rude. She told me I was the first person ever to complain about the new loyalty rules. When I asked to speak with the owner, her response was: "It won't do you any good." When I told her I was disappointed by both the loyalty change and the way she was treating me -- and that I was considering leaving a review or writing a letter to the editor -- she again essentially told me it wouldn't matter and nobody would care. Her tone and demeanor made it clear she wasn't interested in hearing me out or de-escalating the conversation. Quite the opposite. I felt dismissed and talked down to. There was no acknowledgment that a longtime customer might reasonably be disappointed, no sympathy, no attempt to explain the change constructively and certainly no effort to preserve goodwill. Maybe I missed the notice about the loyalty program. Fair enough. But good customer service isn't about always giving the customer what they want. Sometimes it's simply about listening, showing a little empathy and treating a loyal customer like their business still matters. That part should never expire. read more

Thank goodness for this place offering tasty vegan meals and snacks amidst all the seafood restaurants. It was kind of reminiscent of a Whole Foods, they had individually wrapped bakery items as well as a grab and go fridge in addition to standard groceries. I got a pre-packaged vegan kale pesto pasta for lunch, which was actually really really good. They also had vegan/gf cake, scones, and muffins which looked delicious. I was able to get some good to go snacks.. thai noodle salad and kale pesto pasta to go that were fine just not as fresh as before. Today I was verbally abused while shopping in the store, while wearing a fully inclosed hood with face shield. The woman yelled at me and told me I had to leave the store, that face shields are not permitted. I let her know that what I was wearing was fully inclosed and was not a normal open face shield. She continued to yell at me, while she was much closer than the suggested 6 foot social distancing recommendation per the governors mandate. I personally called the governors office this week and spoke with them about the requirements of the mandate. I was told by the governors office that masks and face shields are RECOMMENDED but NOT required per the mandate. This is discrimination against people like myself who are MEDICALLY EXEMPT from wearing masks and are going out of their way to use alternative solutions to stay safe during this difficult time and still support small local businesses. I am extremely upset and hurt that I would be treated this way, especially in a health food store. It is the last place I would expect to be verbally abused and discriminated against. read more

Awesome owner awesome local store . After owning a similar store in a different state I can say how challenging it is to operate a small grocery store. The staff at A & B are a wonderful group of dedicated locals and we as a family are so fortunate to have a store like this in our community. The raw kale salad they make with cranberries is hard to resist. In regards to negative reviews during Covid. I am not on board with the whole mask or vaccine mandates . That is one issue that has changed a bit from years ago when I was a store owner. Back then we were analytical of such an attack on our freedom and more likely to find natural remedies and even be willing to sacrifice ourselves as in war. We were the generation of children first not elderly similar to the Titanic sinking and who was saved first. That said it is not time to divide our community over a very successful fear campaign .Now that the hard to swallow truth is out of where this virus came from and the fact that masks don't work it is time to support each other and this store. So much damage has been done and it is still lingering. This is part of big pharma plan make viruses ,spread fear, develop vaccines with our tax dollars divide the country. Glad to have found A&B in Bar Harbor as it gives you a lot of better choices than Hanafords down the street. With a juice bar and lots of vegan choices throughout, it's a healthy oasis in Lobster country. Be aware that much like all tourist destinations you'll find prices a bit higher. Also be careful as the parking during peak times on Cottage St. can be a little challenging. Biggest complaint was that we were kind of disappointed they only offered pre-made sandwiches in a reach in cooler. The one I picked was definitely a few days old and not good. But, like I said I'm glad they are here and would visit on next trip to ME. read more

I am hesitant to write this review because until recently I have been an avid shopper at A & B. It's important to me that I support local businesses even if it means paying more at the register. I recently had an exchange with the owner that left me feeling disheartened. I was in the store with my toddler and he accidentally knocked over a product. The owner stopped ringing up a customer and glared at my son and me. I picked it up immediately but she turned to the customer and said in a extremely condescending voice, "Sorry, I just don't like kids stepping on our products". Shopping with a toddler can be very challenging and stressful in itself and this made me feel unwelcomed. I felt disappointed that the owner responded to this situation with such disdain. read more

