I was a new patient today, first time in. I was really happy to get an appointment as I just called yesterday. While I was filling out the paperwork, I witnessed the receptionist, Anne, personally calling Tufts to help a client figure out her insurance plan. She was on the phone for about 10 minutes, then guided the woman through the next steps (calling MassHealth) in the office. I was very impressed with her generosity and specialized attention (we all know how hard insurance companies are to talk to). I went in for an eye infection and the doctor was nice and listened patiently while I gave him all the information. He checked out my vision, put gels in my eyes to see unhealthy spots on the surface, examined the oil glands around my eyes, dilated my pupils for testing, and took photos of my eyes for glaucoma testing. There was no co-pay or fees when I left, so I guess my insurance (Tufts Health Together) covered it all. The only feedback I could give to improve this practice is to give out those cheap paper sunglasses to patients if they get their pupils dilated. If I didn't have my own sunglasses with me then the sunny walk home would have been painful! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Saragas for five years now... I first went in with a large Chalazion that he surgically removed for me with 100 percent satisfactory results. Unfortunately for me, that was only my first Chalazion of many and I eventually developed Blepharitis, which I see him for every 3-6 months. Over the course of the last five years, he's worked with me tirelessly to find relief for my condition & symptoms and never makes me feel self conscious about my relentless push to find a viable solution. He has a great manner about him, tons of insight and always thinks of different approaches when things aren't working and celebrates when things are. My condition has ups and downs, but I can always call at any time and they'll do their best to get me in as soon as possible. Dr Saragus and his team are the best! I always feel taken care of - truly professional and kind. I brought my 93 year old mother to Dr Saragus because he cares. He spent time with her so she felt seen, heard and respected and not just another patient in a crowded clinic which was our prior experience. Since I had seen Dr Saragus before bringing mom I knew he would be the best doctor for her. As far as my care goes I also feel 100% seen, heard and cared for. Update to prior review: I am leaving this practice. After having read some of the other filtered reviews of this practice (click the link on the left bottom corner of the review section), I have found that I am not the only person that has been pressured into glaucoma testing, and without a clear discussion of the costs (I was explicitly told by the receptionist that Dr. Saragas wouldn't see me for my annual eye appointment without my first completing this testing). And, as the last straw, the receptionist recently refused to fill my contact prescription - not because it had already expired, but because it was going to expire in a few months. At multiple turns, I have been treated rudely and felt financially pressured by this practice. Don't let Dr. Saragas tell you (as he told me multiple times) that these filtered reviews were posted by angry rivals of his: from my own experience, they all ring true. read more

I buy glasses online. This is where I get my prescription. Dr. Saragas has the latest high-tech equipment for a fast accurate result. The automated machine took about 30 seconds. He then fitted me with lenses in a contraption that he strapped to my head so I could walk around the store experiencing my new prescription. He verifies his work manually. If you're ordering online make sure you ask him to specify PD (pupil distance). For $29 you can't beat it. I looked at some of the hidden whiney reviews. I specify prescription only when I book my appointment. An exam is more work and will involve drops in the eyes that sting. Oh my, if that doesn't make you whine, maybe the price of an exeam will, or Mary at the front desk who obviously knows how to deal with whiny complainers. These folks are totally professional. I've used yelp for years and this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. I agree with the other poster, the receptionist here is very "difficult". I had a 4:00pm appointment and showed up 10 minutes early to fill out paperwork. I did notice the sign on the receptionist desk stating that no food or beverages were allowed and that if any furniture was damaged the client would be responsible for new furniture. I had an iced coffee with a lid on the cup with maybe 1/4th of the drink left. The receptionist told me she had to "take it away" from me. It was demeaning and I felt like she was treating me like a child, not trusting me to handle not spilling an iced coffee with a lid. I got a feeling for the kind of experience I was in for and sacrificed my drink simply to avoid conflict. In the forms they asked me to complete I was asked for very specific personal information like my social security number, my drivers license number, and the name of a friend/family member that didn't live with me. I didn't feel like that kind of personal information was required for a contact lens exam so I omitted it. The appointment was at 4:00pm and the doctor saw me at 4:30. A 30 minute wait isn't terrible, but it isn't great either. They did try to pressure me to buy contacts (which I told they I was going to purchase online), which I declined. The eye exam itself went okay ($59 without insurance) and the doctor was friendly. I got my prescription, but my entire interaction with the receptionist and very out-dated service model left a bad taste in my mouth-- the receptionist treated me like I was at her mercy... Needless to say I'll be going to another optometrist next time. read more

