Baxter suite is so charming and we had such a nice relaxing few days there with our dog on our road trip home. We loved hearing about the history of the hotel. Bed and pillows were so comfy and I enjoyed the large bathtub. Unfortunately I don't recommend food options in this area. Go to new hope or Lambertville NJ. The dinner at the hotel was really not good especially for the price but the views and ambiance were lovely. The breakfast at the next door market was also quite poor quality. Hotel feedback: it would be nice to offer bath salts or bubbles. It would be a game changer to offer a full English breakfast at the restaurant for hotel guests. I tried to have keurig coffee since I didn't like the market coffee but the machine was very dirty which turned me off completely. read more

My wife and I decided to try a new place for our 35th wedding anniversary. The Black Bass Hotel always gets solid recommendations from our friends. The river view was fantastic and relaxing. The presentation of the food was class A as you can tell from the photos that I added. We had a cheese plate for an appetizer that was generous and all of the cheese was quite tasty. For an entree, I had the St. Charleston Meeting Street Crab. It was perfect The chunk crab was perfectly cooked in a cream sauce with an au gratin sauce. It was both presented well and quite tasty. This dish by itself would be 5 stars. The staff was attentive but not overly so. Everyone was friendly and quite willing to engage in light banter. The staff would also get 5 stars. The only reason that I gave this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 was dessert. I usually stay on a low carb diet but I decided to treat myself to a dessert for this occasion. I ordered the "Warm Apple Tart." Unfortunately, it was not warm and the apples were pretty much flavorless. I would not order this dessert again. The bottom line is the Black Bass Hotel is a solid choice and the atmosphere cannot be beat if you get a riverside table. The portions are generous and the food is quite good. Had dinner. The parking valet could not find our car. I located it, picked up my wife and left. Valet still had the other key. We live 2 hours away. I called the office and a young lady said she would mail the key. We had nice chat about she, me, my wife, and Black Bass chef Corey being CB West High School grads. Key never came. We celebrated an anniversary here last week. We wanted outside seating with a great view on a beautiful September day. The view from the back patio was of the scenic Delaware River and Lumberville Bridge as the sun was setting. We started with a glass of Prosecco as a toast. For a starter we shared a bowl of corn bisque. We ordered a bottle of Brunello, the Red drum fish special, and Ribeye. All were wonderful. The steak was cooked to perfection. The vegetable choice for the steak was not the best choice. Something lighter like asparagus would have been preferred. If I could make one recommendation it would be that the choice of music be more fitting to the atmosphere but it was low enough that it could be tuned out. If you go in the cooler fall weather, they used to give customers blankets to use. I'll report back after our fall outing and update if they still do that. read more

This place doesn't pack people in and therefore you have to plan a couple weeks in advance to reserve a table. But it's well worth it. It's a great place with character nestled along the river. It's dark wood and uneven floors that bring this establishment to life. We started things off with cocktails that were well made and not light on the spirits. Our server Sue was delightful and pleasant throughout. We chose the squid appetizer which had a great spicy vinegar side that intentionally brought the flavors to life. I had the swordfish special which was perfectly cooked and flavorful. My wife had the short rib which also was delicious. We ended the evening with a slice of tirimisu and some coffee. WARNING! I am disappointed to be writing this review because I first reached out privately to management in an effort to share my concerns directly rather than post a negative review. Unfortunately, I never received a response, which left me feeling that my feedback--and my experience as a customer--simply did not matter. I made a reservation more than two months in advance specifically because our out-of-town guests wanted to dine outdoors by the river. I even called ahead to confirm this request. On the day of our reservation, I was informed there was a wedding and we would be seated inside. While disappointing, we accepted the change because it was too late to make other plans. The bigger issue was the food and service. I ordered the pistachio-crusted lamb chops medium. When the meal arrived, the lamb was extremely undercooked--raw in the center. Our waitress disappeared for so long that my husband had to get up and find someone to locate her. After waiting approximately 12 minutes, my meal was returned. Rather than