I will be the first to admit that I am not the biggest fan of these long standing fish fry establishments located on city island. They more so serve the purpose of nostalgia rather than amazing food. This visit I was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed the shrimp and lobster platters. The fries were crispy( which is a pet peeve of mine) and the shrimp & lobster tails were freshly fried to order, juicy, tender, and lightly battered. They could have better tartar sauce but I wont be so picky These go excellent with a frozen drink, we indulged in a nicely spiced pina colada! Bro a time was had. I absolutely loved the outdoor, waterside environment. Being from a coastal city it was nostalgic. Also a nice touch was the added ropes or lines overhead to keep the seagulls at bay. Very smart. The staff was nice, not southern charm but could tell we were visitors and helped us make quick selections as they truly believe in moving the people through. We ordered a fish basket with flounder, 2 shrimp baskets, and crab legs. Somebody in the group ordered a round of margarita style somethings that were lovely too. The shrimp and fish fry batter was pretty good. It wasn't salty but wasn't bland either. The French fries were hot and crispy too and that's a big deal because no one likes soggy fries or potatoes. Also to note the fried fish was really crispy too and not a soggy mess as I experienced somewhere else. Now, I'm not sure what combo of garlic and Parmesan or what have you seasoning they shook on these crab legs but surely they did a number on my taste buds. The quantity and price match was a perfect ratio. I think they could give lessons to some other places on how to portion and season their food. Provided there's close beach access and a host of alcohol and food this is a GREAT spot to hang out when it's warm outside. It just screams I want another weekend this summer, and every year I go because it's the vibe to really enjoy a view of Manhattan with some deep fried seafood. The prices are out of control - they are sooooo inexpensive, it's truly crazy. Give me a bunch of yummy scallops and shrimp for $20-25 a paper continaer's worth. I mean in Manhattan that many fries might cost you $10+. And the $5 Pina Coladas, wow, what a deal. The sauce station alone feels like an instagram post, and the overall experience could be a chapter in a book. Is this a gourmet experience, not really. But is it fun? Yeah. The service is gruff yet friendly. How is that possible? You'll have to go to find out, but stand in one of the lines (choose the right one they're all for different things) and then order some food and pay in cash. It'll come out in however much time they decide is appropriate. Could be less than a minute, but it might be five. You'll never really wonder where your food is because the turnover is fast and the place wants to keep the lines moving. My boyfriend brought me here on a food adventure on City Island. The place has been open for many decades. They have a huge variety of fried seafood. They also have raw clams and raw oysters. We got the soft shell crabs and the raw clams. We loved the food as it was hot and scrumptious. We also got the white clam chowder which was a potato base rather than the red clam chowder which is a tomato base. It was a pretty good portion for $6. You have to try the house made tartar sauce. Came here with my mom and daughter to take them both on a lunch date. This is my moms favorite spot. When I was young she use to bring me here all the time. It seems they changed up items. They are technically the same items, like chicken, fries etc. But the taste is dragastically different. I didn't like it. I had chicken wings and fries which is what I normally get besides cheeseburgers since I'm allergic to shellfish. The breading on the chicken was horrible way too thick and taste less. They didn't use to be breaded. The fries and my Pina colada were good though. They do also give big portions. My mom also said the other items changed too, didn't like the taste. "Yeah, don't go there, this is where pimps used to take their tricks out for their dine-out night. It's cheap fast and cash only"... Alex (real name changed to protect his identity) is the snarky, sarcastic but yet mostly polite plumber who looks after the plumbing system of the pre-war apartment complex that I happen to reside in. Like many of the finest tradesmen of the big Apple, he is strategically located at the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx and crosses over to 4 of the 5 boroughs to serve a myriad of customers. He is an avid cat lover, a bit of a gourmand and just like me, does not hold back on the punches, and doesn't suffer fools gladly. Oddly enough, he can explain plumbing issues to me the same way I explain computer issues to him - that is, simplified but pin-point accurate with some nuanced metaphors. Yeah, considering that he's not far from Orchard Beach and has been to every seafood joint on City Island, his assessment for its comparative qualities during passing conversation has been laser accurate. So, what's with Johnny's Reef? Well, it's one of the 2 restaurants all the way at the tip of City Island, pointing like a middle finger straight at Little Neck Bay (you know, the bay that Bayside is named after in Queens), it's the one with plenty of outdoor seating, a private observation area, and relatively ample parking. It operates like an ala carte seafood cafeteria with booze, and it's strictly cash only, so put away that Apple pay, hipsters. Cash rules everything around here, so get money from Chase, it's dollar dollar bills, y'all. So how was the service? What service...? It's basically like Nathan's hot dogs on Coney Island, except worse. Certain lines only sell certain things. Line 1 is for the Cervezas and the slushy booze, 2 is a self-service pumping station for sauces, 3 is steamed and fried, 4 is fried only, 5 is the raw clams, 6 is for corn, salad, chowder, burgers, soft drinks and dessert. So before you walk up you have to pre-game - maybe delegate someone to handle the steam and fried while someone else handles the drinks and the sauces. Everything is strictly DIY. The lines are thankfully fast and they have a decently