Working out at JOP is, well, a joy! Space is inviting, there are many different classes all day and the teachers I have taken classes with have been awesome. There are a few things that I'd change, such as more time between classes and perhaps re imagine the shoe / bag / changing area. As an 82 year old female new to Bellingham, WA I was looking for a happy place to continue my exercise program to keep a strong CORE. I found my spot at JOY of Pilates. I took private classes with Lexi, who gently walked me through using the reformer which looked daunting to me at first! Then, I found a group class with Linda and learned more there. Linda retired and now I have wonderful Beverly as my instructor and she is excellent. She knows all the muscles and how they work. She is very encouraging and kind. read more

The place is a great place for Pilates, but I had a real issue with being charged incorrectly and the owner being passive aggressive about it. She wasn't polite and made insensitive untrue comments that made it not worthwhile for my mental health to go back. Especially when there's so many other places around to get great Pilates. It's really too bad and didn't have to be that way. read more

I am not a resident of Bellingham (or WA) unfortunately so I cannot be a member of this fabulous studio, but I did get to attend a class last week. The instructor, Beverly, was amazing. She is knowledgeable and thorough, but even better teaches very functional exercises that are essential for old ladies like me. She is fun and motivating. Unfortunately they don't offer 10 stars! Moved to Bellingham 6 months ago and heard about JOP so decided to check it out and found it to be one of the best decisions I have made. JOP is not your typical large impersonal gym. The focus is on creating a small community feel committed to health and well-being through strength-training and aerobics. I cannot say enough about the professionalism of the owner Ella and the trainers! They are caring, knowledgeable and it's obvious they love what they do and creating a fun environment! I have been taking Pilates classes at this studio since January and have had an overwhelmingly positive experience! All of the instructors are kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. I took classes exclusively with Kaitlyn for a while, and she is a wonderful teacher. I've also started taking weekend Zumba classes with Allison, which really help me get my heart rate up. JOP also does cute promotions and giveaways every now and then, which are super fun. So glad I found this studio! read more

For the past 6 years my husband and I go weekly to the Better Bones Balance class that is offered every week day at 10:30am. Each instructor has their own style of care and technique making it always interesting and beneficial to our old bones. We enjoy all the teachers for this particular class. Ladies & Gentlemen. If your back hurts try Pilates at JOP!! My back pain started 2 years ago (bulging disk, ouch!) and this past January I decided to give JOP a try. What a great decision! This past weekend I did a 3 mile hike with no back pain for the first time in 2 years. Thrilling!! The teachers at JOP really do promote the individuality of each person. They do not push you to "pain" and always advise each client to listen to their own body. Slowly over the past 9 months I've become stronger and definitely can tell my posture has changed for the better. Focus on the CORE! I consistently do the Reformer classes, but recommend an extra investment in the private classes. The 10 private sessions jump started me to success! Pilates is good for the body. I am a total believer in Pilates! As an active 49-year-old who found that free weights and mindless "stretching" wasn't appropriate or effective anymore, I needed something different. Joy of Pilates was the answer. My body feels great. I get an awesome, targeted, and safe workout. Strength, stretching, and cardio are all part of the package. I can't say enough about how much I appreciate the benefits of Pilates and the Joy of Pilates welcoming atmosphere. This is a great place to work out if you want to feel like you're part of a family AND get a workout! We went there because they also have step aerobics, which is harder and harder to find these days. They have punch cards for classes, you need not sign up on a contract. The owner, Ella, is actively involved in teaching and is a very good step instructor (as other the other step instructors), with fun routines and good music. Never boring, but not "too difficult". I've been taking classes at Joy for over 5 years and it is just the best place! All the instructors are fun, knowledgeable, and really helpful! They always meet you at whatever level you're at; challenging you when needed, but also taking into consideration any injuries or special circumstances you might have. I usually take mat classes, and I do the monthly plan, so I can take as many classes per week as I want for the same price! So basically, if I go to more than 2 classes per week, it's like the additional classes are free! Plus, it gives me discounts on clothing and props, discounts on Reformer classes and a free t-shirt every year! So many of the people who go there, as well as instructors, have become good friends and I really look forward to seeing them each week. I highly recommend this studio (and Pilates in general) as a great way to stay flexible, strong & in good health. It has been a life-changer for me! read more

I just finished another fabulous class at Joy. I feel so good, I need to share! I have always been self conscious in group exercise situations. There is something about this studio that takes that anxiety away. Many things actually! The space is clean, bright, roomy, and decorated with rotating local artists. All of the instructors are caring, knowledgeable, and well qualified. The other students are supportive; there is a really great feeling of camaraderie. I have been a student for several months and I feel more vibrant and healthy. I am getting stronger and I have less pain in my back and wrist. I am a florist, so my body often aches. The strength I am gaining at Joy is making it easier for me at work everyday. I very highly recommend Joy of Pilates to everyone! read more

This is a wonderful studio. I've lived in many places and been to many different pilates, yoga, and other fitness studios. Joy of Pilates is a cut above anywhere I've been. Excellent, kind teachers. Exceptional, personal service to make sure you're in the classes you need. A beautiful, airy but warm, colorful space. So many personal touches by Ella, the owner, that lift your spirit if you're having a bad or even just a "meh" day. Also, and this is important, the studio doesn't have a competitive vibe. There are no mirrors, so you have to be tuned into yourself and your teacher's instructions, not how you look (or how you look in comparison to other students). Wrote a review...did not show up, so writing again! We are part time residents of Birch Bay and had been looking for a while to find the right Pilates studio for us. From the minute you walk through the door of Joy of Pilates, you feel completely welcomed. After trying a few of the Pilates studios in the area, we are completely sold on the professionalism and knowledge of the instructors here. We vary our program with one reformer class and two duetts during the week. We are taking from both Ella and Jen and can say that they are both very knowledgable, friendly, and fun instructors. I feel sure the other instructors are good, as well, but, we can absolutely report that these two instructors are fantastic. Also, FYI...my husband and I both began our Pilates practice at the age of 59. We have both been active in other forms of work out, but find the best results from Pilates, and specifically enjoy working on the reformer. You will get your best results when you do the movements with precision...and that is where the one-on-one instruction is so important. How many other exercise routines can you say, "the hour is really over already?" and actually be disappointed that it is!?! You will not be disappointed in this studio. We are so very happy to have found our Pilates "home." read more

This is the most welcoming, warm and friendly Studio I have ever been to. The instructors are absolutely incredible! Oh, gosh this place is great! I had dropped by for a tour and to discuss getting my strength back after an injury and now 2 months later I am hooked. Ella, Jenn, and Sarah have been working with me weekly to get my balance and strength back .I so look forward to each session ( normally would have found excuse to dropout by now) and can feel progress as I garden and hike , without the aches that had sidelined me. Give this place a try it is so relaxed and focused at the same time. And I haven't felt the need to buy new clothes to fit in...yeah for leggings and a tee shirt.... The best!!! read more
