We were fans from the opposing team, I guess I was expecting bad service due to that. But we almost received the opposite. We've been here a few times, it wasn't until recently that we had a bad experience. My husband picked up a pizza to go. Upon getting the pizza home it was greatly undercooked and it was flipped over on itself. We called the business and they insisted we not bring the pizza back and that they would send us a gift card in return. I like Johnny's Tavern. It is great for large groups, but can be pretty noisy. Standard pub fare, though the pizzas are what you should come for! The barbeque chicken pizza is really good! I came here once while they were having a crawfish boil special. They were dry and disgusting! I know that Lawrence isn't the place for crawfish (like say Louisiana - YUM!!!), so I can't knock them toooo much, but still, they were pretty bad. Personally, Johnny's has the best pizza in town. You can get pizza by the slice, burgers, and wraps. My favorite pizza is the BBQ Chicken Pizza. They make their own BBQ sauce from scratch. It is so delicious. Also, the atmosphere is unique. It is filled with KU gear. It is a great place to watch the Jayhawks play! They have something on the menu for everyone, and the wait staff is very friendly and outgoing. On Monday nights they have a pizza/beer deal. Oh Johnny's! Many a night in college was spent just north of the bridge at Johnny's Tavern. I still frequent the bar during rugby season as my husband is on the club team. Johnny's is a great bar and restaurant. The staff is very friendly and will do whatever they can to make your visit a great one. Most of the time you can see the owner, Rick, walking around and seeing how everything is going. Johnny's has plenty of TVs to catch whatever game you are looking for. Especially if the Jayhawks are playing. They have two bar rooms and a rent-able upstairs (The Up And Under). As well as a covered patio for smokers or those who just need some fresh air after some drinks. There are drink specials just about every night and a variety of menu choices. The pizza is wonderful, go for the all-meat Nuke LaLoosh if you dare. The burgers and fries are another delicious combo. Have fun and challenge a friend to a little Buck Hunter! read more

Ate at Johhny's for the second time last week, with so many great bars and restaurants in Lawrence, I won't be back. Ever. Arrived around 6pm to a locked front door - hmmm? but the place was 1/2 full. Someone unlocked the door for us newbies and we found a booth. I guess everyone uses the back entrance. Waited 10 minutes, and just before we got up to leave, a server stopped by. Pretty late to the table, but she actually ended up being really accommodating and sweet. Ordered a draft, keg was dry, ordered another draft, another dry keg. Finally settled on a third choice - and they had it! For the meal. Ordered a slice of Italian pie & the nachos. The slice came out first: large, thin, slightly crispy. And slightly pricy at $4.99. Reminded me of a Totino's freezer pizza, but in a good way. Decent, but it was sprinkled with dry herbs - not a fan, they always taste a bit dusty. Then came the nachos. Oh what a crying shame. How can you make bad nachos? THE GOOD: nice thin chips, good salsa, topped with fresh tomato & green onion. THE BAD: too light on the sour cream, jalapenos were from a tin can, and the brownish-colored "cheese" tasted like bland flour gravy instead of melty cheese - THIS coming from two people that actually really love the fake creamy nacho cheese served at basketball games. read more

The local Lawrence writers have become something of regulars at Johnny's (and Johnny's West), and while I have nothing against either of these places I can't rave about them either. The burgers and other menu items are typical bar fare. It's good, possibly better than average. But nothing about the food stands out. The Popper Burger (with Jalapeño chipotle cream) is probably the best burger on their menu. As a hangout, it's pretty good but can get a little too loud for conversation (especially on the weekends). If you're looking for a place to hang out with friends, though, you can do far worse. read more

Johnny's (all of them) are regular haunts for us. The one in Lawrence especially is an institution. On this particular occasion the Hubs & I were out for a motorcycle ride with a friend and stopped in. We were greeted warmly by the owner (also an institution!) and seated. He took our drink orders and went in search of sweetener for my friend's tea but apparently got distracted because he never made it back. A server popped by and took an app order and brought the requested sweetener. Still another server took our entree order and the remainer of our service was with her. She was very sweet but a little forgettful (a couple of items had to be requested twice). The food is predictably good although the Lawrence Johnny's doesn't serve the fish & chips with the hush puppies the other locations do (disappointing!). The service is a little uneven but it's so friendly and the food is so good you tend to overlook it read more

