Wow I can't recommend Russell and Johnstons Tree Removal Service enough!! After reading the reviews here on Yelp I decided to have Russell come out and give me a quote. I had a 30 foot tree that was pushing my fence into the street. It had already split the boards and I needed to have it removed immediately. Russell was the third company I had come out and give me a quote. He was able to come out that very same day and look at my tree. His quote was 1/2 what the other 2 companies had said it would be and I was given an appointment time instead of a four-hour window which the other two companies had scheduled. My time is very valuable so that was a huge plus to me. I obviously decided to go with Russell and his company. He was here the very next day and on time. It was just him, I was surprised that he did not have a crew at this time. But within an hour and a half my huge tree was removed down to the bare stump! He was super fast and didn't leave any mess behind. I was so impressed by the work he did. I couldn't believe that he was able to do that whole tree by himself in such a short time period. I would highly recommend him for any job you have. He was extremely knowledgeable and is great at what he does. Not to mention super friendly and a very nice guy. Based on the reviews here, I called Johnston's Tree Service to get an estimate for a stump removal and tree trimming and I'm so glad I did. I called early Monday a.m. and Russell met me at my home later that afternoon. He was on time, checked out the two small projects I had, and gave me a very reasonable estimate along with his proof of insurance, etc. He showed up on time for the Saturday afternoon project and had the work done in under an hour. All the debris and tree branches were cleared away and the area looked better than before he had started working. I read the only (until this one) review on Yelp and it sounded promising enough for me to give Johnston's Tree Service a call for an estimate. I'm very glad I did! Russell Johnston, the owner and sole employee, responded promptly and was able to come by my house the same day to give me an estimate for trimming a few trees (Nectarine, Camphor, and Eucalyptus) and my very overgrown Oleander bushes. He was professional and provided his Contractor's License number and a copy of his Certificate of Insurance without being asked first. I got two estimates from other licensed/bonded tree service companies and although I would have been comfortable choosing one of them, Russell's estimate was a bit less expensive. I think being the sole employee and getting the bulk of his jobs through word-of-mouth, thus not having to advertise, allow him to be very competitive with his pricing. Russell really did an excellent job and hauled away all the debris in not only my yard, but my neighbors' as well (even the ones behind my house on the next block over). What I liked about Johnston's Tree Service and its owner, Russell Johnston: * He was professional and had a nice, easygoing personality that made me trust him and feel comfortable about having him do the work. * He was prompt about returning my phone calls (whereas one company I called twice to get an estimate never called me back). * He showed up at my house at the dates/times he said he would. * He proactively contacted my neighbors before he started the work to ask whether he could access their yards to clean up any debris that fell into them. * He was very accommodating in cutting down and removing a small tree (~4-5 inches in diameter and about 25' high) that I forgot to include in the original estimate and he didn't charge me extra for it (although I gave him a few extra dollars at the end that hopefully covered it anyway!). * He did a very thorough job cleaning up the debris. * Considering he was the sole worker, I thought he finished the work pretty quickly (i.e., in two days). * He did a great job in trimming my trees/bushes. I want to update my review to include another excellent pruning job by Johnston's Tree Service. Last week, Russell and his team reduced our flowering pear tree in size by 30%. In addition, they reduced a mock orange shrub by about 5 feet and pruned the sides for health/shape so it is much more manageable now! We also had a photinia shrub reduced in height by about 5 feet. I was able to call Russell Johnston on a Sunday morning after a huge branch fell from a tree in my yard and others looked precarious. Despite it being Sunday he was willing to come if it was an emergency but I told him I thought it could wait. He was perfectly willing to come the next day as well but I couldn't get off work. So he came first thing Tuesday at my convenience, assessed the matter and gave me an extremely reasonable estimate. He is pleasant, easy going and yet completely professional. The work was done beautifully with outstanding clean up. I've had tree work done in the past and was expecting to pay twice what was charged. When we bought our house 10 years ago, there were several redwoods and cypress trees that we knew would have to come out someday. Well, we decided that somday had finally arrived. After meeting with several companies and getting bids, we chose to go with Johnston's Tree Service. Not only did Russel come in with a very competitive bid, but he took the time to listen and answer all of my questions. He definitely knows his trees. While several other companies have multiple crews so you don't know who will be doing the work, Russel is a small family owned business and he is the one doing the bids and on-site with his crew. Just two of them came in and easily took out 7 trees ranging from 20-40+ feet and did a great job not damaging anything in somewhat tight quarters and cleaning up afterward. I would definitely recommend using him again, should I have any future needs. We are very satisfied with the job done! My only question is this: "Why doesn't he have more YELP reviews?" To be honest, due to the limited reviews and lack of any current ones, I almost didn't make the call. But once I talked with him on the phone and met him, I'm glad I did. Super nice guy. read more

