I'm fine with cold veggies on nachos, but the cold shredded cheese is very interesting and not a move I've seen before.

The gravy is a great addition to the table. The fried mushrooms are perfect too! Is it fancy? No- but that's what helps the charm! The North Star is dimly lit and there are old-time items and family pics on display- a warm inviting touch- but the food more than makes up for any lack of decor. Definitely one of my faves and why I'm a repeat customer!

So a couple Friday nights ago our large party of family and friends visited the reincarnated old school steakhouse (former speakeasy) to celebrate my wife's birthday. We could not have been more satisfied with the level of personal attention and service from both our hard worker server and Amy one of the new owners herself. They truly made us feel like welcomed and like long time regulars. I highly recommend reservations using their website system during daytime non-business hours. They were able to add a late addition of 4 extra guests to our party due to another cancellation, but trust me and get a reservation particularly on weekends. On to the table. Their fresh dinner rolls were to die for. Soft and deliciously doughy. We loved the family style french fries and hash browns served with wonderful bowls of brown country gravy on the side for dipping or smothering. The bacon wrapped filets were perfectly prepared and had that classic steakhouse smoked flavor from the bacon. And lastly, the North Star bread pudding was world class if you're an aficionado of the homestyle treat. We can't wait for our soon to come next visit!

There are places you plan to visit, and then there are places you stumble into--the kind that feel…read morelike they've been sitting there for years, quietly daring you to notice them. Little Russia Chili Parlor is the latter. A small, out-of-the-way joint in Topeka that doesn't scream for attention--but once you walk in, it doesn't need to. The air alone tells you you're in the right place. This is Daniela's house. Not in the literal sense, but in the way that matters. She runs the place with the kind of confidence you don't fake--part host, part artist, part benevolent dictator of flavor. You don't get the sense that anything leaves that kitchen unless it meets her standard, and that standard is unapologetically high. Start with the pickles. Yeah, pickles. The kind that makes you pause mid-bite and reconsider every sad, limp grocery store version you've ever tolerated. These are spiced, alive, sharp in all the right ways--like they've got a story to tell and no patience for small talk. Then there's the baked goods coming in from Oakland's Bakery--local, honest, the kind of bread that actually tastes like grain and effort instead of air and preservatives. And then you hit the sides. The spiced pimento cheese spread isn't some afterthought--it's a statement. Smoky, a little dangerous, layered in a way that suggests someone in that kitchen understands restraint just as well as indulgence. It's the kind of thing you keep eating long after you've told yourself you're done. But let's not kid ourselves. You came here for the chili. And the chili... the chili doesn't just deliver--it recalibrates. Deep, complex, unapologetically bold. It's not trying to be trendy or Instagram-friendly. It's trying to be right. The kind of bowl that makes you slow down, lean in, and pay attention. Every spoonful feels deliberate, like it's been simmering not just for hours, but for years of trial, error, and quiet perfection. The sandwiches? Stacked, messy in the best way, built on that Oakland's Bakery foundation like someone actually cares about what bread is supposed to do--hold everything together without getting in the way. This place doesn't need hype. It doesn't need a rebrand or a marketing push. It exists in that rare space where authenticity isn't a strategy--it's just how things are done. You don't come to Little Russia Chili Parlor to be seen. You come because someone told you, quietly, "Trust me." And if you're smart, you listen.

We started with chili this time but next time we will try the sandwiches. Any place with homemade pickles wins my heart - they had three kinds. And a cracker trough made from a garden planter. And pimento cheese. Basically, it was amazing. And the chili was super tasty too.

So we got my mom to watch the kiddos and headed to Topeka for my 40th birthday meal. WORTH.THE.DRIVE. They have a 5 course tasting menu. The building itself is beautiful and historic. We absolutely loved the ambiance. They had Christmas music playing- and I love Christmas so I was a fan. We each had a cocktail that we loved. Mine was called something Soirée. It has this sprig of rosemary clipped to the glass so that every time you take a drink you get this amazing aromatic experience. Our server was super nice. We loved the risotto dish and the dessert- those were my two favorite. My only complaint was he was the only server- they could have used two. The experience could have been At least 30-45 Minutes quicker as we arrived at 6:30 and headed home at 8:45. It seems all the tables had each course around the same time rather than each table setting the timing for our own meal. The food was worth it though so no big deal. It was around $200 pretip But we felt very much worth it. We had a great time and will be back for sure!

However i would be lying if i said the quality of food was worth the price. I have no problem spending extra for fine dining, but i expect an exceptional quality and with each course my wife and I felt like the dish was extravagant only in name and display while it was confusing and lacking in taste.
