    Biscuits and gravy

We stopped in for breakfast on our way back home and I got over easy eggs, bacon and decided to try the loaded hashbrown casserole. I'd recommend sticking with the regular hashbrown casserole, as the loaded version had a slice of cheese on top instead of shredded, which didn't quite work for me. The biscuits and gravy were decent! That said, the service was excellent--everyone was incredibly friendly, and our food came out quickly. The interior has a charming, nostalgic vibe, with lots of pictures on the walls and little games on the tables. Be sure to check out the gift shop on your way in or out. Overall, if you're in the mood for something simple and unpretentious, this place fits the bill!

    Cracker Barrel, Joplin, MO

The date was April 8, a Monday, and we had left Austin in a hurry the day before because it was claimed that a million people would be there the next day to have a better view of the eclipse. So we headed north and had lunch at the Cracker Barrel in Joplin, Mo. While having lunch by a window, we saw two people in the parking lot looking up-- and we realized IT WAS ECLIPSE TIME. Our waitress said the chef ran outside to get a picture, and she shared it with us. Nice. Here it is.

Don't let bitter people make you miss out on this place. The food was absolutely off the chain. Wife got the hamburger steak , daughter got kids pancakes and I got the country fried steak. I haven't had a restaurant make a meal this good in a long time. Wish I lived local but glad I stopped by. The place is clean and well staffed. We ordered our food and within 10 minutes we had plates.

Dinner: Joplin MO I finally tried Cracker Barrel's Southern Fried Chicken. It came with 4 pieces of hand breaded bone-in chicken and two sides. It was good, seasoned with their special recipe and fried 'til golden and crispy. I chose sweet corn and mashed potatoes/gravy for my sides. I was done with 2 pieces of chicken, meaning I got full! I liked the crispy skin but it was too much food. Hubby ordered the Maple Bacon Fried Chicken Tenders. He enjoyed that maple bacon glaze taste. It included house buttermilk ranch for dipping. Our meals came with complimentary biscuits and cornbread which we didn't even touch... it was just so much food. We were able to dine in. We had a little wait before we got seated. The tables were spread out enough with some tables blocked. Our server was friendly but not too attentive with our table. Took a long time to get the to go boxes we requested. 3.5 Stars for our entire dining experience. Review #1951

I had hair in my food and the service was awful. The server didn't remember half the things that we had asked for.

Terrible service. It was my grandson's birthday and they didn't even bring him free dessert. And, yes, we did mention it to the waitress.

There's a billiard parlor upstairs and a large-ish bar in the back (I didn't go into either but could see them when we came in). The main dining area ran through the middle of the building. Very casual but menu all over the place ($110 tomahawk steak or a $12 Reuben sandwich). Good service, very laid-back, not at all pretentious. I think it would make a good candidate for diners, drive-ins, and dives, but I'm not sure they have a signature dish? Clear all the food was fresh, not frozen. I got the catfish with fried okra and french fries. Best catfish I've had in years. And the okra and twice fried French fries were outstanding. Would definitely go back!

First I'll say that I had studied the menu posted on here and when we got there it has changed so I will post the updated menu. We started with the calamari. On the old menu it came with marinara, spinach and peppadew peppers. Sounded fantastic! New menu came with marinara and cherry peppers. Eh, not as exciting but we went ahead with it. What came out was so disappointing! There is a photo here on yelp of a ribeye steak with a basket of calamari in the background that looks really good. What we got was completely different. Pre-breaded frozen rings in a heavy, flavorless batter. They were greasy and there were no cherry peppers or garnish of any kind. The marinara was bleh and sweet. No amount of salt helped either the marinara or the calamari. The dish was in serious need of some acid to cut through all the grease, batter and sweet marinara so I asked for some lemon wedges. They were out of lemons. Next should have been the salad but it came out with the meal instead. That always irks me. Anyway I had gone with the wedge because photos of the house and caesar salads looked pretty boring. The wedge was delicious. A little bit more dressing would have been great but the blue cheese crumbles, jam and tomatoes were on point and the lettuce was crisp and refreshing. Then the entree. Old menu had a 16 oz ribeye for $40, now they offer a 14 oz for $50. Again, I went ahead with it. The farm-to-table beef was what brought us in. I ordered medium rare and felt like it was just barely there, maybe that was just tonight or maybe that's how they always do it, IDK. It was tender, juicy and had great beef flavor, the rancher that raised it did a great job. The cook? Not so much. It needed salt, in fact I don't think there was any seasoning on it at all from the kitchen. I'm a steak purist but a little salt and pepper go a long way and a pat of butter on top really sets it off. Some of the photos here on yelp show beautiful steaks with butter and chives on top. This was just steak. Excellent quality, poor execution. Now let's talk about the side dish. The menu said "roasted corn with bacon, onions, cream and parmesan". Sounds fantastic, right? I can see an image of it in my head and almost taste it! What I got though was absolutely gross and they should have been embarrassed to serve. I guess it was canned corn because frozen should have tasted fresher. It was NOT roasted. The kernels were tough and starchy like field corn, not sweet corn. There were no onions and no parmesan but it was floating in some milk or half and half, I couldn't tell which. Not cream. And it had some bacon in there which was what I picked out and ate because it was the only edible part of the dish. Last was dessert. I was dying to try the ooey gooey butter cake but alas, that was on the old menu, not this one. So we settled for carrot cake. It was a big serving and it tasted fine but it was just a standard bakery cake. It was garnished with whipped cream and caramel which I felt was out of place but hubby liked. The cream cheese frosting was good and there was lots of carrot and raisins in it. Overall the entire meal was just a big "miss" for both of us. Our server was nice and the rest of the staff as well. The place was nicely decorated and had a great deck out back. But when we heard farm-to-table beef I guess we envisioned more than grocery store frozen calamari, nasty corn and basic bakery cake. Even the steak although of excellent quality was lacking, due to under seasoning and under cooking it. The entire experience was just a big disappointment unfortunately. I hope it was an off night for them but we won't be back to find out.

