What to get: organic blueberries Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: specialty shop, buy to go Wait: 0 mins (Tuesday 11AM for 2) Parking: Street The Experience: Wow, this is exciting being the first to review this place. I hope they have continued success over the years. This place just opened in 2017, so it's in need of some attention from tourists. Located on the outskirts of the Bar Harbor shopping scene, I'm soooo happy we came across this place over summer. It was a rainy weekend, so we were unsure if we would get the privilege to have some native blueberries from Maine, but luckily we stumbled upon this little shop. It's a speciality shop with all blueberry products from a local organic blueberry farm. Who doesn't love a cute, local business? The cashier was extremely welcoming and gave us a whole rundown of their local, yet hand down business of growing blueberries. Well, the answers were all in the berries themselves when we got to taste them. Small, firm and bead-like, the sweet aroma of sun-ripened fruit wafts everywhere with a carton of these. I bought two cartons because these are like snacks to me. Plus it made for a perfect combination while hiking around Acadia National Park. You'll find wild blueberries growing around the park, but nothing beats a handful of sweet blueberries on top of a mountain summit. I'm pretty sure this is the definition of 'local flavor.'

The owners are both sweet and what you would expect from down east Maine couple. For blueberry picking it is bet to call ahead to ensure that someone is home. I forgot to call the day before so when no one answered the phone in my way over I was chancing whether they would be around. What luck! They were home, working tirelessly on the conveyor belt that is in their old garage. When I parked my car I was greeted by an old black lab ( I have a huge soft spot for black labs). I greeted him with head pats and ear scratches. The wife approached me and I asked if I could rake some blueberries. She said I could and went to get her husband to have him bring me to a good spot. I was given an overview of how to rake since it had been a year since I last visited their farm. When left to my own devices, I took in the quiet surroundings, the smell of blueberries, and the soft breeze coming over the large field of berries. What tranquility! I began my raking with first novice representation and soon starting to feel like an old pro. It doesn't take a lot to get the hang of it. In about 40 minutes or less I had picked two flats worth. I pulled my wagon over to the garage where the fun part began. The husband lugged the flats to the top of the conveyor belt. My instructions were to stand at the lower part and pick out the stems and gross stuff closer to me. After one round we took the ones on the far end and did it again. I enjoyed being a big part of all the processes which also helped the price(big fan of that). I had brought my own containers, so I didn't have pint boxes or too many ziplock bags bumping around in my car, which was a huge help and I recommend. Everyone must go here! Such a wonderful experience that I have made into an annual event.

Natural Living Center in Bangor is a top-spot for plant-based eaters like us. (I can't speak for…read moretheir non-vegan produce; but, they seem to carry a lot of local meats, dairy and such.) Their products run the gamut, including a large Asian section. Aisles are nice and wide; lots of refrigerators. Overall, it's clean, bright, and well-stocked. Produce section is, overall, good with a lot of local goods. That said, they sometimes tend to leave withering and browning veggies out on display WAY beyond attractiveness going into decay. (Our last visit had the same rotting celery on display/sale from a visit several days earlier! It was pretty gross-looking. Thus, 4 instead of 5 stars.) Other than that one glaring negative, customer service can be spotty and downright oblivious (but, it's status quo for much of today's young workforce). And, too, expect maximum pricing on, at least, plant-based/vegan products. (Can rival Brewer's Tiller & Rye for outrageous pricing!) These negatives aside, NLC offers a great variety for vegans in Bangor that can't be overlooked! (But, in all honesty, living in Bucksport, we tend to head to Belfast to shop plant-based. However, Natural Living Center recently started carrying a good number of locally-made Midcoast Vegan products (which we LOVE!), so that looks to be a lure for our steady return, for now. And the Asian section....)
