Sadly this place won't likely be around much longer but when the owner and the staff don't have a clue about service and appreciate long time buyers, they just don't deserve to be in business. I've lived in Castle Hills since I was 6 and have been trading at this store for 16 years. My visit this week shall be my last. Once again, hoping to save some time parking etc at one of big box stores, I stopped in to buy a vacuum breaker for one of my hose bibs. When i asked a young man stocking shelves if he could help me, he looked up and said "I'm new here and really don't know anything", there wasn't any attempt to find someone who might know. So into the abyss I headed towards the plumbing isle. At the head of it was the owner and a long time employee. As I approached, the man holds up his hand and says, I'll be with you in a minute and off they went. After a strained search to locate the part, I head for the door. Seeing both of them talking to another buyer ( it was obvious the owner had no clue what the buyer needed, the employee was explaining a solution as the owner looked on), I said, "I can't wait any longer". The owner and employee chime "ok, bye!" Sadly another trip wasted, only to be ignored and on my way to Home Depot. Small businesses built America and I work hard to trade with our neighborhood providers. This store doesn't deserve my loyalty. Good riddance. read more

Did you know that there are no longer any Ace Hardware stores in San Antonio, or New Braunfels for that matter? This store was sold about 6 years ago and is now called Johnnie Chuoke's Home and Hardware in the quaint little city of Castle Hills. This Johnnie is quite the character; as a a matter of fact, you can buy his 14th edition of his book at the check out counter. It contains information on hardware solutions, musings, and other personal stories from his life, or you can listen to his radio show on AM San Antonio radio. Besides the typical hardware items left over from Ace, they have crafts, designer jewelry, and home adornments (think World Market or Kirklands). They lack customer service big time, so don't go in there asking too many technical questions, if you don't want smart ass answers back. Trust me on this. Just go in browse, shop, and don't ask too many questions, especially you women; some of the employees haven't read Gloria Steinem's latest book. read more

I came here after a trip to home depot. Home depot didnt have the stretch wrap I needed but this place did. The staff was so cute and sweet. Very friendly over the phone and in person. Shopping here is an interesting experience. For the most part, you will find that they staff is VERY knowledgable and that they can address even the strangest problems in plumbing fittings or fasteners and paint but they are limited by their stock. You can feel good about supporting a local small business but be prepared for some really high prices. The PVC fittings and pipe are 2x or more what is charged at the big box stores and the electrical prices are also quite high. That said, I go there regularly because of the expertise, quick in-and-out and I simply want to know that they are going to be around. read more

I really like this store. The staff is in the know on most any DIY project and are friendly. I have started coming here more during COVID-19 pandemic to skip the "capacity limitations" you incur at other large home improvement stores on the weekends. I want to get in, get what I need and get out. No crazy parking lot, no crazy crowds and no trying to track down an employee at this place. I enjoy shopping in this family owed hardware store, when I'm in San Antonio. They have products that are not found in other stores, like Home Depot or Lowe's. The gift shop is amazing and I can always find gifts for others or for myself! The owners do an excellent job of displaying their merchandise and things are easily found. I personally, think the customer service is great! Staff is friendly and very willing to accommodate with whatever you are searching for. I highly recommend this family owned business and I will continue to shop there whenever it is convenient for me. read more

I had to walk the store for 15 minutes to find someone to help me. Of course they didn't have what I needed. A bit of a waste of time.

This place is perfect to pick up a hardware related item and an awesome spot for some fun shopping! Yes, you read that right. From a large array of Tyler Candles to decorative yard signs, serving dishes, frames and art for the home. They even have a nice selection of greeting cards. I stopped in here to have a key made for work and then again later in the week for some plastic ties to create my own baby proofing gadget for our cabinets, which are too wide set for anything store bought and too thick to install anything with nails without using a drill. Both visits the staff were helpful in directing me to find what I was looking for, even helping me select a greeting card. A little bit of humor too in the price total for a simple duplicate key order. I will be back to take advantage of the affordable knife sharpening. read more

