We arrived at Johnny's a few minutes before they opened at 11am today, went to the door to wait and found the door ajar because it wasn't locked. My watch read 10:56am. (Some eateries, from my experience, will welcome you in a few minutes early and invite you to sit down). Immediately this young server/hostess/whatever, unwelcomingly approached saying they were closed until 11am, and when I mentioned it was getting hot outside asking if we could please just sit in the air conditioning until then, she insisted we go back outside to wait. For four minutes! For a business that has right on their door they close Sundays to go to church, I find this behavior to be very petty, unchristian and not an example of southern hospitality. Simply the best bbq in the world!!! Johnny's BBQ is my measuring stick when it comes to barbeque and few are able to measure up. Their red sauce is sweet and tangy with just a little bite to it which is delicious over their bbq pork stuffed potato. If you get the smoked chicken, be sure to try the white sauce (a mayo/vinegar/pepper combo) that was simply made to go on good chicken. For those traveling through Cullman on I-65, Johnny's is a short jaunt off the freeway for some amazing food. If you can't decide what to order, simply get the combination: smoked chicken, pork bbq cooked in sauce, beans, and fries. Once you try it, you'll definitely be back! read more

The BBQ here was okay and I live near Chicago, we have better Q joints near us. I took my brother here for a nice meal after 10 hours of driving, to just enjoy some good hometown food. The meal was just okay and the pulled pork was very dry and when questioned I was told that is Southern BBQ. I had gone to a different southern BBQ joint in April 2012, Gibson's, near Decatur, AL, a better place by all standards. I think upon next time we visit area we will stop back in Decatur to get great BBQ and service too. read more

Stopped here after it was recommended from an employee at the rest area down the road. Food was delicious! We couldn't even finish all of the food on our plates. Our family all enjoyed our food and cleaned our plates. The BBQ plate is a good value with choice of pulled pork or ribs and baked beans, fries, and cole slaw. The meat is prepared in a smoker outside. The waitresses were diligent about bringing soda refills. At the front counter, the lady was really nice and told some of the history of the 59-year-old restaurant. I got the impression this place is popular among locals. Do NOT believe the 5-star reviews. They are either written by liars or people who have NEVER eaten good BBQ. Johnny's is quite possibly the worst BBQ in Alabama. The slaw had no flavor. The fries had no salt and to say they were lukewarm is generous. The beans were cold and tasted straight out of the can. Now to the barbecue pork. It was awful. It had no smoked flavor and seemed to have been taken from a water bath. Everything about it was just no good. read more

The BBQ potato is enormous with delicious BBQ pork piled high! The onion rings were some of the best I've had and can't say enough about the BBQ plate which comes with three sides. We used to eat here multiple times during the week and sometimes on the weekend. They knew us by name in the drive thru we came through so much. We were regulars for many years. I loved the stuffed BBQ potatoes. Both the Pork and Chicken were delicious. At one time I would have argued they were the best in the US. If you had them in the 90's through around 2014 you were in for a treat. The potatoes just get worse and worse. I'm tired of begging for a fresh potato, butter, cheese and bacon bits. Something happened within the last 5 years and they just haven't been able to get it back. We do a lot of take out and I have to doctor my potato once I get it home. You can ask to pay for extra toppings and it makes zero difference. They must have everything on lock down in their kitchen. Sometimes the potato has been sitting too long and isn't very palatable. I can remember back in the day they added so much butter the potato would be floating in a bath of melted butter. Now you're lucky to get half a teaspoon of it. We're moving on. They are more on their game on the weekend, so go then for better odds. Hubby still likes the BBQ plates but he's just as happy with the competition. The final straw happened just recently. They charge you a fee now to pay them with a debit or credit card. So to encourage cash payments to them, they hit you with a fee if you pay using the most popular payment option in all of the United States. They call it a convenience fee, but truly, it is an inconvenience fee, and a fee that made us try out the competition for a new place to buy BBQ every week. This is my favourite place to eat in Cullman. We eat here almost every week. All the staff are super friendly and personable. Your glass is always refilled. Everything runs efficiently. Not to mention the food is great. Incredibly DISAPPOINTED that you are now charging a "convenience fee" to pay with a card. Me and my girlfriend stopped in here since I had been bragging on the barbecue at this establishment. I haven't been here in probably 3 or 4 years because of working out of town and was excited to have the experience again. It appeared medium service but not even close to in the weeds but no waitress or hostess was at the front to greet us but we seated ourselves and eventually were greeted We both had the large BBQ pork sandwich with fries and a drink. Keeping it simple and what they are good at right? No. Everything was cold. You could tell my date was not impressed at all and made me feel bad because I pride myself for knowing the best places to eat in the areas I frequent the most. The restaurant supposedly closes at 9 pm, so we went through the drive-thru at 8:45 to pick up a pound of meat. The woman opened the window and when my husband started to order, she said, "We done closed." and shut the window in his face. My husband said, "The sign says 9." She opened the window to ask him what he said and he repeated himself. She said, "Ok then. Whatcha want?" He told her never mind. In a town with multiple BBQ places, there was zero reason to be rude to a customer. My husband has always loved Johnny's, but I'd imagine we won't be back. Less than 5 minutes later? We are at the Jim n Nick's drive thru, getting good BBQ and great customer service. A couple of seconds of kindness goes a long way. read more

