I first skated the arena in the early '70's. If memory serves, the west rink was outside. Windy days sucked. Now both sheets are indoors with wonderful resources to tend to their upkeep. They have a quaint little pro shop which has the basic necessities to potentially save the day. A bit pricey but, then again, you wouldn't do your equipment shopping here unless you were in a pinch. I know of a few instances where kids have needed an emergency skate sharpening. Critically important at the speed and level they play at. A basic little snack bar is available when you enter and restrooms just in case. Plenty of metal bleacher seating in both arenas and picnic tables in the lobby in case you get too cold. If your new to this world of ice sport spectating, bring a blanket and seat cushion. At least for the first visit. They have a fully functioning ice resurfacing machine and a small ever changing staff to maintain the building. Skate rental is available. Open skate and pickup hockey is offered. 1st time to skate here and the rental area was super slow with only one person doing everything, and the skate rentals were old and falling apart. these were my only complaints other than that the rink area was pretty much like any other i've been to, they had a pretty normal looking food stand area too but didn't order anything. cost of skate rental $2 cost of admission $4 read more

I will echo Janelle's sentiments about the children. Extra star for the close proximity to my house, and okay, I get it kids, you can all skate better then me, good job! But there wasn't a hockey game in progress, so stop skating around like there is. Although I did very much enjoy the children, all decked out in their hockey gear, probably about 6 or 7 years old, starting to pummel each other on the ice, until someone in charge came to break it up. The ice was in rough shape, but I guess when you are paying $4 (plus $2 for skate rental) for open skate, they don't care enough about you to run the Zamboni across the ice, but they did when it was time for the pee-wee hockey game to start after we were finished. Now, where can I get some of those PVC walker/skate practice type things the little ones were using? I'm sure I could kick some butt attached to one of those. read more

All hockey rinks should have sliding doors so you can easily enter and exit the rink with your hockey bag. That gives JLA a 4 instead of 3 star rating for me. JLA has two sheets of ice that are in good shape. There is television in the lobby area. The lobby area has good bathrooms also. There are raised bleachers if you want to come watch cheer on your family or friends as they play hockey. I saw most of the other reviewers were concerned with rentals. I have never rented skates at any rink or eaten at any rink, so I can't speak to any of that. The rink is conveniently located near a few watering holes so if you want to go out with your team after your game, there are lots of choices. Would I shower here? I haven't yet. read more

Oh, the humanity! What a terrifying place. Compared to the handful of other ice-rinks in the metro area, this might be the worst one. There is an open skate from 9-10'ish on Saturday night. For $6 you get access to the ice, along with a skate rental. There are both figure and hockey skates. Being Ferndale's own Mario Lemieux, I opted for hockey skates. Woe! I mean, they were woeful. As was the condition of the ice. I guess you can't expect smooth ice at the end of the night, but it was pretty awful. As you are navigating this obstacle course, you can guarantee being nearly cross checked by idiots large and small. In sum, theoretically a great way to spend an hour on Saturday, but never again! read more

The service at John Lindell Ice Arena was horrendous. They treated myself and my friend poorly, for example we were going to sticks and pucks and they said that it was full, and then they let another person go on. They didn't respond when we asked why he got to go on but we didn't. This infuriated me and I want to warn people for the future. I would recommend not to waste your time at this arena. read more

The locker rooms and ice here get three stars, but the facility employees bump it up a notch. Everyone I have dealt with is friendly, pleasant and helpful. They remember those who are at the rink frequently, as well. The ice itself is soft and since I grew up skating on natural ice, I prefer harder ice and have some issues playing games here (which is sad, because it's my home ice). They had some problems in the summer with humidity and condensation which make the ice uneven at times. The locker rooms are well-sized and wiped down frequently, so I have no complaints there although others have voiced some opinions about the conditions of the locker rooms overall (older, a little smelly). It's a hockey locker room, though, so if it didn't smell horrible I'd wonder if I were in the right place. All in all, a nice rink with a great staff, where I have enjoyed playing many hockey games. read more

I'm not sure how or by what means, but it works out that this entire area all the way to Commerce is filled with sporting areas in these tight event venues. From indoor golfing and indoor ranges to outdoor volleyball and everything else we would like to do outdoors in the winter but cannot. I don't believe adventure zone holds any local records for their rock wall or any of their other challenges, however, what they do have is a little bit of everything for you to enjoy. I do recommend, if you're in the area, at least stop by and see what's there for your future visit. I promise you this place is good for the family, a first date, or just about any kind of event even those related to work. The atmosphere here would easily tend to cater well to a business meeting of mine for example that of a high energy group with high-energy ideas. read more
