Been wanting to come here since moving to Chicago, but haven't had the opportunity until recently when friends were in town. We were already in the area to check out Frank Lloyd Wright's studio and then came here for lunch afterwards. We were lucky that it was a Monday at lunch time and not a more traditional peak time to be there because we got a parking space fairly quickly and even though we saw the line out the door, it moved very fast. It's very much a cash-only and no-frills type of place. Don't come here expecting them to be super friendly to you. You go up there knowing what you want to order and they are quick and on it. When you're paying, they're already getting the other customer's (behind you) order. We went for an Italian beef sandwich to split as well as a side of fries and an Italian ice. Everything was excellent. Definitely the best Italian beef I've ever had and one of my friends said it was one of the best foods he had on his week trip here. Ambiance of Johnnies is a quick come-in, order, and head-out kind of spot, quick kind of service, with a few tables outside if you want to eat there. Johnnie's Beef is known. It has a reputation. One that it upholds with every hot dog and beef sandwich they serve. You've undoubtedly heard the rumors and they are true! Choosing an "off" night (example: a weeknight) or during a less-than-ideal time (example: during a snowstorm) will give you the quickest experience for Johnnie's as the line can get LONG and parking is terrible (tiny lot). Note: this was my second visit as my first attempt, on Father's Day 2025, was a magnificent bust. We had no line and plenty of seating this time! They have a big menu, but save the cute stuff for a follow-up visit and get a beef (& hot dog is really hungry). Do yourself a favor and get an Italian Ice too, time of year is irrelevant. You can thank me after your tastebuds recover from being overwhelmed. Is the food THAT much better than other spots, you ask? Not handedly, no. But the whole experience, especially if you wait in line (in the sun as there is zero shade), is what makes this place great. It really is a delightful Chicago experience. Idk why it took me so long to visit this Chicago classic. I've never been a huge fan of Italian beefs or maybe I just wasn't trying the right places. This place changed my husband and I's opinion. Lines can get long. We waited maybe like 15-20 min but the food is ready pretty quickly once you place your order. This place is cash only! The Italian beef had the right amount of juice for me. I was scared to get it dipped cause I don't like my food soggy but honestly this was perfect. The hot peppers give it a great kick! Fries were crispy and delish. The first time I came here I was so disappointed that I had to give it a second chance. I came back with my mom and daughter and again...really disappointed. My mom's favorite food is an Italian beef and were local, so were no dummies. I always see a line out the door here and i just DONT GET IT. Something's are just delicious in their own spicy way and that's exactly what I'm gonna say about that beef and sausage sandwich I had here the other day! So it was all about the beef and sausage sandwich for me and I will say I found the sausage to be spicier than the peppers themselves which was totally awesome as anything that's hot I'm game for, while it wasn't overly bearing hot it just had a good flavor to it with every component especially the beef itself which honestly I kinda wish I would have only gotten the beef as I just enjoyed it's flavor on that yummy bread with the sweet and the hot peppers! They had a tamale here too and it was ok it was 4 small pieces that were easy to share or had a good corn flavor to it while it was yummy It really reminded me of the ones that you can find on the corner of Rampart & Beverly in LA as the flavor was very similar to me. One of the biggest goodies here was that lemon ice like that was sooo yummy such a good lemon flavor all iced out it really hit the spot for being one of the best lemon ice I've ever had! Johnnie's Beef has hands down the best Italian beef in Chicago! I wasn't sure what to expect. I came here on a Saturday around 1pm and the line wasn't too long. The menu is straight to the point and the restaurant itself is pretty small. You'll be standing eating inside or you can go outside where they have tables. The employees are incredibly efficient! The line moves quick and I recommend reviewing the menu ahead of time. For the food, I ordered the Italian beef, French fries and Italian ice. The first bite of the Italian beef was incredible. There was so much flavor and the peppers gave it a great kick. I ended up ordering another one. The fries were fresh and I would get again. The Italian ice was the star as well. It was so good! Oh, how I miss that one big guy that used to say, "gimmie a beef, drag it, and a bag to travel". Or, "gimme an ice, cap it, next!" Johnnie's is an icon, just based on the experience of listening to that guy talk. Ah, but he's long gone, and new ownership abounds. But the beef is still great. One of the best beef sandwiches around, combos that are seasoned just right, and Italian ice That hits the spot on a hot summer day. I think the hot dogs are just a throw in, and the fries are decent. But it's the beef that keeps bringing you back. Not much ambiance, unless you want to stand and watch the cars roll by on North Avenue, but the smell of the sausage cooking is intoxicating. We stopped by Johnnie's Beef and tried both the Italian Beef and the Italian Sausage. The Italian Beef was outstanding. We ordered it dipped, and the beef was tender, flavorful, and packed with rich gravy without becoming soggy. It lived up to the reputation that so many Chicago locals talk about. The Italian Sausage was