The Jonathan Pitney House is an absolutely lovely little B&B. There's the main house, a carriage house, and another little building in the back with a couple of suites. Lots of parking. Although Route 30 is fairly close, it's quiet and chill. Great location for anything close to the shore. We were going to a concert in Atlantic City, and this was perfect, a 15-minute drive. We stayed in the Railroad Room in the Carriage House. Really nice, cozy, welcoming space. When we arrived it was 40 degrees and raining and there was a chill in the room, but let me tell you, the heat is absolutely kicking and warmed up the room really well. Bathroom is great, huge shower and tub area. The tub is a double-soaking tub, but just be aware it's not so big that you can both sprawl out; you'll be sitting side-by-side with your legs crossed. But, plenty of hot water, really nice. The only minor quibble is that the wireless was a little spotty. There are multiple networks available and if you try all of them you can probably find one that does OK. All of the hosts were kind, welcoming, and super helpful, but I want to give special praise to Lori. My girlfriend has allergies and dietary restrictions and Lori took time to engage with us, understand what was needed, and provided a lovely safe delicious breakfast. A gem of a place hidden in Absecon, NJ. The facility was clean, staff very friendly and helpful, and the room we stayed in (The Light House Room) was romantic and charming. Enjoy my stay at this B&B! Very quiet altho it's right off the main road. I had room 15 and stayed there for one night. I totally forgot to take any photos of the room just because how excited I was upon arrival. It was super roomy. It has a sitting tv room with a tv, microwave, electric fireplace and a coffee maker. There's door doubles to the bedroom and the bathroom (WITH A TUB). Another tv facing the bed, smaller side but it's okay! Breakfast was tiny but delicious and enjoyable. Not sure why no eggs were served though? The hostesses are so kind and service was superb. read more

Very enjoyable last minute getaway to the JPH. In a different lifetime, a trip like this would have been done at The Seaview or currently at one of the two Hampton Inn properties in the nearby area but I wanted something different and remembered my Yelp friend Ray T.'s review about this place. A few notes: If you are super sensitive to noise, AC International is only a few miles away and jets do go over the property. NJT's Absecon Station is close by and there are random horn blasts during the day. North Shore Road that fronts the property is also very busy. The point of mentioning this isn't to scare anyone or to say that you shouldn't come here, but it is here and if you're expecting bucolic and rural you need to keep your expectations in check. I chose the rear carriage house with #15. This room is at the back of the property that only has #15 and #16 which is on the second floor over #15. The room is well laid out with a king bed, large bathroom with a deeep soaking tub, front sitting area, microwave, small fridge and a Keurig. Water bottles and snacks are also available anytime in the main house. After you make a reservation you get an email or two explaining their check in procedures, breakfast time, check out time, etc. It's very thorough. secure.thinkreservations.com/jonathanpitneyhouse/reservations If you can't make it before their staffed check in time ends, they have an outside mailbox system where they leave a plastic folder with all needed instructions about how to get into the main house, if applicable the key for your room, an area map and some history about Dr. Pitney. Another huge plus is that the pictures and descriptions of their rooms are very accurate. This isn't as big of deal for a cookie cutter chain hotel stay but at a B&B it does matter since every property and even every room can be very unique. Breakfast is every day from 8-10 and it's also well done. Scrambled eggs with some herbs from the garden on the side of the house, oatmeal, waffle, french toast with some freshly cut fruit were the offerings over both mornings. I agree with one or two others that Absecon itself is not a hotbed of activities but within a decently short drive you can see Lucy the Elephant in Margate, the Absecon Lighthouse, the filth of AC, take a drive around the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge or a visit to Smithville. I mention Smithville last because the same family that owns the B&B also owns Smithville. My wife and I had a fantastic chat as we were leaving with one of the owners about both places. That alone was worth the visit. Anything less than five stars for the Pitney House would be criminal. We had a fantastic stay and no doubt in the near future we'll be back. A+ read more

