Pretty disappointed in this location. I've been visiting over the past year, and oftentimes, I would buy something only to open it at home and find it was spoiled. Like today, I returned some garlic spread that wasn't supposed to expire until next month. They also sell milk past its due date (like Bruguière's) and require you to bring a receipt just to get your milk bottle deposit back. On top of that, I often get singled out by the security guard, who specifically follows me throughout the store. They're allegedly part of the group of businesses that built a wall to block small businesses from being seen or using the parking lot. They reportedly wanted at least one of those small businesses to start paying $100k a year instead of $60k. Which is wild because they just spent a bunch of money remodeling. read more

I don't know why all the hate here for Jon's. This is a staple for delicious food from all over the world. You want vegetable spread from Armenia, got it. You want sausage from Russia, got it. You want fresh tortillas from Mexico, got it. You need flowers, light bulbs, extension cord or glue, got it. Been coming here for over a decade and it's fine. Really frustrating experience at Jon's Marketplace. They advertise discounts and sale prices online, but the prices in store don't match, and apparently nobody updates them. I didn't notice until after I left, which made it even more irritating. I even called FIVE times trying to get ahold of someone before having to leave this review, and nobody answered. In this economy, people are paying close attention to prices and budgeting carefully, so advertising deals that aren't honored is honestly misleading and extremely inconvenient. I actually feel like there are legit good deals here specially on days when strawberries on go on sale ($1.79 for a little container which is usually double the price) I eagerly wait for grapes and strawberries to go on sale here after my gym run. My usual purchases are bananas and avocados and $0.99 for medium sized avocados aren't bad I guess. I have had previous experience on a different location where the cheese selection and deli was awesome so I suppose this location is not any different. One of these days when I break my diet I will totally try the hot food section. Other than that, all of the staff that I interacted with were nice and courteous and remembers that for a period of time, I don't usually get bags nor receipt. This location gets a good amount of weirdos lol but that's not their fault, its the location. I only wish that I could control how some people pay in line, sometimes people be taking so long to pay and it holds up the line. Definitely one of the nicer Jon's I've been into, really bright and spacious compared to others. The cool thing about Jon's is their deals are insane... it's hard to believe, but that awesomeness comes with a very gritty area surrounding the parking lot and neighboring businesses... it's skid row-esque on the outside, but "fashion district" on the inside (a lot nicer is what I'm getting at... no they don't have a clothing section here... there are some other shops neighboring however). I came here to get ingredients to make a potatoes salad, between various onions, red potatoes, condiments, spices and what not.... I spent $10.... I nearly passed out in check out having forgot how wonderful the prices are at all Jon's locations... my only dilemma is the lack of vegetarian/vegan options here for me shopping more regularly or at least the really crappy brands of things they do carry like for tofu and soyrizo... which I can get cheaper and better quality at other markets (Korean, Asian, Thai) or chain grocers (Trader Joe's or Food4Less). Overall it's an easy in and out... isles are somewhat sporadic as you pass them... the spirits, beer and wine here is very standard stuff (bad wine and non craft brew abundance), but also very reasonable. No complaints whatsoever.... the woman who rang me up was so kind and friendly especially considering she dealt with the most difficult customer ahead of me who couldn't figure out how to use her new debit card as well as her coupons... she wanted to clerk to figure out which ones she could use and couldn't and she had at least 20... some people right... read more

I came in here today for a Kombucha drink to accompany my lunch. As soon as I walked in, it felt like I was fighting for my life. People that shop here are so rude and acted like I wasn't even there practically ready to bump/run into me as I'm willingly and mindfully trying to avoid/stay out of people's way. There's this worker named Milagro, she's so kind and very outgoing with costumers, by far the best costumer service I've encountered. Although she doesn't speak much English, she has the capacity to give a good costumer service. Went in to get some drinks and snacks and the there's was only 1 register open. There was a line of 10 people and the lady in front of me asked if they could open another register? I tried this store sometime last year for the