also excellent, with great flavor and a nice balance of seasoning. Both sandwiches tasted fresh and authentic. The service was fast, the atmosphere was classic Chicago, and it was easy to see why this place has such a loyal following. My friend and I are from Iowa, and have never had a proper Italian Beef sandwich. I myself am a new Chicago resident as of this August. A few beers deep, my friend and I sat in a bar and were doing research on where to get a great Italian beef around Chicago. We ended up landing on Johnnie's after extensive research on Reddit forums. The 50-minute commute to Johnnie's was a turn off in the beginning. There was always the risk of driving all that way and it being closed on special occasion, or the beef sandwich not being at its best for some reason that day. Nevertheless, my friend and I took the 50-minute drive and found a parking spot and a business that immediately greeted us with delicious smells of all kinds. We both ordered an original Italian Beef sandwich, fries, an Italian ice, and a side of au jus. What followed after the first bite was what can be best described as a euphoric feeling. All of the pain in your body and the worries of everyday life faded away while I ate this delicious combo. The Italian Beef sandwich's beef was slow cooked and seasoned to perfection, and the bun was generously doused with au jus. The fries were high quality and fried very well. The au jus was so good that you could take a tub of it home. And the Italian ice was a perfect refresher to follow a messy meal. If you live in Chicago and still haven't been to Johnnie's yet, check it out. --Location/Parking-- Located in in the middle of Chicago, there was parking for at least 20 cars spread out through the parking lot, but I came during pre-lunch hours and there were plenty of spots. I might have caught it before the dinner crowd so I didn't have to fight for parking. --Ambience-- A simple hot dog stand vibe where there were only one way entrance that leads up to a single cashier and next to the line was a standing only bar table to eat. I recommend taking the food outside to eat on the benches or taking it to go because of the limited space. --Service/Staff-- Because of the limited menu there was not much of a wait. I think it took me longer to put my money away, because my food was ready before I could collect the change. The staff were super efficient. --Products/Service-- I ordered several things on the menu to try out from Italian beef to the combo of beef and sausage with hot peppers. I also order the hot dogs and fries. I recommend the Italian beef which they were are know for, I want to order it next time sans sausage, but with the hot peppers. --Capacity-- Indoors can hold 10 people waiting in line. There is no indoor seating. There are 5 or 6 out door tables, but in the cold you might want to eat in the car or take it to-go. --Overall-- Recommended Italian beef spot. It is September 10 10 PM. I just left Johnny's beef and this is the first time I have been here. I saw all the great reviews so I was excited and I got the beef and sausage combo. I am fairly disappointed because first of all it was dry there wasn't a lot of AU on the sandwich. Second, the beef was minuscule. They hardly put any beef on the sandwich and the sausage was overdone so in my opinion, I would not go to Johnny's beef again. It was subpar and I do not recommend. read more

Know your order, cash only, and eat. They mean business and their food speaks for itself! We came by on a Sunday right before opening and there was already a line at least 20 people deep. We knew we were in for a treat. By 10 minutes after opening the line was around the corner and at least 50-60 people deep. But they had 6 guys on the line and they were cruising through it! I swore I was in and out in a matter of 5 minutes. They have a small but mighty menu and a super efficient crew. We got an Italian ice (small one and that was still tons!), a dipped Italian beef with sweet and hot peppers, a beef combo, and fries. After terrorizing the rotisserie chicken at Fresh Thyme Market, I jay walked directly across the street to hit the legendary Chicago institution that is Johnnie's Beef. I was only in Chicago for 4 days so I had to maximize my time. I hopped in a line that was down the block and took in my surroundings: Customers sitting on these benches outside that have likely been untouched since 2004, eating their sandwiches and drinking their Italian lemonades like they were in a 1980s fast food ad. Beautiful. As the line moved pretty quick, I noticed they had yellow jacket traps with 50+ yellow jackets in each bag. This is a slight tangent, but I've eaten 100+ rotisserie chickens outdoors this year, and when the summer came, wasps began to SWARM my birds. We've been in a 12 round war for the chickens all summer and I should have just invested in one of these traps. What a genius idea. After about 25+ minutes, I got to the front of the line and a wave of anxiety flooded my prefrontal cortex when I read a sign that said "Cash Only." I was cashless. I asked the employee where the nearest ATM was. He pointed across the street and said "when you get back, just come back to the front of the line I'll take care of you." Wow. NY has never seen this level of kindness. As I took a step towards the doors, I heard a ladies voice say "Oh I can just give you cash and you can venmo me if that's easier!" This had me BLUSHING. Even typing this back I'm getting all happy again. Her name was Annie, and I was shocked that someone could be so nice to a random stranger. Annie spotted me a $20 and I venmo'd her $25, because that's how my momma raised me. I told the employee it was my first time and asked him what the move was. "You should try the sausage and beef with hot peppers if you