Now I really get to check this place out even though I already love it here. When you sign up you can take classes at this location or their SMU location (above Barley House). They offer classes from kickboxing, barre type classes, cardio, weight training and even have a spin studio. The classes I have taken each have pumpin' music and you do the exercises to the beat of the music and are led by an instructor. Each instructor I have had, have been fun, and energetic. The classes are big so you watch and listen to the instructor to see what to do at each move. I love classes where you're on your own but have the community vibe too. Not that I don't like working out with men but there's something nice about an all female gym where you feel a little bit more at ease. I have seen one or two guys in here so it looks like they can take a class? I am fully digging this place and liking the scheduled, and all the different work outs to choose from. Parking feels a little challenging being off Irving Blvd but I have never had an issue. You check in at the front desk and go to your workout room. The instructor/coach will give you further instructions. When leaving make sure you put up any equipment and wipe down your mat with the cleaners and paper towels provided. The GRIT app is so easy to use and you see the full schedule of classes at both studios. There are descriptions of the classes and will let you know if sneakers, grip socks or being barefoot is required.

I've been back 1-2 times a week since and each class I've taken the instructors have been amazing and the workouts have all been KILLER!! I love encouraging instructors that also offer modifications so that you feel inspired but not embarrassed if something is too hard and everyone has fit that. My partner already had everything and I mean what you expect when she is a Black belt in martial arts. I have been to plenty of group fitness classes and this is the first time I ever went with my partner. She made the experience so freak amazing. The place was clean and the bathroom super clean and lockers in the lobby and bathroom which is super nice to have. Now the class it was a tough one and Jen made it super interactive and fun ! She kept us engaged and motivated us the whole workout. I'd have to admit I was gassed after 30 min and my partner was over there punching the bags like a championship fight. There was an excellent mix of boxing and exercise. They provide you with gloves when you arrive. They also make sure the bag you reserved is at the right height for you. Even with the initial confusion, he accepted my companion and myself for an hour of workout at his gym, located in the same building as the New School of Architecture. Glen has an extensive background in posture improvement and workouts that fit your medical needs. He tailors the workout for you and personal training sessions are around $40/hour/person if you are in a party of 2. I like the personal approach and the possibilities of how can you shape your body. As per the gym, is like one of those 'boutique hotels': petite but with everything, in a vintage building and with excellent views to the Coronado bridge and central library dime.

Do you want somene who will yell and belittle you into training hard, only to go home and wish and pray that somehow a bus "accidentally" hit your personal trainer? Do you want a trainer that calls you all the time to see what you are eating like a prison guard constantly searching you for contraband? Do you want to work out someone who cancels without notice, improperly bills you or says you are going to have 1-on-1 sessions only to invite several d-bags they met at Intervention to join in? Well, if you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, don't call Big Bricks. Glenn is on time, treats you like an adult, doesnt yell and scream, and if you want to work out in a class - he'll give you a class, but if you want a solo session (and he has the time available), you will get a solo session. Again, no trainer, and I mean nooooooo trainer will get you to be in shape if you don't want to, so don't expect just to workout an hour a week and watch the pounds melt off. But what Glenn does is he gives you the tools to work out correctly, talks to you about what you should be doing on your own (food/workouts) and doesn't blow smoke up your ass about imaginary results just to keep you coming back for more. As I said, I've known Glenn and have worked out with him since 2008 and it wasn't until mid last year when I finally decided to do workouts outside my comfort zone (comfort zone = treadmill for 45 min and weights; not comfort zone = workouts that made me sweat like a whore in church) that I saw amazing results and hopefully will continue to.
