John's Donuts...this is my (and my friends as well) favorite place to get donuts in STL. We will make late night runs to John's donuts when we have free time. My personal favorite donut here is the butter twist donuts. When you take a bite into this donut, you get the nice sweet buttery glaze that goes so well with donut. Once you finish one, you have this urge to eat another one!! This is one of the best glazed-style type of donuts that I have tried. I've tried some of their other donuts, notably the apple fritter, and I find them to be good overall. However, I think the butter twist donut is the star here! Yeah, they got some weird hours (opens at 11pm), but every time that I have come here, there's always people in the store wanting to get donuts. I've had multiple donuts from John's Donut before I've actually visited the store. Fortunately for me, my company gets donuts every Friday, though it doesn't help the waistline, it does make working where I do a little more sweet (pun intended). I finally paid a visit when I had a friend in town. After I opened his eyes to non-chain donuts, he was hooked. We walked in and was met with the super friendly staffed. My go to at a donut shop is always the apple fritters, and do they make a mean apple fritter. I would say that's my favorite I've had from them, but they're fried pieces of dough can you really go wrong? Highly recommended. I will be back to eat all the donuts. read more

Just when I thought there wasn't a donut that I didn't like . . . Soulard is known for its decadence. It's not hard to find a place to indulge one's self on the Island. However, one aspect that the island lacks is donuts. You'll find John Donut Company just on the other side of the tracks, technically in the mostly vacant Kosciusko neighborhood. HIdden in the industrial and overall displeasing hood, JDC provides both poor service and mediocre donuts. I only came in once, and once was more than enough. I like to document every new place I check out, like many Yelpers do, and John's wouldn't be any different. However, after taking a few photos outside, the clerk behind the counter said something rather sarcastic to me, obsiously not entertained by my touristy gestures. I tried to explain what I was doing, but he wasn't having it. Despite our rocky beginnings, I was willing to ignore his sassback if the donuts were spot on. However, they were not. A few weeks ago Christian K. had posted pictures of donuts and he wasn't willing to share which meant I needed to go buy my own. It was a Friday morning and I left for work a littler earlier than usual. I had donuts on my mind and since John's is literally in my neighborhood I decided to go try them out for myself. I was able to park right in front of John's and I walked right in. I was greeted immediately by the lady behind the counter. I also heard a few "hello's" from the other patrons inside. I bet they are regulars! They were sitting at a table and enjoying their morning coffee with their own donuts. How cute. I was in a good mood that morning and so I decided to order a dozen so that I could share with the ladies in my office. It was so hard to make a decision. I wanted to try everything. I ordered an apple fritter because I heard they make the best and then I just pointed to donuts and she put them in the box for me. It was over before I knew it, but I had a ton of fun! I was so thankful that I had cash that day because apparently they are a cash only establishment. Keep that in mind if you are inspired to go for a visit. I paid at the counter and also ordered a coffee to go. By the time I got to work I was so eager and excited to eat a donut that I opened the box and pulled out the apple fritter. I could not let anyone else have that one. It was mine. All mine. And it was delicious just as everyone else has mentioned. So fresh and I swear it was still warm from the oven. Yummy! You MUST try the apple fritter. It's like a donut wrapped in another donut. It's also like eating the middle of a Cinnabon with every bite. Stopped here with some friends the other night at 11:00pm -- to my knowledge this place is open from 11:00 to 1:00pm every day -- and within 10 minutes we were all practically rolling on the ground in a sugar-induced coma. We each tried two donuts each, and at about $0.70 each, it took a whole lot of self control not to make it three or even four. The apple fritter was our definite favorite, but everything else was pretty solid, except for perhaps my chocolate cake vanilla frosted donut, which had the mildest of chemical aftertastes. Maybe that fritter spoiled me. The atmosphere is quirky -- there was a zombie grandpa in a Santa suit in a wheelchair sitting beside us -- but that's kind of what you expect when you go into an old-timey donut place, anyway, right? There was a refrigerator filled with milk, soda, and water, but be forewarned -- once that sugar gets into your bloodstream, it can't be diluted -- your only option is to wait it out. Part of what makes this place interesting is not being able to get a donut when you really really want one. They're only open late at nights and early in the morning. Craving a mid-afternoon donut? Sorry, looks like you're out of luck - going to have to wait it out. I, personally have only been able to make it down once to the shop (that to early in the morning), but I've had their donuts several times, when friends bring back a dozen us to try. The fun thing about this place is that every trip here usually has some interesting story. I never get tired of hearing hilarious anecdotes of what happened to my friends or what they've seen on their trip down here - flat tires, bickering couples, etc (you think you've heard it all and then another story comes along). When you place an order here, know exactly