Charming old world style first floor room in The Carriage House and a nice made to order breakfast. It's a bit difficult to find the entrance at nighttime., Apple and Google maps lead you close to the place, but there's no street signage saying Pitney House. You've got to look for the building the sign is on the side of the building, to find it and then we drove past the parking lot entrance three times. My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary on 11/20/22. After searching in MD, DE, PA, and NJ, we finally found The Jonathan Pitney bed and breakfast. Every other place was booked for the Thanksgiving week except this place, and yes, we were a bit skeptical. I booked the weekend and requested a few special add ons for a more romantic touch. We checked in and were pleasantly surprised at how the room mirrored the brochure. My wifes eyes lit up when she saw the full arrangement of roses, chocolate covered strawberries, and two bottles of wine on ice. Breakfast was in the main building, where there was fresh coffee, tea, and an assortment of snacks. The food was not your run of the mill continental style breakfast. The server came out, I didn't get her name, but she was very pleasant and helpful while she explained the menu to us. We both selected the waffle and egg & spinach pie, which looked very good. However, I have never been a fan of any kind of quiche so I won't say it was bad, I just don't have a palate for it. Other than that, good service and atmosphere. Overall, we enjoyed the rustic feel, the intimacy and romance of our stay. I would definitely visit again. read more

Homey and authentic, this 1700's home has been converted into a B&B with historic vibes and two progressively modern extensions. The highlight is breakfast, a varied daily creation with nice sweet / savory balance. From time to time, they run out of the main dishes, which is a bummer for the price. Speaking of the price, this inn asks for a bit more than the property and service should. Expect to pay luxury prices for quaint accommodations. That said, this is close to our fam's place so we're obliged to pony up and we always enjoy ourselves. Very kind service and attentive staff. read more

We needed accommodations to attend a family gathering and took a chance on this B&B. It elevated our one night trip into a real getaway!. Our room (the Studio) had everything we needed and was easily accessible (my husband uses a walker so this is important for us). The staff was helpful and friendly, and we had access to snacks and bottled water. Delicious breakfast too. It's on Route 9 so you're not out in the country, but the grounds and garden are nice and the location is good for all AC-area attractions. Looking forward to staying here again! Enjoyable getaway weekend with the wife at the Jonathan Pitney House B&B! Notes of interest: 1. Room- we were in the carriage house room 14, second story. Cozy, fireplace, TV, king-sized bed, hardwood floors, soaking tub and modern bathtub. Mattress was on the firm side, pillows were the "flat" and "harder" variety. All windows had privacy shades except the door, which had a shear curtain- slightly odd and revealing. We could hear noise and TV murmur from the downstairs, and I'd imagine our footsteps were audible to those downstairs...who oddly arrived home at midnight both nights and didn't seem to sleep at all. Possible vampires. 2. Breakfast- excellent! Eggs with home grown herbs on Saturday with a small sweet waffle side, and Sunday was apple French toast with a small egg souffle. Coffee excellent, juice available, and starters of fresh fruit, yogurt, or Oatmeal. Decent portion sizes, but I did request- and get- a second serving of egg. Two dining room areas plus outside porch tables on nicer (not December) days. 3. Property- very well kept; plenty of off street parking; beautiful home, well maintained. Some road noise, some train blasts, and some aircraft flight path thunders, but overall, very n8ce place to stay. The town doesn't offer too much, but we enjoyed Christmas shopping at Smithville and taking a walk on the OC boards. Obviously, AC is the nearby attraction, if that's your thing! I was so excited to stay here but unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. I love staying at historical bed and breakfasts and booked this room after reading an interesting article about the inn's history. Part of the experience of staying at a B&B is the cozy and welcoming experience. This has neither. When we arrived our key was in an envelope outside with directions on how to get in. They had an afternoon "snack" in the entryway of water and 2 different kinds of cookies. Coffee and tea were available with a Keurig. The grounds and the buildings are absolutely stunning. We didn't see anyone the rest of the night - NO-ONE. Our welcome pamphlet said breakfast was between 8-10am. We walked over to the kitchen around 8:30 and not a soul was around and the same cookies were out from the night before. The only other room that was occupied came down and said they stayed the night before as well and said they had a full breakfast and it was amazing as long as seeing people working and a great snack buffet. Finally we decided to call the inn. After about 15-20 minutes someone came over and apologized. I'm still not sure what the issue was, she said her car broke down but that just didn't line up to the timeline of events. We waiting about another 30 minutes for some omelets. I'm beyond confused at how this happened. I received a call during this ordeal from one of the owners (I guess) who had children screaming in the background and sounded like she was in the middle of something or somewhere. She ended up hanging up before even speaking to me. This was an absolute cluster. I feel bad for the woman who had to come and throw breakfast together for the 4 of us, because it did not seem like it was her fault nor her responsibility. I travel often and have stayed at a ton of places and I've never quite had an experience like this before. It should not have mattered whether 2 rooms were occupied, or they were at full capacity, we should have had the same service. I've never felt less welcomed somewhere. The ambiance and vibe of bed and breakfasts are always incredible, but this was just a let down all the way around. I'm really not sure where the glitch here is, but it would be wonderful for future guests if they adjusted some of their practices. read more

