Hidden gem in Williamsburg. First and foremost, after my first visit, I will happily make the 1.5 hour commute from The Bronx to see Britt. I found her online and explained my giant mess of a hair style (self bleaching for years, really bad breakage and even worse haircut by a top salon in Harlem...). She wasn't deterred. I came in and she colour corrected my bad bleach and grow out. My hair instantly looked healthier and better. On my following visit she completely revitalized my hair with the most gorgeous, perfectly installed micro-bead hair extensions. I look like a brand new person. Even better was her attention to detail and her "perfectionist" tendanacies - she made sure I had no more damage and my hair literally looks like it was never the dumpster fire it used to be prior to meeting her. I have gone to stylist Britt Bird twice. Her work itself is fine, but I've found her to be unprofessional, unreliable and rude. During my first appointment (which was a color correction, already a lengthy process and I'm paying by the hour) she was eating nachos, drinking wine and Facetiming with her friends all while doing my hair. It felt very unprofessional, but my hair turned out fine. The second time, I had scheduled a 12 p.m. Saturday appointment about two weeks in advance. The services would take about four hours, and cost upwards of $300 including tip. The morning of the appointment, she Instagram-messaged me asking to push the appointment back to 1 p.m. Then, a while later, asked again to push it back to 1:30 p.m. I obliged, but had to cancel other appointments. At that point, I wasn't sure if she was even going to show up at 1:30 so I messaged her asking if she will be there, and if it would be possible to get any sort of discount because of all of the changes. She became rude and told me to cancel, despite the fact that she basically missed our entire appointment. I told her I will not be returning. Her work is fine, but in the future I will be going to a stylist and salon that is reliable, professional and values my time. read more

Just wanted to update my rating. Went to Brittany to have lavender/purple hair, which was gorgeous, but then decided the next day that it wasn't me. I was really nervous to reach out to Brittany to ask her if she could take the purple out and just make it brown, but Brittany didn't make me feel guilty at all! She completely understood that I didn't feel like the color was me, and was happy to change it for me. I attached a photo of my hair afterwards. Brittany treats her clients like close friends and is always happy to have a chat about anything from dogs to social justice issues. Will be going back next month for a touch up. read more

But I can say that for the first time ever, I didn't feel judged or ridiculed for having a hair mishap. I've had experiences where a hair stylist spends nearly 30 minutes reprimanding me, sucking their teeth and touching my hair, just to say there's nothing they can do to help it. I had been looking for a salon for a while and heard through a friend to try Deluxe and based on it's awesome reviews I made an appointment with Thomas this week. While I like my cut I don't feel I would go back. A haircut to me is 50% cut and 50% customer service. It felt like he didn't want to be cutting my hair the whole time I was there. The extent of his entire conversation with me was "Where do you live and how'd you hear about the salon?" I was charged $78, which I expected, but then told as I was walking out that he normally charges $95 and this was just a first time thing. Not sure if he was having a bad day, but I enjoy a little friendly conversation and feeling good if I'm spending that kind of money. read more

I just got my hair cut by Tom and it was the best haircut I've had in over 4years; no lie! I took in a couple photos but he did such an awesome job of making it my own cut. He made sure we were both on the same page about what I wanted. I've been growing my hair out for a year and really wanted to keep the length but have some style. He did such a perfect job!! I desperately needed a haircut and this salon was conveniently located a block from my house so I decided to try it. Mind you, I am very picky with my hair and I am certainly hesitant to try new places. The cut came out to be $78 which I normally don't mind paying when the service is impeccable. This wasn't the case. Thomas cut my hair and although I like my haircut, he seemed irritated and quit unfriendly. I can't say the service was rushed, but he really didn't take the time to ask me what I wanted or to make sure I was content with the haircut. Not to mention that as he was working on me, he was simultaneously working on some other girl's color. I'm sorry but if I'm paying that kind of price, I want all attention to be on me. The blow out wasn't impressive. I could have done the same in 10 minutes or less with my curler. As I was checking out, I was told that Thomas' cuts are normally $90... no thanks. I don't think I'll be coming back. I rather go to Jean-Claude Biguine where I know I'll get quality service for the same price. read more