In need of a contact prescription and some new glasses one sunny afternoon, I wandered into Dr. Saragas' office near my apartment in Davis Square. I hate spending loads of money just so I can see, so tending to my vision is always a bittersweet affair. Fortunately, happening on such a friendly and attentive local operation lessened the blow of such an un-fun expense. While the receptionist, Mary, might seem a bit brusque at first, don't be fooled. She fit me in for a contact exam without an appointment, and was candid and right on-target when she helped me pick out frames afterward. Dr. Saragas was personable, funny, and explained every step of the exam. It turns out that my cheapo chain-office prescription was a bit off, and that they had overlooked a mild astigmatism. He leveled with me about how far I needed to go in correcting it, though (i.e., were more expensive contacts really necessary?), and also told me I could get away with regular lenses for my new frames instead of paying a bit more for a thinner version. All in all I'm excited to pick up my new glasses next week, try some new contacts with no commitment past the free samples, and to have found an eye doctor I'd gladly share a beer with. An exam, contact prescription, cute frames and lenses with anti-glare ran me just over $300, so my budget will sleep easier than it might have elsewhere in the area. read more

Dr Saragus was very thorough and gentle during my exam. He took his time and did a very thorough job. Unlike modern places where it's a get in get out sort of thing, Dr Saragus takes your the health of your eyes seriously. I felt reassured to come here, he is the best. read more

Dr Saragas has been my eye doctor for two years now. He's taken great care of my eyes and everyone else on his staff has been super nice.

This is the worst eye doctor I have ever been to. I was born with mis-shaped eyes, hence astigmatism, and have been to eye doctors since the age of 3. Luckily, they are correctable to 20/20. I needed a new prescription for contact lenses, and went to his office, it being convenient to where i lived in Davis Square. As I sat in the waiting room, I soon noticed a number of elderly ladies being told to 'come back next week', and it seemed like this was a regular thing to them. Looking back, i see that Mr eye Dr Saragas was charging Medicade for each return visit. I finally got seen, and he dilated my eyes, not a normal procedure for a regular eye check up. He then looked in my eyes, and told me i may have issues with retina spots. He also pressured me to get Lasix surgery, performed by him, of course ( i have no interest in getting Lasix, and am told I'm a bad candidate). Subsequent visits to other eye doctors confirmed no 'retina spots'. He then excused me, and I asked for my contact lens prescription. He said to come back the next week for it. He was not concerned if I had driven there, and my diluted eyes might be dangerous to drive with. I came back the next week for my prescription, and was met with the nastiest front desk clerk ever. I told her in was there for my prescription, which I never got, and she only wanted me to pay a co-pay for a new visit, saying 'you can't have anything for free'. I turned round, went home, and called my insurance company to complain. The creepiest part was a voice mail from Mr Saragas in the next few weeks wanting to 'talk this over'. i didn't return the call. read more

I had a very difficult experience with this practice. I have a benign, but unusual issue with one of my eyes and I made an appointment with Dr. Saragas believing he would be well-equipped to deal with my eye. After originally scheduling a simple annual eye exam, I was told I needed to return for additional tests. In all, my annual eye exam turned into 3 co-pays and over $120 in contact fees (including an up-front fee for not having an original copy of a very old contact prescription). Subsequently, I have received a number of unexpected bills in the mail following my appointment. I have reached out to my insurance company to figure out what I was billed for as they refused to answer questions. Additionally, Dr. Saragas led me to believe he was consulting with another specialist, yet I have received no follow-up, nor was I able to track down my records upon calling the office. I feel nickled, dimed and swindled by this practice and plan to file additional complaints. I don't believe you will receive a poor exam, but I do believe they are trying to tack on charges however possible. read more

