I've been craving for donuts and John's Donuts came highly recommend from a friend who's a STL native. I made the trip to Soulard mid-morning and have to admit that it didn't disappoint! We got a half dozen donuts and my favorite was the good old plain glazed donut. The long John and apple fritter were the next best ones. According to my friend, they used to open late night/very early morning hours, so it was THE go-to spot after a night out. Of note, there's a minimum for credit/debit card transaction. So make sure to bring some cash just in case.

Super friendly, pleasant & prompt service. They had exactly what I needed to provide a delicious morning treat to my co-workers as a random act of kindness. Needless to say the donuts were devoured. Packed in a cute little box. Priced appropriately. Variety of options along with beverages to wash the sugar rush away. Clean, COVID friendly. Masks required upon entry and worn by employees. Ample parking in front.

The best part of college- going to John's donuts at 11:40pm when the fresh glazed donuts were put out! Another quality memory- going to John's before watching the sunrise at the Arch! They have many selections if you go at a busy time in the morning (not 4am).

Haven't made it to Johns for awhile now and I forgot just how fresh the donuts are! At 9:15 they were already out of a lot of flavors but the butter twist was delicious. No one was in there as we ordered which was surprising for a Saturday morning. The server didn't make us feel rushed as we considered our options. Some of the best donuts in STL for sure!

Really enjoyed the donuts from here. The jelly donut actually has a good amount of jelly in it which is hard to find! I'll be back!

Wow! These donuts are amazing. We got them on a Saturday morning and they were all fresh. My favorites were the chocolate pea r butter and the vanilla chocolate twist one. Will definitely be back

    Table service? Um, no.

This isn't a millennial hipster, 4-buck-a-cup coffee shop with a barn wood interior and some fancy pastries. It's an old style donut shop--and a mighty fine one at that. One block from Soulard Market, John's cases are filled with traditional glazed, cake, cream filled, long johns, fritters and other fried dough treats. I didn't experience the owner's personality other Yelpers described. There was, however, plenty of personality on display in the dozens of wall signs that basically stated the customer wasn't always right--but management always was.

donuts here are simple, no bells and whistles like a lot of the fancy donutteries i've seen, but really tasty. they're also very affordable, a dozen for $15 or so! the apple fritters were my favorite but the yeast ones were also nice and pillowy.

Finally got a chance to try out the dones from a Soulard staple, John's Donuts. After years and years of hearing my friends rave about the donuts at John's Donuts, I was very excited to stop by to see what all the hullabaloo was about. The store is located on the east side of Broadway near the Soulard market. Technically it is not Soulard, but damn close enough. The area it's located in is a tad seedy as it's an industrial area and not high trafficked. When you walk into John's Donuts you're immediately overtaken by the sweet scent of grease and years of donuts being served up to hungry patrons. The interior is super decorated. As in, the walls are covered in Superman stuff. So I was expecting some SUPER flavors with all the DC decor. I got up to the counter and was met with an abundance of options. I wanted to get an idea of the offerings at John's Donuts, so I ordered an apple fritter and a cruller. Talk about affordable! My total was just over $2. I couldn't wait to dive in, chomping into the cruller first. My initial reaction was not what I had hoped. The donut was slightly dry, and the cruller was a bit stale. The only flavor in the bite was the chocolate frosting on top. I wasn't blown away and ended up only eating half. The apple fritter was a little bit better, but not much. There wasn't a strong apple flavor. I don't think there was even any apple bits or anything. The fritter was super greasy and that was the predominant flavor. Reading reviews, it seems like John's Donuts is a hotspot for the late night crowd to grab something to soak up their evening. I can totally see how their donuts are a post bar delicacy, but I would prefer something a little lighter on the grease for a sober breakfast.

Quality: 5 Stars This place isn't running for most creative. It's for the donut purist. Those who love classic donuts MUST GO HERE! My favorites are the apple fritters and glazed twists. Quantity and Price: 5 Stars Anytime you roll in to this place, make sure to get a dozen! I paid $12 for 12 donuts. Can't beat that. By the time you finish savoring the first bite, you've probably finished the donut. Advice: Get the apple fritter donuts! I've taken these donuts to countless amounts of friends, and all have loved them. Give this hole in the wall a shot! The weird hours do seem unconventional until you are up late at night wishing you were eating a donut.

