Just got my first haircut here with Donna, and will absolutely be back. I have a curly pixie with shaved sides, and since my regular stylist moved out of NYC, I've been looking for someone who could bring my overgrown hair back to its normal look. I described the cut that I usually got and showed her some pictures, and Donna jumped right in with suggestions of how to maximize the growing out period and maintain the shape of my cut. She instantly made me feel at ease and like I was in good hands. As she buzzed and cut my hair, she gave me tips for taking care of my scalp and what products would work on my longer hair, but never pushed anything on me. This is why I love boutique salons -- since stylists aren't trying to make sales quotas with products, any recommendations feel genuine, and you never feel pressured to buy anything just to be polite. When I looked over my hair once the cut is done, Donna explained how she did the cut and how the growth would come back in -- this was so reassuring, since with my style of hair, a cut that looks 100% blended and clean after the appointment can often have a weird regrowth. Donna took all of these factors into account when giving me this cut -- I would highly recommend her if you're looking for an experienced stylist who knows her way around short hair of all textures. I also love how this salon does not price based on gender, rather by hair length. I've gone to many salons where a cut for my very short hair was $10-20 more expensive than one that would be given to a man, despite using the exact same tools and techniques. So seeing their pricing was very refreshing. My haircut came out to $55 before tip, which is definitely less than many cuts I've gotten in the past. The salon is *cash only.* In terms of what they are doing for protections during the pandemic, I felt very safe entering into the salon. Everyone wore masks, and there are multiple hand sanitizing stations, both in the actual salon and in the larger building. Not your average salon and not your average stylist. I really wanted to have my hair done but not in the same ole way. I was greeted with a friendly receptionist and was able to set an appointment with in one hour. I was so happy with my cut and color and I felt like the stylist really listened to what was important. I go to salons at most once a year for two reasons: first, I am extremely lazy so I go when I'm fed up with the length of my hair. Secondly, and mostly, because I have always had horrible experiences at salons. I am extremely low maintenance; I just need a no frills hair cut. But it was always a long drawn out process and nobody really cared about my preferences, they just did what they wanted. I found Tomahawk Salon through a search on Google Maps and it was my best salon experience! Maria helped me; she was personable, knowledgeable, and overall awesome. She understood what I wanted and went straight through without any prolonged pauses. My hair started at a little past waist length; she washed my hair, cut 10 inches off, formed layers, and blow dried, all within 40 minutes. I smiled and ran my fingers through my hair the entire way home. I will definitely come back to this salon in the future, multiple times within a calendar year. read more

Kristin is the best! I've gone to her twice now for bleaching and dying my entire head fun colors! It's always costed around $200 to bleach and dye my hair here (double-process) and for me, normally takes around 5 hours. I really love that they remember how long it takes for the entire dyeing and coloring process because they don't overbook or overlap their appointments. I also recently went in to get a short haircut with Donna. My shortest cut yet! Something I was really scared to do but Donna gave me advice and told me what she thought would look/work best with my hair. I trusted her and I came out with an amazing cut! I've gotten so many compliments since! I didn't think a short cut would work with my face shape, but Donna works magic! I haven't had many good hair salon experiences (I've always came out with cuts I either hated or didn't love) but this place has never let me down and I've had some of my best hair cutting/dyeing experiences ever here! I had made a hair appointment just for a trim, but woke up on the day of the appointment and felt compelled to chop my very long hair off. Therefore, I went in with pretty terrible, poorly prepared instructions. (MY BAD!!) Maria was patient, attentive, chatty, personable and ended up giving me just the exact haircut I wanted, even though I freaked out halfway through because I didn't understand what she was doing. Lesson learned: in future, I will just trust her to work her magic. Maria told me she was the "junior" at Tomahawk, but - trust me - she's a miracle worker. And all for $52! I really wanted to like this place. I went in for a consultation, set up an appointment several weeks in advance, and then the night before the appointment got a text from the salon asking if I could change times. I thought I would be able to shift around another appointment, but I couldn't. So the next day they text me saying that the next available day they would have is a month away, unless I wanted to come in on days I already told them I was unavailable. I get that stylists are people too, and that everyone has a personal life, but when you're dealing with customers I expect a certain level of professionalism. I also would have expected more effort in accommodating someone when you're trying to change their reservation with less than 24 hours notice, and then tell them that the only opening you have is a month away. That's just poor service in my opinion. read more

I looked around for many options when I wanted to bleach my hair to almost white. It was going to be a color correction since I already had bleached ends and had tried my own hand at doing my roots. Tomahawk was the best fit for the price, very fair, the time necessary, and with the vibe of the salon I knew it would be the right place should I want to get further cuts and colors there. Natalia is extremely knowledgeable in the ways of color correction and blonde and she gave me all the options very straight with no condescension like I experienced at some other places. I appreciated this because she really understood what I wanted and what I didn't care about. In the end, I got what I wanted for the best price and it looked fantastic and only took a few hours. I like how the salon has later hours so I could do it after work one day and it didn't inconvenience them to stay that late. Chantal, the owner and I had known each other for years, but I had never been. While they specialize in color and avant garde cuts, we fell in love with the way Donna Rae trained our hair for very stylish, yet traditional men's cuts. My hair is straight and thick. The past haircut I'd had in my hometown, Sydney, almost 2 years ago induced borderline hair PTSD, it was that bad. Not ideal for someone already suffering from chronic distrust of hairdressers. And thank the Yelp Gods for introducing me to Tomahawk. They were the only ones who called me back right away after attempting to contact 2 others in my area. They booked me in for an appointment with Kristen and sent me a text the day before to confirm. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed. Their super funky decor that's reminiscent of a Punk Rock - loving friend's garage without sacrificing cleanliness or professionalism made me feel like I was among friends. But friends who seriously knew hair (they do some crazy styles and colours - look on their website). Greeted at the door with a smile, the girl at the front desk immediately hung up my jacket and offered me water. Kristen was ready for me right away and not only was she super sweet, she listened to exactly what I wanted, fixed up all the botched layers from my previous guy and I left with the EXACT style I showed her of my 'hairspiration'.