My last attempt to help the small business. I've been in this store likely well over 100 times over the 16 years I've lived in Castle Hills and today was the last. When I went in, there was a young man organizing paint cans and when I asked if he could help me, the reply "I'm sort of new here and really don't know anything", ok, so I continue to walk to the back, where the owner (Johnny Chuocke's daughter and a long time employee) see me and say, we'll be right with you and the proceed to walk right by me. Ok, so I wait a couple of minutes and begin to walk out. When I see them, both are assisting another customer. It is obvious, that the employee knew what the customer needed and the owner was just listening in, I wave and say "I'm not waiting", to which they both reply. Ok. Do we wonder why small businesses don't make it, when there are so many choices for consumers? There were as many times as I made the trip there thinking, the size of the store and parking will make the purchase worth the additional cost, only to find they didn't have what I needed so there was 20 minutes wasted making the round trip drive or an employee who was marginally qualified to help or just plain dismissive? Sadly, it is likely to be another business that will go by way of the DoDO, but when you have a DoDo owner and staff, what can you expect? read more

I can't remember a time when Johnnie Chuoke's place was not a part of our hardware life, but for a number of years we just stopped at a big box store, and did so until finding help became an exercise in futility. We've gone back to Johnnie's place, now on the second generation, and almost always find what hardware we need. Add that to the fact that there is always someone to help, and that's the first place we go. read more

It's convenient and close by to where I live. Service here sucks unless they know. The people at the counter are a bit stuck up and some of the floor guys are not that friendly. I purchased his book from HappyHandyman.com as a Christmas gift last month and they charged me extra for shipping that was not included in my total OR on the receipt they emailed. Thinking it was an honest mistake, I tried to call, only to discover none of their phone lines were working numbers. I sent an email and received a response telling me the shipping charges were stated in the product description. Product description? I didn't read the product description. I read the price, the final amount with taxes and shipping to be charged to my card, and the amount on my receipt they emailed. Not only does this company hide fees, they add them unbeknownst to you AFTER you agree on the final total, hit "submit," and receive the receipt. If I didn't check my bank statements I'd never know this had happened. This is shady, dishonest, and fraudulent. A company who makes changes to the agreed amount on a customer's credit card without their consent has no excuses. The economy is hard enough without having to watch your back against sleazy businesses like this one. read more

The "gift shop" is a bunch of nonsense that maybe someone's grandma might enjoy. However, I got a big bag of potting soil for $8.99 that I think goes for about $12.99 elsewhere. I'm super disappointed by the fact that they had absolutely no decorative gardening pots, clay only. I had higher expectations. read more

When you do these reviews, and click 5 stars, you get a drop-down that includes, "as good as it gets" -- well, in my personal experience that accolade goes only to Elliotts True Value in the Industrial area of Dallas. I guess it is more than 6 times the size of Johnnie Chuokes, and I believe they actually do carry everything. But it's in Dallas and we're in San Antone, and at Elliotts you pretty well need roller skates or a motorized vehicle. But if we are talking about Family Owned and operated NEIGHBORHOOD Home and Hardware Stores, Johnnie's is a joy. I don't know square feet, but it isn't small. Since few businesses in this area post their street numbers prominently, it helps to know that Johnnie Chuokes is located just north of Lockhill-Selma and NW Military, just north of a water tower. I'm a tall guy age 75, and entered the store at the same time as a short lady of similar age. She appeared to know the store, probably a regular customer. Every employee I encountered in the store was outgoing, helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable. One was a daughter of Johnnie Chuokes Jr; I felt she must be the stores present manager. Her workdesk is back in the true hardware area, and she herself helped me find the Phillips headed brass screw I needed and had been unable to locate at three other hardware stores. The front part of the store has items which fit into the category of "Home Store". I did not look carefully in all these areas, and noticed that there are some decorative items, but I did not feel that I was in a gift store. I imagine that in the months immediately before and after Johnnie Jr died, that there was some turmoil in the management of this distinctly family owned enterprise, but it certainly appeared to be a pleasant place to shop for home and hardware needs. I live south of Uvalde and generally shop for hardware there, but the next time I have to go to San Antonio for hardware, I will very probably run over to Johnnie Chuokes and tell these nice folks "Hi!". I found them to have a better than average stock, and a pleasant atmosphere. read more

