Be careful when asking for a pina colada with coconut ciroc it was not ciroc served on the colada. This place is a staple, it's a place you go to to see what the hype is about and then realize it's really not that great. It's ok, just ok. I prefer Sammy's which is just down the road or the The Lobster house (don't confuse it with The Lobster Box...) Parking is ALWAYS full! So just pull up behind an already parked car and just wait for a spot to open, if you try to go around you will never ever find something, especially on the weekends. So just pull up, wait, then park. Walk up to the seafood line, order, wait. Walk up to drinks line, order, wait! Walk to condiments line and fill up with your favorite sauces (tartar, ketchup, cocktail sauce.) If your expectations aren't high, this place is the bomb! Will you get better food somewhere else for a better price, sure! But no one comes here for anything other than to experience the edge of the Long Island Sound and eating subpar fried shrimp and overtly sweet, overpriced Hennessy coladas. Summer in NYC means a trip to City Island, and if we are in City Island, can't leave the Island without visiting Jonny's Reef. Every summer Jonny's Reef is a must. This place has been around for a long time and for good reasons. The food is always fresh. I have had Fried scrimp, clams, chicken, and fish. Everything is always hot and fresh. Each item comes with fries and coleslaw, which taste great too. They also serve alcoholic beverages, and the pina colada is my favorite. For the amount of food you get, and the quality of it, the price is reasonable. But do note that this place only accepts cash. There are plenty of parking space but on a hot day, it does get packed so you may go around couple of times to find parking. The restaurant is located at the end of City Island with great view of the water. There are seating arrangements inside and outside. The lines to order the food gets pretty long, but they move fast. Even though this place gets very busy the staffs are always friendly. So if you like fresh and delicious seafood by the water, a visit to Jonny's Reef is a must. read more

Johnnies reef restaurant is still the same place I've been visiting for probably the last 50 years. The prices have gone up, the outside dining area has improved. I was there yesterday, I dined on incredible fried shrimp and fried clam platters. My only complaint is that they now charge one dollar for an aluminum takeout container. In my humble New York dining opinion that is complete bullshit. I've only put one star for this not because of the quality of the food which is probably three stars but because I am really pissed at this charging for a takeout container policy. read more

