Beautiful scenic location right in the middle of a bustling north wales. The grounds are manicured and well maintained. We dined in and were seated in the main dining area in a room next to the bar. We did not have a reservation and the hostess was kind enough to give us a table. We ordered soup of the day ( mushroom soup), boneless wings and a salad. Food was good. Just finished my first meal , a buffet dinner party, under the new management. I had very high expectations due to my past experiences here but I am feeling a little disappointed. I had a little bit of everything, steak, chicken, salmon, ravioli and ziti. Worst first, the steak was tough but tasty, ravioli was not good , very dry, chicken was pretty good and the salmon was excellent. Deserts weren't quite up to expectations either. Small bites were just ok , cannoli's were also just ok and the cheesecake was very good. Service was great but overall I feel it wasn't as good as past dinner parties. It is still very good and I can't wait to go back to the pub and hopefully the dinner service is as good as in the past. read more

Visited in middle of May at noon, hopefully things have improved: The hostess was a snit because we requested another table, the room was empty. Mrs. had the filet, very good. Mr. had the crab cake, one of the worst ever, over cooked & salty. Had Julia ever returned after serving, it would have been sent back. Where did she go? Not to be seen until the delivering the check. Finally, if you are over 5'7" the is no leg room under the tables. We should have dined in the town of Ambler. read more

I stayed in a room at the Ambler Inn on May 4th, 5th and 6th, 2026. I also made luncheon arrangements at the restaurant for a funeral party of 24 people on May 6th. What was great; 1.) the grounds are beautifully landscaped with huge trees and flowering bushes, 2.) there are numerous porches, patios, and benches all around for impromptu gatherings, 3.) the luncheon menu had very good choices and the prices were not too expensive, 4.) the waitresses were kind and hard working, 5.) the decor is Williamsburg, colonial, and charming What was not great; 1.) the website says full country breakfast, but that is not true- things have changed-but the website did not get updated. There is only breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays in the hotel restaurant, not during the week. 2.) the website mentions various room types- queen, 2 queens, king, 2 queen deluxe, etc etc. I booked a 2 queen deluxe room, directly through the hotel, but somehow I ended up with just one queen bed. The lady in the registration office was very nice, but there were no 2-queen rooms available. And also, the queen bed in our room was saggy. 3.) there is no refrigerator or microwave or coffee machine in the room, also the restaurant was not open, and so we had trouble finding coffee in the morning. We went to the registration office, and that is when we found out there is no free "full country breakfast" as advertised. Instead, they had "grab and go" snacks, and the restaurant does not open until lunch. Also the coffee machine in the office was out of order. We had to search for a breakfast place nearby and since we are not familiar with the area, this took a while. Even though there were some problems with the bed and getting breakfast, overall this IS a place you should go to because it is truly a park-like setting, and the decor is charming. I would recommend that you bring a small coffee maker and a cooler for your room. read more

We came back to our first date to celebrate our 10 year anniversary only to leave disappointed and dissatisfied . Our waitress never introduced herself, didn't check on us after our meals were served, the menu was mediocre , Deciding to order the best items on the menu we ended up with mushy tasteless risotto along with the smallest Chilean sea bass that was over seared and crumbled in the middle. The filet was the star of the show although with this experience tonight will probably keep us from coming again. read more

The The Joseph Ambler Inn is our local go-to for a celebration. Tonight was an early Father's Day dinner. We had the Lollipop Lamb Chops as an appetizer, followed by Scallops with Sweet Potatoes and Chilean Sea Bass on a bed of Crabmeat Risotto. Dessert was a Banana Cheesecake and their Keoke Coffee. Delicious! They gradually rotate their menu, so they always have something new to offer. Location is an old Pennsylvania farm that's been converted. Service was efficient and cordial. First time dining here after driving by so many times! Made a reservation for a Saturday night, the place was pretty busy. Love the rustic ambiance. We were seated in the main dining area, note that this area is a bit noisy. There are smaller side dining areas that would likely be quieter if that is what you like. Menu is not huge and there were no off menu specials. First treat was the table bread served which was excellent, the whipped seasoned butter also great. To start we went with the soup de jour (creamy potato) and the caprese salad. Both starters were awesome. For entrees, we selected the scallops and the chicken dish. These entrees were absolutely scrumptious! Scallops seared perfectly and super sweet. Chicken was moist and flavorful, the accompanying risotto was divine. We skipped dessert this time but will definitely leave room next time. Service was slow at first but definitely got fully on track as we progressed. This was a classy meal in a nicely appointed dining room. We are happy to add Joseph Ambler to our rotation!! read more

