    BBQ Pork Plate
    Steve C.

First visit to this small town BBQ joint. They opened their doors in 1949! Had the pork plate with sides of baked beans, coleslaw, fries, and hush puppies! All items were excellent, their bbq sauce is also very good. Service was quick and efficient and prices were fair.

We wanted to eat at a local, family-owned bbq joint & we struck gold at Johnny's! Packed with local folks, so we knew it was gonna be good. The food was EXCELLENT; perfect (large) portions, great presentation, toothsome flavor, & great-value-for-the-price. Morgan, our server, was a real sweetheart; pleasant, professional, & very attentive. She checked on us often & kept our glasses topped off. Thanks, Johnny! We'll be back! #SlapTheBulldog!

Johnny's Bar-B-Q was listed as obe of the restaurants in Alabama you have to try before you die. This Cullman, Alabama institution has been feeding the people of this area and road weary travelers for decade after decade. This restaurant has been in business since l at least 1950's. I pulled in well before noon find me parking lot full already. However, I was seated within five minutes of being there. I ordered the small combination barbecue plate, which was three ounces of pork, a quarter chicken, coleslaw, potato salad and a roll. My food was brought out rather fast and I wasted no time staring into my lunch. I had then bring me both the red and the white barbecue sauce, which I used liberally on both the pork and chicken. The pork was tender and you had a great bark on the outside, making the skin almost crunchy. The potato salad was finely minced and had a great vinegar base. The coleslaw was a bit strong with the onion, but otherwise all was great. Service is very friendly, almost to the point that you would see an old movie about small town country folk. I would recommend if you are in the area to seek this place out.

Ribs with fries, baked beans and bread. Was really good

Looking for some new BBQ to try and my wife and I settled on this place. I will say, everything up until paying my check was spot on. Server was sweet, attentive and answered all our questions. The food was good, like really good. But then.... we got up to pay the check. The person working the register was very rude to me. I was joking with her, and she said "can I just have your check please" really snotty. Not sure what her problem was. I handed her the check, paid and we walked out. My wife said I showed great restraint not getting a manager or telling her off but I was in a good mood and wasn't going to let this person ruin it. Didn't catch her name because I was floored at her attitude. I do know she was kind of short, blond hair and wore glasses. We shall not be returning here. Pucket's just opened and their BBQ is AMAZING and everyone there is friendly. Maybe Johnnys should take some notes???

Amazing food. The server was so nice and on top of everything. Will be back. Nice atmosphere.

I was visiting my sister andwe went to Cullman, Al and we were looking for a place to grab some food and decided on Johnny's BBQ. Our server was Morgan and she was GREAT !!! I ordered the hamburger steak with onions and gravy for the sides we had fries and the bake beans and my sister ordered the ribs. Ohhh man the ribs were tender (fall off bone) seasoned well, the hamburger steak was juicy and tender and the gravy was thick and rich. Baked beans had a sweet smoky flavor and the crinkle fries were cooked to perfection. We ordered wings and ribs to go for the Bama game on Saturday. I'll post about the wings later. We had lemon pie for dessert sweet and lightly tangy(so good) the lemonade was excellent. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in Alabama.

She appeared to be handling the whole front by herself, but made us feel like we were the only ones there. Decor is like that of a "RoadHouse" feel. Apparently they have live music on a posted schedule. Looked like that would be a fun time to visit. Options were standard southern style meat and three options or menu choices. Wife had vegetable plate, I had the pulled pork plate. Bar-B-Que was tender and flavorful. Not bad for a non specialist Bar-B-Que restaurant. 2 flavors of sauce on the table, a sweet and spicy sauce, either would be an excellent choice. There were only 2 meat options offered, don't know if that's the norm, or we were there so late after lunch they had sold out of other options. Will definitely be back there again. I would like to try and catch one evening with the live music is scheduled.