preparing a new dish, the kitchen simply re-cooked the same lamb chop, which was obvious because the piece I had already cut off was still on the plate. The pistachio crust that had been the best part of the dish had mostly fallen away in the process. By then, the rest of our table had nearly finished eating, and one guest who waited for me ended up with a cold meal. Despite being told the dish was unsatisfactory, there was no visit from a manager, no apology beyond the waitress taking the plate back, and no attempt at service recovery--not even a complimentary coffee or dessert. What is most disappointing is not the mistake itself. Restaurants make mistakes. What matters is how they respond. In this case, the meal was mishandled, the service was inattentive, and management showed no concern when I later reached out privately to provide constructive feedback. Each week, the search for a new restaurant leads us on a scenic drive, and this week's destination was the historic Black Bass Hotel in Lumberville, Pennsylvania. Situated right on the Delaware River, it promised a perfect setting for a gathering with my wife, my brother, and our best friends. My wife and I set out in our C8 Corvette convertible for the hour-and-a-half journey. With the sun on our backs and the radio playing, we cruised through the New Jersey Pines. The world outside was a blur of trees as we sang along, feeling a sense of pure freedom. Our route took us north through Trenton and Washington's Crossing, tracing the path of the Delaware River. We passed through Stockton, New Jersey, before crossing the iconic steel bridge into Pennsylvania, continuing north on Route 32 until we reached our destination. Upon arrival, we were met with a stunning historic building. Built in the 1740s, the Black Bass Hotel has a rich and storied past, serving for centuries as a sanctuary for travelers, traders, and sportsmen. Though it's had many names over the years, the building's legacy remains, and it's now proudly included in the National Register of Historic Places. We learned that after a period of decline, the hotel was rescued in 1949 by Herbert "Herbie" Ward, an avid Anglophile. He filled it with his extensive collection of British memorabilia, including a famous pewter bar from Maxim's of Paris, which now holds a place of honor in the hotel's tavern. The Thompson family has since done a masterful job restoring the building to a five-star standard. Our party of five was seated on the outdoor veranda, offering a stunning view of the river and canal. Our waitress, Karen, was a delight, and we quickly discovered she was from Surf City, just a few miles from our home. She started us off with a crucial cocktail round. My wife had her usual Tito's and tonic, our friends chose a 7 & 7 and a Lemontini, and my brother and I ordered our signature Bloody Marys. With the perfect blend of spice and flavor, garnished with blue cheese-stuffed olives, celery, and a citrus wedge, they were simply delicious. After another round of drinks and some warm croissants and muffins, we perused the brunch menu, which offered everything from shared plates to classic eggs and bacon. My wife chose the soup of the day, a cold cucumber soup by Emeril Lagasse, and the Quiche of the Day. The soup was a light, refreshing, no-cook dish perfect for the hot weather, with a smooth, tangy base of sour cream. My brother's omelet was enormous, and he reported that its soft, tender texture and rich flavor were delightful. The quiche, a classic French savory tart with a flaky crust and rich custard, was prepared just right. As our entrees arrived, each plate was a work of art. My shrimp and grits, a dish from the American South, seemed to have been lost on its journey north. While the shrimp were cooked to perfection, the accompanying gravy was bland and thick, lacking the spicy heat and rich flavor the dish is known for. It was, unfortunately, a failure of execution. Despite the one misstep, the overall visit to the Black Bass Hotel was a wonderful experience. The venue was breathtaking, the service was excellent, and the food was great for the most part. Definitely the Sangiovese! I had the crispy pork belly with pumpkin seeds as an appetizer (meat is a bit fatty in spots, but tasty). My husband had the horseradish shrimp ( very good). My entree was braised short rib ( pretty large portion but again fatty), he had sautéed scallops ( great). Dessert was a warm apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Good but could be more flavorful (with cinnamon maybe). Overall the service is terrific, ambiance delicious ( the bar has interesting royal British memorabilia). Time to update my review here. Unfortunately we weren't treated well so we left after drinks. I made a reservation for 3 and requested an outside table and they accepted it. Upon arrival the host said that there were no tables outside even though we could see there were plenty. So we sat inside but after drinks decided we no longer wanted to eat there. The