Convenient fast casual restaurant near Ashland CTA. I've been to Au Cheval which has really hearty delicious burgers at a premium, versus this place is more casual and better value. You can get a burger for $11. The burger here is more basic but still good, but definitely nowhere near the level of Au Cheval. We also got chicken tenders with garlic aioli which was very good - I'd say above average. The garlic aioli is so good that I used some for the burger too to enhance the flavor a bit, as I thought the burger did not have a lot of flavor. Regardless, the food here is delicious and good price
This was our first time trying Small Cheval. The burger was quite good, perfectly a little bit of pink in the middle and very fresh. The chocolate milk shake was delicious, reminded me of the chocolate frozen treats at baseball games. The fries were the biggest disappointment, not very fresh, too crispy and lacking in the full potato filling you expect from fries. Would return and just not get fries. We went on a Sunday for lunch and it wasn't very busy, our food came out quick within 10 minutes. A fun little stop!
the burger to bun ratio was off but the sticky date cake concrete was AMAZING. The service is similar to a fast food counter but still good and the setup/seating is picnic style.
Stopped here before a show at bottom Lounge, always a great trip to get a burger! Tried out the chicken tenders and they really didn't have a taste it was super weird! The staff is always great and polite.
My husband and I got back from our honeymoon overseas and Small Cheval was our first priority upon arrival to Chicago. I crave this burger at least once a week and cannot speak highly enough of the service, the staff, or the CHOCOLATE CAKE CONCRETE. Will be back (a lot)... see you next week, Small Cheval.
This location has limited seating. The cashier was really nice! The tenders I had were delicious because it wasn't full of breading.
A recent DoorDash order from Small Cheval was disappointing. Despite the quick delivery, the food quality and missing items were a let down The two patty burger had one cooked medium rare and the other overcooked and grey. The order was also incomplete, with only one set of fries received instead of the two ordered, and the side of garlic solo was missing as well. The fries were also thicker cut than what I expected - are they not skinnier/shoestring style? The thick fries were bland and dry. Two stars as I know they can do better DoorDash or not. I've had Small Cheval at Old Town location and I've had the Au Cheval location but this one missed the mark where the other locations went above and beyond that mark.

Small Cheval is a fast-casual outpost of Au Cheval, with a few locations around Chicago. It was almost 9 pm when we stopped in but they are open til 10 during the week. Nate and I shared a burger and fries. Order at the counter and they'll give you a buzzer for your food. It came out quickly and was pretty tasty. I am not a huge burger lover, but it had good flavor, was seasoned well, and had the perfect amount of toppings. The fries were okay, but not my favorite style. They have a bar with boozy milkshakes, beer, cocktails, etc. but we stuck with water this time. On our second time visiting, we were in the neighborhood for a show at The Cobra Lounge later in the evening and had parked our car nearby. This time I ordered the 4 piece chicken tenders with honey mustard - YUM! These chicken tenders were fantastic. I know they're known for their burgers, but I'm definitely getting the chicken tenders again. Super juicy, flavorful, and a good portion. Nate loved his burger. We also got drinks and sat on the patio, which is nice but a little loud with the L running through. We'll be back!
Good burger, good service, more or less reasonable prices. Undercooked fries, though. There's not much more to say, aside from the fact that I'd be happy to return any time I want a burger. I'd either skip the fries or ask for them to be well done.
The husband and newly graduated son were very hungry after commencement. Our son chose Small Cheval because he loves their cheeseburgers. There was no one in line when we arrived, our order was taken quickly. Unfortunately, the wait was long after that. When we finally got our order, my son's shake was not ready. He was told that it would be brought out to him. Several minutes later he went up to check on it -- the team member just pulled it out of the fridge. Fortunately, the food was really great -- cheeseburgers, chicken tenders, fries and shakes were all perfectly prepared and so, so good. The place is well-maintained. There is limited seating inside and several tables outside (weather permitting).
Au Cheval-lite. I think you can get almost everything you want in an Au Cheval burger except for the thick-cut bacon and the egg, so if that's a dealbreaker, then skip. It's fast-food order and takeout style and they have milkshakes, beer, cocktails, and outdoor seating. If the tourists at Fulton Market District Au Cheval make for a 2-hour wait, this is an easy, cheap alternative.
We tried going to Au Cheval, but too long of a wait so we went here instead. No wait here and lots of seating. Easy parking on the street as well. Nice decor. Ordering was fast and easy. Got the double cheese burger and fries. As always, delicious burgers. Also got a chocolate shake which was tasty as well.
Always quality food and efficient service. Burger guaranteed to be on point! This location has a huge outdoor dining space, which is awesome for Chicago warm weather.