what you want and don't ask too many questions. The servers can get a little rude, but it's all in good fun. Not sure what to get? Try an Apple Fritter - I have never met anybody who doesn't like one from here. They're sweet, crispy, and baked to perfection. There is a review below that is just unbelievably bogus. Jake S, states that many false things happened in his experience at Johns Donuts. This is an amazing establishment. Of my many years of enjoyment from this place, I've never experienced poor service, nor have any of my many friends who've enjoyed John's Donuts with me. I hope nobody reads this review and takes it at face value. These guys will go above an beyond to talk with you as they fill your order. They always have a smile and they even remember the many faces that come through. You can tell because, sometimes when people approach to order you hear comments such as, "She sent you in alone today, huh" (to which I had to chuckle). When I'm not running late, I try to stop in with my extra time to get my same order (Apple fritter and a plain glazed for my co-worker). It's part because you're not going to find better donuts and part because I've kinda grown to really like the people. I hope you guys are around forever. John's Donuts are a right of passage in St. Louis. You absolutely have to come here at 11:00 PM for some freshly baked donuts. Make sure that you get the freshly made donuts (because obviously those are the most delicious). I highly recommend the chocolate donuts and the apple fritters. Also, be prepared to wait in line even though you will be asking yourself "who is at a donut place at such an odd hour." All the cool kids, clearly. You have to come here at least once. OMG this place is amazing. I mean I really don't know how to describe it, but if you're looking for the perfect yeast donut, this is the place to go, especially late night when they come out fresh. I've never had an apple fritter before, but was told this was the go to here, I may not ever eat another variety of donut after this experience. The place itself has some seating, it's very old timey with little frills. Sometimes at night (I've only been at night) it gets crowded with the Wash U crowd so there's not always a place to sit. Also, know that there are no bathrooms. Be forwarned, the balding guy behind the counter is rude, but friendly. How does that make sense you ask? I think it's all part of his sthickt and the charm of the place. I enjoy bantering with him, and he hurls his one liners with a smile. I moved back to St. Louis from Memphis back in August. Memphis has an amazing old school doughnut shop that has been featured on food network & other places. Since moving back I have been disappointed! Sure, there is no such thing as a bad doughnut, but man there is such a think as a great doughnut! John's has great doughnuts and the apple fritter was a religious experience! It's a fun little spot with seating! I do wish they had a bathroom being that I have kids and the pee every ten seconds. This place is perfect for soulard!!! It's technically just outside Soulard, but I'll claim it since I live in Soulard and would love to add it to the roster of stellar establishments. After hearing a lot of good things about this place and that they are open from 11:00 PM to Noon, we decided to swing by on a Saturday morning before going to the Soulard Market. Boy am I glad that we finally went! We can't wait to go back. I even joked about going back again tonight after they reopened. I wouldn't be mad at all about eating donuts from this place twice in one day. This place is pretty old school, laid back, and casual. You walk in and the place is covered with all kinds of colorful decorations, including some random Superman themed memorabilia, Cardinals memorabilia, coffee mug collections, and a bunch of other random stuff. There are also a couple interesting Donut themed murals on the wall. There is NO MENU. There are no tags for the donuts so you'll have to ask if you can't guess what is what and there are no prices for anything posted anywhere, which is kind of cool, especially because everything is so cheap you don't have to worry about cost. We ordered 4 donuts and a bottled chocolate milk and it was under $5. i believe you have to spend a minimum of $5 to use a credit/debit card. We had 2 glazed twist donuts that were quite delicious for how simple they were. She had a raspberry jam filled glaze donut that she enjoyed very much. I had a cinnamon roll donut that had caramel frosting and it was AMAZING!! I wished I had gotten 2 of that one. There was also many others that we wanted to try, but we can only eat so many at once. Next time, for sure!! The family that runs this place is hilarious. We had a great time sitting in there eating our donuts listening to them talk to each other and customers as they came in. So there are very few places I try to get to whenever I'm in STL, and this is one of them. John's donuts is a tradition of mine. Who doesn't like donuts, don't trust that person, but anyways John's always serves up the fresh donuts late at night and it's never disappointed me. Maybe it is the booths, or the superman merchandise lining the walls, or just the customer service they have there, but I just can't stay away. I have eaten quite a few donuts, but the warm fresh donuts from John's don't disappoint with their chewy perfect texture and their delightful amount of sugar. Simply put these were the best donuts by far in St. Louis. The donuts are fried to a golden brown and crispy. I had the twists which were huge, crisp on the outside and melting away on the inside. Okay so I've been mean do to this review for a LONG while now! I found John Donuts Co because I was going to be in St Louis for work one week and needed to pick up