I had the ono Hawaiian burger that had two good size juicy delish hamburger patties, a pineapple ring and secret kahuna sauce that tasted sort of like a sweet bbq to me. Very good and very filling! Choices for sides we all chose the onion rings. Thin cut light tempura type breading, VERY GOOD! also very filling as you get a pile of them! I want to try other things so will definitely be back! They have Coke products which is a big plus for me and our family! My wife wasn't as hungry so she got three sliders HOWEVER, the sliders had double patties too so each slider was big! And also very tasty! I haven't tried the chicken sandwiches or the wings so I don't know how they are and I may not get to them either because the burger was SO good! I may keep trying the burgers when I return.

First of all, the bar height only tables are not conducive to bringing small kids to a restaurant. The adults were nervous trying to make sure they didn't fall off the bar height chairs. I had the burger with the egg on it. Loved everything about this burger. Both burger and egg cooked perfectly. Wife had the Hawaiian burger, which she thought was delicious. Brother-in-law had the burger with the mac and cheese with the mac and cheese on the side; he absolutely raved about the mac and cheese. For appetizers, we bought the pepperjack bites and the spicy green beans. The green beans were fabulous, although I would have enjoyed dipping them in a spicier ranch than regular ranch, although it was very good ranch. We all ordered the french fries and onion rings with our dishes. All of us agreed both the rings and the fries were on the greasy side. I think the greasiness of the fries is what gave my stomach some issues later. The bartender who took care of me paying the bill was very nice. Big, welcoming, friendly smile; pleasant attitude and communication. The service industry needs more people like this guy. Would definitely try this place again to try something else on their vast menu. Might have to not eat for about two days so I can try the double patty hamburger with the fried chicken in the middle of the sandwich. Or their fried peanut butter and jelly. Or wings with their multitude of flavors of sauces and spices.

If you've ever been to classic diners like the ones featured on Guy Fieri's such as Sam's #3 in Aurora Colorado (miss those days living out in the Rockies), then you know that special something when you sit down and all the locals come out and congregate for brunch...well didn't get that feel here. However, 5/5 stars to the chef. Let me explain. And don't get me wrong, the server was fantastic. The setting was in the retail section of the Joplin Petro Truck Stop, being a fairly dim but rather quiet corner. In all my years of trucking, on the road, whether it be at a Denny's in a truck stop, or a Black Bear diner, Waffle House, another Iron Skillet, or i-Hop, whenever I order medium rare on a steak, it would always end up on opposite ends of the spectrum-- either very well done OR bloodshot rare. So when my server brought me a true medium rare steak, there was this aura of sacredness to it. I simply didn't expect the chef was going to make it to that likeness...and he proved me wrong. It just shows, that there are still individuals on planet Earth that know how to grill up an everyday New York steak and not destroy it. , Thank you Jesus this art form is still alive and well. But of course going back to the quality and satisfaction levels of eating the food, I still want to stick to a 3. It's a truck stop, it's a chain, it tastes very manufactured production line quality. Like if you walked into any Flying J or Pilot, whatever they have in the hot food trays, it's on par with that. Basically the Caesars Salad, the Mashed Potatoes, but the steak was how a New York strip would taste but on the saltier side. Until next time, maybe I'll check out that other diner in Barstow CA on route 66
