This seems like a hidden treasure near Lake St. George but don't be fooled - this is clearly the place the locals go. We arrived to a long line and only one employee working. Nobody seemed to care... another sign that the ice cream must be worth the wait. They have plenty of flavor options and some are unique like Rhubarb, chocolate orange peel and espresso anise. I was in the mood for mocha chip and also grabbed a scoop of cherry vanilla. The cherries were enormous and I found myself wishing I had just gotten the cherry vanilla... soooooo good! Natural, in season ingredients whenever possible is my understanding. And now they have yummy baked goods. Wow!! My family and I stayed in a nearby Airbnb and the kiddos wanted the ice cream we had long promised them. We stopped here and were absolutely amazed at the quality! They have both an outside ordering window and an inside ordering setup. The inside is decorated in a quaint, typical retro ice cream shop style. When I asked about their sorbet options, I was kindly told that they had made both a raspberry and lemon sorbet that day. Obviously, I needed to try both!! Excellent ice cream. I had the grape nuts and ginger flavors. I've never seen a grape nuts flavor at any other location and it's really a genius flavor. Strong grape nuts flavor, it really works -- maybe my favorite way of eating grape nuts honestly? If you have ever eaten grape nuts, this ice cream will be a nostalgic reminder. The ginger is a solidly good version of this more-common ice cream, and follows the pattern of making use of candied ginger as a primary source of the ginger flavor. The pieces of ginger are fresh and crunch enough that I suspect they may make the candied ginger in-house. Unlike some ginger ice cream flavors, this one does not rely on powdered ginger for the primary flavor which often results in a muddy flavor. I also took a few additional tastes of other flavors. Was saddened to discover they were out of blueberry as I'd heard that was a very good flavor. They did have peach which was good. The pieces of peach tasted incredibly fresh. Unfortunately I made the mistake of tasting it immediately after the ginger ice cream so could barely taste the peach. Word to the wise, if you go for the ginger ice cream, eat it after every other flavor. When I got there, the peaches were from a local orchard but was told later on that summer the peaches would be coming directly from I think the store owner's tree. Based on how good the flavors were and on various discussions, I suspect the ingredients they use are all very high quality. Even then, the prices are on par with what you'd expect to pay at an ice cream parlour. They don't charge a premium price for their ice cream. I got my ice cream in a cup so can't speak to the quality of the waffle cones but my son seemed to enjoy them. They either don't make them fresh or they're not made in-house as the place didn't smell of waffle cones. But at an ice cream shop I'd rather they focus on the quality of the ice cream than the cones, and that's definitely true here. Another great thing about them is that they are open year round and they have online ordering! John's has become a staple on my family's Maine trips every time, even the day after Christmas! They are open year round. You can go inside, and in the summer the window is open to order outside. After a trip back from Augusta today (with the sleeping 1 year old in the car) we took an opportunity to have a mini ice cream date. Well worth it! If you love chocolate, I recommend the Coconut Chocolate Almond ice cream. This is my favorite! The only downside is that they only accept cash, and checks. So make sure you come with spending cash. Great choices of flavors, get the chocolate and orange peel, with it's slight frozen and soft candied orange bits. Lemon custard has one of the most refreshing lemon flavors and sweetness in a dessert I've had. The lemon flavor is zesty, bright, and a real great natural lemon sweetness. The homemade pistachio is unreal, it is unlike any pistachio ice cream I have ever had, it really makes me rethink how that flavor is supposed to taste. Prices are real reasonable. Good service too and you can get a sampling taste of anything as well. This guy really knows what he is doing.
