I recently purchased a firearm and did the private party transfer through Jones' Fort. I live seven hours away so this purchased required two trips up north to the store as well as multiple calls with questions that I had. Each phone was answered by friendly staff. They were patient and answered any questions that I had. In store I got to deal with both Jaime and Jacob. Both of these guys were very friendly, helpful, and professional! Had great conversations both times in was in the shop. I didn't experience anything like previous negative reviews indicated. I think they may have gotten a bad rap! I should have read the reviews before walking into this place. I walked in and immediately was asked to show ID. Didn't think much of it since I thought this was the store policy or something. I was greeted by a younger gentleman, he was very helpful and seemed eager to answer my questions about a firearm while the older man was very condescending and nudging him to stop talking to me. I felt like I was not welcome in their store. Every question I asked the older man was answered with an excuse on why they couldn't help me. None of the other customers that walked in while I was there were asked to show ID. Then after reading all the other reviews I realized it wasn't because they couldn't, but because they didn't want to help me. Also their prices are way to high. Redding guns, the gun cave, Bastiani arms and sportsman's have always been very friendly and helpful. I'll be going to them for any future purchases. read more

Over the last 25 years, I have purchased over 5k in guns, ammo, and supplies from Jones Fort. Prices were never the best, but they usually had what I needed for an exact need. Even though I would describe myself as a good customer... the pleasant but busy guy who buys with no tire kicking...the owners...especially Patrick... would rudely make me wait and wait while they pontificated with all sorts of people about the government, local politics, or some sort of imagined danger and how to defend against it. (Obviously, they had spent their entire lives behind the counter of their little store and never actually used a weapon in real life and death situations.) As a gainfully employed customer, I couldn't wait all day, so more and more I made purchases elsewhere. Patrick's shinning me on about pre-paid parts that didn't arrive for many months was irritating but lies about having not sold a competition H&K I had on consignment was the final straw. After a couple of months of lies on the phone, I found the gun HAD been sold! After waiting and waiting, and him avoiding me when I came in he claimed " You can't expect me to have that kind of money to pay you now!!! What?? Someone had paid him weeks ago...but he can't pay me?? The help is rude. Service is slow. To top it off last week, he openly backed up a local white supremacist who called a local black veteran the N..... word.... publicly...and then kicked the veteran out! The day after Veterans Day!!!! (it's on video). Stick with me with a fork...I am done. There are lots of better gun shops in town now. I will never step foot in Jones Fort again. read more

I've been going to Jones Fort for well over a decade, and I've always found them friendly and helpful. Patrick is THE man to talk about about shotguns, Marshall Jr is THE man to talk to about reloading, and the others behind the counter have always been knowledgeable about anything I've asked. I have bought firearms from Jones Fort and have also used them as an FFL. In both capacities they are good people to work with. Some shops try to discourage internet purchasing by setting their FFL fees way high (like $100). Jones Fort, last time I did a transfer, was $35 (EDIT: Not anymore, it's $100). Ammo prices are definitely reasonable in comparison to other shops around town. You might find a firearms cheaper elsewhere, but after dealing with the VERY misinformed people at Nice Shot and the lack of professionalism at Great Outdoors (EDIT: closed now), I'll be doing any future purchasing at Jones Fort. If the price is a little higher, I'll consider it worth it so that I can deal with professionals. EDIT: Well, unfortunately Jones Fort now charges $100 for transfers, and for the love of me I don't know why (save my theory that they wish to discourage internet purchasing). If the gun is used, though, and not likely to be found locally, why punish your customers? Does it really cost $100 for the labor and time to do transfers? If so, then I'll gladly pay, but the price seems inflated since I was able to do transfers through an FFL in Sacramento for a third the cost. This group of fine people were always able to answer my questions whenever I phoned in for guidance on California's arcane gun laws. Once, they sold me a used .22 rifle that had something wrong with it, and when I pointed that defect out a few weeks later, they cheerfully ordered me a new .22 rifle (a Chipmunk, one of my favourites) at basically no cost to me. On the few occasions I have used their gunsmithing services, they have been extremely quick with the turnaround time. I have visited all the other gun stores in Redding and Chico, but this is the one I turn to when I need solid advice and a good price. read more

