We arrived on time for our 6 pm reservation and asked if we could taste a couple of wines before ordering a glass. This is common practice in most restaurants, but our server told us we had to go to the tasting bar and pay for a tasting at a separate cost. We reluctantly went along and each chose a wine. I asked if we could buy a bottle to be consumed at the table, but was told that, although they could sell me a bottle, we could not open it or drink it in the restaurant, so we just ordered a glass of wine. We were quickly served our salads and bread board and placed our entree orders. From here on in it was totally downhill, It took over an hour to receive our food, while tables all around us with people who had arrived after we did were served, ate, and left. Our server didn't even come over to see if we were OK, wanted anything, etc. It's like we weren't there. When the food finally arrived my pork loin was dry and overcooked. My wife's pasta was fine, but nothing special; the dessert, a blueberry crumble, was excellent, but it was nearly 9 pm by the time we reached dessert. This was supposed to be a special birthday dinner, and we chose this place because of our past experience here, but it was a real let down this time. Considering how much better other winery restaurants in the area are, particularly Grand Pré, we'll avoid Luckett in the future.

Having the berry wines with ice cream came up, yes! Took home the mead, and the maple, to share with my bee and maple syrup buddy. We will enjoy them together. Thankful hubs was there to drive. Maybe this will help. Blomidon is a charming relatively small winery just a few minutes away from incredibly scenic Blomidon Provincial Park. They sell 9 white and red wines - several of which have won awards - an ice wine, and 2 sparkling wines. In the tasting room, you are permitted complimentary samples of 4 of their wines, but you must pay a nominal fee for each of the other wines you sample. Besides wine, there are a number of other souvenirs you can buy that are winery or Nova Scotia themed. The staff at Blomidon are very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Your visit and sampling will be an enjoyable experience.

It comes with 3 cheeses and there are only 3 options so if you don't like blue cheese, let them know when you order so they can give you more of one of the other two. The thing we found odd was the tacky Breton crackers. It would have been nice to have some kind of artisan crackers instead and perhaps some sort of a jam, jelly or spread. We found it to be a little tacky for $16. The service was a little bit in the middle and we waited around a while to even get a menu. We ordered the Grilled Watermelon Salad ($21.50). The menu describes it as grilled watermelon, fresh berries, red onion and mint on a bed of arugula. What arrived was essentially a bowl of arugula and spinach with red onion and a sprinkle of feta, and almost no watermelon to speak of. When we politely pointed this out, the second server who took the salad back was lovely about it and said she'd check with the kitchen. That's where it went downhill. She returned with the primary server, who was dismissive from the start. We were told they could add watermelon on the side, but only as an upcharge. We declined. We were then told we'd be charged for the original salad regardless. Fine, we said, charge us, but we don't need it back. Despite that, the salad reappeared at the table with a tiny cup of watermelon, and the response was a flat "well, it's already here." When we asked whether this is really what a watermelon salad is meant to be, since we've had this dish at plenty of other restaurants and it has never been arugula with a few cubes of watermelon hidden in it, the answer was that the watermelon is "just like the berries, a little topping." At that point we cleared our own plates onto the side table for them to collect. What needs to be said plainly is this: we were a group of 12 with a bill of around $700. Paying was never the issue, and a $21 salad is no big deal. But the audacity of the server to assume we were doing all this just to haggle a salad out of them was ridiculous. We can't tell a kitchen how to build their salad, and tastes vary. But the watermelon is named first in the dish, it arrived in nowhere near the quantity advertised, and being upsold to get the main ingredient is hard to defend. Speaking to paying customers that way is simply not acceptable. And of course, she did remember to add the 18% gratuity for her tremendous service. To top it off, we'd brought a cake to celebrate Father's Day and asked if we could cut it. We were told no outside food allowed, full stop. The Annapolis Valley has no shortage of excellent wineries where a family can actually feel welcome and enjoy the afternoon. We won't be returning to this one.

Across the valley from the Martock ski hills, it's a small winery/brewery, which also caters for all manner of events, including weddings. We visited on a mostly sunny, warmish August Friday at the start of the Labour Day weekend. Essentially it's a restaurant and a very pleasant one at that. There is a smallish bar/galley area inside, with a covered, all weather and all year round solarium attached, a small patio and lawn beyond that. They offer beer/cider and wine samplers which I'd strongly recommend. I went for the four reds they produce, and thoroughly enjoyed them all, especially the 1763 Unhinged. The menu is quite extensive, and we went for a pizza each, Bent Ridge Belly for me, Fig and Onion for the wife. Both were delicious and of generous size. I tried their ginger infused rough cider, which was excellent and quite novel. I was also treated to a gratis glass of the Maple Porter. The restaurant affords pleasant views across the valley and is nicely appointed, with a variety of seating and can cater for fairly large groups. Service was a delight and the eventual bill of almost exactly $100 not onerous by today's standards. Will definitely have to visit again. And this time I'll take a growler and buy some of their craft beer.