The food was good with generous portions. It was crowded when we got there but we were seated right away. My husband and I both got the pork plate which you can order in varying sizes. He got the largest size and I can't believe it all fit on his plate. You get fries, baked beans, and cole slaw with the plate. They also bring out a stack of plain white sliced bread to eat with your meal, kind of boring but I know some people love this. I also got some hush puppies because I had been craving them. They were large and in charge, good but not the best I've ever had. Unfortunately for them if I drive out that way I'll probably choose Al's Dog House across the street and if I want BBQ then I'll stay close to home and eat at Big Daddy's in Warrior and that's the reason for only 3 stars. But if you're in the area and craving BBQ its a good place to stop. This would be a 2 star because, yes, I have had better. Johnny's BBQ 4th st sw Cullman al I had fond memories of the BBQ at this place from my childhood. However, a recent visit turned negative. The pork sandwiches we had were cold and the meat didn't really have that good bbq flavor that I had remembered from my childhood. The beans tasted like they opened up a can and warmed them and the slaw tasted old. The waitress acted offended when we spoke up and the cashier didn't offer a refund either. The best ribs I've had...hands down, ever!!! These are the ribs all other ribs should be measured by, period! I was not a total fan of the pulled pork...I should have asked for it dry with sauce on the side, it was tender as anything..dont get me wrong...just did not get the full impact...but did I mention the ribs?!! I had the homemade peanut butter cheesecake for desert...WOW!!! Perfect comes to mind when I think of this cheesecake.... After some serious thought, probably more than I should have, I decided that the good reviews for this restaurant were from people who have been eating the food all their lives and are really dedicated to the restaurant. It's in a small town and maybe you just can't get any better food there. The meat had a good smoke flavor, but that was the only good thing about the food. The sauce tasted like puréed tomatoes with no salt, or any other spice. The coleslaw was cabbage mayo, water and sugar, no salt, no pepper, no vinegar. Tasteless. The beans were cheap canned with maybe some chopped onions thrown in for good measure. No spices whatsoever. Even Bush's from the store are better than these. My husband got a burger and it was a frozen thin patty with no seasoning. We were really bummed and thought for sure a small town barbecue joint would rock. read more

A quick lunch stop on a work road trip. I knew it was a good choice even before I read over reviews as the parking lot was packed at 1240ish. I have never had a better bbq chicken sandwich. I got the sand which platter and while the fires were nothing to write home about the potato salad and coleslaw were full of flavor and different then your run of the mill cold salads. I also added on three hush puppies because who can pass up hijab puppies. Also I used the white sauce on the chicken sandwich and it was amazing!!!! read more

This was a great stop on our way to Nashville, I highly recommend it, especially for the pork sandwich. - Super friendly service (family owned & run since the 60s which is a plus) - ribs were awesome.meat fell right off the bones and just a touch of sweet and slightly hot BBQ sauce. I was visiting the Sportsman Lake county park and while talking with the hostess, I asked if she could recommend a barbeque place not too far away. She didn't hesitate to suggest Johnny's. Gave me more than adequate directions - thank goodness! What a delightful place! Sweet staff, super barbeque (the way I think it should be served: with sauce already on it!), delicious potato salad, yummy bbq beans. The cole slaw isn't as good as KFC. When I walked in, I saw a sign for homemade Rocky Road cheesecake - just HAD to order a slice. Yummy! I'll be back whenever I'm in the area!