Every year (for the last 10) I come to Bar Harbor in the Fall and look forward to my trips to A&B Naturals. I have had absolutely nothing but kindness, compassion and courtesy from the owner, Kathryn and her staff. I especially enjoy the sitting area to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and whole wheat cookie on the way to to Acadia National Park. As for the Mom who expressed disappointment at the annoyance from staff.... I too have felt annoyed when toddlers are not supervised while their parents are distracted. Items that are mishandled and tampered with are not sale-able and cost owners compromising their already small profit margins (especially during these last few trying years). read more

Lots of vegan goodness for decent prices! Last night, I bought dinner from A & B: a falafel sandwich, Upton's chili lime carnitas style jackfruit, and shirataki noodles. It was all excellent! I went back there today for a super foods sandwich; that was my favorite. I got 44 North decaf yesterday and Benbrow's nutty fisherman coffee today - two delicious local treats. I visited quite a few health food stores while visiting Maine but I think this may be my favorite. They had all the usual suspects - organic grains, nuts, and dried fruit; frozen novelty items; natural personal/body care products; organic bread, chips, etc - but they also had more unusual items like dark chocolate malt balls and papaya after-meal digestive enzyme tablets. My group and I picked up a bunch of snacks and random body care items and were on our way. The service is very friendly and helpful but I'd love to see more vegan dessert items. read more

This is a local store with local produce and many natural products. I purchase some natural Blueberry jam, but later found out it was made in Italy. That was a huge disappointment. Everything else was very good. I also picked up a pint of organic milk there and let me tell you something about this milk. One of the best milk around. It reminded me of the home delivery milk that came in a glass bottle. It was so fresh and creamy and can be a meal by itself. Everything else there was ok. Why does eating healthy always cost so much more. For example you can pick up 5 burgers for 5$ and 1 salad for 7dollars??? Eating healthy is a ripe off. read more

Excellent hot chocolate with almond milk!!

This place is an absolute joke. They have lattes advertised on the cafe menu. I was told I could not have an iced latte, because there was no iced espresso. As I am a BARISTA, I bit my tongue as to not have an attitude. Any REAL cafe knows that you absolutely CANNOT pull and hold espresso for more than 20 seconds. So when I ask for an iced latte, it means you should go pull a FRESH shot of espresso and add it to a cup of iced milk. I don't understand how hard that concept is. Thank god they didn't have any "iced espresso"... I probably would have been drinking day old shots. So now, I have an iced coffee sitting in front of me that tastes old and bitter. Way to go A and B. As for the rest of the store.... way overpriced. Cold beverage selection is just kombucha and water. Won't be returning. read more

This is a real-deal natural foods store. The selection, for the size of the store, is pretty incredible. I picked up some pumpkin spice Siggi's here because I haven't seen it anywhere else, including any of the Whole Foods or zillions of other grocery stores at home in Boston. There are also all kinds of Maine-made products, from seasonal produce to jams and honey to raw milk yogurt. It took all my self-discipline not to buy all of the foods. Across the street from Hannaford! Be sure to stop by; this place (in my food-obsessed opinion) beats the touristy Bar Harbor shopping any day. read more

Love love love this place! We went a lot this time when were we went to Bar Harbor. This is a local Health food place, with a Juicing Bar and they have some organic Veggies as well. The owner is AWESOME and very helpful. I was have been suffering with a knew injury for the last few weeks and she helped be get the right herbs and I am walking without pain now. I was even able to go on a few hikes we had been putting off because of the pain. I drink wheatgrass juice everyday at home in the morning. Though I order mine from Canada and its flash frozen, I was able to get fresh squeezed wheatgrass juice when I went in there. ( I am sorry to the employees, because I know its not an easy thing to juice, so for that I am grateful). And the Juicing selection is awesome. They have some pre-made's and a make your own. My husband was able to pick up some of the things he was looking for and they sold my Dr. Bronnors Peppermint soap which is not easy to find. This local business will always have my business when I am in town. Thanks again for all your help! read more

For this sized town, great source of organics, healthy food options, fresh made muffins, and by far the greatest resource around for those looking to purchase food stuffs to go. I'd rate this as a better option for drinks and snacks than more cafes in the area, especially given that they've got fresh fruit, veggies, homemade breads and all you'd need to truly stay healthy. read more