I have been to other shops and treated rudely, ignored, and yet received the answers I needed. I usually do not take the time to write reviews, but I think I will take some time for this one. My dad bought me a rifle from these guys for Christmas and I went in the following day to get help with a few questions I had. Not only did I not feel welcome in there at all, it was difficult to get help even when there were guys standing around behind the counter. The answers they gave me were knowledgeable but were short and to the point without any feeling of wanting to be of help, just that I was a nuisance. Took Marlin lever gun in for a screw replacement on Friday. Was told by Patrick it could get done on Monday. I called back late Monday, was told middle of the week. I went in late Wednesday. Was told by Patrick they didn't have the screw and would have to order it. The following Monday, I still had not heard from them. I called and and was told by Marshall that he couldn't get the screw so I went in to retrieve my gun that they could not repair in 10 days. Upon picking it up, I found that they had bent the front sight and dinged the pivot screw on the lever. What chuckle-heads! Took gun to Bastiani Arms. See that review. This, plus the fact that their prices are way higher for everything than the other gun shops in town, I will not do business with Jones Fort anymore. read more

Marshall Jones, Sr. gave me my first gun safety training 25 years ago when I was 10, with the rest of my family. Since then, I have relied on Jones Fort for sage advice, firearm knowledge, and purchase of said firearms. Jones, Jr. and Patrick run the show now and they have always been friendly and generous with their time and wisdom. Marshall is a very kind, gentle guy overflowing with firearms knowledge. He has built his own (very) large caliber rifles from buttstock to crown, reloaded custom brass, and is always willing to impart wisdom to someone interested enough to ask. Please do ask; you won't be disappointed. Patrick is a shotgunner and has always been excited to answer my questions or talk different makes and models and their merits. John is an aficionado of 1911's and the .45 round in particular and is free with his advice. He has an opinion, is willing to share it, and is a fascinating character. He truly loves firearms and wants you to enjoy them too. This is a good shop with good honest people working there. I don't live in town but my last two firearms were bought at Jones Fort. I've stopped at this place now for the final time. I've been here 3 times now to make a purchase, but didn't even receive acknowledgement from anyone Behring the gun counter. After waiting about 30 minutes to look at and probably purchase a shotgun, I assumed that I would be the next customer... Wrong. You know what they say about assume - it makes an ass out of you and me. Should have made the obvious decision after the 2nd stop here. Bastiani Arms is the polar opposite of this place. I have bought guns at almost every dealer in town since 2007. I have found Marshal and John both very easy to work with. Their younger employees are also very friendly and quick to help. I like older guns and they seem to get a steady supply that keeps me coming back. I will say that I was disappointed in their gun smithing service and now use another Gun smith. Jones fort is a redding landmark and a respectable business. I do not think anyone in this store would be dishonest in any of their business dealings. This being said, I have found the staff to be distant, difficult to communicate with, and many times rude. I came into the store to purchase a J-frame revolver to carry as an ankle gun, the clerk told me I needed a .45 caliber 1911 and should forget the ankle gun. I explained that I had several options for a main carry including a 1911, but he still kept pushing the gun. Another time I brought my wife into the store to look at handguns. We asked for a gun with an easy slide to pull as my wife has difficulty with this. The clerk handed her a sig with a stiff slide and just kept telling her not to be afraid of the gun. Over all, not helpful. I think the store has limited stock, and the staff just pushes whatever is in the cases. read more

I don't know about the experience of these posters and I will admit that I haven't been there for awhile, but in the past these guys have been very helpful. Maybe what is happening is that the reviewers are not being pressed on buying guns. Nothing wrong with being undersold. I have been to other gun shops in Redding where I was pressed to buy something I wasn't really interested in. My suggestion is to inform yourself a bit more before going into a shop so you at least have an idea of what you are interested in. Sorry if I have offended anyone who feels different or have just missed your POV. You may be a more informed customer than I realize or maybe you are just shopping. I would NOT Recommend Jones Fort I . I took a (1891-1892) Winchester lever action in to have it Safety checked and cleaned. According to the manager they spent 4hrs cleaning it and test firing it. When I checked it it did not look like it had ever been cleaned and was told it was because the barrel was pitted and I would never get it clean. I wish I could post a photo to show what I got out of the barrel. What I got was not just a small amount of black residue or rust. I now need to find a new gunsmith and have it redone because I am not even sure they test fired it. I will never buy anything from them ever. read more

I have been in Jone's Fort twice looking at air rifles. Not knowing much about them, I was hoping that someone could answer a few questions. A young man behind the counter acted as if I were a nuisance and was very unhelpful and rude and arrogant. I went back in about a year later, hoping for better results, but I ended up dealing with the same kid again as every one else was either on the phone or talking to other customers. Same routine, he showed me one rifle and when I asked questions about it he just stared at the window looking put out. When I asked him if he had any other models, he said that he could order something, but then said that this was a gun shop, insinuating that if I wanted a toy, I should go elsewhere. I am actually in the market for another "real gun', but I would never buy from them. I prefer to buy from businesses that are local and It is very rare that I leave a business feeling frustrated and angry But this has been my experience twice. read more
