This hot dog joint is pretty good. I don't really eat hot dogs but I figured might aswell try a place that is dedicated to making hot dogs. I was impressed. I got the Italian hot dog and a regular hot dog with chillies and the works. The service was nice and the restaurant was clean with plenty of seating. J&H has been around since 1939, however current building is fairly new with plenty of parking. Friendly staff at registers. Can be a line at times but it moves fairly quick. Ive been to most of the infamous NJ hot dog joints and J&H is one of myh favorites! Besides 2 types of hot dogs ( more on that later), they serve cheese-steaks ( beef or chicken), burgers, roast beef sandwiches ( hot & cold) and more. Plenty of sides other than french fries and onion rings ( which were both very good). Other perks: home-made rice pudding...cannolis...and $1 refills on fountain sodas! But it's all about he hot dog and they offer 2 types that are grilled perfectly to a nice crispy snap ( especially the wiener): Wieners: regular sized hot dogs made of pork & beef ( my favorite) and Big Dogs: very large ( almost twice the size & price of a Wiener) but all beef. They have signature dogs or create your own. I loved the chili ( and cheese) dogs. The chili tastes like Cincinnati style chili that I cook all the time. It has a special ingredient that just gives it a perfectly individual taste. AWESOME! (see if you can figure it out) I also like cole slaw ( which they offer) on a dog with a little hot sauce. Decided to do a late summer Jersey hot dog tour, this was our second stop. I was a little worried about parking but relieved to find a sizeable parking lot, only about six or seven cars parked when we arrived. Place reminded me of a Chinese restaurant on the outside, walked on to find only one person in line and plenty of seating. Staff was very kind, as they welcomed us to a second register. Place was clean, and food came out quickly. Prices were great, as was the dood. We ordered a couple of dogs and an order of fries, along with a fountain RC Cola-that brought back some good memories. Food was excellent-dogs were deep fried and fries were nice and crispy-they gave us two little ketchup dips for the fries. Couldn't finish the fries, and when I asked for a bag, the counter person offered to wrap them up for me if I brought them up to him-he used an old school wax type paper from a roll behind the counter, securing with a rubber band from a giant box of rubber bands-definitely old school. This place is an absolute classic, and it gets 5 stars for having excellent choices outside of its traditional hot dog offerings, including burgers, fresh filled cannoli, and refills for only a buck! Counter service is friendly, and they accept credit cards, which is a huge plus. Plenty of seating and parking, another huge plus. An absolute classic of a spot. J&H loads up their hot dogs with a wide variety of toppings and combinations. We got spicy relish, all the way, and kraut/mustard. All the food was pretty good and satisfying but I wasn't particularly thrilled by the kind of cheese that they used on the dishes (white American)? I made a deal with Wifey-I'd go shopping with her if we could stop for hot dogs in the way home. I decided on Johnny & Hanges since I'd been here before I'm and I knew a Wifey would like the dogs. The place was pretty busy when we got there, but we weren't in a hurry. I ordered a 1/4 pounder all the way w/chili, onions and mustard and a Regular dog w/chili and cheese. Wifey got a regular dog w/kraut and mustard and we shared an order of fries with gravy and cheese (Disco Fires if you're from Jersey). The dogs were fantastic. They use Thuman's I believe and they make for an outstanding, tasty dog. The chili they use/make here isn't my favorite, but it is quite tasty. I also prefer a cheese sauce over American cheese, but wherever they use here is pretty tasty. The Disco fries were some of the best we'd ever had...the gravy was really good. As I said, I'd been here before...and I'll be back here again. Delicious dogs, very friendly staff, eating area and bathrooms were very clean and the food was fairly priced. My family is from NJ and I have been coming back to visit since I was a child. With that said, I was a Libby's girl through and through. I didn't think anything could top it -- and then Libby's closed. I was in NJ in June and my mom and I needed our fix (she had been a loyal Johnny & Hanges girl since she was young) and this was a first for me! When I tell you I fell in love at first bite.... I usually don't leave negative reviews because i understand how that can affect a business however when you are disregarded after finding a roach in your food it leaves me no choice. I found a roach cooked in with the sauce and that was served over my fries with cheese and sauce. The roach was obvious against the cheese fry and when i grabbed it and placed it on a tissue it was clear the roach was soaked in sauce. I informed woman at the register and her excuse to me was by the window where you are sitting there's bugs. When i told her that this roach was in the sauce under cheese she said I'll tell the cook. There was no apology or offer to refund my money. The refund is not the issue because I didn't want my money back but to disregard the fact that a roach was found in food served by them is unacceptable. I've been here plenty of times and will not return thanks to the lack of accountability and now the creepy crawlers found in their sauce. read more

Took a Sunday ride to Johnny and Hanges last weekend. First time, but heard from old classmates about it. We are avid hot dog enthusiasts and travel far and wide on our quest Igor the best! A good "snappy" hot dog done Texas Weiner style is our favorite. I enjoyed their hot dog a lot. It wasn't my #10 as far as the chili. It was tasty, but I like a little more heat and cumin. Bought a car at the toyota dealership. Crossed the street and ate a chili dog. A very good day. Dog was crisp and delicious. They need to change their hours to close at 7:00 instead of 8:00. If you go in any time after 7:00 the old staff harasses you that they are getting ready to close. Why not change your hours if that is what the staff is doing. It would be better for everyone. Nobody likes to hear this senior citizen staff complain that you came to eat during their normal hours of operation. If it is to late for them to work, hire a younger staff. All I had was a chili cheese dog and a yahoo. Let me start off with the yahoo was amazing. As for the dog the chili they use must have cinnamon or something else sweet in it.
