We arrived in time but they left prior to the dot and then guy went to use the bathroom which delayed some more. Then when he came out, he said we couldn't go because we were late. We said we were t late, we saw them leave but then he rushed to the bathroom. So after some back and forth, the boss told them to halt and for the attendant to take us to the group. Boss went above and beyond for us. Mind you, I also booked for wrong date and the boss changed it for us as there were no refunds and we were only driving through Oregon. Fun and unique experience. It may leave your legs a little wobbly if you aren't used to peddling for 9+ miles so stretch up and pace yourself. You'll definitely have to work together to peddling the bike even though its only a 1-2% grade. There are 2 take off points so be aware of which tour you booked else you may miss your reservation. The two launch points are about a 24 minute drive apart. Bay city takes off: 5400 Hayes Oyster Drive, Bay City Oregon Wheeler takes off: Hemlock Ave and Highway 101, Wheeler Oregon On your tour, you'll have 2 guides - one in front and one in back. They will help direct traffic and keep the pace (sort of). Otherwise just enjoy the view and peddling through nature for 2 hours. Complaint: I was distraught that you will sign a terms & conditions form not once but TWICE with one statement that says "I will not intentionally bump other Railriders" and yet our car was full steam rammed into by the car behind us which ejected the back seats and ended up leaving all of my family with various bruises (legs and arms mostly). Luckily there were no serious injuries, but it could have turned out really bad. Our guides were very apologetic and took the time to check on us but there was nary a warning given to the car behind us who continued to banter us the whole 4 miles back to our starting point - at one point, even blaming us for the incident "they deserved to get hit because they didn't put up their fists". Yo, do you even drive bro? Do you willingly rear-end cars for fun? While we took the blunt of the force, his crash was very much also felt in different intensities through to the front (~4 more cars). Keeping a safe distance is very key - make that VERY CLEAR to the car behind you. I strongly believe that ORR needs to change their rules from "love taps and pushes are okay" to "keep a one car distance. if you happen to love tap or push the car in front, please slow down." read more

We had a blast biking the rail with the Oregon Coast Railriders! 11 miles from Bay City to Tillamook and back on a beautiful (closed to trains) rail trail were easily biked by young and old. There was an older lady behind us who loved pulling the brake. On the way back we made sure we pushed her along. Haha. On the ride we viewed the beauty of the Pacific coast, saw a wide variety of flowers, and crossed many historical bridges (with a tight hold on the cell phone). The employees stressed safety (which was reassuring) and were funny while constantly making sure we comfortable with our seats. Guide was incredibly attentive and quick to jump off his ride and help the peddlers. Great concept and enjoyed the 14 mile stretch we explored. Would try wheeler next time as Tillamook side near Bay City is full of aromas. Riders gather in groups of 4. You ride as a pack down the train tracks. My daughter booked this for us as a Mother's Day present. This was the first summer weekend we could do it. We did the 3 pm trip out of Wheeler. The weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful! It is a bit of a workout for your legs. It was just the two of us in a "car". If you had four people, it wouldn't be as challenging. The guides were great. Very safe. I highly recommend. Would be a great family activity as they have several cars in the group. We also visited Nehalem Bay Winery, for a picnic lunch, beforehand. Their fruit wines are amazing and the tasting fee is only $5 for any/all of their wines! read more

Past oyster middens, along the beautiful bay, through sloughs, past the ghost town of Idaville, behind the cheese factory, and over historic bridges, the Oregon Coast's newest tourist attraction is already a big hit! Oregon Coast Railriders is a pedal powered trip along the abandoned railroad between Bay City and Tillamook. The tour starts in Bay City, on Hays Road next to Pacific Oysters. After a brief safety briefing, four people ride a customized pedal powered cart that runs on the rail road! The company has about ten carts available, and runs three tours per a day. The pros of this tour are many. Lots of birds and animals to see from the wild to the farmed. On a Thursday morning in late spring, we saw at least four species of song birds, eagles, lizards, cattle, horses and mules. No doubt much more can be seen at different times of the day. The fresh air and exercise are definitely another plus on this awesome tour as it passes incredible vistas over the bay. An average trip is 11 miles and takes about two hours. Two professional tour guides do a great job of escorting the tour, and blocking traffic when the rails and road intersect. The cons of this tour are unfortunately many, but for a new business more then acceptable. The biggest problem is that the carts are a bit awkward at first. It might take the first stop to get the seats adjusted correctly, and the recumbent bicycling position can be awkward to those not used to it. All personal items should be well secured! Especially over the rail road bridges where dropped cell phones could easily decide to go swimming! Those with DSLrs and long lenses will not have a good time - the recumbent position makes carrying and shooting them near impossible. Go with a small cheap camera with a wrist strap for those great photos. While the hills are minimal to the point of being non-existent, there are a few sections that can be hard to pedal. Especially if you're not in the greatest shape. Luckily with four people pedaling, you can occasionally take a break. The parking and bathroom conditions are... primitive at best. For those who are anti-porta-potty you might want to go before you go! I'm glad that I've been able to take this tour before it becomes even more popular. Once summer comes, they will be full! So go now, go often, and enjoy Oregon Coast Railriders! read more

