One of my favorite walk-to neighborhood restaurants in the Mott Haven section of Downtown Bronx. The atmosphere is always casual, tasteful & of course, photos of different Charlies everywhere. Definitely a good sport for relishing well made cocktails. Recommend the hibiscus mezcal and 5 spice old fashioned. Our mixologist Edwin was wonderful and a great host with his recommendations. The Brussel sprouts were good- nothing to write home about. Didn't taste very Caesary. We ordered two types of wings- buffalo and (I think) Thai chili-ish ones. The latter tasted bomb but both needed to be cooked longer for crispiness. Also not a fan of huge wings. Sidebar- we asked the server/hostess if we could do just flats and were denied... most restaurants would just up-charge but fine... We also ordered fries with the wings. By the time we were pretty much done w the wings, the fries came. I don't think the order was placed tbh. Unfortunately there was no type of comp for that. My friends kept raving about this restaurant with a great brunch. When I joined them for brunch I wasn't disappointed. We ordered brunch & I ordered a Bellini. I was happy that Bellinis were an option, because many restaurant s don't offer the option. The Bellinis were very good. When my food came the fries were crispy, which is my preference and I didn't ask for them to be cooked that way. The steak was delicious. We were seated in the front of the restaurant where the high top tables are. It wasnt until I went to the restroom that I realized the restaurant was bigger than I thought. Came here with my gf on a Sunday for late brunch. We stood awkwardly at the front door not really sure if we were going to be greeted and seated or it was a self seat situation. After a good 5 minutes, we were finally attended to and put in a seat in the back of the restaurant. Placing our order also took a good ten minutes, where I had to wave someone down to eventually place our order in. And then it took another half hour to eventually be served our food. Luckily, the food tastes great. My gf who ordered the Fried Chicken Benny ($19) enjoyed her meal and was stuffed. That sausage gravy is what makes this dish great. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles ($23) which came with good decent sized buttermilk fried chicken with cheddar waffles. Super filling. The staff member was kind enough to give us 20% off on the entire check to make up for the poor service. Needless to say, if you're on a schedule and this restaurant looks busy, I'd look for another restaurant to dine at. read more

The venue is cute and, for a moment, makes you forget you're in the Bronx. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended for me. I'm not sure if there's new ownership or new staff, but my experience this time was deeply disappointing. The BLT--something I've enjoyed here before and was genuinely looking forward to--was awful. The bacon was overcooked and barely there (maybe one strip total). I added chicken, which was oddly served on the side. When I asked why, I was told they didn't want it to "deteriorate." If they meant the bread, that ship had already sailed--the bread was already falling apart. In the past, this sandwich was served on sturdier bread with common sense. That was clearly missing this time. I also ordered a stack of pancakes. They were rubbery and burned. To make matters worse, the most scorched pancake was hidden on the bottom, which felt insulting. Honestly, I don't understand how any self-respecting chef would send out food like that. I'm especially annoyed because I convinced my best friend to come out in snow and rain for what turned out to be subpar food. The only saving grace was Casey (or Kaysey), the bartender--excellent mimosas and genuinely great customer service. I'm still sitting here as I write this, mostly confused and disappointed. Brunch on Sunday! Popped in on a Sunday early afternoon without a reservation. We were immediately seated but I noticed most tables were being held for reservation. On Sundays there's a live jazz band making for a very enjoyable brunch. Our waitress was the same person that seated us. She was playing two roles, and quite well for the entire time I was there! The menu is accessible via QR code. For my meal I went with the shrimp and grits. My BF originally wanted the chicken sandwich until our waitress explained it's no longer as described on the menu. Essentially the brunch chicken sandwich has been replaced with the dinner chicken sandwich. Removing everything described on the brunch version (no egg, coleslaw or aioli). That wasn't appetizing to him so instead he had the pancake stack with 3 eggs scrambled on the side. My shrimp and grits were sooooo good. The grits were full of flavor with pieces of sausage mixed in. His pancakes were on the smaller side but he said they were good. Charlie's