Tinkers is a fantastically ordinary place blessed by proximity to a university campus and mischievous fairy dust that casts a love enchantment on anyone who ever enters. Or maybe its magic is more like a Siren call embedded in "Paradise City" which filters through the bar infinite-minus-one times a night, along with other classic rock radio hits that play on loop. On any given night, bar occupants will dependably belt out the lyrics to this song in particular at least once. (This alcoholic ritual is the closest Fordham gets to school spirit) Inside visitors find (and regulars take for granted) a locus of fun, tragedy and ill-advised falling in Like. Tables by the windows house coats or tame Tinkers fans. There's a pool table at the end of the room, and to the left up two steps that can sometimes be fatal is the girls' singular toilet, the definition of grody, which usually has no toilet paper but at least two girls hoping to shorten the wait by going in at the same time. It is a relatively large space, normally saturated on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays by a cross section of the Bronx Fordham populace. Locals stop by, mingle with the student body sometimes. All in all, it's just your typical dive joint a solid trudge away from campus gates. My favorite place to go when I need a drink. I frequent this spot with my homegirl while we wait for our son's at Karate. The food is good. The Bartender Lisa is so BOMB! I love her energy. I must say that the upgrade was a great choice because before it looked like a members only spot where you might have a bar fight or hear racial slurs. Just saying. I would have given 5 stars but one day I needed to pee REALLY Bad and I asked if I could use the bathroom and the manager was looking as though she didn't want me to. Me and three friends went to Jolly Tinker after a visit to the Botanical Gardens. It was a random selection (it was close to the train!) but We felt VERY lucky. There are two sides to this place one a hole in the wall feel restaurant and the other an established bar. The food was awesome!! Great oxtail with peas and rice We also got fish tacos very tasty!! Been here a few times service from the bartenders. Problem is the menu is all over the place nothing cohesive. The owner does not come across as friendly checking on her patrons to see how's the service or food. The food is good but as a business misspellings on your menu is a NO. No effort when it comes to the look of the menu it looks like a corner store take out menu. Decor NEEDS AN IMMEDIATE UPDATE. For a Bronx staple business to attract new fresh patrons no effort. My friends and I went up to the Bronx to check out the Botanical Garden and we popped in here for a few drinks afterwards. The atmosphere has changed, and quality of service has changed for the better with it. I primary go there for their "New Restaurant, They serve up an amazing freshly cooked to order, salmon, shrimp, clams on the half shell, the best chicken wings you can eat in this Neighborhood, and more. I live in the neighborhood and saw this place on Uber eats and thought I'll try it. I ordered coconut rice with chicken and EVERY piece of chicken came burnt ! This place is horrible you can legit see the chicken is black yet they sent it out like if was nothing and the rice didn't even come in a container it came in a bag ! Let me put you wise: there is no reason to come here unless you are a local regular, a Fordham student, a Fordham grad feeling particularly nostalgic for those many, many, drunken nights, or an Irish immigrant straying south of Woodlawn. That being said, Tinkers is a Fordham institution, and as such will always hold a very special place in my heart. It will be dirty, there will be an unbearably long bathroom line, questionably attractive couples will be sucking face IN your face, anti-smoking laws will be blatantly ignored, and the crowd will be packed wall to wall with sloppy drunk Fordham kids, especially if it's a weekend after eleven. You may also have to dodge errant pool cues and flying elbows and ping pong balls from the occasional beer pong game. And yet, to many a Fordham student, Tinkers is sheer magic. This can be explained, believe it or not. Compared the famed Arthur Avenue Tri-Bar of MUGZ's, Howl, and Ziggy's, the crowd has less polo shirted preps and no iron-pumping orange guidos or skankily attired hos. It is content to remain an Irish pub in the Bronx, and has no pretensions of being "the club," a fact which its clientele accepts and embraces. If there is dancing, it is not of the sketchy grind-up-on-you variety, but of the delightfully joyful, uninhibited drunken variety. The jukebox is full of classic bar tunes to which the crowd loudly sings along, plus a fine selection of Irish tunes and a disc recorded by the ever-present bouncer. But the reason that Tinkers remains so near and dear to the hearts of so many a Fordhamite is its status as a freshman initiation rite. Having never participated in any variety of underage drinking, I was incredibly nervous about the whole enterprise. I should not have feared: a quick flash of my Fordham ID, I was in and anxiously sipping on a cup of slightly warm beer someone had generously offered me from their $7 pitcher. In and out and under a half an hour, it was hardly a great