first time and i was not impressed. Fresh bread and bakeries are good here. That will be the only good i think come out of these markets. We have a few of them in Orange County where i live. Meats are out of date it seems with a funny taste to them. Parking area is scary, Make sure you lock your car up and leave no valuebles inside. I would rather shop here than my local Pavilions. Why? Because Pavilions hides behind a big name and makes no effort. This place is part of a much smaller chain but by no means does it skimp in effort. There are always people tidying up, almost as much as a Gelson's staff does. You never have to look far for a helpful employee -- I'm not sure what some of the other reviews are going on about. Perhaps there's a language barrier they can't breach that I don't have to contend with because I speak Spanish. I always come here for the large selection of my beloved chilis. And South American products. And hot sauces. And imported drinks. And freshly baked local pastries. Where else am I going to find lucuma ice cream from Peru?! Yes, it smells sometimes in the meat department. And the fish section smells like...um fish. Their offerings far surpass anything that I can smell there. Besides, I shop there; I don't live there. My wife and I came to Jon's market in Van Nuys, California at 7134 Sepulveda Blvd to pick up a few items and go home and have lunch. There were a few self-checkout machines open, and my wife and I went to one to scan items, pay and leave. We noticed there were no plastic bags for our items and so my wife asked the attendant for a couple of bags. I scanned the items we had and set them on the right-hand side waiting for my wife to get a couple of bags. The next thing I knew, the store manager was standing at the front door with some other store personnel, and they were staring at me as if I was stealing the Hope Diamond. I turned around to look at them as I put the items in the bags and realized they must have thought I was trying to steal, and stealing is not in my consciousness and never has been. It was quite the experience to see someone automatically assume that I must be stealing something because they didn't see something and makes an automatic assumption in a negative way. The whole incident made me feel dirty because of the negativity of untrained personnel from the store manager to the person that areas are monitoring that area. It was a disappointing experience, taking into consideration the lack of leadership as an example set of how to manage a situation. It reminded me of shopping while black because I have never stolen anything in my life, and I work in law right down the street next to the Van Nuys police station and the Van Nuys superior and federal courts. So, I'm not interested in shopping at that store any longer if their management has no better training than to make negative assumptions when they are 100% incorrect. Also, the people that were at the other stations, were nonblack, Hispanic, and Caucasian and none of them was being watched and monitored as I was once, I stepped up to check out. All I had was sandwich items, pastrami, lettuce, tomato, a French baguette, and some roses for my wife so the whole bill came to $40 or something like that, and I was monitored like I was breaking into a jewelry store in Beverly Hills. It seems Jons has gotten rid of grocery baggers at this location. If you are eco-conscious and bring your own bags, the checker refuses to bag anything unless you purchase a bag, which probably started during COVID and they left the policy. Came in this morning for some veggies and fruit after getting my workout in at Crunch. First the area is terrible so be aware of that. The actual store is clean and a good selection of fresh veggies and great prices. The meat department is lacking big time. Their prices for everyday items such as coffee, creamer, crackers, etc are about 1 to 2 bucks higher than other grocery stores. Employees were nice and checkout lines super quick. Real simple, folks. Ralphs: cilantro 79-99 cents a batch. Jons: 12-25 cents a bigger batch. Ralphs: fresh rosemary $1.99 for a small package. Jons: 50 cents for a huge batch. While the fruit at Jon's can be a bit second rate (more blemishes and spoilage....shop carefully), the veggies seem a LOT cheaper, with greater variety and fresher. The air is literally perfumed when you walk through Jon's produce. I commonly go in and buy a bunch of veggies and herbs for a meal and my total is $1, or $2, or some ridiculously low amount. This NEVER happens at Ralphs or Vons. Haven't tried the meat yet, but they DO have Angus beef in some varieties, and many many more cuts of beef. Plus butchers who are actually THERE cutting meat for you. Pricing on the beef is much better than Ralphs and Vons. Mexican food at the south side of the store is excellent. Nice flavors, and a nice amount of food for $2.99 or $5.99. Food is clearly fresher than the junk in the case at Ralphs. Obviously the ethnic items shine at Jon's. I once went to a Ralph's