I've been having intermittent problems with my clutch…read more Either I can't push the petal down, which prevents my car from starting, or I can push it down but the car stays in neutral: I can't put it into gear. Last Friday it failed three times. The first time was on a steep incline at the entrance to a parking garage of a building at which I had a job interview. I was stuck in place, and couldn't drive through the gate. The second time was on the way home on Mopac South, in stop-and-go traffic. After sitting in neutral, I couldn't push the pedal down to put the transmission back in gear. The third time was in the Whole Foods parking lot. I was able to push down the clutch pedal and start the car, but it was stuck in neutral. I told Cap's that the clutch problem was intermittent when I called this morning, and they asked me to drive down. The clutch worked on the way there. I took a cab home, which cost $40. They called in the afternoon and said they couldn't reproduce or find the problem, unsurprisingly, since the problem is intermittent and I was able to drive there. Since the issue has to be the clutch or transmission, I asked them to replace the clutch. The car's 27 years old, so having a new clutch would be worthwhile even if that didn't fix the problem. They refused, then the owner said they would do it and replace the throw-out bearing, if I signed a disclaimer stating the problem might not be fixed by by the new clutch and bearing. I said if that happened I'd just get a rebuilt transmission. However, when I spoke to their desk person again, he said they'd changed their minds and wouldn't replace the clutch. So, I'm at risk of again being stuck on a highway, on a steep incline, ..., and of being unable to commute to and from work. $80 for two cab rides for nothing. Very unhappy with their refusal to do the work I asked for, despite my willingness to sign any disclaimer they wished.