is a great restaurant! Before the yelp event I visited Charlie's once before. This place is located on a quiet block in what is now prime gentrification territory. The outside gives old New York warehouse. Very cute and rustic on the exterior and interior. The tables near the front is well lit- the atmosphere gives elevated pub vibes. Towards the back the lighting is very dim and the bathrooms can be better maintained. The food as always is made with care. The folks that work there seem to be very intentional about their jobs and care of customers. The food- is good. My favorite thing on their menu is their burgers. Like with any great spot - there is something for everybody. No matter what diet you follow you can come here and know you will be fed. I haven't been at Charlie's in years, but the last visit was very good. I totally enjoyed the food. Not this time however. I have chicken and waffles. The chicken had absolutely no flavor, as though the chef didn't season it. It was also chewy. The waffles were very heavy. They were not light, fluffy, or palatable. I had to work hard using a knife and fork. The drinks were...drinkable. I had an Amaretto Sour. I would rate a 3.5 out of 10. As for the service, Diamond, our server, was on point! Nice, friendly, accommodating. She waited on us, not like it was her job, but she cared if we needed or wanted anything. The ambiance was cool. I do love that the kitchen is open and very visible. Food makes a BIG difference when dining. If you have a bad waiter you can ignore and or not tip them, but when the food is extremely lacking, ignoring it is impossible since you're spending your money. Sunday 4/26/2025: The food was mediocre and overpriced. The place was very noisy and crowded. The waitresses could have used more help, they were very nice and professional. It was over 40+ yrs I been in this neighborhood which is now surrounded by many restaurants and condominiums not far from the third avenue bridge. The place was at one time called Piano Factory, which till this day it is still called. We waited over an hour to have our food served. They charged an automatic gratuity of 20%. read more

One of the most disappointing dining experiences I've ever had. I used to love this restaurant for its open-kitchen concept--but what I witnessed on my last visit completely destroyed my trust. While my friend and I sat facing the kitchen, we ordered affogato for dessert. The chef mistakenly put the ice cream in a to-go container, and when the waitress corrected him, he shockingly grabbed the scoops with his bare hands, stuffed them into a glass, then licked his fingers and wiped them on a towel--without ever washing his hands. We immediately canceled our order, and the waitress admitted this wasn't the first time there had been a hygiene issue with that chef. Even worse, there was no manager or owner present, and although the waitress promised to share my number with the owner, nobody ever followed up. This was more than a mistake--it was a blatant disregard for food safety and customer care. For a restaurant that prides itself on an open kitchen, what I saw was unacceptable. Until management takes food safety seriously and addresses issues like this, I cannot recommend this place to anyone. read more

We were a large party of 8 that came to eat! The location was convenient after coming from a rage room session across the street. We arrived right at dinner time and were greeted by the host. It looks smaller than it seems when you enter but there is also a back space. The bar space is pretty small though and the atmosphere is very chilled. Our waitress arrived with water and took our drink order first. We ordered a few things from the drink menu, including the Bronx berry mule, which was Delicious!! The mussels we ordered also had good flavor, the sauce really made the mussels pop. I had the harvest burger which was a deconstructed veggie burger with quinoa as a base. It was surprisingly delicious and I really enjoyed it. Thanks to my fellow peers, I also tried the lamb burger, sweet potato fries and the garlic fries. I have no complaints, they made sure you tasted the garlic in the garlic fries and the meal was packed with flavor. You can order regular fries, if you choose to. I wanted to give this place a 5 but our server left without notifying there would be a switch. Our new waiter was attentive. It did take a while to receive our meal and our appetizer came out with the meal. Overall, this place is a nice corner gem. Came back here for brunch with my Little and hubbs. They have a 90-minute flowing drink offer for additional which is great, if only for the fact that they offer screwdrivers and greyhounds, in addition to sangria and mimosas. This morning seemed a little disjointed. We arrived after 12p, when they should have been opened. There was a party of three