I have 2 giant Crepe Myrtles in my front yard that really needed heavy pruning. I found this company on Yelp and texted asking if he did that work and when I could get an estimate. We had moved in a few months prior and the previous owners let the backyard trees grow a bit too big, they were too much to handle and even damaging the fence. Russel was very responsive, came out to our place for a quote and it was reasonable. We opted in having 5 big Oleanders removed. He did the job in a bit over 6 hours (by himself! I would recommend Russel to anyone that needed tree service of any kind. His prices are fair and he personally gets out to do the work. I have an appreciation for an owner that will get dirty. I had him remove a large cherry blossom tree from my front yard and grind the stump/surface roots. Afterwards when I went to remove and lay new sod we found more large roots. FANTASTIC customer service that exceeded my expectations! I haven't even hired Russell yet, and I wanted to "yell from the rooftops" just how impressed I was with his knowledge and help. He showed up right on time, too. We're in escrow, and Russell came by (he said he was headed out our direction anyway) to take a look ... he spent 30 minutes, gave me pros and cons, wrote up an estimate, told me where I could save money (not everything was about hiring him) and even let me video the conversation so I would remember what he said about each tree! PROS prior to the work: -quick to reply to my calls. -I really liked the clarity of his bid and it's detailed written manner (other's only gave verbal bids)...So very Important it is written. -plus he gave me four important pieces of paper documenting his: workers comp., Liability  Ins., Mech. Lien, and 3day right of refusal. -His quick and timely reply via e-mail -His early arrival for the bid (good for me, maybe not others-- "better early than late"-- being late is not a good reflection on one's character) THANK YOU...Russell has been the most professional contractor with whom I have dealt with in years. HIS WORK: He and one worker were here for 3+ hours, 450usd was the bid (I paid 470 I was so impressed).. He did it himself, diligently and methodical-- not an unleashed unsupervised gang of 6+ as happened to me with Bailey's Tree Service in 2010. He massively pruned a severely overgrown 26 yr. plum, 45 yr. old bay laurel, and 40 yr. old privet that had been let run wild for years. I want to update my review to highlight another reason why I'll be recommending Russell's service to everyone I know -- thoroughness. I didn't fully anticipate how unruly and pervasive the mulberry roots were going to be. Even though Russell and his crew had worked for HOURS to grind down the stump and the biggest roots on the day of the tree removal, we found more roots, including some that were buried away from the main stem, and which were as thick as an average-sized tree trunk. Not surprising - it was a 50-60 year old tree, and quite a bit of it was buried just below grade, or buried by the massive amount of shavings from the stump and root grinding. Despite a very full and busy schedule, Russell came back twice to help me clean out all of the roots that could be in the way of a new tree -- he refused to leave the job undone. Speaking of new tree -- I also asked Russell to help me select and plant a new maple tree in the same spot. We discussed a few times, and settled on the Autumn Blaze. On a nice day in late Fall, he came back with a beautifully-shaped specimen, and helped me position it appropriately (taking into account the location of my house in relation to the tree, as well as the sun's movement and direction). I have great peace of mind knowing that Russell planted my new tree, and that he will be taking care of the trees on my property every year. read more

My husband and I called Johnston's Tree Service for a quote to remove a very large Chinese Tallow in our front yard that had damaged our walkway, and was frankly just a pain all year round. We received quotes from a couple different companies - Johnston's price was competitive and after talking to Russell we decided he also seemed the most knowledgeable. They provided a copy of their insurance with the quote, and Russell explained the process of tree removal and stump grinding, then answered a bunch of my questions and addressed my concerns. My parent's house has several aging and overgrown trees on their property. Dead limbs, damaging roots, irregular growth and overpowering Mistletoe had, over time, changed once beautiful trees into neighborhood eyesores. Recently my mom noticed a man trimming a neighbor's trees across the street. She was impressed by his work and had my dad inquire about getting an estimate. He came over to assess the trees and work involved, and came up with a very reasonable price that was better than other estimates my parents had gotten in the past. Just like everyone said - he's the best! I got a quote from three different places and his was by FAR the lowest. Sometimes being the cheapest can be a scary and un nerving thing.. But not with with guy and his crew!! My huge gangly tree was tangled up in a bunch of power lines and half of it had been cut down by the previous owner but decided to leave the scary wire tangled side uncut. I went to work and by the time I got home it was all done. I never even saw the guy! He was even trusting enough to bill me afterwards and leave the bill at my door step. No mishaps with slicing through wires - which was my main concern. This crew is the best. If I had more trees on my property - he'd be the guy I'd call for help. read more

Mr. Johnston cancelled our agreed to service when two days before he was to cut down our trees he sent me an e-mail in response to four questions that I had asked, including: what time he would show up on Friday and would he postpone his work if it rained? He cited in his rude response that he was cancelling because he didn't do work in my city, even though a month earlier he had come to our house to review the work to be done. He accused my wife of lying and said I asked too many questions (4) when I asked if he used subcontractors, based upon a State document that he had sent me encouraging payments be made to both the contractor and subcontractor to prevent a lien being placed upon my house at a later date. His behavior and un-necessarily rude responses are a HUGE RED FLAG to me, and should be for you as well. Why would anyone put themselves in a position where they could be financially liable because they didn't get the right answers? Certainly not me. read more
