My watch quit working. In the past, when my watch quit, my experience was that whatever jeweler I visited treated me as if I were wasting his time. I do understand that it must be annoying to a jeweler to have to stop a major, lucrative project with a deadline, just to change someone's watch battery. A watch battery replacement generates nearly no profit for the jeweler. Today I decided to try someone new and stopped in to Greenan in Burtonsville. Wow, what a different experience! The man in the store was friendly, eager to help and he treated me as if I had a truly legitimate need. Within a few minutes, he had not only changed the battery, but he also tightened some pins to make the wristband clasp stay closed better. A couple years ago I stopped by both locations, Burtonsville and Downtown Silver Spring, to get an idea of what engagement rings cost. Staff at both locations were incredibly nice, VERY knowledgeable, and professional. They taught me everything about diamonds (clarity, cut, etc) and the difference in metals for the bands. Long story short... I purchased my wife's engagement ring (which she really loves), her wedding band (which she really loves), and my wedding band. I've returned on multiple occasions to have them create a necklace from an old engagement ring that looks beautiful and had them fix other pieces of jewelry. Their prices are very reasonable and their turnaround time is great (especially for us guys procrastinating)! Best place to change watch batteries. I've had them changed in big bix stores, authorized dealers, but no one does it as good as Greenan & Sons. Even with the jewelry, there is no upsell . And the service!! Makes me feel at home. read more

On May 12, 2021 I took my mothers diamond ring in the store to be resized and polished for my niece's graduation.  The store came highly recommended by my brother who has been going there for over 20+ years. I was told the ring would be ready on Saturday May 15th and that I would receive a phone call.  On Tuesday I still hadn't received a call from the store and was told that it would be ready the following day.  I came to pick up the ring and when she opened the envelope somebody else's ring was inside.  When she found my ring she put it on the slider and it was sized to a 6 1/2 instead of a 7.  I was then told that the jeweler rushed the job because he was on vacation and had a lot of jobs to deliver, leaving me questioning my decision to bring it in.  I was then told that it would be ready first thing the next day and that they would take care of it.  Once again I did not receive a phone call the next day saying it was ready, I had to call on friday to check on it and they told me it would be an hour.  Now i was really nervous about my decision.  I picked it up the next day, she told me he was done but polishing it when it was supposedly ready the day before.  Upon looking at the ring there were several nicks and I had to ask him to fix it.  She gift wrapped the ring and then proceeded to charge me the $80.00.  To say that I am very upset and disappointed is an understatement.  I feel the quality and experience was that of a kiosk jewelers in the mall.  I just expected more from the establishment. read more

is my goto spot for watch repair, battery replacement, jewelry adjustments. Always have been friendly and attentive, even when busy. They did a great job on resizing my custom wedding band earlier this year after I had lost weight and it became dangerously loose. Can't even see where they took space out of the design. I find the 'vibe' of the store very positive and look forward to the next time I need a battery for a watch. I've not purchased anything from them, but my observations is they listen well and really work with buyers. read more

Awful. The branch in downtown Silver Spring is MUCH better. I brought a watch here because I needed the (rubber) band cut down - the guy cut it down, but I realized later, not enough, and I also found later that the clasp was broken. I had never even worn it, so I think the guy had something to do with that. He charged me some large amount like $15. I also had him put a clasp on a necklace; he used a HUGE clasp that looked ridiculous, because he said he was out of the right size! I said, um. This looks awful. Please put the right size clasp on. I had to come back again to get it - the clasp was smaller but still too big, but at that point I gave up. He also charged me some overly large sum for that. But I was mostly appalled that he tried to pass of his inventory on me rather than make the right fix. I won't go back to this branch. I took my watch down to the downtown SS store to get the clasp replaced and the band cut down properly - also to get a little adjuster put in a ring. Guess what they charged me - nothing. The guy didn't say anything, so I said, would you like us to pay you? And he said, what did I really do? nothing, it was your band, I just cut it down. So he did more work, much better, and charged me nothing. We've been to the downtown branch many times and always been happy. We've been to the Burtonsville branch once and been disgusted. read more