Just say no to the Reuben Sandwich cause you can't find more than a teaspoon of sauerkraut in it and the 1000 island dressing was absent. I have mixed feelings about this place. GOOD STUFF 1. It has a great, neighborhood, 'everyone welcome' vibe that is relaxed, cheerful & folksy. 2. It has some killer sandwiches that rocked my world. 3. It has all the KU games on that any fan would want to watch. 4. It has tons of parking. 5. It is convenient & easy to find. NOT SO GOOD STUFF 1. Their pizza is the worst thing I have ever eaten (other than when I was in India & had to eat raw cow tongue). It was thin, dry, overcooked & absent of ingredients. 2. They can't seem to get that complicated new ordering system/order tracking/payment processing system down. At times there are 3 or 4 employees huddled around the cash register staring at it (& perhaps waiting for a message from God). Why not reach out to God for wisdom & guidance, get some training for the staff, download some instruction manuals or bring in the staff during slow times to teach them how to use it! It ain't rocket science guys...... 3. Put more of the employees to work, rather than letting them stand around and do nothing. Every time I have been there (4 times so far) there are at least 4-5 employees doing absolutely nothing while 1 or 2 people are scrambling to fulfill orders & take care of customers. Have you ever heard the phrase "too many cooks in the kitchen?", perhaps you should give it some thought, as a few more cooks or active employees may help. read more

So with wife working late tonight, my teenage son and I elected to try out "Cajun Nite" at Johnny's. What a mistake. First it took 5-7 minutes for anyone to bring us a menu. Pro tip, if you have open seating, keep a look out for patrons in your section. Luckily the manager saw we didn't have drinks or menus and took care of that. A few moments later, upon asking about the "cajun special" the manager said it was Shrimp and Grits. He couldn't describe it, and asked a patron at a nearby table how it was. When she replied "it's ok" I should have cut my losses and left. But we plowed forward. We ordered an appetizer and while waiting I noticed another nearby patron send his food back due to it being cold. Again, alarms sounded. But we pressed on. I ordered Jambalaya, my son a fried seafood platter. Upon our arrival I was beyond disappointed. Not only was the jambalaya lukewarm at best but the rice was slightly crunchy. My son bit into his fried fish and said it was awful. He tried everything and really enjoyed the hushpuppies. I took a bite as well. Cheap shrimp and tasteless fish. WTH. The manager came by again. Apparantely the server didn't think her job was to be a server, but instead walk around aimlessly in a costume that mimmicked 90's grunge. After my son gave it a great try, I said something to the manager and asked for a burger for the young man. Burger came out quickly and he ate it. Johnny's burger are generally edible. Much to my surprise, upon bringing the bill, I was still charged for the horrible fried bullshit platter and maybe the manager didn't hear me say that the Jambalya was cold over the band that was not even trying to be in the same genre with the "Cajun Nite" theme. I paid the bill and left. Obviously, the managers hearing is bad and he didn't notice any of the signs of unhappy customers (half eaten plates). Maybe he was made to eat the shitty Cajun Food and that was the result. Needless to say, I won't be back. As someone who grew up on seafood and south Louisiana cajun food, I was very excited to stop in for a "Cajun Nite." How about next time you have "Cajun Nite" you be more truthful. Call it "Cold Jambalya, shitty frozen fish and shrimp with even shittier service night." If that doesn't fit on the sign, get smaller letters. read more

It's hard not to love Johnny's. I love to Johnny's when I was practicing with the rugby team and we all got together here. I loved Johnny's after that when we came here for game days. I loved Johnny's when I regularly came out for Cajun night. And now I'd love to come in here with my kids and reminisce about the old days. They love the pizza and I like almost everything on the menu. You're not going to find any fancy stuff on the menu here, but that's not all we come in here for. The beer is cold and the service is good and so is the food. read more

It is the best pizza in town! This place has been a Lawrence destination since the days the ruggers of Lawrence took over in the 70's! They still hang out there after their games during the season. You can't visit Lawrence without visiting Johnny's Tavern, friendly, fun, historical. They opened Johnny's West last year on 6th and Wakarusa. It has the same great pizza and burgers. It is like the grown up version of the Original full of history too. read more

During the week is best to go for a meal. The place needs a deep clean. Bathrooms are gross also needs cleaning. Food is not the same as the Johnny's West (which is way cleaner). The waitress only came by once to ask for refills or anything else that we may have needed. You have to ask for napkins since they don't leave any on the table. read more

The waitresses don't care and the service usually leaves something to be desired.
