I WISH. I could leave 0 stars. Do. Not. Trust. Your. Loved. Ones. With. These. MURDERERS. Nurses bullied us into letting them take my grandfather for "a few days" because they wanted to manage his symptoms better. He was taken last night and we got a call this morning that he died. They didn't feed him. They didn't give him his medications. They didn't check his oxygen levels because they "don't usually do that" but they PROMISED THEY WOULD BECAUSE IT WOUKD MAKE US FEEL BETTER FOR HIS OXYGEN TO BE STABILIZED. They pumped him up with morphine when we specifically said we only give it to him once a day before sleep. They took him away from us to leave him in a room by himself and die. read more

The facilities are very clean and attractive---that said, Journeycare promised that our Mom would be looked at and be pain free in her last days. So far, we've had to chase the nurses down to administer simple treatment like providing some moisture to her mouth-which is cracked, dry, and very painful. Mind you-not meds-but simple hospice care. I'm expressing these concerns not only as a son-but also as a physician. I walked in on the daughter complaining for the second day. Mom has only been there barely two days. Journey care----please provide services you promised. read more

My 86-year old father received home hospice care for nearly two months. Our family (particularly my mom) wanted him to spend his final days at home. However, his being overweight and suffering from dementia made caring for him a challenge. We realized we needed professional help for both his sake and ours. JourneyCare came in a provided the structure and assistance that we needed - particularly assisting him with daily living activities in a caring and motivating manner. They even got him bathed after refusing to do so for nine months. A few days before my dad passed, JourneyCare discussed end-of-life signs and symptoms with us. When he started displaying them, that awareness helped us to avoid panic and just be there for him. His end was peaceful, which all we ever wanted. After he passed, JourneyCare helped us navigate all of the logistics that were unfamiliar to us. Again, we are very thankful and appreciative of the support they provided. read more

They gave my mom peace and comfort during her last days. The staff were extremely attentive and knew how to minimize pain and discomfort. The treated my mom and our family very well. The rooms are very clean and nice, and the common spaces are cozy and comfortable. Obviously these situations are devastating, but I'm glad my dad chose this facility. read more

We used Midwest for in-home hospice for my mom who had terminal cancer. Nurses were compassionate. Responsiveness of entire staff was top notch. No dissatisfaction there. But we had grave dissatisfaction with the actual services that were provided. They promote themselves as: "supporting the whole person: mind, body, and soul..." They also claim to: "As doctors and specialists focus on treating your condition, the rest of you -- your physical, mental and spiritual well-being -- can get eclipsed..." You can verify on their Website. But what we experienced was actually NOT either. Nearly 100% of their focus was on medicating my mother on high doses of pills. A few of these meds were brand new; within hours of her transfer from the hospital to her home, she had a new mix of meds that were excessive. For instance, she was prescribed HALDOL, an anti-psychotic, which was not necessary based on several doctors that reviewed her case. She NEVER TOOK HALDOL ever in her life and not in the hospital. She was also being adminstered antianxiety medicine through an eye dropper about every 4 hours. What's maddening is that we were doing this - per their direction - even when she was sleeping or groggy or basically out of it. My mom was dying, there was not evading that. But her affect - her ability to connect with me and the rest of my family - within hours of her transfer to Midwest for in-home hospice was dramatically different. We lost contact with her. Ultimately, I WISH MIDWEST PALLIATIVE & HOSPICE CARE would have spent more time taking care of my mom while she was dying in the ways that they say they do "mental and spiritual...". Things like physical touch, music therapy, singing, pet therapy... ANYTHING but the drugs. I could have just called up her primary care for a bag of drugs if that is what we wanted. It was not. And it is not what you should be expected either. MY RECOMMENDATION TO EACH OF YOU: Ask questions. Demand answers. Request treatments and therapies that they are actively using that fall outside of medications. You have rights to speak up and have as much quality time as possible with your loved one. read more

There comes a time in life when families and health care professionals have to make the call: is this treatment improving the patient's life or prolonging his or her dying? I went through this nine years ago with my dad, and now have the sadness of seeing my mother-in-law (no jokes, please, she's a wonderful lady) out the same dark door. The family met with a MD, RN and social worker from Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care center this morning. You would be surprised at how warm and upbeat these people are under the circumstances. End of life decisions can be confusing and fraught with emotion -- it helps to have a guide who can show the way without imposing any judgments. read more

