I happened upon this place when I was starving and in the area for an appointment. Now anytime I'm local, I am tempted to stop in! It's a lot of food for a very good price and I have not been disappointed yet. I skip my vegetarian tendencies when I come here and splurge. And they don't skimp on chicken, which is what I order. The tacos are huge. I have to also say that the service is very good and it is obvious that this place has a regular clientele. Go for the chicken soup and temper your expectation for the rest of the menu. This is basically what you will come to conclude both after reading others reviews and likely, after you go for a meal. And for those that call it ( the soup) simple and pretty much just a couple of ingredients..... that's the magic of it. That something so seemingly basic, could taste so delicious! Jorge's is tasty, and yes it's true about what all the white people say about the chicken soup; its delicious. Great chimi's and burritos too. But there is one thing in particular that bugs me. Im a regular and the owner recognizes me, be he still chooses to give me a hard time when I ask for more than two hot sauces for my burrito. He says stuff like " I let it slides today my fren, but it is estra uchually" Threatening to charge me for extra hot sauce. You gotta be kidding me, get the F outta here. We have been in 3 times over the last 5 years. Every time the guy is huffy and impatient. Today I was hoping it wouldn't be him. No such luck. Who goes to a place they've never (or rarely) been to and knows what they want in 30 seconds? We were more than happy to let people move ahead. Best tortilla chicken soup and most friendly people

This is easily the worst Mexican food I've had in San Diego county. They actually put thousand island dressing on their fish tacos. With so many good and great Mexican places in the area, I'm kind of shocked that this place has stuck around. read more

I have to give jorges a low score due to customer satisfaction. Like most people I prefer salsa with my meal. I usually order a fish burrito and crispy chicken taco. Both are pretty good. I did frequent this establishment, but no longer. The other day I was in there for the usual, upon picking up my order, I questioned the cashier if there was any salsa in the to go bag. His response was, "there is two". I asked him for three more, five salsas for a fish burrito and chicken taco not to extreeme I dont think. The owner was standing next to him and mumbled something in spanish to him. The cashiers reply to me was, " i will give you one" The fridge behind the counter is full of salsa, I didnt pursue this concern any further due to the fact there were some other patrons in there and did not want to make a scene and was late getting back to work. To my surprise, when I opened the bag, I only had three salsas. I was pissed. Call me petty, but die hard mexican food eaters like myself need hot sauce or salsa to complete the experiance! Needles to say, I will no longer be a customer at jorges. I find that the wait for food is too long as well. As far as the food, I have to say is pretty darn good. The size of the fish burritto is big. The fish always seams fresh, a make or break a fish burritto. I have not had the chicken soup and would love to if I was still a customer, but that wont happen. What happened to a customer is always right? If I needed to pay additional for more salsa than what is allowed, I dont have a problem with that. Filibertos nevers calls me on how much hot sauce i ask for, nor does Rauls Shack, or any other mexican food establishment I have ever been to. read more

Love this place. My case nurse at Scripps Encinitas told my husband and I about Jorge's and the chicken soup while I was in "labor" with my baby. The following night after I delivered my baby, I told my husband to go get some chicken soup for me... It was so amazing. It tasted so fresh and loved the yummy avocado in it. So disappointed!! I used to be a regular at Jorges, but my last (and I emphasize LAST) experience was just terrible. I ordered a California burrito which I've had before and always enjoyed, and noticed when I took it out of the bag that it wasn't hot. I bit into the burrito and realized the potatos and meat were cold (probably from the day before). I took a few more bites and had to throw it away. It was, by far, the worst California burrito I have ever had! I was sooo disappointed since I've always come here for a good, fresh, hot Mexican meal. Since I didn't have the time to return, I'm just going to count my losses and not return. This place deserves to be famous. Overall, good food with some great items like the soup. But Jorge is the taco nazi. He's nice if your on his good side and do things just right... don't ask too many questions, order with confidence, stand in line, don't forget that its cash only, etc. etc.... That's all fine and sort of entertaining. But the service is slow and I live nearby, so I decided I'd just start calling in my order and pick it up. But Jorge doesn't like to answer his phone, he'll let is ring and ring. Then you show up and your the only customer and have to wait 15 minutes for your food. Some days I like these quirky things, but on other days I don't. So three stars, overall a good place. read more

I only come to Jorge's (both locations) for their spicy chicken soup. It should come with a warning, because it is so addicting. I often have the soup twice a week if I'm within a 20 mile radius of Encinitas. The soup is the MOST authentic Mexican soup outside of Mexico. I have yet to find any other place in San Diego county that equals this amazing soup. read more

Expected more from this joint considering the high ratings. I think something must have gone wrong the night we visited. The enchilada sauce was so bitter - like someone accidentally dropped a load of ground cumin into it - that it was inedible. The soft tacos were average. Price is consistent with other local businesses. This is a very small hole-in-the-wall type place. read more

I am not sure I know what a Mexicatessen is, but what I do know is that Jorge's has some of the best chicken soup around. The soup is loaded with chicken, avocado, rice etc. and comes with a giant tortilla and salsa. I love the spicy version.. Cant speak to much else on the menu as I always get the soup. read more

"Hey, buddy! You want somethin' a' spicy?" Jorge is a legend, I love him. By far the best and freshest so cal Mexican food in the world. My boyfriend grew up here and will not eat anywhere else. His salsa is divine, so fresh and spicy. Crispy tacos are incredible. Chile Relleno is like a perfect harmony of chile, cheese and beans, it's like cake. Carnitas is so good, try it in the California burrito instead or carne asada, so tasty! Buy a big salsa to take home for tortilla chips (pick those up the street at El Nopilito). And not to forget, the amazing chicken soup, a' spicy, a must on a cold day or if you are not feeling well. Welcome to Mexican food heaven. read more

food is good but the owner is mean old grumpy man. The owner needs to learn about customer service and anger management. I asked a taco salad with no meat, no beans, add rice because I'm a vegetarian and the owner told me I'm very difficult. I don't think I asked for alot and ofcourse the price is same as taco salad with meat. The ower also yelled one of the kitchen person infront of everyone which was very very rude and I feel bad for them. I am probably the BIGGEST fan of Jorges spicy soup, on any given day you can catch me at any 3 of the locations... I absolutely love it and tell everyone I know. BUT if I had to pick a location between the 3 this would be my last choice. Although they are generally nice, my order has been messed up almost every time (8/10 times) I go in there... and its not a hard order small spicy soup with corn tortillas... I either get rung up for a large, get a non-spicy soup or flour tortillas. Which I am not real high maintenance and usually just accept what a get because its good either way. But the last time I brought in enough cash for a small and he rung me up for a large so I corrected him, he got super rude and pointed at the receipt which just printed out and said "it says large". I responded with I understand that but I asked for a small. And then had to further explain I didnt bring in my wallet and only brought enough money for a small, he unhappily changed it for me eventually. I have seen this happen to other customers where they dont get what they order and get a not very nice response when they bring it to the staffs attention but that was the first time it happened to me. Basically... my review is if you have a choice, hit up the one off el camino, its generally more crowded but rarely gets anything wrong. That being said if I had a choice between the santa fe location or NO soup Id be put up with the possibility of a not correct order and the risk of a little rudeness... THE SOUP is awesome.