server pulled a face and went and complained to the host who came over and tried to berate us for booking a brunch table and not eating. Nowhere in the booking process did it say the table was a brunch table. In my opinion it is always the customers right to decide not to eat and pay the drinks bill and leave for any reason. I will no longer be coming here or recommending this establishment to my friends and work colleagues for business dinners. Original review. Lovely place to stop and grab a drink in the afternoon after walking along the canal/river. There are high tops on the balcony where you can enjoy a drink with a great view of the river. If you want to eat here then make a reservation on the weekend as they get extremely busy. We've eaten here in the past and while it is good it's not great. Today, the historic (and allegedly haunted) Black Bass Hotel offers both comfortable lodging in a handful of comfortable, well-maintained guest rooms and locally-inspired cuisine served by friendly and knowledgeable staff in its moderately-upscale restaurant. The restaurant features a warm and welcoming ambiance and the view of the Delaware River and the Lumberville-Raven Rock pedestrian bridge is phenomenal whether you're sitting right at the windows or on the other side of the narrow dining room. The menu offers something for everyone - including plenty of gluten-free options. On our recent visit on a Saturday afternoon, my dining companion and I both ordered off the Lunch menu. We both started with a bowl of the Split Pea Soup ($9), which was very tasty once we added a dash of salt and quite filling. I opted for the Porchetta Sandwich ($18), a generous portion of tender roasted pork with rosemary garlic mayonnaise, and broccoli rabe on a ciabatta loaf with a side of french fries. My dining companion opted for the Pastrami Seasoned Smoked Salmon Sandwich ($18), a filling portion of smoked salmon with whole grain mustard sauce, gruyère cheese, and coleslaw on marbled rye toast and served with a side of fresh onion rings. We both thought our choices were very tasty, satisfying portions (so much so that each of us brought half of our sandwiches home for the next day), and reasonably priced given the environment. Went recently for our anniversary dinner we both had one of their specials (NY Strip). The meat was tough with significant fat. We have been to the Resturant numerous times and each time walk away with the opinion that it's great to dine near the river however food is mediocre at best. Looking over the water as you eat is always a huge plus in my book and every single thing we ate was SO good!! We were seated by the windows facing the river.we ordered a bottle of Gruner Veltliner from the wine list but they were out so we switched to a French Sauvignon Blanc . The wine was great. The food was barely edible. Brought an out of town dear friend here for a local lunch. I ate politely and did not return my meal. It was peak produce season- nothing farm to table local on menu. While nothing can take away the charm and ambience of this very special place, my experience at Christmas Eve dinner left much to be desired. While I cannot criticize the waitstaff as everyone was pleasant and caring, I can deeply criticize the food. Yes, it was a holiday prix fixe dinner...one we have enjoyed in years past, but this year the food was simply not good. We went to celebrate my 65th birthday. We've celebrated many milestones here such as our 25th anniversary and stop here on many occasions. We're lucky enough to get a table outside. Our service was lovely. We split the beach salad and the lamb chops and we had the Greek appetizer platter with too delicious martinis. My only complaint is that it was my birthday. My husband forgot to tell them when we made the reservations, but after we ate, he went to our server and mentioned it was my birthday. I've eaten here before, in the fall, menu was much different (was also a few years ago) Yesterday we brought family from Scotland (who had come last year with my parents also & enjoyed their meal, so we came again with one other visitor) Service was very good. Drinks were brought promptly. App's were good, except the wonton's on the shrimp were quite dark and crispy, everyone loved the pork belly, I would have liked it slightly crispier. Our meals came directly after appetizers, some weren't off of the table yet. Everyone's looked great, except mine, did I order wrong? I was flip flopping between steak & fish then chicken & scallops then between which fish. The Barramundi which was almond crusted was super pale and tasteless, however the crispy cauliflower tasted great as did the Thai veggies. Everyone else loved their meals. I could have sent mine back but the vegetables and 1/2 of the fish was good enough. The portions (except for the pork and chicken) didn't reflect the prices but you're paying for the view also. What self-respecting, expensive restaurant seats a party of seven in an outlier room at a makeshift, dented