Although there were definitely some blips in communication, we overall had a good experience for my young husbands hospice. The blips were when we engaged with different nurses we learned of different available things (books we should have gotten, etc). Lucinna was my husbands nurse and she was kind, attentive and genuine. She spent as much time as needed with us and educated us on what else we could do to make my husband more comfortable. We also saw Alice and she was efficient as well. We would overall recommend their services. read more

Now called Journey Care I am very disappointed with the lack of follow through throughout the approximately 7 weeks of which my husband was receiving in home hospice. I had an excellent experience with MW with my mother in 2008 and the 2 experiences could not have been more different. My husband had ALS, basically immobile and could not speak. I was told all his meds would continue to be covered but not true. I was put on hold for at least 3 to 5 minutes when I would call off hours and would wait as long as 2 hours for a nurse. The primary nurse was the only one who seemed to understand ALS and the nurses who did come were unprepared with supplies. I can go on and on and will be addressing in writing. But suffice to say the bereavement services were non existent for individual counseling. 2 days after he died I received a phone call from social worker of which I don't remember as I was probably still in shock. No follow up after. I requested pet visits and music visits from day one and on several occasions and when finally delivered it was too late for my husband to appreciate. Overall my concerns were dismissed and the "end of life" issues that they claim to address were not. In the end my husband became whiter and colder by the time the nurse came at death and noone was with me before death and no visits after. The guilt I feel for not doing everything I could for my husband is immeasurable and when I learn of others hospice experiences it brings to light at how he was failed by this organization and the family as a whole . Considering my insurance paid for the DME and respiratory therapist I would say that MW made money off of us. Overall very disappointed and in retrospect very angry at myself for not being more vigilant. This is the photo of my husband 2 days before death when the hospice finally provided the pet visit. What is difficult is that people are using this service during the most difficult times of their lives. Sometimes anger can be misplaced. I write this as I sit in the short term JourneyCare facility in Barrington while my sister, only in her 40's, transitions to death. We initially brought my sister home from the hospital, after learning that there was no more we could do medically for my sister and JourneyCare was their with all the equipment and drugs we needed at home. Nurses who visited us during her brief time at home were compassionate and spent time with my mom to help her with the duties of caring for my sister and were always there longer than I expected. When the pain was too much for my sister to manage, my mom called the nurse at 10pm and she was there immediately to help evaluate and help my mom through the decision to bring her to Barrington, where every nurse, CNA and staff treated her with kindness and respect. They helped our family through the tears and fear, making sure we were comfortable as well. They saw that I was sleeping on the couch and brought in a cot, they continually asked if we needed anything. Every time someone touched my sister they said her name and what they were doing, they made sure that she was comfortable and if i wanted something changed even after they just moved her they were there to do it again. A family member was here almost every minute of every day and we were amazed at the consistency of the care. Today, Nurse Jeanine, who was our home nurse, stopped by to check on my sister and give my mom a hug. With my sister's illness I have seen different levels of care and couldn't say enough good things about JourneyCare. I realize that expectations and experiences are different and I can tell you from the last two years of dealing with doctors, an aggressive disease and clinical trials, my expectations for care are extremely high, I have had nurses removed from my sister's care in the past and have never had to even worry about it here. I thank all the nurses and staff that have compassionately and expertly cared for my sister. read more

First, foremost and last: JourneyCare - and EVERYONE who works there - exceeded every single expectation I had of the hospice experience. My mom had given everything she had to cancer for over two years, but the time arrived when hospice was inevitable. The folks at JourneyCare... from the specialist on the phone, to the intake, to every single nurse and doctor... they were all INCREDIBLE. From the moment my mother arrived, they treated her with the greatest compassion and respect possible. And they extended that to me and all of my family. They made one of the most painful experiences bearable. I cannot say enough about all the staff at JourneyCare. I will be forever grateful for the care and respect they showed my mother. My dad has been receiving hospice care at home through Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center. Their dignified and kind care has helped my dad go on a "bucket list" trip with family and be cared for at home for four months. He has been alert and they have really listened to what he wanted and what we want for him. He is now in the Marshak Family Hospice Pavillon where the kind and dignified care is such a blessing. I work in the Chicago area as a nurse and care coordinator, and frequently have to refer patients to hospice through Internal Medicine. I've also worked with hospice as a son, nephew, and friend, especially in the past few years as I too get older and those around me are beginning to pass. I can say without any hesitation that Journeycare has one of the finest teams I've worked with. From the initial referral to consistent care and follow up for a myriad of issues large and small, they come through every time. One example is a recent referral I placed for a PCP through Internal Medicine. The intake team picked up my phone call within 3 rings, they asked me a few extra questions, and after receiving the referral, called me within 30 minutes stating they had reviewed and an evaluation by an intake nurse would occur within 60-90 minutes. From the time I initially called to the time of evaluation was only about 2 hours. I was astounded. Not to say it can happen this quickly in every instance, but the responsiveness was amazing. I also appreciated that they took the time to call me with a confirmation of the order and gave me a realistic timeframe for follow up, very professional, and efficient. As a clinician, and also a family member that has personally used Journeycare services, I would have no hesitation in recommending them to everyone. Going through end of life care is such a personal and difficult process, but the team at Journeycare makes it easy to understand and has a full team to support the entire family as they focus on keeping their loved one comfortable and helping them to pass peacefully. read more

