It was issues from the time I signed the documents for them to handle the services. I requested to meet them at the funeral home to see my brother once he was picked up from the county morgue and they declined but offered to send me a picture of him. Who does that? They sent me a photo of my brother laying in a body bag with blood all over his face and his chest stitched from the autopsy. Really? How insensitive! Fast forward to the viewing day which was before the funeral. I show up that morning to view the body so that I could approve the viewing. When I saw my brother, he looked like someone that I had never met. I had to request a makeup artist get there immediately to make him look like himself. The service was beautiful and then we had him cremated. I called for weeks to check on his cremains and no one called me back. Eventually I found the cell number of one of the employees named George who was heaven sent. I left him a message on Feb10th, and he called me right back. He told me that my brothers cremains were ready for pick up. It had been three weeks. I picked up a portion of his cremains and shared that my brother's wife would come by for the other portion. She has called many times and as of today, they have not given her anything. Fast forward to March, keep in mind my brother passed January 12th. I had been calling Corbin Colonial for weeks now to request the two death certificates that I paid for and again, I can't get anyone to return my calls. I called the medical examiner office on April 1st. Now if you are familiar with Chicago, they are dealing with triple the numbers of deaths then any funeral home in Chicago. The next day, I received a call back from the medical examiner office explaining that the death details were sent to Corbin Colonial on April 2nd and I would have to reach out directly to them for the death certificate. It is now April 16th and I have called at least 12 times and still no return call. No death certificates and no cremains for his wife. Channel 7 News and my Lawyer will be my next calls.

In the middle of making my dad's funeral arrangements. My baby sister was in a physical altercation with an employee of Smith and Thomas Funeral Home. No staff members apologized to the family or even attempted to remove the violent employee from the premises. I sadly was in the middle of the physical altercation and I am currently 5 months pregnant. 2.) While making our funeral arrangements the next day. The owner Mary Smith was micromanaging every step of planning process. There was constant calls and she kept demanding to have our life insurance policy brought to her. I believe these matters could have and should have been handle once we left the office. 3.) My father was not dressed in the appropriate attire that I picked out and informed the funeral director of my selection. When I asked a staff member why is my dad dressed that way. They informed me "Oh I don't know, Ms. Smith instructed me, oh there is nothing I can do". My siblings and I were faced with complete disrespect and disregard. It wasn't until I threaded to make a formal complaint that my wishes were taken seriously. 4.) During my father's visitation the owner Mary Smith, verbally attacked me. 5.) At my dad's funeral that same employee Eunice Young who attacked my sister was apart of his funeral service. Mary Smith and her staff had no regard for the disrespect and violence me and my siblings endured. Losing a loved one is a difficult time. Losing a parent is a very hard pill to swallow. A company such as Smith and Thomas Funeral Home who has been in business this long. Should have been more professionally and more respectable. Due to my siblings really wanting to use their services that is the ONLY reason we went with them. Sadly, my father Eric Smith was the vice president of Smith and Thomas Funeral Home. He worked there for 26 years. This establishment found every way possible to constantly disrespect and disregard his children. I highly advise NO ONE to use their services. Great levels of hospitality and it is a warm, inviting environment. What I do recommend that I think is the major issue here is that if you know that the person has a large family please carpool over here because parking is limited and I had to see people park half a mile away or across the street to make their way into the funeral home.

First, the space is modern, bright and elegant--not at all stuffy and dark like some funeral homes. With only one salon, the whole place is dedicated to one family. The ample parking turned out to be essential. But it was really the attentive, compassionate service from Michael and his team that made everything so easy. Because of them, our sadness was not compounded by stress or frustration. They helped us display photos, collect cards, greet visitors and just enjoy the company of our friends and family. At no turn did anyone decline our requests or try to upsell us on anything; honestly, I was able to forget that The Elms is a business at all. Within a week afterward, Michael gave us digital copies of the guest book (sorted alphabetically) and a digital photo of every card that came with a flower arrangement, making it easy for us to thank everyone who had expressed condolences. Michael R. was our Director and his professionalism and knowledge left my family at ease that everything would go smoothly. He was at our beck and call and helped us with decisions we didn't know we had to make, and I am forever grateful to him for this. Karen C. was present on the day of the funeral, in addition to Michael and besides her caring nature, she provided services that made us extremely happy (mom's make up). I cannot say enough good things about The Elms and will continue to give them our family business. During the most difficult time of my life, The Elms staff was by our side and again, we are beyond grateful that they made this experience one mom would have been proud of. I don't care to "shop around a dozen funeral homes" in the City and Suburbs, or how many funeral homes someone owns. I know where my family and I will continue to patronize.