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers. I contacted 3 companies for quotes for removing a pine tree that I really did not like. The first company came out and the person was professional and knowledgeable. One of the pluses to that company is that they will plant a new tree of your choice (15 gallon) as part of the quote. Unfortunately I am preparing to re-landscape and would not be able to have a tree planted right away. The second company was Johnston's Tree Service. Russell arrived early and we discussed what I wanted to have him do. We talked about what trees might be best to plant when I was finished landscaping. He also was knowledgeable and professional and he offered a short list of trees I could plant that would fit the somewhat small yard. While discussing the work (remove the pine tree and an old stump in the back yard, including grinding the stumps) I mentioned that I would have to remove another tree in the future because it was growing into my power lines. He offered to add that to his quote so I said yes. His quote with the extra tree was $100 less than the first company. I was going to wait for the last company, but later that day decided to go with Johnston's and canceled the last contractor. We set a date to have the trees removed, but the weather interfered. What impressed me was that Russell called to let me know he wasn't going to be able to do the work and we rescheduled. A day or two before that appointment we had a storm come through and he had to do rush work for his other clients. He called, explained what was happening, was apologetic and we rescheduled again. Today he arrived on time with a worker to remove the trees. He was thorough and systematic and got all of the work finished in 3 hours. He cleaned everything up before he left. Russell came out today for myself and my neighbor who works. He spent a lot of time with me explaining how to take care of my trees after he told me I didn't need him to do any work! For my neighbor he said there were three trees that needed to be removed but that we didn't need to have a certified arborist to do that job. And that we could get someone else much more cheaply just for tree removal. And he gave us the advice to call Sacramento tree foundation for free trees that would provide appropriate shade and be good in terms of water conservation. I liked this man very much and appreciated the amount of time he spent considering especially that he wasn't going to make any money from either of us. I highly recommend him. I chose him for our first estimate based on how many reviews he hadand the quality of the reviews. May I suggest that if you have a tradesman do work for you and you like it, right a good review. I would highly recommend Russell for any of your tree trimming and/or removal needs. We had two large trees in our front yard and we knew one ideally needed to be removed and the other could be trimmed or removed. We were waiting to have services done because we were expecting a little extra money at the end of the month. In the meantime, the one that needed to be removed lost two large branches which fell right onto our sidewalk and luckily didn't fall on anyone. I called Russell and although he didn't have any openings for a few weeks, he offered to work on a Sunday to help us out. We were ecstatic and very grateful that he would be willing to do that. Even better, he called us that Thursday because he had a cancelation on Friday and he ended up coming out two days earlier on Friday instead. He and his brother came out Friday morning as promised and were done in a few short hours. They even removed an old stump while they were out, for no additional cost. And to add to it all, the cost he charged us to do all this was almost half of what another company gave us an estimate for. I won't hesitate to use Russell and his crew again in the future. They did a great job for me by removing a large dead maple and trimming another maple in my front yard. Even though he was short-handed for the first day's work, he set about taking out the dead tree and was still able to finish in the early afternoon, including a thorough effort in cleaning up. They bucked up all the wood and moved it into my backyard for use as firewood. They came back the next day to trim out dead limbs from the other tree, which required Russell to spend a few hours roping from limb to limb. The stump grinding went quickly and everything was cleaned up in short order. From the initial estimate to the conclusion of work, Russell and his folks showed up when he said they would, were always courteous and went out of their way to keep the work area clean and neat.