I live in Castle Hills and have stopped in over the past several years. As a small business owner. I always try to shop local. Every time I have gone in, it's a lukewarm reception, no help finding what I needed, or a hello or "come again". I've thought maybe they were having a bad day. Today, I stopped by to buy a few toggle bolts. I went to the register to make my purchase. The lady asked me how much they were. I went back and found the prices and came back. The lady was on the phone so a young man said he could help me. He rang them up, told me the price, I paid and he handed me the receipt and just walked away! There is never a "hi, how are you", "did you find everything okay", "thanks and come again". They always just ring you up, give you the price and that's it! Terrible customer service. I have spent a lot of money there. I just can't go back anymore. I have tried to avoid the big box stores to support them. They don't seem to care much for my business or their customers. This store used to be Castle Hills Ace Hardware. It was my go-to place for both home project odds and ends and good customer service. The business changed ownership some time ago. Just this past week, I bought one ceiling fan and ordered 4 others. Got a call that the fans had come in earlier today. Unfortunately, when I got to the store and asked about picking up my fans, I was told by the clerk at the front counter that they were on a dolly in aisle 14. As it happened, aisle 14 was all the way at the back of the store. So I, as a senior with physical disabilities, dragged the dolly from the back of the store (backwards but not in heels) through the store's narrow center aisle. The dolly was a poor excuse for anything bearing that name. It had bad "behavior" of a wobbly grocery cart and was very difficult to manuever. I spent a bunch of money and all I got was the fans... no help getting the fans out of the store nor into my car. I was very tempted to just tell them they could keep the fans and to refund my money. I have loved this store for many years, mostly in its previous incarnation as an Ace store. This experience will probably cause me to drive to one of the big box stores now, even though they are no where near as convenient. Too bad this small retail store doesn't take its customer service more seriously. read more

So rude! I had a TERRIBLE experience here with the clerk named Larry. I wanted to buy paint so I said "Hey, can you help me?" and he said "You say 'hey' a lot, don't you? Well I won't be addressed in that disrespectful way". When my mouth dropped open in surprise he said "Surprised, huh?" I replied "Yes, I feel like you are scolding me and that is strange because I am your customer". He said "We are done here" and threw down my paint sample. I am still in shock and I hope that someone talks with Larry about the aggressive way he is treating customers. read more

I rented a carpet "steam cleaner" from these guys today and could not be more disappointed. It seems straightforward at first and convenient to get the cleaning solutions that we needed as well as the equipment rental at the same location. However once we got the machine home and follow the directions and started trying to use it the machine began dripping buckets of water out of the bottom. Fearing an electrocution hazard, I turned the machine off and called the hardware store. I spoke with a woman who informed me that the only time she had ever seen that was when the machine was overfilled and to remove some of the water. The area to add cleaning water and solution was less than half full but we tried spraying out some of the water and it continued to leak. The second problem with the machine was that it is not in fact a steam cleaner at all! The heater either doesn't work or doesn't work well on the machine that we rented because it just sprayed lukewarm water all over my rug. This time my husband called the hardware store and was informed that it will not actually make steam. No helpful hints. No attempt to rectify the situation. I don't know what to say about the customer service at this place. Finally whoever rented the machine before us must've had about 25 cats that peed all over their carpet because as soon as we started using it my whole house was full of the smell of cat urine. The machine was obviously not cleaned between renters, which is disgusting. So my husband is wasting precious weekend hours returning the machine to the hardware store right now to try to get a refund and we will be renting a Bissell from H-E-B. Extremely disappointed with the quality of the rental and the service that we received. read more

Good customer service is alive and well at this location. I went in to get some reinforcements for an antique chair I bought and Paul not only made them more sturdy he added slats that were missing. He worked with me for almost an hour and tried to not charge me for his labor and only charged for parts. I made sure he was compensated but I was in awe of how he went beyond the call of duty to please a customer. Well done and I will be back. You would never get that kind of service in a big box store. I have been doing business which this hardware store, since it's opening. They have always been helpful and can usually answer any question I have. I lost my husband over 4 years ago and I never had to do "Honey Dos", because he was not only better at them, but felt he should do them anyway, which he did. Now I am in charge with everything in the household, so I am learning about all kinds of "Honey do" jobs and I always go there to get whatever I need and they have been very nice and helpful to me. I have rented their carpet cleaner twice in the last few years and they put it in my car for me and told me the productsI needed to do the cleaning, which all worked very well, so I rented it again a year or so later. I live very near and HEB & a Big Lots, but I was so please with the carpet shampoo cleaner that I went a little further just to rent it again and buy the products I had used before. I love to just go & look around in that nice store and sometimes I find things that are quite useful for me. It is hard to believe they haven't been helpful to other customers, because I have friends that go there too and never have heard them complain.