waiting for them to open and we were all looking at each other, bewildered. At first, it didn't look as though anyone was inside but then I saw someone fixing their hair in a mirror. I decided to call them via my mobile, and ask when they opened. The person that answered said they indeed opened at noon; the door was closed unfortunately. After a bit, someone came out and opened the door but then closed it and it locked so we had to wait for her to come back and open it again. Yes, this actually happened...lol We sat at a table and for most of our meal, we were one of two tables. It still seemed like service was lacking. I believe we ordered after the first table but our food arrived first. Actually, everyone else's food arrived first. Then the other table's food was brought to them and I had to ask again for my entrée because the kitchen obviously forgot my dish. I already vowed not to return because this is my second visit and the service was lacking...with only two tables. I will say that once the kitchen was informed of the mistake, they got my food out urgently. Despite the service, the food was OK. I had steak with side salad and the temperature was perfect. This time I actually received my chimichurri sauce which was a plus compared to my last visit. The only issue I had with it was that it was forgotten about and came to the table way after everyone else's food arrived. They didn't have waffles on the menu but we saw them using a waffle maker and requested waffles for my Little. I asked that they put everything on it that the French toast has, whipped cream, caramel and fresh fruit. The only thing we received was the fresh fruit. Again, only two tables were seated, so this stuff should not have been forgotten. We didn't mentioned anything and just left it be. The other thing was the butter we received for the waffle was ice cold! It was literally a little block of butter and there was no way it was going to melt. My kid pushed it to the side of her plate and it stayed a little brick the entire meal. Please, serve room temp butter or whip it so it softens easily. Hubby had their French Toast. His came with fruit and whipped cream. I didn't see any caramel but he said he tasted it. I took a bite and did not taste it so I don't know. It was not anything spectacular IMO but it did taste good and was well prepared. We ordered the brussel sprouts which were very tasty. I wish they par boiled them a but prior to sautéing because they were quite hard but they tasted good. They're roasted and sprinkled with parmesan. We also got a side of bacon and it was hella fried hard, just clumps of dry, hard bacon that once you touch it, it kind of broke apart and disintegrated. I'm assuming that they're not used to having children dine here because everything they gave my kid was in a glass. Her water was a glass cup and her juice was in a tall glass. She's four. I was worried that she would break a glass and get shards all over her or get hurt more so than when my food would get to the table. Plastic cups would have been better and I would have even been happier with a coffee cup. Glass is an unnecessary hazard for the little ones. I ordered some takeaway for my son, shrimp and grits, and CBK fries. Again, just as my last visit, the food was prepared to stay in, despite my asking for it togo. After it had been sitting at the pass, they had to throw it in a container for me to take. I overhead that they ran out of sausage so anything that had sausage in it would not have it but when I asked for the dish which also contains sausage in the grits, I was not presented with an alternative. I just ordered the shrimp and grits without anything. I think they should have given the option to have bacon added instead. The CBK fries are just their regular fries with parmesan so you might not want to splurge for those. We thought they had cheese and bacon also but apparently not. We had a decent experience. It definitely could have been better. I'm assuming people don't complain and they still come back. I'm not those people. If I find that more than one thing is lacking, on multiple visits, I won't come back. Nothing is worth my repetitive disappointment. read more

