It's taken me a while to come back to write this review but I want to share my experience. After reading another review here, I share similar sentiments. We moved to Austin 6 years ago, found Dr. Schmidt and his very nice team a year after we moved. I got a Groupon for teeth whitening. They were so nice we decided to use them as our primary dentist after that. When I scheduled my first cleaning, which was great I will say, he told me that I had 10 cavities. Prior to that I had zero. I knew that I had a couple of problem teeth that needed looking at but not 10. I decided to trust them and let them fill the cavities, no matter how minor. I overheard one of the women working at the front desk mention how great our insurance was, and thought that was strange that someone would say that out loud. We went for another 2 years there for cleanings only and one day after one of my cleanings, I got a bill in the mail. I drove to the office and was told that they no longer took our insurance. I asked why no one advised me when we went in for cleanings but they didn't have a good answer. Fast forward 5 years later. I'm finally getting one of the cavities that was filled fixed and needed to get a crown. They're very nice and if you're just going for a whitening or cleaning, it's great. If they say you need 10 cavities filled, get a 2nd opinion. read more

A shout out to Dr. Schmidt, his assistant Dawn, and the hygienist Hannah for an excellent and very detailed service to replace two partials and to discuss the possibility of implants in the future. I can't believe it took me so long to leave a review! I have had Dr. Schmidt as my dentist for 20 years! I found him using 1-800-dentist back when I needed 2 wisdom teeth out. My requests were "a place that will give a full up front price, and a dentist that's gentle with oral shots." Clearly he did not disappoint, because I've kept coming back all of these years. And now my husband has been his patient for about a decade. The entire staff are sweet. They always make a point to make me feel cared for and welcome. The hygienist, Leo, is amazing as well. Very gentle. And he magically plays music (of my choosing) from his shoulder area. I really can't say enough. I have never feared the dentist since that first visit so long ago. I came to Masterpiece Smiles to receive ZOOM WHITENING treatment. I've used Crest White Strips and HEB White Strips in the past that have definitely whitened my teeth, but not as intensely or as quick as this Zoom Whitening treatment. courteous and professional staff were prompt to help calm, peaceful, welcoming lobby staff provided ample information about the service and offered to answer any questions I was concerned about pain during the procedure, and there was some light pain, but it was totally bearable. I was in and out in about 45mins I feel at-ease going here and would come again! read more

This was my first time using a Groupon and my first visit to Dr. Schmidt's office. Unfortunately, I'm in an HMO plan and will not be able to use my insurance at Dr. Schmidt's office until I change over to a PPO plan. I came in for Zoom teeth whitening via the Groupon. The staff were all very friendly and professional. The office was nice and clean. Parking was easy. The actual treatment went well. It wasn't painful and didn't take long. BEYOND AMAZING ! That is really the only way to express my experience with Dr Schmidt at Masterpiece Smiles and his whole office . I came to him after an extremely stressful year to get my teeth cleaned . What I found out was that I was grinding and clenching my teeth and jaw so badly I had actually fractured 4 of my molars . Dr Schmidt recommended and fitted me for a night guard and told me I would be amazed at the relief I would find . Honestly the thought of it was not something I was interested at all , but promised him that even though I was skeptical , I would give it a try . Needless to say what I soon found was honestly shocking to me . The comfort and relief I found after the very first night had me beyond hooked . My jaw was relaxing , I slept well for the first time in a year and my migraines went away immediately. At that point I was smoking a pack of cigarettes a day due to massive discomfort and constantly feeling tension and therefore totally stressed out . I had no idea that so much of it was literally what I was putting my body neck jaw and shoulders through by constantly clenching my jaw and teeth . Within a week I had quit and have not felt the need to smoke to this day . I came back to the office a month later for repair of my molars and tried to convey my gratitude for Dr. Schmidt's help but found my self thanking him through tears?? ! I had no idea ! I cannot convey how incredibly amazing my experience with this office has been . The kindness of the staff the professional manner with which they treat you , the laughter and the gentle nature of Dr Schmidt is quite honestly something I have never , ever experienced from a dental office . Front staff is very welcoming, my dental assistant Piper was very thorough in going over the details of the treatment and was very professional. I was really happy with my visit to Masterpiece Smiles! I purchased their groupon offer for Zoom teeth whitening as I had a wedding a few days after and I wanted some good looking pearly whites! Dr. Schmidt came and did an initial consultation and then the hygienist walked me through the procedure. The whole process was very quick to getting started and I didn't even have to wait in the waiting room for more than a couple of minutes! I appreciated the promptness. I felt very comfortable and taken care of during the whole experience. Dr. Schmidt was very kind and personable and I did not feel like I was being "upsold" anything or even trying to be brought into the practice! I did mention I had a dentist I was very happy with 45 minutes away and that Austin is a bit of a drive for me. I'm not sure what to think. The office folks and Dr. Schmidt are very nice. Came in on a groupon for whitening. Great job. Never had a dentist check me prior to whitening; but he did. He found numerous issues. I knew a might have 2, but... A cracked tooth that needed to be extracted, a crown, maybe two, well, maybe three. One cavity, then it was four. Maybe I didn't listen correctly. I hadn't had a cavity since childhood. So I got a second opinion from a dentist I know. No evidence that I needed fillings; yet he wanted me to come in for at least one more. Also, when I got my teeth cleaned there prior to the other stuff, they said I needed another cleaning in 3 months. Like I said; they are nice. But it feels like a business model like Jiffy Lube; come in for oil change, leave with a lot more done on your car and wallet. read more