What a beautiful evening celebrating our 53rd anniversary. Driving in to the parking lot we commented how pretty the trees looked all lit up. Our server Tina was wonderful and made sure that we got our complimentary dessert for our special celebration. The venison was exceptional and the three cheese polenta was the best that I have ever tasted. Kudos to the new owners. We have been faithful customers, even having our daughter's wedding there. The inn was fairly priced for a two night stay, especially when utilizing their anniversary discount, but the room wasn't clean at all. As in someone literally used my ice bucket as an ash tray. Loved finding a roach in it (leaf, not bug - see picture) and it definitely didn't make me gag out of concern for what else wasn't cleaned in my room. Tons of dead little bugs and moths in the bathroom as well, dust on the window sill, etc. I'd get it if there was some since it was a wooded area but I was gagging at the amount. My only interaction with the people who worked in the hotel were for check-in and check-out and they were pleasant. Also the doors to the building are left unlocked (the door to your specific room is locked) in case that's something of concern to you. While I wasn't particularly concerned for my safety in the area, it did take me aback to see that there aren't two keys given for the front door and your room. Anyone could just be sitting in the communal areas if they've driven on the property - there's no sort of security to get in and out. read more

One year anniversary date with my boo at the JAI. Started with Alexa's Frosted Sugar Cookie - Amaretto, Vanilla Vodka, Bailey's Irish Cream and it tastes just as good as it looks. Moved on to the Mixed Green Sald which was spot and a great value, as it is enough for two people to split. Bring out the Clams! These are in an amazing garlicy, butter sauce with small pieces of tomato and garlic spread throughout. Sorry for the no picture but didn't want to break the mood of just a perfect setting and experience. Move out of the way and bring me the Main! The main course we split was Panko Crusted Maryland Crab Cake, Saffron Basmati Rice, House Vegetables in a Vin Blanc Sauce. At first, I thought the portion size was small, however the quality of the ingredients made up for there being only one crab cake in the main. The carrot was spread with some granules of coarse salt, baked, which made it soft and overflowing with flavor, my girlfriend stated this has to be the best carrot we have ever had when dining out and I agree whole heartedly. The rice came out piping hot and underneath had a beautiful creamy sauce. Last vegetable that rounded out the meal was a handful of crisp string beans. We ordered the most exotic dessert on the menu imo being the Samosa bread pudding which had a lot going on with it however it came out with chocolate in it and on it which was not detailed on the dessert description meaning, unfortunately we could not try as the gf is allergic to chocolate. In its place we capped the meal off splitting one more glass of Alexa's Frosted Sugar Cookie drink. Went with friends for lunch today. Server not friendly; actually seemed almost annoyed that she had to be there. We ordered the soup as an appetizer. Forty minutes later, no soup yet. Had to look for someone to ask about it. Several minutes later our server showed up to "apologize " and tell us they were out of thst soup and were serving a substitute. We informed her that we didn't want the substitute. We were not asked if that was acceptable. After another 20 minutes, our entrees had not yet arrived. Again, we went looking for someone to find out what was happening. All we got was an "apology". Hostess, or whatever she was, was told we were leaving in 5 minutes if no entrees were served. No food arrived. We asked for the check for the beverages that we did get; more apologies and the comment from our server that 3 orders were ready and they were just waiting for one more item. After waiting over an hour at this point, they should have had everything together! The restaurant was fairly empty by this time, so what was the issue??! We're all former restauranteurs and know what needs to be done to have a successful restaurant,and this is NOT IT! How to ruin a once great place. Bring back the former owners. Carol K. read more

