AVOID Jose Berrera at all costs. It has been over 8 years since my rhinoplasty, and I am still dealing with serious, ongoing issues because of his work. I had zero breathing problems before surgery, and now I struggle to breathe through my nose daily and have constant mucus discharge. This has negatively impacted my quality of life in a way I never anticipated. On top of that, the aesthetic result is extremely disappointing. My nose looks worse than it did before, which is unacceptable given the purpose of the procedure. What makes the situation even more frustrating is the complete lack of accountability. I've tried multiple times to address these issues, and his office still requires a consultation fee just to be seen--despite the fact that these problems are a direct result of his work. This has been an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience from start to finish. I would strongly urge anyone considering him to look elsewhere. read more

It's been a year since I got my nose job, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The entire experience--from the consultation to the recovery--was smooth and reassuring. I documented my appearance for a week after the operation and I had swelling and no bruising and very minimal pain which was a pleasant surprise. This change has not only enhanced my appearance but also boosted my confidence significantly. I'm grateful for the skill of Dr. Barrera and the positive impact this decision has had on my life. First off, I came to this practice knowing exactly what I needed and was crystal-clear as to what I've had done successfully in the past. I laid it all out for the Doc and his PA. Nothing was left unsaid. Dr Barrera opted to go a different route, knowing my particular skin type might have issues. I trusted he knew what was best. I was wrong. My tear-trough filler bubbled on one eye, as it was put entirely too superficially. I waited a month for it to calm down, but it didn't, so I scheduled a revisit to have the product dissolved. When I went back, the whole thing felt a bit contemptuous. It was clear I was having an issue, even after I went out of my way to inform him of how to avoid it in the first place. I was taken to a public space amongst his employees to be shown before and after images of my face. Instead of apologizing for the issue, he began to show me what he did right with the other eye. It felt like he was grandstanding for his crew. It was silly, quite frankly. I then reminded him of our chat before he did the initial procedure, how I had made it clear as to my history of treatment and how it was always done to result in a near-perfect appearance. I also said that wasn't done in this instance. So, long story even longer: He injected a *tiny* bit of Hyaluronidase. Gave my eye a massage hard enough to blacken it. Sent me on my way. A few weeks later, it's still not looking right. For the time being, I'm flying back to Dallas to get work done at my usual practice, but will ultimately find a suitable Doc in San Antonio. I can't recommend Dr Barrera, as his demeanor changed considerably when he realized that he didn't handle this correctly. Apologies for the lengthy review but I feel I need to explain my rating. I gave one star for the facility always being clean and nice as well as the staff being kind and professional. I gave another star because Dr. Barrera attempted to fix his first surgery on me. I have been a patient with Dr. Barrera since September 2021. He and his staff told me the day of my first rhinoplasty that I was the happiest patient they'd ever had. This was because I was finally about to change my life after 10 years of saving up money to have this surgery done. Surgery and recovery both went well, and I couldn't wait to get the cast off and see my new nose. Well, the day comes, and my cast comes off and I immediately wanted him to put the cast back on to hide this horrible nose on my face. He recognized my fears and reassured me that this is ONLY swelling and there is no need to panic after one week. My nose was not only swollen but severely crooked. I had high hopes and faith in Dr Barrera, that in time, this would change and become the nose I wanted. Well, that never happened. A year after my first rhinoplasty Dr Barrera tells me I need to have another surgery to fix my crooked nose. I agreed desperately, after all this time of him telling me it would be fine, he acknowledged it wasn't. I felt heard and relieved. We discussed thoroughly what my next surgery would entail and everything about my current nose that needed to be fixed. I felt confident he would do it and I would finally have the nose I had been waiting so long for. He told me I would have to pay for anesthesia again but that the remaining cost would be covered by his practice. GREAT! I was so happy to not have to pay for a reconstructive rhinoplasty! Until the day of the surgery and I am told I must pay $2,000 for a rib graft he is now planning to add. Anyways, I went ahead with the surgery thinking I had nothing to lose. Surgery and recovery both went great. I am now 10 months post op from my second rhinoplasty with Dr Barrera. My nose is still crooked, and I am not happy with it. He did a series of steroid injections in my nose to decrease swelling and scar tissue, but it is my opinion this did not work. On my last appointment he mentioned me having to have another surgery to fix these issues. Now, he says he is happy and satisfied with the way my nose looks and doesn't seem to care that I am not. Not only do I have swelling and scarring but I have a bump on my nose still and the tip is still drooping and there is no symmetry. He told me he tried his best and I do believe him. I just do not think he is capable of giving me what I want and asked and paid for. It is very discouraging to pay so much money to STILL hate the thing you paid to change. I have been to every single one of my follow-up appointments and have done everything by the book and as told by Dr Barrera. This is not an emotional post, as I have waited a long time to finally post this as I feel I am stuck with this awful nose now because I cannot afford to pay someone else to fix this. read more

