John was amazing. My recessed lights turned off after I swapped some outlets out. I thought I blew something out. John spent 30 minutes on the phone with me trying to help me solve my problem so he would not need to come by and charge me. I took his advice and did what I thought was right and sent him pictures and he said I was doing everything wrong. He came by between a project around 6 pm at night. He spent an hour teaching me how to replace outlets and switches and not electrocute myself in the process. Then he went around my house trying to solve my recess light problem. Took awhile and ended up finding out it was a completely different outlet that I installed wrong that caused it. He also took a look at my circuit breaker box to make sure my house was rewired correctly. His service was top notch and I was very thankful he took the time to teach me how to do things. John helped me out with a commercial job. I had a 3PH motor which I couldn't get rotating for the life of me. Turns out he found an issue with my breaker and I was missing a leg. Of 8 companies I inquired, only 1 took the initiative to give me a call. That was John Watson Electrician. What great timing! He called me when I was at my job site troubleshooting power limitations for seasonal lighting on a large property. He was able to assess the situation and come up with solutions from photos I sent. John found that in order to run enough uninterrupted power, the house would need a dedicated breaker and circuit for the outlets on the outside of the house. Because the house has no crawlspace, it wouldn't be easy to route a new circuit to the other side of the house. He suggested a few workarounds. Although I haven't decided yet, I now have some ideas I can pitch to my client once they are ready to upgrade their house to really make their holidays shine! read more

My review is based on a phone call and I do not know John Personally. I originally called john after an "Electrician"(vulture) wanted to charge me a lot of money. This man was in my house for 5 mins before wanting to charge me $400 to search for the origin of my electrical issue which I'm sure he had some idea where it started. I said no thank you,searched online and found John. I called him and to my surprise, he was trying to help me trouble shoot on the phone. I had read the reviews on yelp and thought he probably knows these people...until I experienced the same situation lol. He attempted to help me over the phone after telling him about my experience with the "other guy". Anyway he stayed on the phone with me for about 45 mins, this is unheard of these days. He got me started on my project but I still had to bring in a friend from work to continue trouble shooting. He didn't have the parts but left it easy enough for me to finish the job. I finished the job by installing two GFI outlets. The point of my review, John is a rare find these days. He seems to really love his craft, cares about his customers and makes sure they are satisfied with the end result. I will use or recommend him for future electrical issues. UPDATE 2017- Recently I had to call Mr. Watson for another electrical issue. He came out, did some trouble shooting and repaired my electrical problem. While he was trouble shooting, he explained his method to detect the origin of the problem and along the way he also educated me on electrical basics. A few months ago, a few of the exterior lights and outlets in the back of my building went out. Since this happened shortly after I had my building repiped and was confined to the back of the building, I thought it might have been something the plumbers did. John came out with his assistant and fixed everything in a couple of hours and sent me an invoice electronically promptly. He was courteous on the phone and answered all my questions. Additionally, I was planning on some renovations in the future and had questions about my electrical needs and he was kind enough to give me his opinion and advice on that for no charge. (Obviously, if I had asked him for a full electrical schema, that would not have been free.) At the time, he charged $150/hr because it's him + a helper and he charges by the hour (no minimum). But if he doesn't need the helper, then he won't charge for him. [$150/hr sounds steep, but other places charge $75/hr for one person + travel, so this is pretty typical. As I was enjoying a morning cup of coffee (7:45am) looking out backyard while a light rain was coming down, I noticed electrical wireline connecting garage to house was sparking and smoke was emitting from wire. When I went outside to cut branch that was close to make contact with wire, exposed wire popped and more sparks came out. I freaked! So now that I've set up scenario.... called John Watson and he was very professional and accommodating. I sent him a pic of wire smoking. Wow. Came home today -- half my home was out of power. Looked on Yelp and called John. Left a message. I thought it would cost me a bundle. Within 45 minutes he returned my call. Patiently stayed with me on the phone for about 30 minutes as he talked me through a diagnosis: It was probably a power company issue, he said. I tried to pay John for his time but he