wooden board (serving as a table) just two feet away from the restroom door? Where people practically brush up against you on their way to the facilities. The same area where servers dump trays of dirty dishes after bussing tables, before they're finally taken to the kitchen. Not only were we seated unappetizingly close to the restroom, but our "table" was so narrow that we couldn't sit across from each other without our knees touching. When we politely asked to move to the available standard table just five feet away, we were told it was "reserved." How was that reservation different from ours? Is there a secret hierarchy of reservations we weren't made aware of? That table sat empty for 45 minutes into our already disappointing dining experience before anyone from that party even showed up. This place prides itself on its "unmatchable river views", but conveniently forgets to mention that the view is only available to smaller parties, while larger groups are ushered past it into a windowless bussing area. At the very least, this should be clearly communicated when making a reservation. We highly recommend the restaurant be upfront about its seating arrangements, especially for larger groups, so people aren't placed in uncomfortable, awkward spots, feeling ripped off. And for heaven's sake, get rid of that improvised wooden board by the bathroom serving as a table. Show your establishment and your guests the respect they deserve, and stop making bottom-line focused decisions. read more

We love the Black Bass hotel and make it a point to make the 50 minute drive here a couple times a year. Which by the way, the drive here from the Lehigh Valley is gorgeous. To start, they have complementary valet which is lovely. The building is old and historic and overlooks the Delaware River which is beautiful. In the summer they have a beautiful outdoor patio you can sit on. There's also a bridge right there you can walk across to a State Park on the NJ side of the river. Be sure to ask for a seat by the window! The food here has always been consistently good. My mom and I are both gluten free and they have plenty if options marked on the menu and offer GF bread and cracker substitutes, which we appreciate. We've been here for both dinner and brunch and everything has always been very good from steak, fish, omelets, charcuterie boards and more. They also make decent cocktails and have some good wine choices. The only thing I can't speak to is dessert but I'm sure they have some great ones! read more

The beet salad was very delicious. I think it could have been elevated with some local goat cheese and pumpkin seeds. But it was very good. My friend had the cheddar cheeseburger which was absolutely juicy. My second dish that I ordered was lamb chops, which they cooked absolutely perfect and I was very happy with the seasoning and the overall dish. My family and I have been here several times for big celebrations. Why? The ambiance, the view, and the service. The prices make this somewhere I don't frequent often, but when we do it's always a nice time together. We have always had the nicest servers, and great server assistants. We went for a friends anniversary dinner. Very nice experience! Everything was a 10. We were in a separate room right off the bar area. First off, there is valet parking and self parking across the street. Secondly, if you come here it is $$$. I partook in eating the shrimp appetizer which was fantastic. I got the last one and after my first bite I know why-delicious. I had the special-Haddock and it was cooked perfectly. My wife had Salmon which she said was delicious. We had drinks from the bar. We were looking for a night away from home to relax and found the Black Bass Hotel on yelp. The room was updated with a modern bathroom and walk in shower. The walk out patio had a great view of the river and the pedestrian bridge over the Delaware. We had reservations for the restaurant and the view from the table was beautiful. I ordered the rack of lamb and my wife ordered the steak. For the appetizer we ordered the pork belly. The pork belly was excellent, who ever left the negative review previously for the pork belly obviously doesn't know how it is supposed to be prepared. The lamb and steak were cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. We had a night cap at the bar and the bartender was well versed in the history of the hotel. I will say the hidden gem of this hotel it the general store across the street. We went there for brunch. I wasn't looking for anything spectacular since it was a small kitchen and I was expecting the normal diner options. My wife ordered the waffles and I ordered the BLT. I will say this much, if you stay at the hotel definitely go here for brunch. The BLT has 7 strips of bacon, perfectly cooked with a picked onion and beet side that is to die for. I would have just ordered this for breakfast if I knew how good it was. The waffles are freshly made and the berry compote was delicious.