I have been going to Dr. Joseph Schmidt, the amazingly fantastic dentist behind Masterpiece Smiles, for about 30 years, and highly recommend him and his staff! Last week, I had a very old filling replaced on my upper front tooth. Piper, his assistant, swabbed some numbing gel where Dr. Schmidt was going to give me a further numbing shot, and the shot never hurt at all, not even after the work was over and the numbing subsided. Dr. Schmidt is especially good at giving numbing shots, and his cosmetic dentistry results are very impressive. All of his staff members are extremely competent, professional, and friendly. If you want to have a procedure done once and done for top results, look no further than Masterpiece Smiles and Dr. Joseph Schmidt! read more

This office is incredible....from the front desk, Samantha, to the dental assistant, Piper (bubbly, friendly, explained everything in detail, attentive, and gave some GREAT post whitening advice!), and Dr. Schmidt, very professional but super friendly, and explained realistic expectations from the whitening. Dr. Schmidt did not attempt in any way to talk me into any dental other work. I told him I had my own dentist. I do (as did they) recommend a dental hygiene cleaning close to whitening treatment. WOW, the whitening result definitely definitely surpassed my expectations. UNBELIEVABLE result. NOT painful. I would HIGHLY recommend Zoom and this great office. Wish I could give them 10 stars! Dr. Schmidt and his staff have been nothing short of amazing! I think for most people the dentist is not on their top places to visit, and that's very true for me after a very traumatic visit as a child. However, Dr. Schmidt and his staff has definitely gone above and beyond to make sure I felt comfortable and at ease throughout my appointment! I've visited the office for 3 different procedures, Zoom whitening (which by the way is amazing), a deep cleaning and had fillings done! Every time I've been blown away by the kindness of every employee! They literally have held my hand and been so patient with me even though I know I'm not the best patient. I appreciate everything they've done to ensure my experience at the dentist was outstanding! Not to mention the 9pm phone call from DR. I would highly recommend going to this office for routine visits and for wisdom teeth surgery. I recently had to get two teeth removed and was very anxious. The technician I worked with was friendly and explained the process to me before we started and even gave me a button to push in case I experienced any major discomfort. I had a comfortable experience getting my teeth whitened with Zoom. I've always wanted to try this but was nervous. The staff and Dr. Schmidt were detailed in their explanation. I appreciated the visit with Dr. Schmidt. It's a very nice, modern and clean practice. The process was easy and I was covered with a blanket when I got cold which I appreciated. I think I even dozed off for a bit. I took 2 ibuprofen & 1 Tylenol before the procedure b/c this helped me get through my root canal so I figured it would help me again if there was any pain. It worked cuz I didn't have much pain during or after the procedure. Occasionally, I got a quick "zinger" but only 2 or 3 times. The next day, I had sensitivity on my teeth but I took my meds and I made it thru fine. The third day, I have no pain nor sensitivity. The hardest thing about it is trying to only eat white things and when I ate something with color, I immediately brushed my teeth. I didn't realize until now how many things that could stain my teeth that I eat and drink. It's practically everything. Hope u have a great experience too. My teeth are really white now. read more

I have never had any problems with my teeth, and I have always gone to my regular 6 month checkups. When I came to Dr. Schmidt, he told me I had 3 cavities all on the right side of my mouth and proceeded to fill them. That was over three months ago and I have had pain in those teeth ever since. I have now spent over $700 cash at other dentist trying to fix the problem, but nothing had been able to help. I have not been able to chew on that side of my mouth for the past 3 months. I would never recommend Dr. Schmidt to anyone. I went from never having any teeth problems to not being able to chew on one side of my mouth for over three months now. read more