What a wonderful place! I would rate my overall experience as excellent, highly highly recommend this to everyone! Especially during these times of COVID. I stayed here for a few days and can't say enough about how awesome the staff is, the overall place is, and how CLEAN they are and how delicious their food is! The breakfast was more than enough and super filling, with lots of options (for both food and drinks). They offer these amazing homemade/bakery made shortbread cookies as snacks, which were a delight. From what I understand most rooms have their own fridge and Keurig if you don't want to be to social in these times of COVID, they also offer free waters, teas, and coffee in the main kitchen. The bed was just right, not to hard and not to soft, the fire place was a nice touch and they have a full cable plan if you want to watch tv. And the towels... were so luxurious! There's a few restaurants and pubs nearby within walking distance, inside of the main house there are directions and lists to get to them. read more

Took a small 3 day getaway vacation with my wife. Had heard of this place from staying at Colonial Inn. Service was great. Rooms was comfortable and clean. Stayed in the Atlantic room-not in main building. Room was large and bed comfortable. Their breakfast was different each day. All very good. Will definitely try again. read more

We originally had to cancel our booking due to the pandemic. Finally, we were able to stay at the Jonathan Pitney House. After careful consideration we selected Room #15. It was very spacious with a comfortable king size bed, sitting room, two TV's, fireplace and a small fridge. We enjoyed the rocking chairs on the shared patio. Everything was very clean & online has accurate descriptions. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious. Fresh and homemade. The staff were all super friendly. The only thing that is noteworthy: the bathroom in room #15 is open at the the top of two walls. So, if you are in the bathroom you can hear what is going on in the bedroom & sitting area and visa versa. My suggestion: if this is your first getaway with someone you will probably want more privacy and to select one of their other lovely rooms. We have been together over 22 years so it didn't bother us at all. We sincerely enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to the next time. read more

Good location, quiet and beautiful property, clean and nicely decorated rooms, and friendly staff. We visited the Smithville Shoppes and ate a GREAT dinner at Joe and John's nearby. A few honest heads-up; we didn't sleep well and both our backs hurt this morning. If you like a very firm mattress; you'll be fine. The porch lights were bright and on all night. You are sharing a house; so in our case; when we used our bathroom; we could literally listen to the couples conversation in room next to us; so we skipped taking a bath together in the nice tub. Lovely area to enjoy breakfast together in the main home; however the food is prepped ahead and limited. Coffee and tea bar. We were offered a parfait or hot apple crumb (the apple crumb was delicious). We were then served an omelet with ham/cheese/peppers (I don't eat that) along with a sweet cookie waffle which was yummy of course. This was our first stay in a B&B; so to be fair; I didn't have anything to compare it to; other than the hotels we always stay in with the big breakfast spreads included the next day. I had a pleasant stay in room #6. Staff there are very friendly and helpful prices were decent and service was great. However beds were pretty uncomfortable for pregnancy having to sleep on my side I woke up with a numb arm so I slept on my other side and woke up having to actually physically move my arm cause it was in so much pain.. rooms were also a bit chilly in my opinion we even up the temperature to 80 but didn't seem to get any warmer. Overall I would definitely recommend. Probably dress a bit warmer while there! read more