I stopped by Charlie's Bar and Kitchen just for a drink after a long day on Fri 2/9/24 and was overall pleased with my short experience. Ambiance: The restaurant is dark with candles at each table and light sconces along the expose brick wall. The decor reminded me of a 1930's jazz club. Old school R&B serenaded me as I de-stressed. I love how laid back the vibe is- you can come in with jeans and sneakers and still feel welcomed. Service: When I first arrived, I stood at the front awkwardly. Since it's a small space everyone can see when someone walks in, including the waitress. She walked past me a few times and never said "give me one second" or acknowledged me. After about 7 minutes, I went to the bartender and asked if I can seat myself or do I have to wait to be seated. He explains the waitress will seat me in a few. After a few more minutes of watching her walk past me, she showed me to my table which was near the bar. From there, the waitress was sweet as a peach so I just deduced the long wait to her being preoccupied. She kept checking on me and was very nice. Since this is a small spot, I recommend being patient and making a reservation. Drink: I ordered the Paloma which has a tequila and a grapefruit base. It was pretty, well blended and strong. I actually ended up ordering a 2nd one. You can tell they really put effort into the art of mixology. While I wasn't hungry, I seen someone at another table order the fried chicken dinner and it smelled and looked delicious. You walk in and you're welcomed by the smell of the food, the place is warm but the smell of the food makes you feel warm inside. We were greeted and seated at a low top table (that's what we requested). The brunch menu has a nice mix of southern food as well as brunch staples. I ordered the pancakes stack with a side of bacon. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles. After reviewing the menu she noticed it was a cheddar waffle. I finished my entire plate and wish I got a photo. The pancake stack as good but Inwish it wa a bit thicker and fluffier. They were on the brim of kinda being flat pancakes but doesn't take away that they were god. The bacon was on point. It was not greasy, cooked to perfection and crispy but not too crispy. My friend liked her waffles. She said the cheddar didn't add a major difference for the waffles or standout. The chicken as good but she did think it needed more salt. I got the flowing brunch drink option, you can interchange the drinks out but I stuck with the mimosa. Loved the live music during the Sunday Brunch, the service was excellent, it's in a great location, and the food was good. To eat we ordered the chicken and waffles, the chicken Benny, the shakshuka, the three eggs with toast and the pancakes with a side of bacon. We ordered the 90 minute flowing mimosas, and got a few affogatos for dessert (vanilla ice cream, espresso and Kahlua). The shakshuka was outstanding. Great flavor and first time I ever had a dish like this! I would order this again. I do wish they had jelly for my toast, but minor miss. The gravy on the biscuits, that came with the Chicken Benny, was very tasty and the biscuit was homemade. The serving sizes were quite generous. The waitresses and team of folks there would come through often for refills on the brunch drinks (Mimosa, Bellini, Screwdriver or Grey Hounds for $22 for 90 minutes), as opposed to some places where you have to send fire signals to get another drink. The food did take a bit long to come to the table but with drinks flowing, conversation going, and a little patience, the wait was worth it. Everyone was working hard, and it was quite busy so the wait was understandable. Diamond was our server and she was so pleasant and welcoming. She was attentive and thoughtful in her service, from the refills, to the details of the order. She didn't seem annoyed if ever we asked for anything and checked on us frequently. She was training a new waitress, and was so patient with her and that was nice to see. Abby was the hostess and was gracious and hospitable; she was able to accommodate my reservation change from four people to five without issue, which was appreciated. Everyone was friendly. Above all, the music was lovely, which is what I was really there for. Live music is so inviting and groovy and it's so great to provide entertainment over a meal and drinks. The set started around 1:45 and the talent was remarkable. The music set the vibe and everything else worked around it. The band encouraged crowd requests for tips and I loved that! I have been to Charlie's 4 times now, it's my boyfriends favorite place at this point. The food has been great each time. The bbq wings are some of the best wings I've ever had, we get them every time we go. So far I've had the 454 burger, which was so flavorful. I've had the burrata and tomato salad with chicken, which I really enjoyed. My boyfriend is obsessed with the steak frites and from the few bites I've had of it I would definitely recommend it. The place it self inside is very cozy. The lights are dimmed and I enjoy the decorations on the walls, especially the mural they have. My first time coming here the service was so good and everyone was welcoming, it made the place feel extra cozy. But I've noticed my last few times that the service has not been the same as my first visit there. It would be amazing if the service and friendliness of the staff matched the taste and quality of the food. Overall I will definitely keep coming back here for a good dinner.
