My wife and I made our annual pilgrimage to Johnny Carino's in Joplin Mo. we love their Italian Nacho's. We got hooked on them when In Tulsa. However the Tulsa restaurant closed several years ago. Therefore we now make a road trip to Joplin. The Italian nachos was great as usual. My wife had a dinner salad and lasagna. I had Caesar salad and Timballo. Our salads were fresh and crisp. The food was descent. The service was great. However, the food was not worth the price we paid. A simple Fettuccine Alfredo is $16-17 and then to add chicken is another $5-6. The cost to make that isn't anywhere near a reasonable expectation for a markup. For that price I expect to take leftovers home. But we didn't. I can make better for cheaper at home....and have tons of leftovers for lunch the next day. Sorry Carino's, for my family to visit again, a drastic price reduction needs to happen. read more

We should have trusted previous reviews as it was not a good food experience. 'Tomato' based sauce was very off and tasted bad. Fettuccini noodles of the other dish was undercooked. Quality of food ranked among some of the poorest we have had. Italian nachos were the only good thing and they were very good. This is a new review because my old one has disappeared, which has happened to a number of my reviews on Yelp. It's better than Olive Garden, considerably so. But I prefer other Italian sit down chains like Buca di Beppo or Romano's Macaroni Grill that are not available in Joplin. Johnny's has some great specialties like Lemmon Chicken and others that are not typical of our other choices in town. Still in Joplin where there seems to be a Mexican restaurant about every twenty yards I'm surprised There are only two sit-down Italian chains here along with two mall style fast food Italian lie Fazoli's. Johnnys is always less busy than Olive Garden which is a plus to me since its away from the crowds near the freeway. Located in the Mall parking lot, its easy to find and easy to find parking too. It's rare that we have to wait more than a few minutes, most of our visits we are seated right away although we don't usually eat out at the peak times along 6-7 PM. Normally the menu is more complete as is true for most restaurants facing COVID cutbacks. The new, minimized menu is missing some of my favorites like Tri-Tip which they do very well. I hope it comes back in the future. But all the traditional dishes you would expect are there along with a full bar and wine list that I'm told is better than Olive Garden. I would say Johnny's is the adult version for people who expect more when going out for dinner or a date night. We also like to go in for lunch. Although families and kids are welcome its not kid focused like a Fizoli's. The bread is better than Olive Garden too, fresh warm and light. Service is okay, they allow the staff to have some personality and we like that, wait staff is often funny and more interesting than at the other option in town. Perhaps because they serve fewer people they have a little more time to engage with patrons. But occasionally we've had wait staff that was over attentive and kept interrupting us more than you'd expect. read more

Used to be my favorite Italian restaurant in Joplin. It's now my least favorite Applebees. When Burgers are on the menu ahead of the Italian choices that should have been an indicator. We ate there last night with some friends. Actually, the food was good the service was good. But! When I paid my bill the waitress kept my change. I'm not trying too be petty. I just hate it when waiting staff round up in there favor on the change because they don't want to keep coins. So when I asked about my change the waitress got an attitude and became the victim!. Then she returned my.40 with a $1. and walked away. She still expected a tip. She hovered for a while and then advised she was leaving for the evening. After all that she still only got the dollar. Like I said. The food was good the service was good. The bill was $59.60 and for .40 she beat herself out of a $12.+ tip! read more

I had not eaten at Johnny Carino's in a long time, and I always loved their calamari. SO I ordered a large order of calamari and was very shocked to see that it was HALF the size it used to be. Not only that, but now there were fried pepper slices mixed in to give the illusion there was more actual calamari than there actually was. First time at Johnny Carinos. We went for lunch. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced and a good selection. I had the lunch pasta of rigatoni, meat sauce and meatballs. Very tasty. My wife had the brisket dip and minestrone. The soup was delicious. While the brisket would have been perfect for me, she thought it was a little too fatty. But it was very flavorful as well. Our waitress was energetic, friendly and attentive. Her energy was evident in that one of the wait staff didn't show for work and she had the whole place to work on. And she did great and wasn't the least bit grumpy like I would have been. The bread is maybe the best I ever ate...and ate and ate. Good place. read more

Went to take the wife out to a nice dinner this evening the food was excellent no complaints on the food but the waitress was terrible from spilling my mixed drink on the table the dump in shrimp scampi sauce on the chair and on my wife and table it was just a bad experience from the server side. After spilling everything she came over to offer grated cheese I got some my wife only got a tiny bit because they ran out and she didn't go get more. Then I decided we have been full from that delicious meal to order two of their desserts to go I'm in it later she brought him one plates and then when I mentioned they were to go she's like oh yeah and took them back and put them in plastic containers. Food was pretty tasty but someone has to get this place cleaned up. I got vinegar and oil for my salad. The red wine vinegar was cloudy and had sheets of floating stuff in it. It was so nasty I asked for balsamic vinegar. The crucible was crazy sticky and must have been setting forever because you can see a line on the inside of who knows what at the fluid level. We've done Johnny's before and like most restaurants the food is average. Our waitress today was super friendly and made sure glasses were never empty and the bread basket was always full. The atmosphere is quiet and the place is clean. Getting our food took sometime (30-45 minutes) but it came out hot, so I can let the wait slide. I got the festive bowtie chicken. The pasta was cooked perfect, the chicken was a little dry and the cream sauce was tasty! My sons calzone was well done almost burnt. The youngest son got chicken alfredo and the alfredo sauce was pretty watery and heavy on the garlic. Prices range $12-$18 so not a place we do on a regular basis but seems to be average price for a sit down italian restaurant. read more

TL;DR: Great pick if you're looking for Italian. Especially great if you come on a Monday. Italian Soda is worth the cost. I generally enjoy Italian food, so I enjoy this place as well. I have been multiple times and would recommend anyone try it. There is only one concern that I would point out and it regards the service. At times, food comes out not the most warm. At times, the waiter or waitress may be a little slow. I point this out because it seems more common here than some other places around town. If you can get past the above, coming here on a Monday is the best option. If they are still doing half price family platters on Monday, this is the best time to get two meals for the price of one. I came here with my mother and a friend for lunch on the 4th of July. For a chain restaurant, it was pretty decent. The atmosphere is nice, but definitely not very formal. Don't be afraid to rock your denim. We sampled the stuffed baked mushrooms, which were well crafted. I opted for the endless soup and salad. I was a little disappointed in the selection of today's soup, and disliked my garlic potato choice. The caesar salad left me with no complaints - but the bread was truly the star tonight. Both of my accompanies liked their meals. Our waiter was fantastic. Quick, charismatic, and offered several times for a different soup option for me. He is probably the best waiter I've met yet in the Joplin area. I would come again with some friends to try their pasta - but unfortunately I think I'd pass on an intimate date night with my husband.