To be specific, this review is for the restaurant and bar experience at the Joseph Ambler Inn. I visited on a weekday for happy hour and was extremely happy with my experience. The bartender (Austin) was friendly and just attentive enough to let me enjoy both the ambience and the atmosphere of the bar and patrons, many of which were clearly regulars. He knew at least five patrons by name and asked about their kids and vacations. . .this is a wonderful local spot that needs nothing but perhaps more business. The food was well-prepared, cooked as I requested, and the selection of beverages and food is quite good--well worth a drive for out-of-towners. I visited in the late fall and the leaves were spectacular still. But even better was the experience of a few local brews, some good pub fare (and better-than-fair pricing and quality), and locals who know where to go. Five stars, no question about it. read more

This was my first time here and had heard good things. It's atmosphere is rustic and charming. The old stone house and wooden floors is warm and welcoming. The hostess immediately seated us in a semi private room and our waitress quickly stabled our table with a wedge to keep it from rocking. We found the starters menu somewhat limited and not geared towards sharing. I tried a cup of the beef barley soup. It was nice and hot but different than I expected as it wasn't very hearty and had a vast assortment of vegetables. Not much beef at all. The bread was a nice warm assortment along with a decorative dish of butter. My wife chose the Chilean sea bass and I had the NY strip steak. She was very pleased with her perfectly cooked fish served over crab risotto with a pea sauce. My steak was a bit overcooked but good. Not great. The person behind us commented on there steak being overcooked as well. Our waitress was delightful, attentive, and pleasant. She was the best part of the experience. The teenage boy who brought plates , silverware, and bread was epic. He was pol, but dropped every plate and item onto the table. Even slamming your water glass down after filling it. He dropped my steak knife down in the middle the area where my plate would go. It became comical. He was kind, he just didn't understand that he was basically a bull in a china shop. read more

Went for a 1PM lunch and the food was very good. Three of the four of us ordered the fixed price option and everyone was satisfied. I had the shrimp appetizer and they were four nice sized shrimp, served two connected together. It was a creative looking presentation! The crab cake entree, while not meeting my standard of NOT finding the filler because of too much crab meat, was very flavorful. The crème brûlée was good. The server didn't seem particularly happy or friendly but I didn't feel too harshly toward her because this was my first experience with her. Also given the restaurant hiring challenges generally I'm more forgiving. read more

I stayed here on a business trip. This Inn has a very rustic and historic ambiance. Very quaint grounds for strolling. I was at the Thomas Edison house which didn't have an elevator and I had to lug my luggage up the very narrow creaky staircase. I could live with that, but the deal-breaker for me is that the buildings are completely open for anyone's entry which made it feel very unsafe. And like many say, the place could use some good sprucing up. Not much in the way of breakfast, and I did not check out their restaurant this time around. The stay wasn't the best. I'll be looking for an alternative the next time. read more

FOOD ONLY REVIEW I was here for a repass and the meal certainly put everyone in better spirits. The bar selection certainly helped! Lots of nice scotches available. The Inn looks absolutely beautiful and the restaurant itself is near the back of the property. The food was pretty good. Everyone had the same meal - piece of chicken, piece of steak, and veggies. There was also pie for dessert. All of it tasted great, which is impressive when you consider the amount of people there. I would definitely recommend eating here. read more

All the appetizers were delicious- I particularly enjoyed the tuna. For a main course, I ordered the Chilean sea bass which was excellent! It was served on top of crab risotto. We had planned to stay two nights and left because it was too dirty to stay there. The bed was hard as a rock. The room we had was loud because of the nearby road. The "Free breakfast" was a sub par pre-packaged sausage sandwich you had to microwave in the tiny lobby and a small basket of dry,off brand muffins and some apples. Went to this restaurant post tour for possible venue for sons wedding. We ordered from the price fix menu. I ordered Caesar salad requested anchovies, but none provided. I also ordered the crab cake. I can only speak of my meal. My meal was excellent! I would ordered this meal again. Dessert was also provided with price fix meal. We each ordered one of each except for the ice cream. All the dessert were excellent. The warm pumpkin bread pudding was to die for. I highly recommended this restaurant. I highly suggest you make reservations. We had reservations. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. Our server, Alexa, who seemed nice at first, was incredibly inattentive. I can understand that on a busy night, and admittedly, I drink a lot of iced tea and need frequent refills, so I can be, admittedly tough to manage. But this was not the case here, it was 25 minutes between visits from the initial stop to a return to check on us. My wife ordered the champagne chicken, I ordered the salmon. Two Champagne Chickens came out. When we informed her, she said with some attitude, that I'd ordered the chicken. The word chicken never came out of my mouth. Perhaps when I said "I'll have the salmon", she heard "I'll have the same". I was certainly not prepared for a server to become combative and insist that I'd ordered something I hadn't. It was messed up, a simple, "I misheard, I'll have this fixed." would have been fine. But to tell me I ordered something I didn't, especially when I'm already unhappy about the issue, and about the lack of attentiveness was unacceptable. A manager never came to discuss the issue with us, my wife was finished her meal before my replacement arrived, and quite honestly, the salmon was dry. I left incredibly disappointed at the entirety of the experience. I can't imagine ever returning here. Stay far away. read more