I am in Healthcare. I can not believe what Journey Care is doing to my friends mother. After 5 days they are kicking her our. Is she not dying fast enough? They have threatened to file trespassing charges and with draw care if she does not leave. She is terminally ill and failing due to metastatic cancer. Can you imagine someone doing this to a loved one. She has only used 10 days of her Medicare Buckets and has plenty of days to cover. So why are they kicking her out? I would not recommend this facility to a dying dog. read more

Some of the experiences that we had with this company were good and some were bad. Currently, they made a mistake and we are being billed a lot of money for something that they were supposed to provide. They are not resolving the issue appropriately and are trying to avoid having to pay for their error. A good company (who has admitted their mistake) would then offer, not be forced, to pay for what they were supposed to pay for in the first place. Also I found it inappropriate that a large portion of their materials are soliciting donations. Their office is a multi-million dollar building and also shows how much money they are taking in by providing end-of-life care. read more

Part of my displeasure with JourneyCare is with the situation. However I did not feel it right that the JourneyCare Rep handled the situation told me that my understanding of how hospice works is wrong, rather than explaining how it works. Also she said that the posters on Yelp were liars when I brought up concerns of people not having pain medications due to not having 24/7 pharmacy available... I was understandably upset towards her, and since the person with POA already signed the papers she did not deem it necessary to converse with me and stated she could walk away as the papers are already signed. The plan was for my Mom to go home and treat her there. The Dr. gave her extreme drugs such as haldol and she rapidly began to decline. The Social Worker/advocate was not helping me advocate bringing Mom home even though that is what my Mom wanted. She then languished another 10 days without food or water before she passed. My dear grandmother spent three days at the hospice facility. My first visit there i got into the elevator with a lovely woman who worked there and escorted me personally to my grandmas room, immediately making me feel comfortable she was in good hands. The head doctor there was absolutely amazing, taking the time to talk to each family member, reassuring us with kind and thoughtful words. The facility was extremely quiet and serene a far cry from the loud noises at the hospital. The building is extremely beautiful with a family room with a fireplace books,magazines, snacks, and a station for children. We also were able to connect with other families there in the same hard situation. Midwest really made a horrible situation easier and left a sense of reassurance among our family. read more

I have had only good experiences with my dad's residential stay at JourneyCare in April, 2017. The facility is spa-like, beautiful and clean. The staff was Completely and highly attentive; caring not only for my dad but for our family as well. They could not have been nicer. When my dad had passed, his body was draped in the American flag for his departure from hospice. This was particularly moving to me. Though not born in this country, my dad served in the military and loved this country. Thank you JourneyCare for helping make an incredibly sad experience as pleasant and as meaningful as possible. I noticed on our last morning there that Sonny, the mini-horse, was due to arrive the following week to visit with patients. My dad was not only an avid horseman but had a horse named Sonny. Our family recently spent 10 days in hospice care at Midwest for my brothers final journey. All I can say is that the care and respect he received there was top notch. The staff and nurses were truly committed to making sure Bills needs and comfort level were always meet. Sure, some staff are better than others, but after spending many days there, as well as nights, I can personally say I would highly recommend Midwest to anyone else facing similar life ending choices for themselves or loved ones. Signed my mom up for palliative care had meeting with nurse signed contract and never heard from them again. Then reached out to them they called and said we have a nurse in the area on such n such. I said great I'll be there. They called me back in 10 minutes and said oh it was for a different patient same name. We'll call you back..never called me back..very disappointed will not pursue this organization any further. read more