    Glazed Jelly Donut! Yummy!

Or at least that's what I like to romanticize. My wife and I are kicking off donut Wednesday with a trip to Donut House on Morganford. I described ourselves to the proprietor as long-time passersby, first-time stopper in. We had been by Donut House 100s of times and decided to make Donut House our inaugural Donut Wednesday stop (we'll probably do every other or 1 out of 3 Wednesdays). We both have our favorites...hers blueberry cake, apple fritter, cinnamon roll. His...blueberry cake, apple fritter and a custard filled chocolate. Not disappointed at all, these donuts were great! The blueberry cakes were light, fluffy and blueberry bombs. The apple fritter was like a light, fluffy deep fried apple pie...great cinnamon and tart apple...maybe the best I've ever had. The custard filled chocolate is my personal litmus test...this one was good but not great. Could have used more custard BUT is there ever a bad donut??? NEVER. Glad we stopped in and will do so again. FYI there is seating inside and plenty of off street parking. Plus the light at Morganford / Seibert makes going an easy in / out. Oh and there is a drive thru...way too easy.

A Cautionary Tale (a real one, not a tall tale): First, I…read morecan't say that I'm writing a super fair review, because I haven't ever been into this donut shop. But my mom bought us some donuts from Olde Towne Donuts. I had a bite of a chocolate cake donut and it tasted fine. However, after eating a chocolate Long John, my 15 year old son informed me that he needed his rescue inhaler and some Benadryl pills, because he was having an allergic reaction. We didn't eat anything unusual for dinner. And the donut was the only other thing he ate. When I called the shop to ask if they use any kind of soy protein or pea protein in the ingredients- sure enough, they do. Before calling, I had searched on their facebook page a little to find out it if they had some special feature to their donuts- like "healthier" because of added protein, but I didn't see any mention of ingredients. When I called to ask, the girl who I initially asked wasn't sure what kind of ingredients they used, so I guess a head baker or owner got on the phone and confirmed that they used soy protein in their donuts. I'm not mad- thankfully my son was pretty quick to recognize it and was home where we were able to give him what he needed right away. Still, I caution not only customers with allergies or sensitivities, but I also have a strong word of advice to the owners: if you don't already have notices of this added protein ingredient posted in the store clearly as a warning, as well as on your website/ social media pages, I urge you to do so. It could seriously be a matter of life or death. My son has what people typically refer to as a "peanut allergy"; people who truly have that allergy are not allergic to nuts (I suppose someone could also have a nut allergy on top of it), but they are allergic to much more than just peanuts; it is a legume allergy. Legumes are plant foods formed inside pods, like beans, peas, and pea"nuts". Nowadays, there are so many unexpected foods that can cause an anaphylactic reaction for people with a legume allergy, because so many processed foods have protein as a filler (like highly processed frozen chicken nuggets). And now manufacturers are proud to boast their food item has "added protein". It is the legume protein that causes the severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis. Which can often occur immediately upon ingesting the allergen and the life threatening symptoms can progress in just a matter of minutes. Thankfully, my son's reaction is not immediate- he usually has at least 30min before it becomes serious requiring immediate intervention, and lately he's been able to curb it by taking Benadryl, but he has had many ER visits and epinephrine as a young child. I have often been warned and urged by nurses and doctors not to take the risk of waiting, but to use the EpiPen injector and call 911 as soon as it is realized that ingested an allergen- even before symptoms- or as soon as he has symptoms -even if he's not sure he ingested an allergen. My point in sharing all of this is to emphasize the importance and seriousness of the matter. Please make it known to your customers in some obvious way (and certainly such that your employees would know) that your delicious donuts are made with soy protein (or pea protein or chickpea protein, or lentil protein- believe me, those are all used as added plant proteins.) Reading labels is second nature to our family, but it's so hard when something fresh made incorporates the allergen into their food that would not typically have added proteins. We love donuts and have eaten them from so many different donut shops and houses of donuts all over the country, but never encountered a hidden allergen in the dough. Let the people know, please!