Greasy with an odd sweet seasoning? Like paprika blended with sugar. Kiddo had the chicken club. He really liked it. The addition of pimento cheese was interesting in a good way. He did not eat his fries, this kid always eats his fries. I liked the vibe of the place, they do live music and that's cool. The service (or lack thereof) is the reason for the 3-star rating. Our server vanished. Never once checked on us, we had to wait 15 minutes after eating for our check. It was so bad that we had to wave down another server to finally get the check.

Oh my God. Some of…read moreyou may know that I am a phenom in the smoke pit, and also if you go through my reviews you see that I frequent barbecue places all over the country. Probably one out of every four or five actually make the cut. This is one of them. Place was packed, and they close at 3:00 so you need to get your butt in there or you'll miss out. They had a separate dining room that had a private event, and then the main dining room for all of us hungry little festerlings. They've won top barbecue awards 4 years in a row, the decorations are nice, everything about the inside is nice and warm. I walked in, and was immediately greeted and told us just sit wherever I'd like to so I grabbed the first table I was next to. They say everything's bigger in texas, and I've been to plenty Texas barbecue joints, but they ain't bigger than THIS 'Bama spot. Ho-ly cow. The waitress got my drink and took my order. I ordered fried pickles as an appetizer, which I absolutely did not need. I also ordered the five meat plate with three sides. I walked in there, not have eaten all day, so I was pretty damn hungry. I got so full, I was considering calling a cab to drive me back across the street where I'm staying. I digress.... Shortly after ordering she came to my table with homemade chips. Literally some of the best I've ever had anywhere. Then my sides came, then my plate came. My GAWD what did I just order!? The amount of food that you get for the price is just amazing. My fried pickles were eight bucks, and my platter was only 26 bucks but seriously, it can feed two people and still have leftovers to take home. I left with two boxes of leftovers that I'll be able to eat on for the next 2 days easy. I ordered smoked ham, smoked turkey, pulled pork, SLICED brisket (the way it is SUPPOSED TO BE made, none of that chopped crap) and REAL pork ribs. None of that "fall off the bone" nonsense that these low budget wannabe BBQ places advertise, that always end up just being steamed and then tossed in an oven or electric smoker. All my meats were outstanding. The brisket was tender, the ribs were on point, the turkey was outstanding. Okra was normal, I wasn't too big of a fan of the turnip greens, but my sweet baked potato was ridiculous! In a good way! My server was super nice, they were super slammed and she still managed to chit chat a bit with me. All in all, my meal came to 40 bucks. And like I said, I have two PACKED styrofoam to go containers. I'm really glad I walked over here. And I'm really glad that this place knows what barbecue SHOULD be. There's a lot of restaurants I've been to, that could take notes from this place. This is only my second time in Dodge City, but when I come back here, I'll definitely be coming back for more Chow! SO worth the money! ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149. Not wanting to wait until we got back to Birmingham to get some grub, we pulled off in Dodge City looking for a spot that had a few solid reviews. Alas, the place we sought was no longer around, and Jim B's BBQ was the only thing around that looked acceptable. We decided to take a chance on the place (even though the sign reads Jim B's BBQ, Steak and Seafood, and I typically steer clear of anyplace that claims multiple specialties that includes seafood). We might have skipped the place over, but I was hungry and as we pulled up, you could smell the BBQ in the parking lot. Being first-timers, the friendly waitress steered us to the Loaded Mushrooms (think loaded baked potato, but instead of a potato under all of that cheese and ranch and bacon, its fried mushrooms). They were as good as they sound. The prices were so cheap and the BBQ smelled so good, I decided to go all-in and got the BBQ sampler platter. My wife picked the pulled pork sandwich. Everything was great. The baked beans were even awesome (sweet and bacony), and I'm really not a huge bean fan. The BBQ pork had a good smoke flavor. The chicken was juicy. The smoked sausage was good and seemed to be very fresh. The ribs were a little dry, but they were very tender. To top it all off, with as much food as we ordered, our bill was just over $30 including tip. The dry ribs are the only thing keeping them from five stars on this visit. I'm probably spoiled by all of the good BBQ in the South, but I just can't give five stars to a BBQ joint unless all of the que is top notch.