Fresh Fare, and they didn't even have dried chili peppers. But they DID have 14 types of balsamic vinegar. A bit elitist shall we say? Well, rich people like Mexican food too, Fresh Fare. You need to DIE quickly, as you NEVER have anything real people need! Jon's is expensive only for processed food items, such as frozen stuff like Stouffer and the like. But if you COOK, you simply can't beat it. I start at Fresh and Easy for as many items as I can get (great pricing and in and out in 10 minutes.....plus the fastest scanners known to mankind). Then I go down to Jon's and get all my produce. Then anything exotic I get at Gelsons. Only downsides to Jon's are the longer lines and the pushy people in those lines. Way too many people who leave their basket in line as a "placeholder" while they continue to shop. Or people who try to slide in front of you (or simply bully their way there). But just be aggressive and learn to say NO. One guy did the basket thing and when he FINALLY came back into line, I berated him in a friendly way. He actually apologized and offered me to go in front of him (I politely refused), and by the time we had reached checkout, we were buds and ready to go drink vodka together. I love a deal, fresh food, and interesting people. Jon's does not disappoint. read more

This is another store with which I have a love/hate relationship. You see, my mother - who also lives in Los Angeles, lives just outside of the store's CDA - that is, the store's Circular Delivery Area (okay, I just made that up). While I, as you might guess, live within said Jons Store CDA. So, for a good several years now (my husband says this is cute actually) every Tuesday night, I call my mother so that I can read her the Jons Store circular over the phone. "Pork Butt... $2.99..." She's gotta know what's on sale that week. She proceeds to school me on what she would and wouldn't buy and why. She points out what items are rip-offs and which items can be found for much cheaper at the "Persian Market" down the street. It's our bonding time. I guess the craziest part is that she has spent all this time telling me what's a good buy and what's not - yet, I have/never had ANY intention of EVER actually going to buy anything from this store! I know she would just die if she knew how often my husband and I are just picking up last minute items at Gelson's or Whole Foods on any given night. So, one day a few months ago, I decide to actually go and give it a whirl. And of course, as mothers often are - she's right. The produce area is not the run-down, dingy, nasty-smelling store I remember being dragged through in my youth. So, I have to give at least the produce area a thumbs up. I'm still not going to buy my milk, steaks, or fresh fish from this store, but you can get away from this place with a lot of produce and basic items like pita bread for a very nice price. And I just might find myself making the trip back up again soon - I mean, I might as well since every Tues. my mom's giving me the blow-by-blow personal shopper guide to this little gem! Jon's was a wonderful ethnic market up to a few years ago when they 'upgraded' and 'remodeled'. Maybe they didn't realize they had a good thing going? Possibly they were unaware that loyal customers drove many miles just to shop at this wonderful store specializing in European foods? Maybe Jon's hired a manager that decided Orange County was lacking yet another store that carries fresh salsa. Sadly, today a good portion of the store has gone the ubiquitous chorizo, queso fresco, tortilla route. Every aisle, including the produce, shows their push to attract Hispanics. Sure, they gain new customers but on the downside they continue losing the patronage of many, like myself, of European heritage. Why did Jon's change? Is Orange County lacking in Mexican stores? Most of the staff I've seen is now Hispanic. Were many previous employees let go because they weren't multi-lingual, as happens a lot in OC? Depressing state of affairs all around. Instead of Jon's Market maintaining their unique strengths, this once wonderful niche grocery sold out to OC's changing demographics. I think that move will eventually sink them. They will become neither a niche, nor a Hispanic market. I often still shop there because they have plenty European foods left, until these eventually get slowly phased out. I only spend a quarter of what I used to spend there before their 'remodeling'. I might be just one customer, but where I used to shop only there, now I scatter shop elsewhere. There's great vegetable prices at most Asian markets. On Edinger street nearby, there's a middle Eastern market that seems not to have caught the diversity bug. Also Sprouts seems mostly impervious for now and their meats are super. So many shopping choices, now that Jon's is not my one-and-only. read more

Finally I went there myself and called while standing right next to a person who was suppose to answer the phone, still, he didn't bother to pick up the phone. Anyways, this is less important.