I am finally over the bad customer experience I had with Mary, waiting for an extended period of time and getting a parking ticket as a result (Max quarters), then being tested for glaucoma before i could get a contact lens exam... I might have considered returning because of the convenient location of this practice. However, I am still creeped out every time i drive by (I live in teele square). This was the worst practice I've ever visited and I"ve had glasses almsot all of my life. I want to qualify and say that Dr. Saragas was very thorough and I got the right prescription. I've had trouble getting the right prescription in the past, so I'm thankful that it seems to be right. What I feel so compelled to complain about are three things 1) not having the services I was recieving properly explained to me, i.e. had they been described to me I would not have consented to certain aspects of the exams 2) recieving astronomically high suprise bills 3) the receptionist. She is one of the meanest people I've ever encountered. I'm transfering to a different pratcie because of the horrible receptionist and the unexplained services at outrageous prices. And true to my experience at this practice there is $20 fee just to have my records sent to another doctor. I will never be going back. read more

I would shy away from this 2 person business every time. Mary at the front desk is a real piece of work, and most of the time just she is just plain rude. Dr. Saragas makes me wait at least an hour every time I come, ON TIME, for my appointment, I have gotten 2 parking tickets because I didn't put the max amount of coins @ Davis square parking meters... I came to Saragas eye because I needed updated contact lenses, this has customarily been a painless task with my past eye doctors. 3 appointments later I finally got the prescription in the mail and the prescription was blurry for near sighted viewing. They charge you hundreds of dollars for a field of vision test and to take a picture of your eye (3 hours of time). So after my HRA was drained and I spent hundreds more out of pocket on contact lenses I am not satisfied, and I have no choice but to use contacts that are less than ideal. Dr. Sargas is an absolute expert! Rest assured that you will receive the highest quality of service. My entire family has started visiting Dr. Saragas and his knowledge and skill level are very progressed and arugably one of the best! Most recently my sister visited him for a routine eye exam and because she sustained a trauma to her eye when she was a young child, Dr. Saragas has gone the extra step to take images of her eye to track any progress as she ages. He goes above and beyond to ensure you get the professionalism and expertise that your EYES deserve. Just today, my mother called me from Greece and was having an issue in one of her eyes and she was very worried. I instantly called Dr. Saragas' office and explained that I have my mother on the other line, the Doctor came right on the line and talked to my mother and explained to her what might be going with her vision and told her to see a Doctor in Greece and went as far as to tell her what to say and what to expect from the exam. It is very rare that a Doctor would spend time outside of a "scheduled" appointment to help a patient at the drop of a dime. That is the kind of service you should expect from Dr. Saragas. Very unprofessional. Mary at the front desk was openly rude to me more than once, and treated me like a criminal when I asked her to charge my flexible spending account. Dr. Saragas himself is nice enough, but I was NEVER taken in on time, or even close to on time, even when I arrived for my appointment early. When I went in for my first appointment I specifically said I wanted to be measured for contact lenses, but he still put dilating drops in my eyes, so I had to stand around with his obnoxious receptionist for an extra half hour or more while my eyes recovered enough to have the tests that I asked for in the first place. When the contacts he sent me home with weren't right, I had to wait three weeks for a follow-up appointment. When I finally got fed up and told them not to order contacts for me, as I would prefer to buy them elsewhere, Mary ignored me and ordered them anyway. This was over a year ago. I have asked them repeatedly not to call me, but to this day they still call my cell phone. I had to threaten to call the police yesterday. I'm sure that in a month Mary will be calling me again, despite my increasingly firm requests that she stop. It's bordering on harrassment at this point. read more

