I have lived in Oak Park for over 3 years and always drove by here just thinking it was another deli. But today I decided to stop in for the pepper and egg sandwich (thanks to Jeff Mauro and his raving Instagram post!) Wow, this sandwich is a home run -- packed to the brim with fluffy eggs, sweet peppers all on a Turano roll. The best! The service was excellent -- it took only 5 minutes to make the sandwich and serve it out in a to-go bag. Love all the eclectic products on the shelves, from pastas, to sauces and even some cherry smoked BBQ potato chips. Great visit -- will be back! I have been wanting to come here for a long time now. But they're closed on Sundays and close hella early during the week and even earlier on Saturdays. The staff was vert friendly. They had one person at the register and a couple of them working on the kitchen. As far as being an Italian grocery store, they're not well stocked with a lot of empty shelves. They had the essentials, but should definitely take advantage of every inch of that real estate. I ordered two Italian beef sandwiches. One with hot peppers and another one without. The sandwiches were delicious. The bread was fresh and they give you plenty of beer in the sandwiches. The giardiniera was very delicious. It had the perfect amount of heat, definitely spicier than most. They even have a very hot jar that I plan on purchasing in the very near future. I am always looking for a great italian sub and homemade salads. Got 9 inch sandwiches and small potato salad. Sandwich very thin. Not much filling and potato salad not much in flavor. At lunchtime i was the only person in the store. No greeting. Just girl at checkout reading. The counter was when greeted. I expect an italian deli to have several items in deli case. I called around to a half dozen authentic Italian joints, hoping to find one that could deliver a lot of food on the north side, and on short notice. A dear friend just had a very unexpected loss in the family, and I needed to deliver some comfort food to the grieving widow (with a very high standard for food) and the daughters who just lost their dad very suddenly. Serrelli's was a dream to work with. They were so kind and accommodating, able to pull together and deliver a large order (food for 40) in just a couple hours. The first gentleman who answered the phone had a rough accent and quickly switched me to a younger girl who was able to help. To me that actually cemented that they probably have very good and authentic food. They delivered just what I asked for at a very reasonable price, and have a small bit of comfort to this Italian family. I was told the sausage was "absolutely delicious". I ordered a deli tray and hot Italian sausage. A very pleasant experience all around. These folks will treat you like family. The Italian beef was decent, but definitely not a remarkable standout in comparison to Johnnies and the like around Chicago. Admittedly the bread Serrelli's uses is quite distinct though. Serrelli's Finer Foods on the north side of North Avenue near Narragansett has been around since 1934. The cow in front greets those who venture into this Italian deli. The aisles are stocked with goods such as pasta sauce, garlic, cookies, etc. When you reach the back of the store, you will find the deli counter along with a counter to order sandwiches. On a random Saturday afternoon I went with the Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers. The sandwich was generously filled with sliced Italian beef and pieces of green pepper. Although many like this sandwich dipped, I like it dry as the beef generally offers enough beef juices for me without turning the bread into a spongy mess. Indeed the Italian bread stayed intact, crusty and chewy as it cradles its yummy precious fillings. read more

I have mentioned this in previous reviews, but one of the things I really love about Yelp is the ability to find new things and try new places that I never would have known about. I have been on a quest to find a truly great deli sandwich and have a special place in my heart for the Italian grocery stores/ delis. I was doing some research on Yelp and stumbled upon this neighborhood gem. All I can say is this place is amazing. I was blown away with everything here. I will absolutely keep coming back because there are many other things I want to try. This is located on North Avenue in Chicago, just east of Oak Park Avenue. There is street parking available and there is parking on the side streets nearby. When you come inside, you will be greeted by one of the many friendly employees that work here. What really impressed me was how friendly and outgoing the employees were. From the ladies at the register to the employee who made my sandwich, absolutely top notch service. Now the food...wow, simply wow. I went with the 9" Italian Sub and I can honestly say it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. I am a self admitted sandwich snob and can usually find something that irritates me on a sandwich, but not here. The ingredients were fresh, bread was delicious and it was perfect. I will be back to try the beef, maybe meatball sandwich, some side salads, who am I kidding I will be back frequently. It really takes a lot to truly impress me, but Serrelli's did on every level. Our family fell in love with Serrelli's at their first location on North Avenue, just west of Pulaski, back in 1966. I wish digital cameras were around then because it had an absolutely engaging and lovable sign swinging outside the store that touted 'home of 'Roost Beef.' The affair is ongoing. My daughter and her husband make a long drive from the North 'burbs to get what us part of our family's holiday tradition - Italian beef, the bread and all the add-ons. A year ago I moved to Texas and I miss Serrelli's (and Johnny's, Jimmy's Hot Dogs, Gene & Judes and more. Texas is a wasteland when it comes to ethnic foods sources in the Houston area; There are more fast food chains littering the wide open spaces than anyplace I've ever been. Less anyone think all Serrelli's sells is beef - It is a treat to one's olfactory senses to enter the store. There's a honest-to-gosh butcher counter, pastas, olive oils and spices and a freezer of Italian specialties. When the storefront was modernized I feared it would change the experience. This is a rather new looking store and it seemed extremely clean; the employees present were helpful and polite. There's a decent assortment of Italian packaged goods, and an extremely modest deli counter...but I went in for lunch. I was hoping I'd found someplace phenomenal like the Tony's in EP, but I ended up sad and disappointed , actually throwing away the worst chicken parm sandwich I'be ever had. The chicken was as thin as a single slice of bologna; there was one slice of cheese and it was beyond dry with no more than a tablespoon of sauce. I ordered it because a caprese sub without fresh basil (he said they used "dried seasoning mix") sounded ridiculous. They do get their bread from Damatos, so someone there knows the business...but after trying the sandwich counter, I understand why I was the only customer during most places' lunchtime rush. read more