about 13-15 dozen donuts for some meeting I had. Now maybe there is something I don't know about but in MO, Dunkin Doughnuts are not on every corner like here in Chicago lol. In fact I when looking a week prior to what will be in the area for Donuts I didn't find much of anything. But luckily I did find this place! The reviews cracked me up so I was like what the hell! Why not? So I called ahead for 13 dozens and set off on my tip. When I got there to pick up my donuts I was at first worried I was heading into the wrong area. Its very industrial and by a tattoo place.. but don't be alarm you are there! The donuts are about $6-7 a dozen (can't remember exactly cause I ordered so much) and they rang me up and offered me free coffee to go with the purchase. Which I thought was sweet cause in Chicago, I've made these big orders and never get offered anything free! But even better they guys helped me bring the stuff out to the car. I know it sounds dumb to even mention this.. but I have ordered for MANY of MANY places for these meetings and its rare these days for people to want to help you cause they just don't care. Here at John's they are so friendly, and give you a good laugh in the morning. And let me tell you, I also ordered bagels from another retailer and at the meeting the people were going crazy about the donuts asking me where I got them and I was happy to say its only 15 mins away! In fact they were such a hit. I decided to pick up about 8 more dozen for small meetings I had the next day. Once again I stop in and they staff was great and even made me take some free donuts for my self and helped me to my car. They have this apple crisp donut... and OMG I want to drive all the way back out there just for that. Big chain places have NOTHING on these donuts! This place is so cool! It's run by a bunch of nocturnal people (11 pm - noon hours) and serves delicious fresh, hot, wonderful donuts. My friends and I came here at 11 pm the other night. We all got 2 donuts to start... and then i ordered 7 more. The dough is warm and chewy and pretty much perfection. The guy at the counter will yell at you. It's part of the experience. The decor is all bright, eclectic, with surprising amounts of superman. You see them cutting the donuts in the back. The smell will make you drool. Come back here after getting drunk at night. John's is a great old school donut shop. They stick to what they do best and simply sell donuts and coffee, milk, drinks, etc to go with them. This shop has been around for decades and is located about 2 blocks directly east of Soulard Market. Apple fritters are Johns most popular donuts (92 cents including tax). The custards and glazed are great as well. Parking is all on the street and there are a few tables inside to use if you want to enjoy your donuts in the shop. The employees are all friendly and have been helpful when I am undecided. I ended up at John's after stocking up on fruits and veggies at the Soulard Market. It was about ten minutes before they were closing up shop but the donut selection was still pretty good. I got an old fashioned (my go to donut) and Alex got a vanilla long john. We were digging these donuts and talking to the workers when the service here really shined, which earned John's the 5th star from me. We were all talking about other donuts offered at the store when one of the workers brought us two other donuts to sample! I mean come on, who doesn't like free donuts?!?!? The two other donuts we tried were a peanut/cinnamon one and a Danish twist. The Danish twist is now my new donut obsession! It has croissant characteristics with it's flaky dough. The butter in this donut really balances out the sweetness, leaving it with the perfect flavor. Not only does John's put out a good product, but the service is awesome and I like the environment they have going on. A small family business feel with random decorations adorning the store. I wasn't aware that it is also a late night spot, but next time I get a midnight sweet tooth this might be my place to go, otherwise I'll be back next time I go to the Soulard Market! read more

My daughter and I have been coming here at least once a week now for the past month! We love donuts and this place never disappoints! Plus it's close to home and easy to get to. Back when I was 18 years old and cooking up donut-esque cakes in my Easy-Bake Oven, I could only dream of baking something so magnificent as the donuts at John Donut. Why would anyone ever go to Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme when donut shops like this exist? My dad is a donut connoisseur and he absolutely loves this place. He lives out in West County, though, so he rarely gets them. I got him a dozen for his birthday and he said it was the greatest gift I ever got him. Even better than the wallet I made for him when I was 6 that said "I love you, dad" on it. He actually tried to return that to Wal-Mart with a fake receipt the next day. His absolute favorite John donut, or Johnnie as I call them/just made up, is the chocolate long john. Mine is the Boston cream. My mom's is the apple fritter. My brother likes one of the jelly filled ones. As you can see we're a very disagreeable family. The holidays are a nightmare! Prices are pretty much on par with any other place I've been. 150-200 ha'pennies will get you a donut. I only started drinking coffee recently so I don't know much about comparisons. Theirs tastes like coffee to me. Parking is right out front on a wide, empty street. I haven't gone to too many of the other STL donut shops. I try to limit my intake as best I can. I've heard they're fattening and go right to the hips. I can't have that. It's bikini season somewhere. With that said, I'd rank John next to Donut Drive-In and ahead of World's Fair. read more
