This is a lovely, well-preserved Italianate Victorian home in downtown Chico which was donated to…read morebe preserved as a museum. Chico is lucky to have such a place as this, in addition to the very historic (and much larger) Bidwell Mansion. Unlike Bidwell, this is not a particularly important historic place in of itself, but simply a very nice, sizeable house of a local physician. There are many such houses in many towns and cities throughout California, but this is unusual because it has been preserved in basically original condition with only some small alterations which the family made made over the years, and because it is no longer a private home but open to the public. It was built by a physician and his wife who were not especially wealthy, but who were prominent locals at the time and who had inherited some money which they used to build a very nice house. One gets to see how they lived, and both how they were able to build a very nice house with modern amenities for the time, as well as how they were able to cut costs while still making the house look lavish. It includes the original stove, plus a newer stove added much later, the original wallpaper, furniture, lovely home-made blanket, and more. They also found pieces of some of the old wallpaper from the building which were left over and still in original condition, showing how the paper on the walls has changed colour over time due to fading and smoke. The house even includes a book with information on the items in the house which Mrs. Stansbury kept. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to see how people lived in such houses in the past, has many original items, furniture, and other family belongings. It includes Dr. Stansbury's medical office and medical equipment, also interesting. One can visit it on the weekends with a guided tour. The docent we had showed us every part of the house and we were the only ones there at the time. She provided a lot of information about the house and the history of the family. We spent about an hour there. It is definitely a local treasure and well worth a look.

I helped to 2nd shoot a wedding here and honestly, it's hard to walk 2 steps and not see a great shot opportunity. Stanford oaks doubles a vineyard - which makes for beautiful couple pictures when paired with a sunset in the background. =) You can have both your ceremony and reception here without a lot of hassle. Parking is simple and they do have a large area. The only down about the parking lot is that it is not paved. The Bridal Room is small, intimate and cozy. I think you can fit a max of 10 people in here. There's a bed, mirror and little cute and vintage decor all over. The light isn't great in here - so I'd recommend bringing extra lights! The cool thing about this room is that it leads right out to the ceremony site!! So our bride got to peek out of the window to see the groom walk down as she was awaiting her turn. =) The ceremony area is outdoors -- shrouded in greenery... green all over!!! =) You don't need flowers... it's just so beautiful. Makes for a lot of great "behind the bushes" shots. The reception area is outdoors as well - and again.. lots of greens. The ground is dirt ground (unpaved). Overall a very open and generous area. I'd highly recommend photographers bringing extra extra lights because when it gets dark.. you can't see a thing and your AF really slows down. Staff is very friendly and down to earth. The bride + groom had a simple buffet line and for dessert - tubs of ice cream and homemade pie. =) Ah.. the joys of a simple yet beautiful wedding..

Although the retreat center is closed for a few months during summer, when I contacted Dulcy, the…read moreowner, about arranging a retreat for myself, she instantly sent to work trying to accommodate me. This was the first sign that I was in for a special treat. As we drove down into the canyon I automatically felt at ease, not only with Dulcy, but with the location as well. Dulcy was right when she said the canyon is a great place for rejuvenation and reclaiming one's life. The location couldn't be more spectacular. The retreat center is surrounded by the walls of the canyon that jut up all around. The seclusion not only removes you from all the hustle and bustle of daily life but it allows for you to be at one with nature. During my stay there, I loved watching the hummingbirds and finches visit the various feeders as well as the bird bath. That in and of itself was a calming experience. The creek is also within walking distance and can be accessed at various points along the trail. Dulcy and her team have worked hard to create multiple spaces for rest and relaxation along the creek where visitors can sit and take in their surroundings. When I first arrived she made sure she took me on a guided tour to familiarize me with the trail and creek. Dulcy is an excellent hostess and my time at the retreat center exceeded my expectations. Her love for the canyon, it's wildlife, and her desire to share it with others really shines through. Thank you Dulcy for such a special experience. I can't wait to come back again!

It's a big grassy field with a set up stage toward the front. It was great for the Ani D. atmosphere. But I can't imagine seeing another genre of music here. It had a really nice hippie/chill vibe going on. A bunch of local vendors came and set up shop and were selling food here. I'm not sure if other artists have the same sort of turnout, but if they did, it's definitely a selling point. I didn't venture to try the row of portapotties because it was a little too scary. In the end, I'd go to another show here. It'd be nice to have some sort of festival here, it seems to have that ambiance.