night, but it was the start of something big. In the three semesters that followed, I made many a sober trip to Tinkers (!! I know), enjoying it just because it was college and something to do on the weekend, everyone was a potential new friend, and I could feel superior knowing I wasn't going to embarrass myself with the drunken antics that were on display from so many of my peers. However, there also were occasions when I would partake in cheap Tinkers beer, such as the evening when half my Honors math class went out the night before our 9:30 class. It was college, and such behavior was easy to justify. Or then there was the first time I can ever say I was drunk, during finals first semester on a particularly empty night. While my guy friends used the restroom, a local memorably offered to get me into "The Garden," for free. Even while struggling to adjust to my mind-altered state, I was able to discern that he meant the nearby Botanical Gardens, and not Madison. Somewhere along the line, I too carved my name in the back room wall with the key to Queen's Court, joining the Pantheon of Tinkers lovers for all eternity. The site of many a memorable evening, Tinkers will always be remembered fondly by this Fordham grad, and scores of others. Bonus points: 11 months ago today, Boyfriend asked me to join him for drinks at the Jolly Tinker, and the rest is history. I hardly ever went to The Tinker when I was an undergrad at Fordham back in the early 80s. Most of us went to the old Clarks/RIP on Fordham Road, the El D/3rd Ave/RIP or Cushy Butterfield's across the street on Bedford Park//also RIP. But I've been there MANY times since then, mostly to play darts. or meet up with friends who's former bar hangout on Bainbridge Avenue or 204th Street has also now closed. I feel "old" in there now and generally fit in better with the day crowd. It is ALWAYS hilarious to see the undergrads as amateur drinkers and hanger-outers, but the Tinker has a long history of "looking out" for its' customers...idiot freshman or not! Wow! Just looked up the "Tinkah". I was a graduate student at the New York Botanical Garden in 1976, a nerd from Oregon with no idea of what NYC was like, much less the Bronx where I had to live while I went to school. The Tinker was a place where I could safely learn about how to live in NY and have a great time. The "back room" was a very interesting place even then, often where the overwhelmed could sleep it off. There were almost NO Fordham students there, mostly local Irish toughs, Detectives and Firemen. The few "hippie" students like me who hung out took years to get to know folks enough for them to not pigeonhole us and actually get to like us. Then the fun was on. Buy- backs were a free drink after every third paid drink, whether it was a beer or complex mixed drink. Once a year was "customer appreciation day" where everything you bought was free for 4 hours. The place was jam packed when I was there but the jukebox there was stacked with great hits throughout the decades. There was also a couple tables of Pong in the back room. As a non Fordham Univercity Student i must say this bar had never caught my attention. I would always drive or walk past this bar and wonder who would go there? At a glance on any given day it looks like an old abandon bar, depending on the day however it gets packed. I once decided to try out this bar and see what it was about. At first, the bar tender seemed pretty stuck up and rude but then after 15 minutes of me just stalling for my friends she turned out to be pretty cool. It's a nice small chill place. The drinks are hella cheap ! i bought a pitcher for 7 or 8 bucks ! and there's a pool table in the back which is also pretty cheap to play ($ 1 a game is a bargain compared to manhattan). The music overall was good, great old school 80's and 90's classics. Overall it's a great place to just hang out with friends or kill time. I've been to many bars in new york city. And out of all the bars that I've been in this one definitely is at the bottom of the barrel. I moved into the neighborhood recently and usually I like to hit up the local bars to meet new people and get a feel for the neighborhood. One night I decided to pass by the bar on a late night. There were a good amount of people in there so I began to mingle I bought a pitcher of beer, and tried to have a good time. All of a sudden the jukebox cuts off the lights come on and they began kicking everyone out the bar with no warning. My pitcher was 3 quarters of the way full and I wasn't the only one who still had plenty of beer left. So I decide to fill up my plastic cup of beer because in this bar they serve beer in cups and not glass mugs which I don't understand. So I proceed to walk out with the beer that I paid for because they didn't want to give me my money back after I paid for the beer and was basically forced to get out. As I'm walking the so called bouncer ran up behind me knocked the beer out of my hand and it spilled all over me. What a freaking jerk! I don't like confrontation but I cursed this guy out and I pray he gets find yourself looking for something to do don't come to this crap hole bar. Your better off doing anything else. This bar sucks and they don't do a good job and seem not to care about people who come in other then their regulars.
