We came in for our monthly girls margarita nights. It was very busy when you first walked in and the door is kind of weird. It's like a fabric walk-through with a sign taped on it says yes, we are open. And then you keep walking through and there's a middle area with a bunch of boots and then a more open seating area in the third section. We were kind of separated from everyone at the service wasn't great. We never got water when I got there. The server never approached me or asked if I wanted anything and I had arrived much later than everyone else. They only took our food order and she never came back We've been trying new Mexican restaurants every month to find our favorite and just to keep trying local places. I don't think I would come back to this one. The service was just pretty poor and the food wasn't spectacular. It wasn't bad but it just didn't stand out. read more

Our first time here but won't be our last. Been wanting to try this for a while from a friends recommendation. The food service and atmosphere were all great. Last night my wife and her sister had a hankering for some Mexican food. I suggested Jose'peños. They were not disappointed. The place was very clean and very busy. We were instantly greeted and drink orders were taken. We placed an order for queso fundido. That was delicious. Drinks came out as expected and orders for entrees taken. I got the Chicken Torta and it was awesome! My wife got her usual chicken quesadilla and her sister got street tacos. They could not stop talking about how good the food was on the way back home. Ordered take out on a Friday evening in November, picked this restaurant because they were near to our house, good reviews and they had carnitas with corn tortillas. The food was ready when I got there. The atmosphere is very ceremonial within the restaurant. I had fajitas, we shared chips with guacamole, the other parties in our group ordered shredded chicken tacos, carnitas corn tortillas and a shrimp burrito. The chips and guacamole were great including the salsa that came with it. All were gone by the end of the evening. My fajitas were tender and flavorful. The shredded chicken tacos were dry. The food is the best authentic Mexican food that I have had up in they area while visiting. Had both lunch and dinner at the restaurant and tried multiple entrees both times. The ambiance and the service is great. Definitely recommend them to anyone who is seeking authentic food. The owners and staff are passionate about the customer experience. The ambiance is always clean, friendly and welcoming. TVs show local sporting events or Mexican sporting events depending upon what's available at the time. The music is pleasant and not too loud. The typical restaurant clatter is quiet enough to have a conversation, but loud enough to drown out nearby customers conversation. Overall it's my favorite restaurant. First time here and we loved it. Quaint super clean restaurant with a friendly attentive staff and a delicious menu. They have weekday lunch specials and happy hour specials also, kid friendly and a full bar serving up a delicious Margaritas . My choice tonight was the shrimp enchiladas with rice and beans. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and had a wonderful flavor that was only enhanced by the cream sauce of the filling , the rice was not what you typically think of with Mexican food but I liked this rice better than standard rice. For National Taco Day I chose a selection of street tacos--one each of steak, chicken, and pork. The meats arrived in small, soft flour tortillas wrapped in slightly crunchier ones. All were tasty but I found a bit of the salsa really punched up the flavors. A small bowl of red pinto beans nicely complemented the tacos. read more

JP has been very consistent in the quality of their margaritas, and just depends on what flavor you're in the mood for. As for the menu, we tried several menu items from their soups to combination plates and their signature dishes all with a high level of quality. The staff is professional and always available should you need anything . It's a large restaurant and lots of seating for small or large groups. We are semi regulars at El Azteca and noticed that Jose'penos was close by and also participates in AAdvantage Dining, so since we had just been at Azteca, we tried Jose'penos. It was Easter weekend and our main, twice weekly place was closed. The first thing I noticed was that the sign on the door regarding Easter Sunday closure was worded identically to the one at El Azteca, which made me wonder about common ownership. Also, they tout "street tacos" as does the Azteca. I have learned that pronouncing that they are, usually means they are not. We were there for light lunch, so Ms T predictably ordered a couple of ground beef tacos and I ordered eggs. This time I went with Huevos Divorcados so I could sample two sauces. Ms T immediately did not care for the ground beef seasoning and gave me a bite, saying it was unusually sweetened and I agreed. I also thought it needed a little salt. My huevos were not remarkable. There was no salt in any of the food; the eggs, the frijoles or the rice. The salsas on the eggs were OK, but not remarkable. They were served on corn tortillas that were not fried per normal and turned to a gooey mess that I could not bring myself to eat. The best thing on the table was the salsa that came with the chips and that was just average. As I said, we visit El Azteca occasionally because it is AAdvantage Dining. We thought we had another one at Jose'penos but were disappointed. It is a cute name, but we will stick to El Azteca as long as they participate. read more

Not a horrible place but there are better options out there. The service was good. The food didn't take long, and it was ok. The queso we got was cold when it showed up at our table and the fajita I got was 90% chicken and onions (see the picture). The chicken on it was good though and they gave me this house-made hot sauce (at my request) that was phenomenal. My wife and kids didn't have any issues with their food and said it was "ok". My margarita was good. Again, not the best but not horrible. The inside of the restaurant was nicely decorated but it needs some serious TLC. Several of the booth tables, including ours, had boards sticking out from them where they haphazardly tried to repair the connection to the wall. The bathroom was nasty enough that my teenage sons, who have some of the worst hygiene habits I know of, didn't even want to use it. And I'll give JPs the benefit of the doubt on that one. Who knows what the person before us did in there? It didn't make a good impression when we were there though. All in all... there are worse places out there but there are better ones too. And unfortunately I'm not likely to go back here when there are better Mexican places to choose from nearby. read more