We visited this establishment for Mother's Day brunch and enjoyed it. We decided to visit this establishment last night for an anniversary dinner. The food was salty and the cheese plate was lacking variety and the prosciutto had a very odd putting flavor. The steak was delicious but mashed potatoes were drenched in salt. They do not have a kids menu which was shocking. To top off the lack luster food experience the service was HORRIBLE!! They do not come around and refill soft drinks and once you flag somebody down it takes at least 10 min before the request is completed. They are quick to remove plates when finished. read more

It's possible we caught this restaurant on a bad day - Mother's Day brunch. But I absolutely would NOT recommend this restaurant. We made special plans to take our family out for Mother's Day brunch at 10:30 am. The menu was ridiculous - there was literally one breakfast item and everything else was a dinner entree (personally I was not in the mood for clams at 10:30 am in the morning). In addition to the ridiculous nature of the Mother's Day brunch menu, the quality of the food was actually quite bad. Cheese board was stale and tasted like it was sitting around in the back of the refrigerator for a few months (the fig jam looked and tasted like silly putty), the only brunch item offered was cold clammy stuffed french toast, which not only lacked in flavor but was stale and cold by the time it came to the table. It was quite a bizarre experience and sadly, probably the worst dining experience our family has had in the Philadelphia region. read more

Joseph Ambler is the perfect place for your wedding! The staff is amazing. Friendly, attentive and they know the wedding business. They made our wedding enchantingly beautiful. We have been planning with them for more than a year. We planned outdoor but Tropical Storm Ophelia had other plans. They didn't miss a beat. Ceremony inside, we traveled to another house for cocktail hour and back to the main banquet hall for reception. Jamie, Dana and Joe are amazing. Carol we met the night before and she was perfect. The food is excellent. Like really good. The bartenders handled our crowd to keep the liquor flowing and they even made people say the signature drink "rear naked choke" before they poured it. it was epic! Lanterns on the aisle, inside arch and truly the best wedding we could've asked for. All the rooms are cute and quaint. I highly recommend paying for the upgrade to the Allman Suite, but honestly all the rooms are suites and perfect. The cottage house has kitchenettes and they have two large bridal lounges to get ready with a man cave complete with pool table and video games. I recommend them again and again. Let me start by saying none of this is Denise's fault. She was a great waitress. However, she should have moved us to a better location the minute this problem that I'm about to tell you about became obvious. I shall explain. We asked to sit outside on the large patio. No, we did not have reservations. The hostess declined our request and said she has too many reservations that night and instead sat us on a smaller adjacent patio right across from a door. Fine. However, instead of a lovely view while we ate our dinner, we got to watch toilet paper laced sewage water pop up from the lawn. When the problem became apparent, Denise offered to relocate us to another table however, it was only one table away. Yet, according to our visual confirmation, there were at least 6 tables in the larger patio area further away from the problem where we could have been sat. We were highly entertained by the Joseph Ambler version of Caddyshack while, just 6' away from our table, sewage from the bathroom was coming up through the ground via a pipe onto the lawn. The gentleman responsible for fixing the issue was desperately trying to take care of it. Kudos to him. Here's my issue. By the time we left there were still 4 tables that had remained clear, yes, we paid attention, and had never been sat. When we left there were 7 tables clear. Seems to me that we could have sat in a better area farther away from the sewage issue, but nobody thought to move the couple who was being subjected to sewage coming up just only 6' away from their dining table. This is literally unconscionable. And to be honest, if you had comped us a dessert or drink or anything like that, I would have been OK with leaving you a positive review. But instead we spent a $110 on a meal that we very much enjoyed, but was marred by the presence of sewage coming up from a pipe only 6' away from us. Shame on your customer service. I took photos. So we will start with the service. It wasn't great but there was a wedding happening at the same time that diners were eating on the patio. Seems maybe they need more training. We constantly waited for our server to show up The patio and surrounding areas are beautiful. The food was above average but not what it should be portion wise for the money. My husband got the NY strip and it was tender but very small. The appetizers were delicious. We got shrimp cocktail and clam chowder. We will definitely give it another try. read more