would have none of it. Put in a call with the Edison number that John gave me. They put in a priority service call. UPDATE: I called John back and had him give us a bid on a lot more work because obviously I was so happy with him! Even though his bid came in REALLY high, we liked him and were just going to let him do the work anyway. We agreed to his bid and then had to wait for a bit in order to come up with the money to do the agreed upon work, which was fine with him because he said he suddenly got really busy. When we were ready to set up a start date, both my husband and myself emailed him several times to get the project going, and we NEVER heard back. It was so strange! We kept trying to reach him, and asking whether we had done something wrong, etc., but just no response. It was very weird. He had been over a couple of times with his guys to make sure to give us a fair bid, but then suddenly just disappeared. He just never ever responded to us ever again! We ended up finding another electrician, that we have been working with since then (who actually did a great job for 1/2 the price! ). So sad! It's wonderful that others had a great experience with this guy. Me, not so much. I called on Friday around 4:30, left a message saying I wanted an estimate for a rewiring job for a low-amp wire from my home to my AC. Based on another estimate I already had, this was not going to be inexpensive so I thought more than one estimate was appropriate. As of Tuesday night, this guy has still not called me back -- nothing, nada, zip, zilch -- not even to say "Oh, I'm too busy; call someone else." I live in Pasadena, so I'm not out of his way. Well I always turn to Yelp and I thought the feedback on John as a local electrician sounded great. We set an appt for 5pm and he didn't show until 6:10. Granted he called and let me know he would be late but it still was annoying as I had left work early. A month later, called him again to install a light in the bathroom. He said he had an 8:30am appt so he would be at my house at 9:30 to 10:00. When he didn't show up, I left a message for him at 10:30 and 11:30 but a day later he still hasn't shown up or even bothered to return my calls. So he might do great work, I wouldn't know but he would have to actually show up to find that out. Perhaps he should give a couple hour windows since he can't make it on time. Not calling back though is unprofessional. read more

John Watson is a fine electrician who is thorough and thoughtful. His crew are great at what they do and love doing it. They are all a pleasure to work with. I hired John to upgrade the electrical box on my old house (1905) which was a task in and of it self, but working under the scrutiny of the ever watchful and picky eye of the city inspector he was thrown several curve balls which he handled effortlessly. The first day I met John he was just giving a general look at my house to see if an upgrade was necessary (which he did not charge me for) and he was there when my appliances arrived. Without being asked he joined in and helped me remove a frame to make way for the fridge. The SEARS guys just stood there and watched as John physically helped me solve the problem! The lovely previous inhabitants of my place left a lot of bootleg electrical work. Who decides to DIY with electrical wiring? Bad idea. I was left to fix this mess with a two week deadline. I didn't have time to get a bunch of quotes but I think John's rate was competitive. He came first to give me an estimate and get a sense of the work then returned on a Saturday to perform the work with his assistant. He took out all the illegal wiring and brought everything up to Code on the main electrical panel. He was very polite and explained all the work. I was looking for an electrician to help me solve a mysterious electrical problem with my pool pump. I saw the great things people had to say about John, so I gave him a call. I'm sure John is a great electrician, but, more importantly, he's a solid guy with integrity beyond measure. John spent about 20 minutes on the phone with me to troubleshoot my problem. He could have (and most others would have) said he couldn't diagnose my problem without being on site, but John took the time to diagnose the problem and let me know that him coming out to see the pump (and charging me for it) wasn't going to change the fact that I likely needed a new pump. He could have charged me for a service call but didn't. He could have dismissed me but didn't. It was like talking to a friend who happens to be an electrician! I called John because my power was flickering. He came to the rescue within a few hours and swiftly deduced that the problem was most likely with the power company. He called them on my behalf and amazingly they showed up while we were still chatting. John explained the situation to the employee who checked out a few of the connections. The following morning the power co tested the line and confirmed the power was indeed flickering outside my home within their lines. After they replaced/tightened several connections the problem was resolved. John refused to accept any payment for his service call -- or reward for his staring role in fixing the problem.