I used to love coming to this place because it was very nostalgic. I think they've officially lost a customer. Not that it matters because the place is always full, and people just stuff their face not caring about the food quality, so it is what it is. I ordered fried oysters and lobster rolls this Friday, treating myself after a long day of work. I drove an hour to get there. The oysters were fine, even though I feel that it was mostly breading. The part that pissed me off was that the lobster was fake. It was very mushy like imitation lobster or imitation crab. It almost brought tears to my eyes because I actually was really looking forward to it, that vision is down the drain and I should've brought it back immediately but feeling so overwhelmed , all I could do is just sigh. So I brought it home thinking maybe it was just that one, because you get two in order, no it's both of them. I really would like a refund , but I know that's not gonna happen. I do have my receipt and actually have the rest of the order in my refrigerator, because I honestly was going to go back. That's how appalled I was. I would say to other people, cautious of what you ordered there now because I feel the quality has gone down very much. The ambience is the same. It is on the water, tons of seagulls. Worst restaurant experience I've ever had in my life. Ordered a hotdog for my child and was accidentally given a cheeseburger instead. I didn't notice because it was bagged. As soon as I sat down at my table, two security goons approached and accused me of stealing the cheeseburger! One tried to grab my wife's food. It was total insanity. I did eventually get an apology from management for the wrongful actions of their security personnel (who were trying really hard to imply that they were cops, but mgmt confirmed they are not). For background reference, my parents started coming here back in the 1980's and every summer me and my siblings would enjoy the crispy fried shrimp and shoe string fries. I've moved this then and nothing beats Johnny fresh seafood. I recently had to come back up to NY for personal matters and decided to travel back down memory lane to Johnny's. This time around I tried the fried Lobster tails with the fries. WOW! That' was the main word that popped in my mind when describing them. I did notice the fries are thinking kinda resembling steak fries. Even better in my opinion and was a feasible price. This place is Cash only! If you need cash then there's an ATM machine in the front. They have everything from fried fish, raw oysters, shrimp, carb boil, mussels and etc. Anyone who's a seafood lover will be in Heaven at this place. They've now put up a glass barrier to ensure the seagulls do not try and take your food away. Even they know how great the food here is. If I could I would give this place a 10 out of 10 instead of five stars. Service was great and fast and you're not waiting long for your food. The ambiance truly hasn't changed either. The restaurant is on the southern most tip of city island. It has a beautiful outdoor summer vibes with ocean view. The fried red snapper was good. That's probably all the positives I can say. Negatives, they are cash only AND their ATM's have a maximum withdraw of 200$. So if you need more than 200$, which if you come in a group of more than 4, you probably will, you'll need to pay another fee to pull out more cash. I didn't appreciate that. Next, the little neck clams were so chewy and briny. I had 2 and threw away the rest. That is going to be a theme for our Visit to Jonny's reef and me and my friend are not people that throw away food ever. The whiting had so many bones, it was difficult to eat. The move here is to wait until the fish is completely cooled and then use your hands. Trying to eat it any other way while it's hot is impossible because of how many bones there are in it. The fries were ok but some baskets had well done and other baskets were soft and soggy. The steamed calamari was flavorless and needed salt badly. I would get fried calamari not steamed. Lastly, the chicken wings were extremely dry. Like Sahara desert dry. I can only guess that they were frozen wings and fried multiple times and overdone. This place is like a big lunch room cafeteria. They have a bar counter where you get your drinks, then they have a fry counter, where you order all the fried options they have available, then they have a steamed counter, the soup counter, and the sides like fries, onion rings etc., and maybe more that I forget, the point... alot of counters with plastic separating you from the next person. I ordered the red soup,(Manhattan clam chowder) and went to another counter to order some garlic bread. I also went to the bar to order a sangria, and later some onion rings that I didn't get to take a picture of because they were really good and they give you a large amount. So overall I was satisfied with all that I had ordered. What I was not happy with was the fact that they only took cash. They have an ATM machine but I still wasn't expecting this. I guess it make a lil since because most of city isand sort of has upscale reasurants, this is more of a fast food joint. That is fine but even fast food spots take credit/debit. The good thing about this is they don't charge you tax, it's just straight on the dollar. They have indoor and outdoor dining and because of the weather changing the outdoor dining now has been completely insulated and has heat. I would say it's still probably better here in the warmer months but if you want to make a visit today you won't have to worry about being cold. So if you want a place for just hanging out with some friends, family, colleagues etc. This is a good option but I would not recommend this place for date night unless you been with your mate for a very long time, I mean very long... Very disappointing. I had them two summers ago and wasn't impressed but decided to give them another try. I was really in the mood for some Jumbo Fried Shrimp and I remembered they have them. The n fortunately, what I got were these small medium shrimp and was told they don't do the jumbo shrimp any more. Also, the shrimp were not crispy but soggy and soft. This really was not worth the trip from Long Island. Unless you just want something edible, ok. But if you want something great, this is not the place. read more

I typically come here after my meal to chill and enjoy the area outside while snacking on fried seafood and drinks. They serve a good variety of fried seafood, raw seafood, and drinks for cheap! The fried seafood would be around $20 but it's a big portion and it comes with fries. It's also not really seasoned but they give you salt and pepper on the side. The restaurant is straightforward and no frills but you get excellent high quality, fresh seafood that is priced very reasonably. You order drinks, steamed or fried seafood, sides, and alcohol from separate counters, which works out well and keeps things moving. I was drawn to the fried lobster tail based on the pictures, but fully expected it to be a disappointment...man oh man was I wrong! The lobster tails are huge, fried to perfection, and so decadent. Considering the number of lobster tails in each order piled sky high on top of a bed of fresh cut fries and cole slaw, one order would be enough to feed 2-3 people comfortably. Get the fried shrimp, and maybe one other item and you will be feasting like royalty. Once you have your food, grab a pina colada or a daiquiri and you'll feel like you're on vacation as you stare out into the water and wonder to yourself "am I really in New York right now?!" I took the Family here instead of going to Dallas BBQ. It was a nice out and I figured let's eat somewhere outside and enjoy the warm weather with some nice scenery. The kids wanted fried shrimp with french fries the adults got Whiting fillets with french fries and coleslaw.