My wife and I had our wedding at JAI in early September, 2022. We were so very pleased with how the Inn handled our wedding, which went off without a hitch. Teg Ostroff and her staff were truly amazing. We found the pricing very reasonable, and the food was excellent. Is a beautiful venue with several buildings on a stunning property, set back from the toad and really private. Once we booked JAI we worked with Dana Kolher and Jamie Burns. They were so kind and considerate to us this past year as the event came into focus. Jamie, the Event Manager and Dana, the Hotel Manager were always so patient and personable. We also were very pleased with Carol as our Banquet Manager. She was absolutely wonderful in making sure everything went off according to our plans, and she was always available helping us with wedding party details and making sure that we received all that we asked for in preparation for the event. The bartenders, the waitstaff all were so attentive. Also, Rose and Jackie H. provided the breakfast for us each morning and it was really a terrific spread. I had a chance to talk with both of them at length and they were so warm and accommodating to us and to our families. I would recommend the Inn to my colleagues and friends without reservation. Let me preface this by saying that I've been here many times over the past 20 years and have had many good meals. However, today I had one of the worst meals of my life. Seafood linguini had over cooked shrimp and tiny little chunks of random seafood that I couldn't tell what it was drowning in a disgusting grey sauce. Fish and chips that were clearly under cooked (cold in the middle). Lobster roll with a soggy cold bun that seemed as though it had been sitting out waiting to get delivered. And something that was supposed to be risotto that everyone thought was mashed potatoes. Our service was also terrible. For this price range I expect A LOT more. They did compensate us with a $25 dollar gift card for our next visit, which for $200 worth of food doesn't make me feel any better. read more

Needed a place to stay for my Aunt's 85th Birthday celebration and booked a few rooms with other family members at the Inn. It's a very cool place with a number of buildings and comfortable, clean rooms. The grounds are lovely and we saw a number of wedding parties and costume enthusiasts taking photos. They have a terrific Restaurant and Bar where a number of locals seem to come for dinner, drinks or both. Office was not clearly marked and a bit hard to find when we arrived in the early morning. Plus side, they let us check in early because the room was available. Rooms were comfortable, clean and nicely appointed. A little bit loud as it's older buildings, but most of the other guests were courteous. The night we had dinner, we were a little rushed as they wanted to close up and prep for morning. That was the only disappointment as we wanted to have a couple of post-dinner drinks and visit with family. The food was quite delicious, though. Would not recommend the cheese plate (just wasn't anything special) but everything else was great. It was an excellent choice for what we needed and I'd recommend for a stay or drinks and dinner if you're not looking for accommodations. read more

The grounds of the Joseph Ambler Inn are a country-side, step back in time. The main Inn, restaurant and pub are original stone and beam. My room was was immaculate and the small little fireplace was not only charming, its delicate flames took the Spring chill off. The pub food was better than expected and the wine pour generous! My salmon was grilled perfectly and was served hot and with a nice amount of seasoning! Compliments to their chef! The bar felt more like a neighborhood spot, I liked that family, business travelers and locals all mixed with ease. I would have welcomed displays with information about the Inn's background. Maybe on the menu? Or as a welcoming display in the room? As one who enjoys history, it could have added to the experience and overall charm. The care given to the management of the Inn was obvious; having a chance to be part of it for a night was an unanticipated pleasure. read more