I have used their services many times for watch batteries, watch bands and jewelry repairs. They always treat me as though I am spending tens of thousands of dollars when in reality I am spending ten dollars at a time. Years ago I did purchase jewelry but lately it has been more of just service. It does not matter as they will treat each customer with the same level of respect and quality service. I highly recommend John Greenan & Sons if you want to purchase fine jewelry or just have something serviced. Great people! read more

I bought my wife's engagement ring and the stone for it from Greenan and Sons. I had visited at least a dozen sellers in MD, DC and VA, from the stores in the mall to the Diamond Exchange to sellers with no shop who meet you at their bank safety-deposit vault. I also did many weeks of research on the internet and considered online retailers like Blue Nile as well as more commercial diamond distributers. Greenans beat everyone's prices, had the EXACT setting and stone I was looking for and had the best, most honest customer service of any jeweler I met. How are they honest, you ask? For example, almost every jeweler uses 'diamond lights' for store lighting or over the diamond case which are specially designed to enhance 'brilliance' in stones, essentially putting the stones in an unrealistic light to make them look better than they ever would outside the store. Greenans uses normal lights in their store and encourages people to take the pieces outside to see what they look like in sunlight. Have you ever even heard of such a thing before? I bet not. I really can't recommend them strongly enough, and I've been back several times for other gifts, each time enjoying the same experience. So definitely shop around, educate yourself, and then got to Greenans; ask for Billy (Greenan). BTW, It's also locally-and-family owned and operated. read more

I had a custom engagement ring made a few years ago. One of the small side diamonds fell out and I went in to have it fixed. Billy told me it fell out because I abused my ring. I asked for my ring back and walked out of the store to him yelling after me to get out! I went to another jeweler who told me the diamonds were not set correctly and can never be properly cleaned because of it. He could not correct it without rebuilding the entire ring for more than I paid to have it done to begin with. The person who built my ring took shortcuts and took advantage of me. Do not have anything custom made here and do not deal with Billy. He only cares for big ticket customers and doesn't care a bit for anyone else and he lets you know it! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL. They ruined a ring and returned it back not remotely how it looked when it was dropped off. When asked about the damage to the ring when it was brought in for a simple diamond chip replacement the owner said their customers can't expect to have their jewelry returned without unexpected alters and changes. The owner was arrogant, rude, sexist and an overall distasteful person. DON'T GO HERE! YOU & YOUR JEWELRY WON'T BE RESPECTED. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

I went in to have them fix the cracked ban of my grandmother's vintage double diamond ring. I found them to be knowledgeable, incredibly helpful, and straightforward. They fixed the band at a reasonable price, and it's good as new. I recently went back in for a small chip in one of the diamonds of the same ring, and they provided expert advice and taught me more about my ring. I am very disappointed. I left a watch for repair at the old location across Rt 29 and it was months before the watch was returned, saying it coulnd't be repaired. I tried again at the new location, brought another watch in for repair and was promised that I would hear from them in a week. After two weeks, I was told their watchmaker couldn't do it. The counter person was very defensive, said that if I knew a good watchmaker I should take the watch there. I will never deal with this store again. read more

AWFUL. AWFUL. AWFUL. I took a sterling silver chain that was broken to get it fixed. When I put the pendant back on the chain after it was fixed I realized the chain was ridiculously long..upon examining the chain further I realized it was not my beautiful sterling silver chain but some cheapy chain they gave me instead. THEY HAD KEPT MY CHAIN. When I called to confront them, they claimed that the chain may have been longer because of a tiny kink they removed...when really this chain they gave me was an obvious 3 inches longer. read more

I first went in for a small repair to my watch. It turned out to be so simple that I wasn't charged, and I knew that was my go-to jeweler from then on. My husband and I had already purchased our rings previously from a large area jewelry store, but Greenan has a fine yet comfortable atmosphere with friendly help and clean, sparkly cases. This is why when my husband's band needed to have cement removed from it, I brought it here rather than where we got it. While I waited, a woman had brought in a costume piece that had gotten misshapen. Another jeweler fixed the brooch that meant so much to her and when she tried to pay, he refused it. She said she would be back as well. That is when I spoke up that Greenan's service is incredible. In a few moments, my ring was ready and he wouldn't let me pay either. He said all he had to do was "pop it in the machine for a few minutes" and was happy to do it for no charge. Amazing people. read more