Wow! I called to inquire about having an exam done to get a new prescription for my glasses/contacts. Mary, the "receptionist", was extremely short, rude, and difficult to communicate with. She seemed very confused as to why I didn't want my eye health checked, even though that's not what I said at all, and proceeded to be even more confused that I wanted to pay out of pocket because my insurance doesn't cover vision. What an awful conversation with such a nasty woman. Shame, because I've read Dr. Saragas is a decent doctor. Although I don't trust a doctor who puts his practice in the hands of such a rude, unsocial-able woman. Certainly no way to treat a potential new patient, or ANY patient. First, the actual exam and visit with Dr. Saragas was excellent and professional. He obviously is a gifted eye doctor. My issue and disappointment, and warning, is with his staff. When I called to arrange an eye exam, I went through great strain to emphasize who my insurance company was (Tufts) and that I wanted whatever would be my covered annual eye exam (a regular eye exam). I wanted to pay only my co-payment, and to forego any non-covered services. After arranging my appointment and having specified my request to receive only what was covered, I received my referral from my great primary care physician, called Tufts to confirm that I was up for a covered eye exam. When I arrived for my appointment one week later, I reminded the receptionist, who was quite curt and disrespectfully impatient with me, that I requested that for which I was covered. Then I had a great eye exam. Three months later, I received a bill for over $100, for "uncovered service charges". The form bill specified that the patient was responsible for paying the remaining charges and that all questions should be directed, not to the doctor, but to the insurance company. When I met with my insurance rep, he explained that the doctor performed very expensive and unnecessary services with his new computer camera. An excerpt of a letter of concern sent to the doctor follows: "...My frustration comes from being charged for services three months after receiving them, disempowered with the lack of knowledge at time of receiving services as to what is covered and what is not. As a layman (non-medical professional), I simply do not have the vocabulary to ask specifically what is involved in an eye exam, what is expected to be covered and what is additional service over and above eye exam coverage. In seeking to learn how to better navigate the health care system, I have several questions. Besides my initial inquiry made at the time of the appointment, what more should I have done? Should I ask the physician if the thing s/he is about to perform is covered right before receiving it? Should I have asked my insurance company to send to me a list of covered services and given it to you and the receptionist? Do you as a physician have access to such a list before the patient receives care? Should I have asked you or your receptionist to attest to my initial request that my exam encompass only what is covered by Tufts, perhaps in writing? Such questions, I promise, are not rhetorical but very sincere and respectfully posed. I would never refuse payment for services rendered, nor expect charity, and have good intention to pay you upon learning how to navigate the eye exam system in the future..." In reply, I received no answer to my questions but rather more form letter-bills. I have paid the remaining dues, but will not return, given that the doctor's response to my questions were non transparent, unresponsive and cold. I remain disappointed, because when I was in exam with him, I was impressed by what I thought was a very professional provider. read more

Difficult receptionist makes me give 2-stars for service. I don't like to ding places for service, but this one soured my hour. I'll be happy to upgrade if I ever get to Dr. Saragas himself. So, this review is to help improve the office customer service, as well as warn others about a confusing issue with insurance. In short, I have a pretty good Tufts Health plan which includes optometry services through EyeMed Insurance. Dr. Saragas' office is listed as an EyeMed provider, but actually does NOT (as of this moment) perform JUST the optometry service which EyeMed covers. In other words, that guy who got a $29 eyeglass prescription was lucky, and maybe Dr. Saragas changed his policy afterwards. The receptionist kept beating me over the head that Dr. Saragas is a "specialist" and an "ophthalmologist", and that what I needed was merely an "optometrist." Bottom line: They bill BOTH Tufts Health for a specialist's ophthalmologist examination, AND EyeMed for my once-every-24-months vision examination (ie. eyeglass prescription). I need to get a medical referral from my primary health provider to go to Dr. Saragas. Why would my primary refer me to an eye specialist, if I only need to update my eyeglass prescription? Anyway, I'm waiting for a nice followup and I'll be happy to update the review. read more

What a wonderful experience. It was easy to make an appt, and the doctor was incredibly personable and clearly an expert. He took time to chat before we began, and told some really funny stories - this is a guy you wouldn't mind having a beer with. As others have noted, Mary can seem brusque at first, but she is just efficient and knows her business. She was very sweet and helpful when I was selecting new frames. He will do tests which may not be required for your exam. That will put you in a situation where expences are not covered by your insurance. Be aware when he takes photograph of your eyes for future references, that is $120 from your pocket upfront. Making money with a smile is the motto. Its business not help!!! read more