Unfortunately the excellent experience I had with Midwest during my mother's time with them, both at home and the pavilion, after her death is a horse of a different color. The inappropriately named "bereavement counselors" offered VERY little of their time, I received pat advice such as go for a walk, meditate, take care of yourself, eat right, read a book, bla bla bla. This so called 'counseling' is something they have to provide as a part of the Medicare guidelines and as such so minimal and formulaic as to be insulting to me as I grieve and mourn the loss of my mother. Also I found out after mother's death one of the LCSW's called a family member and said untrue and inappropriate things about me, this hurt the worst of all because I thought he was supposed to be there for ME. I received apologies from the director(s) and that is very little solace compared to the damage done. read more

I waited to post this, and I would say we had a disappointing experience in Georgia with a different agency as well. It is a difficult area to make families happy in such a tough time. With that said other than just conversations, we never received a binder organized to discuss what we will go through, or any kind of a medication log, or a communication log for our hired caregivers to follow and keep up with changes. I had to make my own (the hired 24/7 care organization didnt give us anything either). It wasn't easy, so we called to get answers to questions as things were happening, and we were told we call to much. There were some very helpful people, very helpful... but it was not as helpful as we would have hoped for. Yes, they helped and we appreciated it. But as experts, we didnt feel they brought their best game, and there is never a redo on this. Ask questions, yes, but sometimes you don't know what your questions are until you are in the thick of it all. read more

My Dad was receiving both Palliative and Hospice care for the past several months prior to his passing in April. The care, compassion and concern for his well being was evident with everyone we spoke to in person and on the phone. I have nothing but the most positive things to say about our experience with Midwest Palliative in September of 2014. We had hospice visits at home for a few weeks which changed when my mother fell at home. My mother was a very difficult person as well as independent. When she enter the center she was not aware and never opened her eyes again during remainder of her life. The entire staff was very respectful, gentle, kind and never so much as touched my mother without telling her their name and what they were going to do. They were open to ideas I had regarding pain medication when I didn't feel my mother was receiving enough of it. The facility itself is beautiful and has a gentle feeling. They have followed up with me to see if I needed anything several times. read more

My sister arrived on Dec 18th. She was gravely ill and didn't have much time left. She passed away on 12-25-17. Christmas day. The only phone call I received was the nurse telling me she passed. I don't understand how 8 days later still no phone call from them to offer condolences or comfort to myself and grieving family. This is inexcusable. I would never recommend this facility to anyone. The lack of empathy proves that they didn't care enough to call. Especially during Holiday time. Which is most diffucult. read more

After receiving some inappropriate messages on my original posting from someone who appears to be is strongly connected or employed by Midwest Palliative and Hospice, I am re-posting and re-rating the agency, as well as providing more explanation in my experience and rationale behind the rating. In my opinion, hospice is an important and underutilized service. I am thankful that my family member was able to utilize hospice as their health declined. I wish more health care providers would educate their patients on the option of hospice and the wonderful benefits associated with this service. The social worker and chaplain I worked with at Midwest Palliative were excellent and deserve 5 stars, however the reason I am only giving 2 stars is because a few workers continuously said they would do something more than once, which didn't get completed until I made a phone call from more than 2000 miles away (Yes, I am originally from the Midwest, but traveled back and forth to visit my family member working with Midwest Palliative). I am irritated by and intolerant to the act of not following through. To make a comparison, you wouldn't give a high rating to a restaurant where your server failed to deliver your meal after they said they would bring it several times. I don't want someone to read this and not consider hospice, I just want to make sure that people receive better and more consistent service from ANY agency they choose to go with. Additionally, I am not writing this to get someone in trouble at this agency, but this rating should influence everybody affiliated with and not affiliated with Midwest Palliative to strive to improve on following through on the simple things they commit to completing. Unfortunately I won't be using them for other family members if hospice is needed because of my above explaination/ experience, evne though there are a few excellent 5 star people there. Besides, probably after my posting, there won't ever be an issue with follow through, but then again would you really send a friend or someone you cared about to a place with only 2 stars, or a restaurant where the server failed to bring you your food when they told you more than once they'd be right back! read more