This is a terrible place. The manager is rude, the costs are ridiculous, and Dr. Barrera doesn't seem too concerned about patient care. He spends hardly any time in the room with you. You're probably better off spending your money at any of the other facial plastic surgeon clinics in town...or at Subway. The other doctor, Dr. Jandali, is very nice and the only positive aspect about this sorry excuse for a clinic. They don't have many employees walking around. I'm sure there's a reason for that. Also, $250 for COVID-19 testing?! Gross. Way to take advantage of people during a pandemic. Even without insurance, you can get it done anywhere else for a cheaper price. I bet they'll respond saying I'm not in their system and this is libel when I'm just expressing my freedom of speech. Maybe they're just not smart enough to realize some people wish to remain anonymous. TO DR. BARRERA'S RESPONSE: I do not appreciate being accused of being the same writer of another negative review when there are obvious differences. Your responses are unprofessional. You accuse people of libel, not being in your system, being the same person, etc. All these accusations are ways of negating bad reviews. For a long time I knew I needed to have surgery on my nose to help me breathe. I put it off because I saw family members go through it and was terrified. Then came the day I couldn't put it off anymore because I could not breathe at all - my airway was completely restricted and I had to breathe out of my mouth. My doctor recommended Dr. Barrera and I am eternally grateful to him. The whole process was so smooth. I had a lot of things done medically as well as rhinoplasty. The staff makes me feel like family greeting me by name every time I come by. I had no bruising, minimal swelling, and didn't need any narcotics. Dr. Barrera and his team are amazing! Earlier this year, I decided to move forward with my plans for a rhinoplasty. I had a consultation with another surgeon and didn't feel confident with what I saw/heard and started getting nervous. I had my second consultation with Dr. Barrera and knew instantly I wanted him to do my surgery. Everyone in the office is so nice and professional - honorable mentions for Jennifer and Dr. Lujan!! They were so kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. And Dr. Barrera really listened to my concerns and took time to explain his method and what my options were. I bombarded him with questions and concerns and he thoughtfully addressed each one and put my mind at ease. After my consultation, I felt 100% comfortable moving forward. If you're thinking about doing anything to your face, GO TO DR.BARRERA!! I cannot stress that enough. There are plastic surgeons and then there are facial specialists that specifically work on facial features. Not only does he care about his patients, their needs and goals but the office staff is just as caring. I'm not new to having medical procedures (ACL reconstruction, broken elbow, broken ankle etc.) thanks to growing up playing multiple sports but I'm so glad I chose Dr. Barrera to complete my rhinoplasty. I did a lot of research throughout the San Antonio/Austin area and at 22 years old, having a natural resulting procedure is extremely important to me. Results that not only refine your facial structure but enhance it in the best way is what Dr. Barrera blessed me with. I had my rhinoplasty and septoplasty on March 17 and completed my monthly post op today. My surgery wasn't bad at all and truly, the only days that were super painful were the first two of course but after that I started backing off my pain medication and took Tylenol extra strength. A doctor literally broke my nose and all I took was Tylenol. If that doesn't speak for his work along with my result pictures themselves, I don't know what will. Throughout the entire process I have been met with a smile and great hospitality. Also, since my procedure happened to land on my birthday, they were kind enough to give me a trial size Vitamin C Serum, an eyeshadow/contour pallette and a few other goodies that are valued worth at least $50. I found Dr. Barrera on the RealSelf web site where he has phenomenal reviews. I can certainly understand why now that I have been to his office. I went in for what I thought was a simple cyst on my neck. He knew immediately that this cyst, that I thought could be taken care of in 5 minutes, required a much more detailed look. I am going for a CT today with fingers crossed it will be the nothing I had hoped for initially. I had been struggling to breathe through my nose for years, and I finally decided to see a physician for this issue. I found Dr. Barrera online and saw he had great reviews, and after meeting with him and going through the surgery, I understand why. He was wonderful at listening to my needs and worries about having surgery and made me feel very comfortable. The only minor downside was that I feel as though his staff could have described the surgery costs & how insurance affects it in a clearer way so that we could all be on the same page about that. Despite that, Dr. Barrera is a wonderful & caring doctor, and since the surgery, I can breathe a lot better and can sleep better, run more efficiently, etc. I recommend him to anyone who is looking for a professional and caring ENT/plastic surgeon. read more