I see Joy, the main stylist/owner, and she has serious cutting skill. I've been going here two years and haven't been disappointed. The cuts are beautiful and she specializes in razor cuts. The cuts aren't cheap, but they don't look cheap either. The place is so laid back--none of the Manhattan snobbery or typical Williamsburg hipster attitude. They're really accommodating too--I recently called on a Tuesday desperately needing my hair colored and my husband needed a hair cut. before my high school reunion on Friday Joy squeezed both of us in on Wednesday night while working on someone w/ highlights because she was leaving for vacation the following week and knew we'd have to wait til she got back--how many stylists would do that?! My husband's cut was great and every single person I talked to at the reunion loved my hair color---thanks all around to Joy!! Julie and Sarah are two other stylists @ Deluxe. Sarah did this fierce graduated bob for someone while I was getting my color done--seriously amazing cut and it she spent time making sure it was precise and even. I made note that if Joy was unavailable I'd see Sarah. I've also seen Julie do two great men's cuts (and she's got gorgeous tattoos). Basically, there's a lot of skill here and it's very relaxed. The cuts grow out nicely so you don't have to be completely dedicated to going every two months. And bang trims are free--men can also get neck, side burn, and bang trims for free as well! They carry Bumble & Bumble products but are not pushy about them at all. I've never been told I use the wrong product or anything like that. If I have questions, they answer and offer suggestions. Being a typical Asian, I've always had long, very fine, relatively flat hair. And doesn't matter what I do to it - perm, curl, etc. In a few weeks' time, LIKE MAGIC, it reverts back to as if I did absolutely nothing at all. So earlier this year, on impulse, I cut off 12 inches and got myself short hair ^_^. What fun it was for awhile but then I realized dammit - every 6 weeks, I needed a trim...or I land in that awkward "not really long but not exactly short" un-descript weird phase...not so much fun. Into this dilemma walks Andy from Deluxe Salon. I decided to try it since I had a dealist coupon and his shop in WIlliamsburg was not that out of the way for me (I would go now even if it was). The salon itself is tiny but spacious inside with chic gray walls and a pretty chandelier on the ceiling. Andy was friendly and patient, and he somehow managed to cut my hair so that 6 weeks later, it still looked nice! Kudos. EXTREMELY happy with my first visit to Deluxe Salon! I've dyed my hair black several times over the passed 3 years so I can't believe that Josephine was able to accomplish such a light and beautiful ash brown with blonde tones after just one visit. She was very open and honest about the process and explained I may not be able to get the desired look first time around...so I wasn't expecting to leave the salon with full satisfaction. After a few hours and a blow out, I couldn't believe how happy I was. Not only is this color a GREAT base for going lighter, I'm actually happy with the tone and color! I wouldn't mind keeping it this way for a while before building on it. Absolutely NO brassy or red tones! Completely even and everything flows nicely. Andy Starkweather is an excellent stylist - confident, relaxed, and friendly. He always seems to know exactly the look that I want, and i'm always more than satisfied with the end result. He's also great about suggesting the right products and making sure I know exactly how to maintain my hair so that it looks the same as the day he cut it. Truthfully, I don't think that I can trust anyone else and like many, have followed him from the 2 previously salons he's worked at. It's always the highlight of my day to go get my hair cut with Andy. Additionally, Deluxe is homey, quaint, and unpretentious. I'm not sure what it is with me, but every time I go to get a haircut, I walk in feeling and looking like hangover haggard hell. Despite that, Deluxe and Marcel always seem to cure overly caffeinated, spacey me. I'm always greeted by someone who can obviously tell what I'm going through, because I'm always instantly offered water, coffee, or tea and a comfy place to sit and chill. Then! When Marcel arrives, the