I came to Serrelli's specifically to taste the classic Italian Beef recipe that's been handed down and prepared for generations. Self proclaimed as Chicago's "Original Italian Beef"; I'm thinking back in 1934, this was obviously an innovative idea, let alone legendary for the Chicago area! Let me start by saying that I can not even imagine how stressful and difficult it must be for all restaurants and food related business to continue to survive in this new world caused by COVID-19. Some of these businesses have been open for more years than most of us have been alive. These businesses have struggled through down economies, depressions, wars but never have they had restrictions on them like the ones with COVID-19. Me and my family will continue to support local small business and I encourage everyone to do the same. The families who own and people who work at these businesses need help and they need it fast. I was seeking some premade eggplant parmigiana to take home to complete my dinner for my family. Wow did I hit the jack pot, I was able to get what was the best eggplant parmigiana I have ever had, and I have had a lot. Their red sauce or (gravy) as I like to call it was also one of the top 5, I have ever had. Everything they have in this gem of a deli and grocery store is authentic, priced right, and I am sure delicious. I did not have the chance to try one of the to go deli sandwiches, but I am sure they are great. My family has been coming to Serrelli's for Italian beef for as long as I remember because it is the best. There are a lot of grocery store options for Italian beef at home that are not bad, but none of them come close. When it comes down to it, it's a small grocery store that has many Italian products which mostly revolve around the beef, and they've been in business for almost 90 years so they're doing something right. The 5lb tub is around $30 and worth every penny, and you can get bread gardinera and everything else to make an unbelievably awesome beef sandwich. FAMILY PARTY SECRETS Hey you! Yeah I'm talking to you! You wanna know a secret! This place has the most amazing sliced Italian beef ever. Now the secret is out. My parents always hosted parties for there friends, family and employees. It was fun but it was a lot of work. When I was little I would get dragged all over the city to pick up supplies with my parents. I call this Sicilian style shopping, which meant you would drive all across town just to get the best items or ingredients. My parents were never one stop shoppers. As I got older, those lists were handed to me. Sometimes it would take me the whole day just to get everything. My parents made most of there food items but when it came to sliced Italian beef this was the place they went to. The largest container available was the 10 lbs of Italian Beef with juice. My parents never wanted to run out of food, so they always went for more then they needed. They would typically buy 20 to 30 lbs of beef for a family house party and 80 to 100 lbs for a company party. Now I must make a confession, I would sneak a few slices of cold beef while in the car. Hey, I was 16 years old and sitting next to 100 lbs of the most amazing Italian beef. Who was gonna miss two slices? I must admit it was hard to stop at two. It is one of the most tastiest beefs you will find. They have a great recipe with an amazing mix of spices and seasoning. So next time you want to throw a party and you wanna go Chicago style beef then this is the place. Your guests will think you are trying to be the next great beef place in the city. I am getting hungry just writing this review. I need to get in the car, pick up a container of beef, sample a slice for quality control & then throw a party. Ever since Serrelli's remodeled, the customer service has just not been the same. It is my opinion that deli meats and cheeses should not be cut on the same slicer... I do not like it when my cheese is cross-contaminated with meat juices and meat grease. When I requested that my cheese not be cut on the same deli slicer as the meats, the clerk told me flat out -- NO --. and refused to slice my cheese on the other slicer. I explained how I did not want bits of meat and the meat greases being spread all over my cheese and the clerk still refused. I love their beefs, but this experience has made me want to find a new beef spot. read more

This is such a neat Italian deli with some Mexican flare. Everyone was was super friendly to us. We loved exploring the isles while we waited for our fresh sandwiches to be made. Their beef is excellent, although I found it to be somewhat inconsistent as of late (bland). Great marinara, meat balls, sausage, and nicely stocked grocery store. It's no Jewel (and that is a good thing!) but you "could" find everything you need for a complete meal. Italian beef is very subjective, so in spite of the fact that the last few orders came in a little bland, I'm still giving them 5-stars because of the combination of great service (especially butcher) and array of other products. read more