We stayed 2 nights celebrating our 1 year anniversary. Everything was perfect. The room #12 was so comfortable, completely outfitted with everything we would need from a small microwave to a 2 person soaking tub. What made this room stellar was the front covered porch with 2 teak rocking chairs. Even though it rained (HARD) all day Saturday and Saturday night we were able to sit out snuggled under a blanket and just talk and drink our champagne. The gas fireplace was wonderful. Kept our room so toasty and provided such romance for us. Breakfast was nice. Comfort food, french toast casserole one morning and ham and cheese omelets the next. The owner Tracy and her daughter were on site in the morning and we got to talking about the history of the house and her family. It was wonderful to feel so welcomed and learn of her family's commitment to the town. She was so nice and warm. Tracy's staff was amazing, whatever they could do for us they offered. Every day there were fresh cookies that were to die for and ice cold water usually with some kind of fruit and home grown herbs. The ground of the home are immaculate. Stayed only 1 night although it was supposed to be for 2 and did we miss out ! The place is wonderful . We stayed in the railroad room and it was a perfect room complete with a fireplace. The old Victorian main house is picture perfect, along comes two additional smaller buildings with more rooms . The grounds are well kept , check in was easy, outdoor seating is abundant, the rooms are kept immaculate , no old smell here , updated bathroom with soaker tub, no need to request extra towels they are there if needed already . Open kitchen as in most B & B with snacks and fruit, yogurts etc, but add on an extremely welcomingly staff that is most accommodating. The breakfast that morning was waffles ,and a baked egg dish with yogurt ,herbs etc, sausage ,fresh fruit,oatmeal ,toast, when the hostess very friendly told us the menu she also mentioned that the cook can make eggs upon request ( etc if they have ingredients ) we ask for scrambled eggs , waffles ,sausages, toast, and potatoes - and they pleasantly provided it. It is minutes from Smithsville and atlantic city .Close and walkable to local food places. Will definitely plan another stay read more

Stayed two nights at the Pitney House it was absolutely wonderful, greeted by a gracious host Tracy with a wealth of knowledge on the history of the now bed and breakfast. The room was clean and cozy very inviting and warm a homey feel we were looking for, they offer flavored water coffee, tea and small snacks available whenever you get the feeling. The location is fantastic for travel to Atlantic City and Smithville ,easy access to the Parkway and expressway, would definitely recommend staying for a small getaway. read more

The house and grounds are not only impressively beautiful but there's plenty of space to interact with other guests as much, or as little, as you like! The staff we met were the perfect balance of super friendly and accommodating without being overbearing or imposing. I was most impressed with how they took care of all the little details to make our stay as simple, easy, and comfortable as possible. Check-in and out was organized and convenient, there is coffee, water (flavored with fruit and herbs from their garden!), bottled water and snacks available at all hours, plenty of towels and toiletries in room, wi-fi easy to access, etc etc etc. I can't say enough. We stayed at the Jonathan Pitney House for one night while attending a show in AC this past weekend. We were looking for an alternative to the standard boardwalk hotel options and this definitely did not disappoint! From the moment we walked in to the moment we left we were very impressed with everything about our stay and knew that we had made the right choice. Check-in/check-out was very quick and organized, the rooms were well-kept and cozy and the staff was phenomenal! They certainly went out of their way to make sure our stay was as enjoyable as possible by including amenities such as access to water and snacks throughout the day, free wif-fi and plenty of toiletries in the room. Additionally the provided breakfast was delicious, consisting of fresh fruit, an egg bake(enhanced by fresh ingredients from the garden on site), and waffles, as well as an assortment of juices and coffee. We will definitely be looking forward to staying here again when we return to the area! read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights and it was the best experience I've had at a hotel in a long time. All of the staff were lovely and the hospitality was astounding. I felt so welcomed and the house itself is beautiful. We were given homemade breakfast every morning that made me feel "at home".