We were staying at an inn nearby and fell in love with this grocery store. They have a full stock of natural and organic items. They also have a small cafe inside the store. The prices are a little high and you need a 5$ minimum for the credit card. But we visited this place quite often to get local organic yoghurt, organic blueberry wine and beeswax candle. I went into this shop a few days ago on my lunch break to buy a DivaCup. The first thing that struck me funny was the pricing. It was claiming the "regular" price was around $48, and their price was around $38. I don't think so. The price you'd find this for in other stores at the MOST I've seen is $31-$35. It's $28 on Amazon. That's not what really bothered me, though. As a local health-shop, I could have easily overlooked the mark-up. What happened next really got me. After grabbing over $50 worth of stuff, I headed up to the register. The cashier was talking it up with one of the locals. Nice conversation, big smiles, have a nice day, etc. Then came my turn. I got no eye contact, and about three words out of her. The finishing touch would have been if she yelled "and don't let the door hit you on the way out." I've seen better customer service at McDonald's. I don't care how good their product is, or if they're the only store in 100 miles that has something I need. Very very unimpressed. I thought this place had a wonderful selection...especially since I'm 8 months pregnant... they had everything I needed. Unfortunately the staff was so uptight that I had to stop going there. They seemed annoyed by the two questions I asked and minutes after spending over $100 in the store one of their employees yelled at me for throwing a cup into a dumpster next to the store. He said that they paid for the dumpster space. I was confused because I had just bought the drink from their store. He was very rude. While they do have amazing products I won't go back. My partner and I are in A&B at least four times a week. The people there are very nice and easy to talk to. They've custom ordered several items for us on a few occasions. Great selection, fair prices for hippie fare, and awesome smoothie bar (get the PB and Yay, thank me later). We stumbled upon this little coop while we were planning a hike in the Acadia National Park and needed some provisions. I selected a naan and chicken tikka sandwich and it was DIVINE! We went to the back in the refrigerated section and they had a variety of options. if you ever get to go there, pick up the kale salad; it was so delicious. oct 17...it's been a rainy, cold day. based on comments we read elsewhere (and giving up on other establishments that were either closed or really didn't offer vegan fare...you know what we mean), we decided to pop into A&B for some soup, or find something we might microwave there (bc our ridiculous motel hasn't a microwave). we walked into the shop at 610p (it doesn't close until 7p) and was greeted with "i wish we were closed already." "i wish they would shut down the bridge." well then, how nice (and should i remind you how fortunate you are to even have business with all the sh!t that's gone down this year?!). so it starts with *miss grumpy pants and ends with a little sign that says the cafe closes an hour prior to the store. we'd picked up a couple of things, and then thought "f it," we don't even want to deal with the curmudgeon behind the counter. *dear business owner...we see you've had a lot of customer service complaints. one of your comments included that you wish you knew who it was. well, we haven't a name for you, but certainly you can ascertain who it was by the day, time, and sex. read more

I will totally give you the low-down on this spot. Bar Harbor, and Mt. Desert Island in general, is a paradise of nature full of people who, according to all sorts of studies done about privilege and life expectancy, should live forever. And this is true, if you follow Carrel and Lindbergh's bonkers plan to replace each part of the body as it fails, like a car engine. The truth is, no one in this palace of natural beauty is really, truly taking care of themselves. They eat lobster all day and shop at phony alt-grocery stores meant to give them the illusion of classy lunchtime eating. That's where A&B enters the picture. FIrst off, it is, by my rankings, tied for first with a certain bakery as "place most likely to introduce you to an attractive young person you might be caught dead with outside of the island." That counts for something, since for many of us, going to Mt. Desert can involve "going native" in ways that our friends back in Bedstuy would never stand for. That's just a little tip from an old codger who has been around the block and seen the best and worst that this island has to offer. It is indeed an island, you know, like a vulture doused in flamed, plunged into bright blue matter, and build up to the height of a whirling chariot. More to the point, this place can go toe-to-toe with any Healthy Options located in a less benighted clime. You can stock up on any supplement you have in mind unless you're the body-building type who wants to die and kill others; get pasta and bread to meet your eclectic dietary needs; and of course, purchase high-quality food items that smoke any of that junk that's peddled down the street at the local grocer. Local grocer my buns. That's a multi-national chain, selling pure rot, and so many of the "upper crust" of this country buy their burgers there. To that I say, good goodbye! I'll take real longevity any day. May I live forever, and may A&B Naturals always be there to serve my every wish. read more