I went in for laser hair removal on my legs. I suffer from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in my arms and holding a razor can be difficult. I made Dr. Barrera aware of this and he said he could help me. I received burns instead. Dr. Barrera was supposed to perform the procedure but turned it over to a doctor who has since left his clinic. The treatment was excruciating but they kept going. I returned three days later as I was still in a lot of pain and was blistering. Dr. Barrera examined me and pronounced my condition "normal" and sent me away without any follow up visits or treatment. I went to a dermatologist who prescribed multiple antibiotic ointments to minimize scarring and warned me to stay out of the pool and sun for the rest of the summer. I received 1st and 2nd degree burns and have some scarring suggesting some 3rd degree burns. I would stay far away from this "medical" practice. read more

I meet Dr. Barrera on July 20, 2015, while seeking a plastic surgeon for a face lift. I had done my research and had consultations with several other doctors before deciding to go with Dr. Barrera. Dr. Barrera is a Triple Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Which I have found out that really doesn't mean anything. He had suggested a deep plain face and neck lift to get the results that I wanted. After surgery, when the swelling went down I could tell there was something not right. Instead of pulling my face up, it looks like he pulled it down. I know frown permanently and I'm not sure what he did to my jaw but I could not open my mouth wide enough to even bit a sandwich. I feel like my jaw is pulled back. I also snore like a freight train and did not before the surgery. Which is not something that should happen after a face lift. Under my chin now looks worse and now I have what is called a cobra neck and I also have pixie ears. He also did my upper eyes and fat grafting. The fat grafting, he was to inject the fat into the marionette lines. Which I guess he forgot where the fat grafting was to be injected. He put it the fat around my eyes. Which we never discussed the fat to be injected around my eyes. When I asked about why he injected it around my eyes and not the marionette lines he said he thought it would be better there. He also said, well you know I was doing that for free. That shouldn't matter if it was free or not it was something he said he would do for me. I went in for my three-week post-op appointment and mentioned something was not right. His response was to wait for my five-week post-op appointment and results should be better. At my five-week post-op appointment, he could not tell the difference between my before and after pictures. He kept saying that my before surgery picture was the post-op pictures. I had to correct and show him that was not right and I looked worse than my before picture. He was adamant that he made me look 10 years younger, not true. And that he did nothing wrong. He also suggested that I needed more surgery. He was dismissive and unsympathetic towards me at this point. I thought he lost his mind after I spent $13,295.00 and needed more surgery. I did ask him for my money back so I could find another doctor that could fix what he did. He told me that he couldn't do that because he already paid everybody for the surgery. Since my last consolation, I have seen four more Board Certified Plastic surgeons and all have said that I need a revision of my face and neck lift. One surgeon suggested that I pull the hospital records to see what actually was done. All surgeons said, what are in my records that Dr. Barrera wrote is not what they see was done with the results I have. I know that Dr. Barrera's office will probably respond to this review, like they respond to all reviews, saying that they did nothing wrong and unrealistic expectations. I was 55, nonsmoker when this was done. I do not recommend going to Dr. Barrera for a neck or face lift. I have attached some before and after pictures. The first picture was taken at his office pre op and the following are the ones I took 5-month post-op and 1 1/2 year post-op. I went back to see him and he did offer me less than half my money back. I told him no I needed all the money back where I could get the surgery I need to be fixed. With Dr. Barrera making an offer to me mean he it admitting he did something wrong. I looked that up. I did sent him demand letter which he did not answers and tried to go to mediation with him. He declined the mediation. Now that it's now been 2 years and he knows that I can sue him, he not going to do anything. Please spread the work about him to other if they are looking into him for surgery. My daughter had 2 erbium laser treatments at $900 each and 1 Co2 treatment at the hospital for $3,500, Dr Barrera assured her acne scars would be much better, perhaps gone but they're not, much to the contrary. They actually look worse. We did everything he said to do. We discussed with him afterward, but he's dismissive unsympathetic and uncaring. He said, wait a year, that is how long it may take for her to see progress. It's been a year and as her mother, I say her acne scars look worse. I don't know about these people here saying he is good, we trusted him and my daughter is having to live with these acne scars now the rest of her life because we were confident in the wrong person. She's petrified to trust anyone else, and she holds her hands up to her face all the time, it's so sad to see her this way, and it's because of this doctor. read more