Masterpieces Smiles, as Groupon put it, is located in a plaza off of Bee Cave Rd in Westlake. Had a bit of trouble finding the place with GPS but the office is very welcoming and convenient for those who live around that area. I came in for a Zoom Whitening procedure offered on Groupon at a hefty discount. I guess I really should learn when people tell me "you get what you pay for". The consultation with Dr. Schmidt was normal, he took a look at my teeth to see if there were any problems that he could find to keep me as a patient. I am religious with my teeth cleanings and daily hygiene, so he couldn't find any issues other than "I grind my teeth at night". This Groupon was used to bring patients into his practice. The Zoom treatment was done by what I expect to be a hygienist who was careful in placing the bleach and thorough in explaining the process. I was told my teeth "were already white enough" and that they couldn't go much brighter. I disagreed, but we continued. The actual procedure did not hurt - no zingers, pain or true discomfort. It did take a while (1 hour) but I wasn't checked on as much as I had figured they would. At one point I thought the bleaching light had moved, but they didn't say anything. Once the procedure was done, they tried to upsell a take home kit (should have bought it!) and tried to make another appointment with me to be seen by Dr. Schmidt for regular check ups. I already love the dentist I have so I declined without being pressured (awesome). The 3 star rating comes down to this: the hygienist placed the bleach too low on my two front teeth (so it looked like only half was white). It bothered me for days to come. The worst part of this experience was that my teeth bleach, after following all detailed instructions, faded after a week. After one week after having this procedure, I seemed to have returned to my original color. I'm not sure if the bleaching agent didn't take, or if this is the way teeth bleaching normally works. I feel that my $100 spent on this Groupon could've been used on white strips with longer effect. Oh well! read more

Beware of this Dentist & his clerk. I found out that they not only forget to tell you they are out of network, but they tell you you will be charged one amount when booking the amount,then charge you a higher price after the procedure is completed! I asked how much it would cost for my crown prior to booking my appt. & was given a specific amount. After having the work done I was told I would have to pay an additional $150.00 for the crown. Then when I got my permanent crown (5 weeks later), I was given a bill for $470.50. The Dentist billed my insurance company for procedures he never performed. I complained to both his clerk and to the dentist, but there was nothing they would do to resolve the issue. read more

This was the worst dental experience I have ever had. If you are looking for a dentist that is concerned with helping you have a healthy mouth, look elsewhere. This dentists number 1 priority is Invisalign and teeth whitening, rather than oral health. I ended up here after purchasing a Groupon for a cleaning and X-rays. They had me come in on separate days for the cleaning and the x-rays meaning I had to ask off from work twice. The cleaning was not very thorough and they do not have a very high-tech x-Ray machine, therefore it takes forever. Also, the tech completely forgot to have me put on the radiation blocking bib. The cherry on top was when the sleazy dentist gave a professional recommendation for teeth whitening. I am well equipped with two working eyes and do not need to pay a dentist to tell me what color my teeth are. Needless to say I did not schedule further work with this office. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Masterpiece Smiles for a Zoom teeth whitening procedure yesterday. All of the staff were exceptional. I was greeted promptly by the receptionist when I walked in and within a few minutes I was taken to the treatment room for the Zoom whitening by Angie, the dental technician. Angie was very kind, explained the entire process, and put me at ease throughout the process. She was constantly checking on me during the whitening process to make sure I was comfortable. Dr. Schmidt also did a brief dental exam prior to the whitening process to make sure that I was a good candidate for the procedure. He explained the process and answered my questions. After the process was completed, Dr. Schmidt re-checked my mouth and teeth to make sure everything was as expected. He explained that I might have some discomfort and what I could expect. The pain and discomfort was minimal and the results made it totally worthwhile. The customer service was outstanding, the office was clean and welcoming and overall it was a very good experience. The results of the whitening process were excellent. I was very pleased with the service. I would definitely come back here if I need more dental or cosmetic procedures. read more

Went in for Zoom whitening and had a great experience. The hygienist was very thorough in explaining how things went, and although the process itself isn't fun, it was effective. My teeth were already pretty white so there wasn't a huge difference, but it worked better than whitestrips, and i much prefer spending a morning doing that than putting on strips for a month. I went in for a Zoom teeth whitening and I couldn't ask for better service and care. I have the results to prove it!

I am surprised to see a few negative reviews. My first visit I had my teeth cleaned, x-rays and a thorough check-up. Dr. Schmidt found several red irritations on the roof of my mouth. I wear an upper partial which I wear to bed. He suggested I take it out at night for two weeks and return in two weeks to see if it had improved. It had not, so he made an adjustment to my partial and advised me to return in one week. If it has not healed he would send me to another dentist. I appreciate that he is sending me to a specialist if it has not healed. His staff are so nice, professional and courteous. He is very caring. I would definitely recommend him. read more

I have to say I move a lot due to work and have never thought much of what dentist I go to. I will say Joseph G Schmidt DDS is a great dentist and very welcoming. If I move, which I might have to, I think I will just drive into Austin every 3-6 months for a cleaning that is how much this dentist has impressed me. read more
