This is a real hidden gem of a trail run! Located off the far end of Higuera street, this large open space will have your thinking that you are far off in the country, not just a mile south of San Luis Obispo. The views are absolutely stunning with rolling hills and oak trees in every direction. I often find myself stopping mid-run to snap a pic of the unbelievable scenery. If you decide to do the entire loop of the Johnson Ranch Trail, it is just under 4 miles with only a few mild inclines. I find it to be a perfect mix of slight uphill and flat land. It is a great challenge if you are like me and get bored running on flat land all the time. However, due to the lack of major uphills, this trail is popular with mountain bikers, especially on the weekends. Make sure to turn down your music if you are running so you can hear them coming and move out of the way. The best time to visit this trail is a day after it rains, when the mud is dried back to dirt and the hills turn into a stunning green. I would also aim to visit on cold or foggy SLO day because there is practically no shade. This trail is one of my all time favorite trail runs. I highly recommend it!

Fun spot. Went with a 1yo in a Bob stroller and was doable. Bit tricky over the rocks in some spots but not bad.

This is a really beautiful trail you can complete in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on how much you stop for photos or to rest etc. the views are really spectacular and so are the photo opportunities. The trail is up and down and you should have some decent comfy and decent hiking boots/shoes. Given the recent rain, the hike is very green with lots of wild flowers along the way. A suitable trail for kids 10 years+ old but a bit on the long side for there attention span (according to my daughter!). There were some mountain bikers using the trails as well. Overall a very positive experience and worth taking if you love the outdoors and hiking trails!

    Beautiful place to hike.

I LOVE open space preserves and Johnson Ranch is no exception. I like getting my fitness on with like-minded folks who are out enjoying nature...and sweating! Nothing better than the coastal hills of California - so beautiful! Pick your activity: Hiking Mountain biking Running Dog walking (on leash) JRT is great for all - and it's close to town. 5 stars.

There are a few of these on the trail.

OMG why did I wait so long to come here? It's so wonderful. I did the longer trail and got 3.36 miles on the gps. If you come to any forks, stay to the right for the longer trail. It's about 1 mile less for the shorted trail. I saw many bikers too but make sure you have a mountain bike, helmet and some experience - it's pretty rocky and narrow at many points! Great for trail running...it's hilly but no HUGE hills to climb. This place gets busy on the weekends. Most of the trail is exposed to the sun too so keep that in mind when dressing.

Great family hike! I especially liked the flexibility of distance between 2.3 and 4.6 miles (you can take the yellow or orange path or do both). The green rolling hills were breathtaking!

Excellent running trail! The long trail is only about 3.3 miles or so, but the hills make it a bit more of a challenge. The trail is well maintained (with a number of bridges for creek-crossings and well-trimmed trees creating a sort of natural looking alcove in the shady sections), and provides some beautiful views of SLO's rolling landscapes.

Great trail, you are going around some mountains so there are some slight hills to go up. Overall not too difficult but I would definitely bring some water because it can get hot up on the hills. This trail can be extended or shortened depending on the path that you choose on a few of the forks you come across on the trails. This trail also allows dogs but they must be kept on a leash.

    An inviting path to run...

My journey with…read morethem started over 10 years ago when I was looking for a place to service my Rad Rover e-bike. I first took it to CBO (it was downhill from my house) but they stuck their noses up in the air--they were not going to work on a silly ebike! I rode over to Foothill, and talked with the staff there about what I wanted to do, and they were happy to help me. About $1000 later my Rad was super Rad, and Foothill had a customer for life. Since then I have literally spent THOUSANDS of dollars there--purchased 4 bikes (so far) from them and a whole slew of accessories--all because Josh and the staff were willing to talk to an e-bike kook. No matter how crazy an idea I have for my bikes, the gang there will listen, weigh out the pros and cons of my decision (many times saving me from myself), and then execute! So if you are looking for a new bike, or need your old bike serviced, look no further than Foothill Cyclery!

My girlfriend did NOT want me getting back on a bike, but I insisted Walley had the perfect answer for my safety concerns. He recommended I get Electric Recumbent Trike, Cattrike, that would afford me the opportunity to get around town with equal effort. The harder you ride, the more the engine kicks in to get you up to speed. What I find most fascinating about my E-Trike is how much more often I'd hop on it versus grabbing my car keys. My goal whenever I ride is "To Be Seen." I have flashing lights and a bluetooth speaker that announces my presence whenever I'm out on all our fabulous trails in SLO county. Whether you're someone who wants to competitively ride or someone like myself that enjoys simply being out in the sunshine, Walley, with his experience and inventory can get you well on your way. When I first purchased my Cattrike 559 Walley helped my a ton on the price, not only was it affordable for my budget, but he let me make the last payment after a week of riding. I was blown away he first trusts someone and affords them the opportunity to show the goodness in the bike riding community. Walley has hosted, sponsored, and contributed to special event fundraisers and downtown events by donating goods and services. Whenever there's a parade or special function downtown, you'll see Walley and his kiosk of bikes there to help and volunteer. Walley's Bicycle Works includes these services: Bike/E-Bike/Trike and helmet Rentals Help plan and coordinate your ride Bikes at all levels/budget for sale Purchase Equipment, parts and clothing Sponsors Events help you organize your event Hosts kids ride a long parties for parents Full service repair shop for all your needs You can inquire about buy-backs and trade-ins on bikes Save yourself the headache of trying to order the right bike to meet your needs and let Wally's Bicycle Works show you the options available in the bike world. Wally prides himself on a hands-on approach to bicycle sales that promises you that the bike you choose is truly something that will keep you on the road for years. I often stop by his shop just to talk about life and share stories about the things going on around town. Wally is at the shop Monday through Saturday 11am-5pm with his brother there to help get you on your way! Overall Grade: A+