think you can handle it." I did that and a side of fries, and their legendary Italian lemonade which is essentially shaved ice. When in Rome. There were no seats, so I jay walked back across the street and ate it on a table right outside of Fresh Thyme Market. This legendary Chicago sandwich was good. Really good. I'm not going to sit here and say it was the best sandwich I've ever had, but I think what missed for me was the scoop gravy on top wasn't my favorite thing. It just sort of made it a bit too soggy. I want to note this is purely personal preference, and it was still 100% worth the wait, but just didn't "WOW" me. The Italian lemonade however was PHENOMENAL. It really gave me life back. I'm sitting here in Hawaii typing this up, reminiscing on this experience, and really wish I had another one right now. Fries were smacking too, and I love their branding. It's maximalist. I'm a fan of Italian beefs, having primarily had them at stands at ballgames for years and thought those were good.... Boy, had I been missing out. These are the genuine article here, buddy. I mean, next level. They are simple & there is nothing fancy about them, but the quality of ingredients & time-tested simplicity of them does the heavy lifting in its own. Fresh, soft Italian rolls, thinly sliced beef, wet (dipped in an au jus style gravy optional, but really should be mandatory if you know what's good for you) with your choice of hot & sweet peppers (I like both). No cheese. It doesn't need them. It soaks through the paper they come wrapped in, you're gonna wear it (I mean, at least I did) and they are an absolute mess.... And SO worth it. Just wear it & grin, dude. If this doesn't make you happy, I don't know what will. Fries are perfectly golden brown & crisp. They also have a version that has spicy Italian sausage with the beef, but to be honest, the beef by itself is even better, though it's still worth a try if you'd had the OG version & want to try something different. We drove and found the parking situation to be fairly challenging, so plan time accordingly and perhaps find parking while another person waits in line. The line was fairly long but goes by quickly as the workers in the back pump orders left and right like fast food but by no means the quality is like that - the food is quite delicious and affordable. We probably waited 10 minutes tops and the customer in front of me commented that this is not bad as sometimes he would wait over 30 minutes. We got the Italian beef with hot peppers, double sausage with sweet peppers, side of fries, and Italian ice (frozen lemonade slush). The Italian beef is dipped so it can get soggy quickly, so I highly recommend eating it on the spot! The hot peppers here were delicious as I generally don't like pickled stuff but they do it well here, pairing the other sandwich fixings well. There's a good amount of meat so even though it looks small, I felt fairly satisfied with half of a sandwich. The double sausage is good but a little burnt. I would focus on getting the Italian beef and skip the sausage items. Fries were okay but only a few bucks (I think it was $2 something). The Italian ice is refreshing for a hot Chicago summer and it was about $3 for 16oz (a smaller 8oz was 90 cents cheaper so we might as well just get the 16oz). There's a good number of tables outside but we opt to stand and eat in the small counter inside as we didn't want to deal with flies and bees and pretty much outside tables are almost all taken from people trying to take advantage of the nice Chicago weather that is fleeting. read more

It was out the door, but to their credit, it moved fast. From the moment we joined the line to when we got our food, it was only about 20 minutes. Once you order, your food is in your hands in like 30 seconds, they're pros in there. We grabbed a table outside (despite the crowd, there's a good amount of outdoor seating), and I went with the classic: Italian beef, wet and dipped, with hot peppers. We also split a bag of fries, which was only $2.25, huge value. I got a drink too, and my whole order came out to just $12. That's wild, especially when you compare it to downtown prices. It honestly felt like a steal. As for the food, incredible. The Italian beef was probably the best I've had. The bread held up perfectly even though it was drenched (in the best way), and the hot peppers added a solid kick without overwhelming the flavor. It's a simple sandwich, but Johnnie's does it perfectly. The fries also deserve a shoutout. They tasted almost exactly like McDonald's fries, crispy, salty and nostalgic, but somehow even better. Yikes, it was 1:30pm on a Friday and there was a pretty long line stretching to the back of the store!  Based on previous experience, it likely moved pretty quick but I was only interested this time in picking up a gift certificate for someone whom I knew would enjoy. Letting folks know I just had a question to ask, I courteously stepped in front to the counter and the busy but cordial manager Jesus confirmed that they had $10 gift certificates and also said no need for me to get in the long line.    He took care of me on this visit with two $10 certificates and I was very appreciative.  Yaay for Johnnie's!, and next time I will stay for one of their tip-top delicious Italian beefs! ps and pro-tip:  if you come to this relatively unassuming area at a Friday or weekend lunch time, be ready to search for a street or alleyway parking spot.  There are quite a few eateries in the area and not really enough parking at peak times! read more

Food is amazing and best price. Doesn't cost an arm and leg for dinner for two. Beefs are so good.

Goated beef stand year after year! No frills, no inside seating, cash only! There will be a line out the door but don't despair it will move quickly.
