I want to begin that this review is mainly around the customer service in setting up an appt, and not an actual appointment. But I felt it was worth sharing still. In the midst of renovating our home, we needed to have a piano moved so that we could refinish our floors. We were told this at the last minute. We called Johnson's movers and they were quite flexible with the date. We first told them we needed them on a Tuesday. Then the contractor called us, and we said we needed them for a Wed. We called Johnson back and they said they could do it. Unfortunately, the contractor called again and said the new date was Thursday - which was a date the company could not do. I wanted to find a way to recognize their incredible customer service in trying to meet our needs, and thus I'm sending this review. If we needed a mover we would use them instantly! read more

Johnsons moved my Steinway S from NYC to MD last week. The 3 movers were polite and efficient and knew what they were doing. They dropped off the piano that evening in MD without a hitch and the piano sounded as good as it did before they picked it up. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because there was confusion getting the insurance documents to the building in time and we had to hold the movers for several hours waiting for insurance documents to arrive to the building manager. I have used this company to move my grand piano several times bow. They are always great. They are very efficient and careful with the piano and my living space. I used them most recently this week for a local move. I had to change the drop off time last minute due to an emergency. Ted (the guy who coordinated the move) worked with me to accommodate my emergency and make sure my piano was delivered. He was very understanding if the situation and did not create an issue out of the change which I appreciated. The movers were friendly and awesome. One of the movers, Raymond, actually moved my piano 2 years ago and on both occasions was incredibly friendly. Johnson's Piano Moving delivered a ~ 600 lb Kawai upright to my fourth-floor walk-up apartment in DC with just a four-person crew. I had previously tried to get the piano delivered using the company for which the piano dealer offered free delivery. However, that company showed up totally unprepared for stairs (first question was "where's the elevator?"), and told me the only way to get it delivered would be via my balcony and a crane, to the tune of $1,500! So I called up Johnson's Piano Moving, and just four days later, their crew showed up at my building and CRUSHED the grueling move in less than one hour. Luckily, they have a good relationship with my piano dealer and the latter was willing to split their fee with me. Johnson's was super professional, friendly, and reasonably priced given the exceptional difficulty of the move. I used Johnson's Piano movers recently to move my grandmother's cherished upright piano -- not much dollar value but a whole lot of heart. They totally get it. Ted responded quickly -- I had to move the piano from its location to my house within three days (moving/closing logistics), and when my husband unexpectedly got covid, they had an option to store the piano at a very reasonable rate until the house was covid-free. The movers themselves were pros, fitting it into the space I wanted with care and consideration, showing up when they said they would, and polite and gentlemanly throughout. I needed to replace the piano bench, and Ted had his warehouseman, Sule, find a great match at a phenomenal price and gave me the option of picking it up myself. I can't say enough how impressed I was with the job that these guys did. They were courteous, professional and incredibly careful and skilled at their job. We needed to move a grand piano over 500 miles and they did such a great job packing it up and loading it into the truck, we were able to drive it with no worries. The piano did not move an inch in transit and when it was unloaded and assembled at the destination it was not only in perfect condition, but it was still in tune. Absolutely professional service in DC metro area. Highly recommended! When they say they could accommodate short notice moving schedule, they mean it. I only gave them the notice two days ahead and they did squeeze me into their busy schedule. How nice! Compared to other movers, they charge you very reasonable price for it. Just FYI, they do have additional fees for stairs and sharp turn. But even with that extra charge, it's still cheaper than a lot of others. Call and ask for quote with a clear price break-down, they will give you a very satisfactory service. Suggestion: the more detail you provide (type of piano, pickup&dropoff locations, whether having stairs and etc.), the more accurate quote you will get. read more

Johnson's did a great job moving my upright. The piano was wrapped and securely attached to the side of the van (not all regular moving companies do that). The three men safely got the piano up a narrow staircase and around a VERY tight corner without damaging the walls, floors, or piano. I was a little concerned when the piano was coming up because the wheels banged the stairs a couple of times, but everything was fine. The price was a little higher than other places I called, but I imagine that's because of the high standard of service. They were also available on short notice, which was a bonus. They scraped the cabinet of my upright piano last September. When I complained I got excuses, denials and derision of a family heirloom. The piano should have been wrapped but instead they tossed a blanket over top which was probably more of a distraction than anything. Lesson learned: the customer needs to know what is required to be sure they do it right. The mover also offered to take my other piano to the dump - a ridiculous suggestion which shows a bad attitude about the customer's property. read more

The price seemed very fair and Ken was able to accommodate a very small delivery window (I have young kids and only had two hours of availability that day). We are very happy with Johnson's Piano Moving. It was really hard for us to find someone that would accept to move our upright piano in a spiral stairs with 3 very sharp turns, but those guys did it, and in a very professional way. They did it pretty quickly (in 40 minutes), without any damage. And they came 2 days after we asked for their estimate. I can tell it is hard to find good piano movers. The first company we hired, just left the piano downstair in the hallway of our building because "it was too heavy for them". What a shame! read more

I had my mother's beloved Steinway piano moved by this company to a storage unit from my parent's house. I suggested that they move the piano down some front stairs and out a double door and across 20' on a walkway to the truck. Instead, without asking me the mover backed the truck up to the back of the house where there were some narrow concrete steps to the second floor. For this, the piano needed to go out a back door with a very tight 90 degree turn to the narrow steps with an iron railing. Presumably the mover did this so the piano could be loaded directly into the truck rather than having to carry it a little further if it went out the double doors. It was only one man and his son. When I asked if this was a good idea the mover didn't say much and kept going. When the long distance movers came to the storage unit to pack and move the piano along with other household items to another state they showed me the damage that had been caused by the improper way the piano was moved and literally dumped into storage. There were very large scrapes where the black lacquer was scraped off the side, deep impression marks where the piano obviously hadn't made the tight turn and the damage where it had been pushed into the storage unit. It hadn't been placed on a piano board and nothing had been done to block the inside despite my asking if I needed to do anything else to properly store the piano. The long distance movers couldn't even find some of the pieces that had just been stuck inside the piano. I now have to find a company to repair and refinish the damaged areas, if this is even possible. No idea of what damage there is to the inside although the movers said a piano should not stay on its side for any time without being blocked. A very painful and costly mistake that I feel sick over. May have to send it to Steinway to get it back to where it was. My mistake was to be uninformed as to what to do properly and to rely on a company that I thought had this expertise to move the piano and to give me the information I needed. read more

I couldn't have been happier with the move of my grand from a storage unit in Tyson's to my house in Arlington. It included the extra task of uncrating the piano at the storage unit. They handled the piano with care, clearly knew what they were doing (which I haven't always experienced in previous moves), came on short notice (the morning before the recent big snow storm) and the price was reasonable. They were also courteous and even uncomplainingly pitched in to help clear some boxes which were blocking access to the piano in the unit. I also appreciated their promise in advance to repair any damage they might cause to the piano. Just FYI, they didn't take away the packing materials, like most movers would, in my experience.