My father lived the last 5 days of his life at Journey Care. Those days were some of the saddest, sorrowful days I've even experienced but the staff there were absolutely wonderful. The place seems brand new, impeccably clean, comfortable, and very accommodating to the family. I was very blessed to have my father here because it was a 10 min drive from work and I was able to visit during lunch. One of the nice things about Journey is the little details in order to make the place peaceful, cozy and comfortable. There's a guy that plays an acoustic guitar in the hallway which is so relaxing! His music filled us with tranquility in a time when our lives were in such turmoil. They have aromatherapy which we requested in order to make dad more comfortable. All those little things were great but by far the STAFF was absolutely WONDEFUL! I can't say enough about the staff at Journey. The doctors, the nurses, the volunteers, great people I'll never forget. If you're able to get your loved one in this place, don't hesitate. read more

Journey Care was recommended by my mother's oncologist, so we decided to use them when we found out she had terminal lung cancer. Her nurse was great and got her the meds and all the medical equipment she might need. My issue with Journey Care is they asked my my mom when she is at her final stage of life do you want to stay in your own home or go into a hospital facility. My mother chose home. When the final days did come, I do not feel they lived up to their promise. We were told she would have 24 hour nursing care. Well that was not the case. The nurse on call said she was not at that stage yet and that she could last for days in the condition she was in. The head of the assisted living was so upset with this decision that she came in to discuss this with the nurse. I really did not need this tension at this moment in my life. The hospice nurse finally said he would move my mother to a hospice facility which was not what my mother wanted. She had lung cancer which had spread to her bones and was in excruciating pain. I refused to move her and told him I would take care of her. He finally agreed that he would call in a 24 nurse, but my mother passed away before the nurse arrived. I think his original judgement call was the wrong decision. She passed away within 5 hours of him being there. I also want to mention, I do not believe they controlled my mothers pain. She was in severe pain until the very end. All of this haunts me to this day. The male nurse who was there her last night, showed no sign of compassion. I have heard good things about Hospice, but from my experience I would stay clear of Journey Care. I called Journey Care to voice my concerns, but I was called back by her nurse. I think I should be able to talk to someone with more authority so this does not happen to anyone else. I still have anxiety over the last days of my mom's life. I wish I could have done more and I know Hospice should have done more! read more

They came highly recommended by my Doctor who used them when it was Midwest Hospice and Palliative care. I have had nothing but misinformation and uncaring attitudes. The initial consultation was great and led me to believe I would get great and thorough care for my Mother. When the nurse practitioner Simona came for the initial visit it was completely opposite. She spent no time telling us what she could do for my Mother, only what she could not do for her. I called and asked for a manager so we could try someone else that was more sympathetic and caring but were told this was the only person in the Chicago area we were in. We are very disappointed and now have to start over looking for help. read more

They are unbelievable with their unmatched care of me and consideration and attention to detail for me. A person could NOT ask for more. These people are the VERY BEST at what they do ! We contracted with this agency when my mom was in Northwestern Hospital and they oversaw her last days in a rehab facility. Once Mom was out of the hospital and in a facility, the hospice people refused to continue to give her IV fluids. It was not their policy to continue to give fluids, they said. After a short period with no fluids, my mom died. If we had known that this was their "policy" and that they would not bend on that, or any other "policy" though we begged them--they continually offered to quit, but never to change what they were doing--we would not have let them take over the case. Not only were they inflexible, but we found their manner strange and ghoulish, as if they were members of a cult. We think of them as "the people who killed our mom." Some of them were nicer than others, but there is something fundamentally wrong with a system that seems designed not to palliate someone's death but to hasten it. read more

Horrible company. I ended hospice service for my mom, as her health condition was improving. She did, however, develop some skin wounds as often is the case in the elderly. She is a resident at a senior care facility and that facility is not licensed to do "wound care". After I officially ended hospice service I attempted to send an independent Medicare provider to attend to my mom's wounds. I was informed by Medicare that Journeycare failed to do the paperwork necessary to end the service date. Medicare forbids the Medicare nursing provider to care for my mom as she is still "under hospice care". A person cannot be under both types of care at the same time. After my numerous phone calls to them all the way up to their CEO as well as Medicare and the Medicare provider, it has now been over a MONTH and Journeycare still has not resolved the issue even though they ADMITTED it was an "error in their finance department". I have repeatedly asked them to send over a wound care nurse to tend to my mother's skin and they have still NOT done so. Can you imagine a company that professes to care for the elderly and knowingly allow her to suffer? Try another company. read more
