Came here for a lovely birthday celebration for my friend. Jacob was working while we were there, and he was friendly and helpful. I appreciate that we were able to decorate the table with our own items (tablecloth, disposable plates and cutlery, bud vases, napkins). There was also a table near the entrance where we could put the pizza we ordered and the birthday cake. The wines were all quite good, and we had a wonderful three hours. It was also nice we could connect our own Spotify music to the speakers. I will say the only awkward thing was that the store remains open, so folks came in and out to buy wine, but I guess they probably felt more awkward than we did since everyone made their purchases quickly. read more

Went to a friends birthday here and it was a fun intimate experience. The shop is quaint and allowed you to decorate. The wine tasting itself was very nice. No set pace, just flowing glasses as you were ready. Once the tasting was over we all get very generous pours of our choosing. Pricing was fair too and the wine selections were fun. The store remained open to the public during the event, but you hardly noticed the people coming and going. Such a cozy spot in the West Village, definitely a hole-in the wall, but stop by if you get the chance. I came with a group of friends Wednesday night, where they hold a weekly wine tasting. The owner was super sweet and knowledgeable, and we ended up talking his ear off about what foods would go well with the wines they were showcasing that night. The decor inside is super cute, and I love how they have notes about the wine above each of the bottles, so you get a really good understanding of the flavor palette and notes before you buy! Honestly, I prefer Astor Wine. I popped in here this past weekend as I was in the area. I wanted to have a bottle of white wine but I didn't want to make the trip to Astor. My mistake. I ended up getting two different bottles, $15 each. I didn't expect much, but still, I was disappointed. The same quality of wine would've cost me half as much at Astor Wine. Giving them benefit of the doubt. Maybe I didn't pick good ones? I'm open to getting another bottle again, but I would ask for a tasting first. read more

I live right next door to this place and over the years have gotten to know the workers (and owner) pretty well. Not well enough to speak outside of the shop, but to where everyone is super friendly and recognizes you every time you come in. The wines are good, not great. They range from like $13 on up. Most of the time the cheapest I get is $14. They have a fridge is the back of the register too if you'd like a wine that's already chilled. On Wednesday's they have wine tastings. I've never been, but pass by them on my way home from work and they always look like fun. It's free wine and mingling with your neighbors basically. The only thing annoying about this is when you want to actually buy wine and the worker is drinking wine with their friends and not paying attention to someone who actually wants to buy something and is waiting at the register. Or you're trying to fight against the crowd just to get a bottle of wine lol. Other than that, I love this place and highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

Winesby.com is the place to go if you love wine and want someone else to have tasted and selected a WIDE range of types, all for under $20. You can order by the bottle, but you'll soon find yourself ordering by the case. Jeff (the owner) is extremely helpful. Finally! A wine store that takes pride in its selection instead of peddling crap!! Note: we used to take our old station wagon out to Smith and Vine in Brooklyn when we needed to get a few cases. Nice place; horrible service. I walked in after work and to my surprise there was a tasting. I said hello. The guy that worked there looked me in my eyes then proceeded telling the people there about the next wine. I was so embarrassed that I pretended to look at the nearest bottle. I have had so many fantastic experiences at Jones Street wine that i had to write a review- the owner stocks fantastic and interesting wines. They have wines for the entry-level drinker all the way to the high end of the spectrum, but what I truly appreciate is that they don't care what price range you're in or how much you know about wine. What they care about is finding you a wine you'll like that is in your price range - unpretentious, no BS, excellent wine. I have a soft spot for the tiny, independently owned wine shop with a small selection that reflects the owners style, taste and attitude in a way that parallels mine and this place is exactly that. I work in Soho and have tried to come into JSW as often as I can. Not often enough though. The owner, Joel, is a very friendly and laid back guy who will talk to you about his wines for as long, or as short, as you want. His selection, which is not vast as the store space is small, is always very interesting. There is no attitude here. No up-selling or condescending. Joel is also very open-minded when it comes to wine and shows a genuine interest about wines he may have never tried. Go here if you live nearby or are in the area and want to try some good, fairly priced examples of wines that you don't really see in other, larger stores. I used to live right next to this shop when it was still in its former iteration, "Wines by .com," which was a very cool and minimalist, boutique wine shop owned by quite a character. The shop is still similar in a lot of ways, but it has also undergone a face lift and has had some new life breathed into it. The layout is slightly different, there is greater variety now, and also more inventory. The owner of JSW, Joel, is a great guy and was previously involved at Pasita, a small, West Village pizza and wine bar which you may be familiar with. I like his laid back approach and his vision for the store. There are always some tried and true staples available, but he's also not afraid to push the envelope a bit and bring in some more obscure varietals, or wines from relatively unknown producers. He has a good palate and is knowledgeable such that making recommendations or suggestions to his customers is never an issue or a bother. If you are a "big box" wine store person, who likes to roll up and just grab your favorite bottle of California Cab or Oregon Pinot, you might be thrown off by this place. However, if you like to explore the diversity that the wines of the world have to offer and aren't afraid to try something new now and then, which might be out of your comfort zone, then I highly recommend JSW. It's a great little wine shop with a lot of character, and I'm happy to support them whenever I can. Cheers! read more

Perfection. I love this shop because it's perfectly curated and has excellent descriptions posted with each wine including recommended food pairings. As a result I wind up stepping out of my comfort zone and trying things I otherwise wouldn't have. They have a lot of very affordable bottles but also a few swanky choices in case you want to splurge. The owner is helpful if you want help or just lets you browse and read descriptions at your leisure. This is not the closest wine shop to my home, but it is my favorite. read more

My husband and I happened on winesby.com by chance while wandering aimlessly this weekend. At first, I thought it looked extremely odd. A tiny, tucked out of the way space, winesby sells only a handful of wines. Each is displayed on its own little shelf along the wall alongside a detailed description. Rather than filling their store with countless bottles at every price and of all varieties, the owners of winesby have hand-selected a small but carefully culled stock. There are a lot of interesting varietals, as well as several better-known ones, and the wines come from around the world. Best of all, with the exception of 3 or 4 bottles, all were under $20. I don't know about you, but my neighborhood is full of awful wine stores full of swill that costs well over $20. To find a place that takes such pride in selecting interesting, great bottles and selling them at such an affordable price.....well, this seems like a true find in New York!
