We swung by small Cheval after a solomun concert to grab some quick bites. We got the double cheeseburger, plant based burgers, fries, chocolate milkshake and some beer. We have to place the order at a counter and collect our food from the counter. The food was tasty and came in fast. The portion sizes for fries and milkshake were huge but the size of the burger was relatively small. This place was clean and the ambience was nice too. They have outside seating as well. So nice, we visited twice! Twice on two separate Chicago visits, that is. On our first visit, Nate and I needed a quick bite to eat after a show at City Winery nearby. Small Cheval is a fast-casual outpost of Au Cheval, with a few locations around Chicago. It was almost 9 pm when we stopped in but they are open til 10 during the week. Nate and I shared a burger and fries. Order at the counter and they'll give you a buzzer for your food. It came out quickly and was pretty tasty. I am not a huge burger lover, but it had good flavor, was seasoned well, and had the perfect amount of toppings. The fries were okay, but not my favorite style. They have a bar with boozy milkshakes, beer, cocktails, etc. but we stuck with water this time. On our second time visiting, we were in the neighborhood for a show at The Cobra Lounge later in the evening and had parked our car nearby. This time I ordered the 4 piece chicken tenders with honey mustard - YUM! These chicken tenders were fantastic. I know they're known for their burgers, but I'm definitely getting the chicken tenders again. Super juicy, flavorful, and a good portion. Nate loved his burger. A GF cheeseburger is pretty pricey because it isn't the biggest serving, but it's worth it when I crave a cheeseburger. I really like the fries and you can request for unsalted if you preferred. Like many people who come to this location, it is most likely because you were not willing to wait 2+ hours for a seat at Au Cheval. Likewise, if you're around this part of West Loop around dinner time, I would much recommend The Loyalist right down the street from here if you're craving a burger (though getting a seat there can also be quite a wait). With that being said, I think Small Cheval is a very solid replacement option and a lower price point. They make a very solid cheese burger, fries are great, and the aioli they have in the tiny condiment container is absolute crack to me. My friend also ordered a root beer float and seemed to quite enjoy it. There's some seating inside, but I can see this place really shining in the warmer months where they have a ton of outdoor seating. It is right off the train line though so it can get a little noisy. What does it make sense is that there were several people standing around that work there and only one person working a register to take orders.