clean industrial setup with pre-battered seafood ready to go into the fryers, and the steamed stuff standing to go at a moment's notice. After paying (eeeh, keep the change) and getting your food, grab a table and eat. The outdoor eating area is mostly covered and the scenery is excellent - you can see the Throggs Neck bridge and the beauty of Long Island sound. Dig in, feel free to mumble something suitable. So how's the food? Strictly speaking it's not expensive for what you get in Summer 2023 - fried whiting with fries at 17 is decent, steamed scallops at 23 with garlic and bread is okay, as is clam strips at 18, and the portion sizes are good for the money. The problem is that they applied the bare minimum legal definition of what they need to serve up while cost cutting - as in, dried garlic with the steamed scallops, flavorless vegetation pretending to be herbs, and margarine masquerading as butter. The whiting wasn't marinated or seasoned before the batter, and the batter itself has no flavor. The clam strips were meaty but tastes like the result of deep frying an Ikea cushion, a bunch of greasy mush. Somehow even their fries were flavorless - what did they do? No salt in them whatsoever? You'll probably need to aggressively salt everything to make it agreeable, or smother ketchup tartar or cocktail sauce on everything. That would explain why they gave us a crapload of salt packets with the food and the constant attention at line 2. Somehow the memory me taking my first girlfriend at age 15 to the Bodega for fifty cent franks and quarter-waters many moons ago came rushing back to my head, except this is not the mid-90s, it's 2023, and I am not a high school sophomore taking my crush out with my allowance money trying to get to second base with her. Instead I have an irate wife with a snarky attitude expecting a decent seafood outing after an afternoon at Rye beach - maybe I should've suggested Bigelow's clam shack at Rockville Centre instead of testing Alex's wisdom. "Huggy bear, what the hell is this...?" Oh no. Did she overheard what Alex said about Johnny's Reef? So yeah, next time you take the missus out, either dial the expectations back, bring a large canister of MSG, or maybe just have a Pina colada and watch the sunset, then drive somewhere else good for seafood, because yeesh, the scenery is good, the parking is ample, the food is public school cafeteria quality. They have alot of tables and also free parking $33 for 4 clusters of snow crabs is really cheap IMO. They were flavorful and the clam with garlic butter that they give tastes really good. The soft shell crabs were a bit on the expensive side and small. The clam chowders were just ok. Probably wouldn't order them again so I can save stomach space to try something else. A dozen raw clams (choice of cherrystone or little necks) for $13 is a pretty good deal too. They were fresh and good. Corns were gigantic and I also had a Virgin pina colada and strawberry daiquiri and they were good as well. I would come back again for the snow crabs. read more

The food was cooked quickly to order so that was a plus but it was tasteless I starting think maybe something was wrong with me because it had NO FLAVOR at all . Fries were soggy . Not even the drink had flavor just ice with a splash of henny only thing that was good was that little cherry . The meal was 120 all together with the food shown and 2 drinks which in my opinion is pricey for what is offered . The view is beautiful because it sits at the end of the island . This fish joint brought back so manny memories of our Brooklyn go to spot back in the day in Sheepshead Bay.... Randazzo's !!! We arrived on a Tuesday around 3ish and this joint was a buzzing; hood style dats how we would describe it; as soon as we pulled into their huge parking lot we witnessed a brawl slap fight between a husband & wifey with their grown ass kids watching ... No worries they all made up and feasted on like over a $300 Lunch !! Honestly felt real good hanging with everyone over here, they all wacked a lot of drinking with good people and some dam good seafood !!! Mostly beach goers were hanging over here & huge family & friends hanging and getting their seafood fix on !! The seafood was super fresh & fried to perfection!! I have been eating here over 50 years. Truly never disappoints. My last visit I had my usual calamari, seems like something was different, still good, but different. Friends had the fried filet. I believe they used Swai, it's a light fish, good for frying. But it is not a cod or flounder, and for the price, they can use flounder, or cod, or haddock, even turbot, Swai is not necessary. Order and pay at the counter and wait there as your food is prepared. There are different stations that just sell soups and beverages. The sauce station is self serve and you can get as much sauce as you want, Woo-hoo! We had the fried fillet, whiting, calamari, New England clam chowder and steamed fillet. The fried fish is served with fries, lemon wedges and cole slaw. The seafood was delicious. If you don't like little pin bones do not get the whiting since they have little pin bones in the fish. The Clam chowder was good, but there wasn't much clam meat inside, but they do give you a nice size bowl of it for the price. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. There is a tent set up outside with tables and heat lamps installed to keep you warm and toasty on those cold days. They are efficient in getting your order prepared quickly and the staff here is super friendly. Plenty of parking but beware, the seagulls will dive bomb and crap on your car. Look for clean parking spots on the ground free of bird do do before parking to better your odds of a "bird free detailing your car experience" Be smart and don't feed the birds. You go to a different line depending on what you want: fried food, steamed items, drinks, soups and so forth. Your food is delivered to you on the spot at the counter, you pay for it (separately at each window) and find a table. There's a self service counter for napkins, ketchup and tartar sauce. The portions are huge and, while everything's good, the fried seafood items are the definite thing to get. We had the clams and they were fantastic. Fries seem like they're cut freshly here and they're good too. Everybody in town is here enjoying themselves. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars because this place really is great for what it is, but there were a few things that kept it from being better than just an A-OK experience. First off, the location is great - they're right on the edge of the water so you get really great views. There is also plentiful seating, although the benches are pretty uncomfortable. It was packed when we went but it didn't really seem to be a place where people spend a ton of time hanging out after eating so even if there isn't a table when you arrive, the turnover is pretty quick. The food was also solid, especially for the price! We tried the shrimp cocktail, which was tasty although the shrimp were pretty small. You did get a TON of them for $14 so a really great value. I also really enjoyed their cocktail sauce, which I'd guess was homemade. Fish and chips were good, but not great (and the fries were better than the filet, which while well seasoned, was kind of soggy.) A+ for a good piña colada too. Now, the not so great parts. First, it's cash only, which is pretty annoying, especially if you're ordering for a family or a group - the prices here are great for the value, but it can add up quickly. Secondly, the ordering process is absurd. There are individual lines for pretty much everything - fried seafood baskets, raw bar, cooked dishes (stuffed clams/pasta etc.) you get the drift. My friend and I originally wanted clams, a fried basket, and shrimp cocktail but it was so convoluted that I decided to screw the clams rather than figure out which line I has to wait on for them (plus I was running out of cash.) I understand having a separate drink station - that actually makes sense. But I couldn't get a soda at the bar where I ordered a drink. Mind you, they definitely HAD soda, because I could have ordered a *rum* and Diet Coke, but to get just a plain Diet Coke I had to walk back to the entrance, with my tray full of food, sauces, and piña colada and cut through a ton of people waiting in three other lines. Just why?! Lastly, while the service was quick and efficient, I tried to ask a few questions about what they recommended while ordering and the cashier I spoke with was pretty rude and had no interest in discussing the food. Which, fine. It's busy, I get it. But it definitely took a little bit away from the experience for me. Overall, a great place to grab some seafood and enjoy the views. When I head back to City Island, I'll probably try somewhere else, even if it's a little more expensive to hopefully find some of the ambiance that Johnny Reef's was lacking (and less of the chaos.) If I do make it back here, I'll make sure to not be hangry (it is a LONG multiple train + bus trip from Brooklyn to City Island) and maybe I'll be able to bump them up to 4 stars. read more

**CASH ONLY** I rarely carry cash so this is a pretty important fact for me. No frills cafeteria-style service. Abundant covered outdoor seating. But dopey me wanted to sit close to the water. Despite signs everywhere telling people to not feed the seagulls... they feed the seagulls. So we spent the entire meal afraid of getting pooped on. Why would people waste perfectly good food to a bunch of scavenger birds? It's because the portions are so big that you'll never finish all the fries. The gulls and the geese must be made of 80% french fries. The fried flounder was tasty. The fried shrimp came in second. All the seafood was perfectly fried without gobs of batter. The french fries were mediocre at best. That's why they end up getting thrown into the Sound. I got the piña colada. It was on the small side but it had a heavy pour of rum. I could have easily drank two. It's located all the way at the end of the strip. On a weekday evening there's plenty of parking. I haven't a clue as to what it looks like on the weekend but I bet it's tight. There's public transportation on the island and the Bx29 stops right by the restaurant. Sweet. The BxM8 goes to and from Manhattan so if the craving for fried scrimps ever strikes, you have options. City Island is a summertime mecca that you have to do at least once. Huge lines but they move fast. The assembly line method really works here. The cherry stone clams were ginormous and fresh and sweet and briny. So good. The frog legs were on point. I haven't had them in many years and definitely hit the spot. Nicely fried, tender inside. The fried scallops were also delicious and perfectly tender. Overall, delicious mean with a good view. It's an old school place good for groups and for dates. We had a good time and ate till we burst. read more

After few hours hiking, we made a quick stop for lunch. The place was super packed but the service was incredibly fast. Most of the food was premade but still warm. Tried their fried fillet with fries and my friends ordered the fried whiting with fries. Both fish were super flaky! I was shocked to see they give you a whole fish with your order. It was a lot of food for $17 each. Everything looked and tasted very good. Well cooked fish, crispy batter. I am definitely coming back, don't let the line and amount of people scare you, the line goes really fast! read more

My family and I came here for lunch and to sit outside under the shade because it was a hot and humid day. We arrived early around 12 noon and it was already crowded. We were able to get a shaded table to our selves and took turns going to order our food to hold our table. They only accept cash but have an ATM right by the entrance of the restaurant. Prices were affordable for seafood dishes, however, the taste was ugh. My family all agreed that the food was bland. They also stated the food was heavily breaded. No one took home leftovers after not eating all of their food, lol I don't eat seafood and ordered some wings with fries which was fine. The atmosphere felt nice and we had a cool breeze and we all agreed the scenery was the best part. Apparently, they are doing something right though because there were a lot of people purchasing food. It will probably be awhile before we return to this spot. My family said, no time soon.