First visit here. Stopped in for an early snack and dinner on Saturday; no wait for a table before 6p. We enjoyed the friendly, attentive service plus filling foods. For restaurant Mexican food, I think this was a solid place, but with added quality customer service, I gave a 4-star! Also had a full bar selection and HH specials. Started with their version of Queso Fundido, a warm and tasty melted cheese sauce with roasted Poblano peppers, chorizo and served with warm tortillas. Am a fan of this dip and this one had plenty of meat, mildly spicy flavor, perfect to roll up in a tortilla or dip with crunchy tortilla chips. It was nice to have a bowl of freshly made salsa to add as well. We decided to share a 3-item combo dinner. Ordered Chicken flautas, Chile Relleno and Chimichanga with Carnitas pork (this was an extra charge but worth it). The Chimichanga was the favorite, lots of chunky tender pork in a mini-Chimichanga wrap, deep fried and topped with melted queso cheese. Next I liked the fresh flautas, shredded chicken rolled in tortillas and flash fried to golden brown. My least favorite was the Chile Relleno, as it had a heavier batter than I usually prefer, but the taste was OK. Dinner entree came with rice and beans, plus a small side of sour cream ... next time I'd add a side of Guacamole to enjoy this dish even more. Overall, a very good meal experience. Enjoy! read more

Finally got Mexican food last week after being in Missouri for like 2 months. Mexican food in New York is 100% not the same so was excited to have the comforts of home so to speak. Saw the margarita menu + later hours on a weekend night and this place was it. Immediately started with a cucumber margarita and my best friend had the paloma. Wow the paloma is huge- like 40oz (ish) huge. Mine was smaller but it did the trick and was absolutely phenomenal and rather sophisticated for a local mexican joint I thought. Drinks are a very much yes here. Since we checked in we got a free cheese dip so got that, obviously cant go wrong there. For my entree I got the combo platter with chimichanga and tamale with the standard rice and beans- hers the combo with chimi and enchilada. My brother had the enchilada plate and my boyfriend got the lava rock dish- basically a hot black mini tower with sizzling fajita like food. All of it was phenomenal and fresh. Service was great and the food came out in less than 10 minutes. Cannot say enough good things- food was great, drinks were awesome, service was perfect. Prices were decent as well. I ordered through a delivery service and my order was incorrect. Instead of three carnitas street tacos I received two very mushy shredded chicken tacos. As well, I ordered three entrees and they gave me a tiny order of salsa with a tiny half bag of chips, an order for one. There is no option to order extra chips and salsa. I've been in Southern California for most of my life. Moving to Missouri was a shock to the palate, as I experienced some of the worst... hold on, it wasn't here... Mexican food is ever had. Jose Peños was one of my last ditch efforts. Three other places had grey beans, bland food, and seemed more like the local watering hole. But enough about them... walking in the door, a few aromas hit me that were the right thing. I started to salivate and noted some awards on the wall. I dismissed those, no offense, as the competition wasn't up to or yet. Alan was my waiter (and apparently a member of the family). His infectious enthusiasm started off the process well. I ordered something that appeared to be a good choice, steak a la tampiquena, and awaited the food. The salsa was on the very mild side, but had a nice flavor. I was getting hopeful... and then the food arrived. The dish was full of flavor, with different but compatible vibrant flavors peppering the plate. I was planning on checking the refried beans, but received great black beans instead. No matter... a quick glance over at the neighbors table had me excited... Alan checked in and I asked for a side of the refried beans and soon they came out as well. A luscious rich brown, as they are supposed to be, with a flavor and smell that reminded me of my many meals in SoCal. I had already wrote off the three other Mexican restaurants, and two received scathing reviews. Jose Peños not only beats them hands down, it's a place where I know I will go for comforting Mexican food that reminds me of my many experiences in SoCal, Rosarito Beach and other spots south of the border. Alan noted at the close of my meal, and after my compliments that his mother (and other family) was the source of the recipes. This passion of Alan's is great and I will be back for more. Stopped into to have dinner with my husband at Jose Penos. Service was great! Ample chips and salsa to accompany our margarita. The margarita was a bit on the sour side but refreshing. The enchilada Suiza was excellent- filled with shredded white meat covered in a delicious green sauce, beans and rice were very good and fresh! Overall the meal was excellent I would recommend to all! They do a nice job with the social distancing, spaced tables, wait staff was in masks and hand sanitizer available for patrons as they entered the establishment. read more

We drive by this place every time I take the wife to work and we're always looking for new favorite places. I gave it two stars even though it should have one because we won't be going back. The food was okay. I had Diablo shrimp. They were not diablo at all and there were only six shrimp in a sea of bland cream sauce. The wife got carnitas (her go-to Mexican) and was not disappointed. But here's my question. If you are a waiter at a Mexican restaurant, how can you forget a margarita order not once but TWICE? I never did get the F'ing margarita.