4.75 overall Service 10/10 Environment 10/10 Street parking but there is a 15 min waiting area if you are getting it to go. The burger was cooked perfectly with a little crisp on the edges and tasted wonderful. The fries were also cooked perfectly and not burnt or over cooked (thank goodness). Beer options were decent. I had to pick an alternative option because my first choice was out. It was a cute patio and clean bathroom. I would return to the restaurant again. read more
We swung by small Cheval after a solomun concert to grab some quick bites. We got the double cheeseburger, plant based burgers, fries, chocolate milkshake and some beer. We have to place the order at a counter and collect our food from the counter. The food was tasty and came in fast. The portion sizes for fries and milkshake were huge but the size of the burger was relatively small. This place was clean and the ambience was nice too. They have outside seating as well. Overall, this is a great alternative to Au Cheval for quick bites. read more

Friendly and fast service when not busy. Love coming here for my gluten free fix of burgers, fries AND chicken tenders! A GF cheeseburger is pretty pricey because it isn't the biggest serving, but it's worth it when I crave a cheeseburger. I really like the fries and you can request for unsalted if you preferred. The chicken tenders are amazingly gluten free, but you got to eat them as soon as you can or they aren't really crispy anymore (fyi, they're gluten free, but not dairy free). Pickles are tiny, so if you want extra, you might want to request for extra extra (they give it to you on the side). Haven't tried the house cocktails or boozy shakes, perhaps will try it the next time I actually dine in. I saw they had soft serve with hand dipped cones, GF cones available! read more
Small Cheval Cheeseburger: Chicago's Au Cheval serves up arguably one of the best burgers in the United States. The downside is that the wait times can be a couple hours long, but I highly recommend trying it at least once. On the plus side, Au Cheval's spin-off restaurant Small Cheval offers a cheeseburger almost as good as the original with little to no wait. I believe there are nine Small Cheval locations in the Chicago area. The cheeseburger comes with two juicy beef patties (served medium), melty American cheese, crunchy pickles, onions, and creamy dijonnaise. The bun is just as vital to the beef when it comes to a great cheeseburger. Small Cheval serves theirs on a lightly toasted buttery brioche bun that is perfectly soft, chewy, and proportional to the amount of beef. For $13 you would be hard pressed to find a better burger in Chicago. Au Cheval is still the gold standard as you can add an over easy egg and thick cut maple glazed bacon, but Small Cheval is definitely no ersatz Au Cheval. I keep coming back hoping it'll hit the same way it did when Small Cheval first opened, but those days seem long gone. Every visit is worse than the last. My double burger was cooked rare to medium-rare all the way to the edges of both patties, and the flavor and quality have steadily declined. This visit finally pushed me away for good. read more

The outdoor patio is great vibes, and the service was good! You can never go wrong with their fries and truffle sauces. The burgers here for some reason didn't taste as good as the other locations, but were still decent. Heard the fried chicken sandwich my friend had was good! read more

Can't go wrong with a burger from Small Cheval! They're sooo good and cooked to perfection. The shakes are worth the splurge too. We didn't get the fries on our most recent visit but we usually enjoy those as well. This particular location in Fulton market has limited indoor seating but in the warmer months they have a large patio! read more
Delicious and juicy takeout burgers without the long wait from Au Cheval when one is on the go. Every bite is full of flavor, that has you wanting more. It was my first time ordering from small Cheval as my husband and I wanted a break from cooking, and honestly such a great decision as it satisfied our burger craving. Not pictured are the fries and the garlic aioli that gives it perfect balance. As for the soft serve, with the extreme heat the city was going through, it was the best way to refresh and take a little break while waiting for the order to be ready. read more
Wagyu Truffle Cheeseburger It's tasty, as it should be for almost $25 The meat is very tender. Worth it to try once. If $25 burgers were the norm, this is a very tasty option. Great ample seating. Small cheval is the sister of Au Cheval but a lot more casual and convenient if you don't want to wait / make a reservation for Au Cheval! This location in West Loop has a ton of outdoor seating when the weather is nice. I actually loved this burger and the garlic aioli is delicious! Dipped both the fries and burger and it made it even better. Tasted like a pretty high quality burger for a fast casual place and would definitely come back to try the veggie burger and milkshakes. read more

Just moving from NYC and living a few blocks from small Cheval it is safe to say that I have been here seven days in a row every single day thanks to Daniel the manager and the entire team here that are so welcoming friendly, but by far the most welcoming and high-quality food, clean environment so much so they remember my order to the tea and even my name when I walk into the door cannot thank Daniel and the team enough. I will be back tomorrow and the day after and the day after and the day after, if I could give 10 stars, I would thanks again, Daniel and team. read more
Like many people who come to this location, it is most likely because you were not willing to wait 2+ hours for a seat at Au Cheval. Likewise, if you're around this part of West Loop around dinner time, I would much recommend The Loyalist right down the street from here if you're craving a burger (though getting a seat there can also be quite a wait). With that being said, I think Small Cheval is a very solid replacement option and a lower price point. They make a very solid cheese burger, fries are great, and the aioli they have in the tiny condiment container is absolute crack to me. My friend also ordered a root beer float and seemed to quite enjoy it. There's some seating inside, but I can see this place really shining in the warmer months where they have a ton of outdoor seating. It is right off the train line though so it can get a little noisy. That being said, a very solid lunch option in the west loop. A bit on the far west side of it, but certainly wouldn't be mad to flock over here for lunch with a friend. read more

A burger at Small Cheval is always the best move to make! I adore this location in Fulton Market - their large patio is great and it's located on a quieter corner. Paid street parking is available around the area. I always get a signature double cheeseburger with a side of fries. The burgers are always so juicy and good and you can add things like lettuce and tomatoes by request! I'm looking forward to coming back to get some ice cream! read more
