But, because the adjacent Dealey Plaza was rightfully designated a historic landmark, this unassuming sloped green space has historical weight and has remained untouched. It really is nice that there's no Bubba Gump next door, or people selling bubble wands from carts. There are two X's in the road if you want to get a good shot.

Along with "Three Mile Island" and "The Bermuda Triangle" and "Area 51" and "Ground Zero," you can include "The Grassy Knoll" in the list and while some millennials might not know what it means, they've heard the words from their elders. For us, it instantly conjures up an era like a cultural code word. This is the spot where the world lurched on November 22, 1963. Where Abraham Zapruder famously stood with his 8mm color camera to film President John F. Kennedy driving past in an open top limousine. You can stand here in the same exact spot where he did, you can picture that car going past, see the trees and hear the shots ring out in Dealey Plaza. The pink dress, the jumping Secret Service agents and the car accelerating under the railroad bridge heading to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Walking through Deep Ellum in Dallas, I looked up and there he was--the Traveling Man. His shiny metal body caught the sunlight, and there was something both futuristic and kind about the way he stood there--one foot forward, a smile on his face, and a little bird perched on his hand like they were old friends. It didn't feel like just a sculpture. It felt like a moment--like he was part of the city, watching over it, maybe even cheering it on. Kids were climbing on the smaller birds at his feet, couples taking selfies, a guy playing guitar on the corner nearby. All of it somehow felt right around him, like he belonged there and always had.

This local folktale draws inspiration from art. An old…read morelocomotive was buried beneath an elm tree. One night a splash of gin spilled onto the roots, giving life to the locomotive. The locomotive transformed into a robot, rising from the ground where three birds stood. There are three different sculptures, which can be viewed as three different parts of the sculpture. 1.Awakening-displays traveling man head emerging from the ground, and it's surrounded by the 3 birds. 2.Waiting on the train-Traveling man is seating on the ground with a guitar, smiling. 3.Walking tall-38ft tall walking man with a bird on his wrist. He is walking to the Deep Ellum train station. Deep Ellum neighborhood developed around the railroad, so there is a deep connection between these two. Easy to stop by and take photo. Pretty cool.

The benefit of the addition was that the large bronze relief sculpture of Butch Cassidy & his gang got moved out of the building lobby to a prominent place on the side of the addition. The building was completed in the early 1900's and has been very well maintained throughout the years. The owner (who resides on the top floors) also provided the sleeping panther fountain in the park next door - also a must see with its beautiful Corinthian marble. A great part of your downtown walking tour.

This sculpture is a prophecy of what can happen once the birds "awaken" and start using technology to their advantage to take over humanity like some sort of cyborg pigeons like in the Terminator movies. These chromed out birds look menacing- you going to try and shoo away a 800 pound parakeet when they want your crackers?! No! These giant sculptures of birds are terrifying. Be sure to keep all technology out of the hands of birds so they don't develop the ability to 'Awaken' and take over humanity. If you don't believe me regarding the menacing characteristics of this sculpture, notice how it's in front of a mural of Godzilla?!

Shade is scarce, though the tall, lush trees and grass fields nearby provide some much-needed contrast. Speaking of these trees, walking further down the road you will notice a cluster of trees and an electronic sign stating the eagles have landed. Lo and behold, it is currently eagle nesting season! The sign cycles through various messages highlighting the necessity of minimizing noise and keeping distance from the eagles. Ideally, your viewing experience would be greatly amplified with a set of binoculars, but even without zooming in you can see the large nests perched up above on large branches. Good place to stop by before the lake.