conversation and the giggles get going as does the obligatory 'what to do with that hair on yo head' discussion. I'm picky about my bangs, but don't always know what to do with the rest of my hair and have had variations on the same cut for quite some time now. Marcel listened, figured out what would work with my face, and made it happen. He also did a great job on a single process color, making the perfect suggestions and helping me feel comfortable with what was about to happen. Having dyed my hair for many years now and done many strange but also wonderful things with it, my hair was kind of a wreck and as Marcel mentioned I have "stringy doodles". Well, he worked magic on my lil doodles not only with the color, but with the cut as well. AHH this haircut!!! I NEVER instantly love a haircut and never do I wake up the next morning so in love with my hair. Since I'm lovin' all over these doodles the morning after, I figured I should just get this review out into the cloud of the internet. Like I said, I've been afraid to stray the least from the variations on what I thought was the perfect cut. Now last time I was in there, Marcel stuck with my preferences and fixed up that cut perfectly. This time, however, we did something a little different and despite my hesitation, I knew Marcel would make everything right. He knew exactly what to do and did it perfectly. Everything turned out better than I could have ever hoped. This salon is adorable and the service is always fun and friendly. I never fail to have the perfect hungover conversation in there and everyone else always seems to be having a great time and yeah, everyone looks DAMN good. I love Marcel and he will do you right ;) but everyone in there was walking out with great cuts and color from all of the stylists. Deluxe provides my ideal salon experience with beautiful magazines, trashy magazines, cute decor, great products for sale, and the best damn haircuts/colors everrrrr. I just have to add real quick that I just love waitin for my color to set on the bench outside with a plastic cap on my head, a cigarette, and a People magazine. I mean, when else can you grandma-out like that and get the chance to read some gossip?! major need of a hair cut. mid back length hair. Thick and wavy. i wanted a simple Long layer cut with some wight to be taken off. and when u are looking for a good stylist they Must know what cut works for ur hair type. and not a type of cut that needs to be styled all the time to look good. So i decided to look for a new salon in Brooklyn. After reading reviews i wanted to give this place a try. Made my appointment right away. Got there about 15 minutes early but didn't feel like that was a problem. walked in and the place we empty. Which is fine by me. (no rush, better attention, zero distractions ) Bad : Here is why i give this place a 3 and not a 4 . The receptionist or stylist (didn't catch his name) was rude. Relaxing like he was home. He looked at me like i walked into the wrong place. I might not look like i run a multimillion dollar company but if I'm nice i expect the same. I'm going to pay the same as anyone that walks in there. I do not mean to be arrogant but I'm trying to make a point. I was very apologetic for being early and said i will walk around and come back. Sad part is i was not stopped to take a seat.. Pretty much said OK come back later. BIG No-No. Thank God cutiest Cupcake place across the street to stay warm until it was a good time to go back. They were great to donate a haircut to a school fundraiser and I was a lucky bidder in a silent auction so my haircut was a bargain. Somewhat of a rocky start to my experience when the original stylist Daniel they had scheduled me with cancelled our appointment by text message and voicemail in the half hour before the appointment. However, I was oblivious to the cancellation having missed these messages and wandered blithely over to the salon for my scheduled appointment anyway. After a minimum of fuss they moved the schedule around and resolved to accommodate me, and then Julian gave me the greatest hair washing / scalp massage ever. That five minutes felt as restorative as a beach vacation. I was so blissed out by the head massage that I"m now blanking out on the name of the woman who cut my hair - I think it was Joy (she has long blonde hair.) She did a really great job. (a friend of mine also got a great cut from her once so I felt like I was in good hands) She was patient with my fretting interference about not wanting too much razoring, the cut was great, the blowout was great and the end result was fabulous. On a ninety degree day with obscene humidity my hair looked flawless! now three days later, still looking good! read more