An all around enjoyable 2.5 hour ride on an abandoned railroad track in a 4-seater recumbent bike peddle car. You ride for 6 miles, then turn around and ride 6 miles back. My complaints are few. First, the turn around point is a small industrial area in the middle of nowhere. For those wishing to avoid port-a- potties, the restroom in the nearby park has no toilet paper, no soap, and no paper towels. Hell, the stalls didn't have doors. So you might want to take your chances with the portable johns. Also, there are no establishments at the turn around from which you can get something cold to drink. Our guide told us we could take our chances with a vending machine across the street, but it had a tendency to eat people's money. read more

We loved our trip out with RailRiders. We were lucky enough to have one of the guides, Nate, on our cart and he was amazing and hilarious. I believe they said they added an additional mile to the trip within the last week so it's a nice 13 mile ride. There's a few hills but nothing steep by any means. If you're not a regular recumbent bike rider, you'll feel it!! I sure do! Pro tips: make sure you bring some extra cash to tip your guides. We didn't have any and felt bad that all we could give Nate was praise. Oh, and make sure you have some cash as occasionally an icecream truck will be hanging out at the turn around point. We sadly missed out on Popsicles for the way back cause we didn't know. read more

The ride is about 50 minutes out in mostly flat tracks over some bridges and by farms and behind the cheese factory! It was an unique experience in Tillamook area. This ride took us through the woods and offered great view of the landscape. It was 6 miles up and 6 miles down trip. So prepared to flex your quads and calves pedalling. Or if you are gassed out half way like me, they will be happy to give you a push. A bottle of water and a snack would be handy too. read more

I wanted to love this experience, and so did my husband - it was his birthday surprise. But we both found it a bit ordinary. Basically, an 11-mile bike ride. Maybe it was the time of year (late September), but the scenery along the tracks wasn't much to speak of. We were just the two of us on our "car" which meant, although we had half the weight, we were each responsible for moving 50% of the weight of the cart instead of 25%. Not a problem for us, but it could be for others. Decide how many layers you need to be comfortable, then subtract one because you will warm up quickly. I give these young entrepreneurs credit - they've obviously worked hard to make this venture happen. I'm sure they'll continue to improve it over time. read more

My 2 other riders felt that it was exhausting (and they're in way better shape than I am), the complained often of their legs being tired...LOL! I swear I peddled the whole time and it really wasn't too bad. I obviously enjoyed it more than they did. This is our second Railrider's experience, the other was in Joseph. This event was very similar in set up, however there were some differences and opportunities worth noting. The grade is minimal, but it is an 12 mile ride so for those that don't bike a lot this is a pretty good work out and the pace in Tillamook was much faster. Also, in Joseph the trip paused at the half way point for 15 minutes to allow a little snack/stretch/break. The Tillamook ride was very rushed. We rode with one of the guides who was fine but very quiet- it was her last of the season and it was clear she was tired. Her silence forced silence on our family's experience. The scenery was lovely with rivers, dairies and a few bridges crossed. They were very safety conscious. All in all we would recommend this event for families. read more

We had a great time riding the rails with the Oregon Coast Railriders! It is 11 miles from Bay City to Tillamook and back on an amazingly beautiful trail that is fairly easily rode by old and young. We could see a wide variety of scenes including farmland, waterways, countryside, flowers, and bridges. The Oregon Coast Railriders is a pedal powered trip along the abandoned railroad that begins in Bay City and travels 5-1/2 miles before turning around and heading back. The entire tour takes about two hours round trip. After a very brief safety meeting, somewhere between two and four people ride a customized pedal powered cart that runs on the railroad! There are about ten rail cars available, and there are three tours per day. Two professional tour guides do a great job of escorting the tour, giving information, and blocking traffic when the rails and road intersect. The only problem I really encountered is that the seats are a bit uncomfortable, but since the business is new they are still trying to work the 'bugs' out. There is a little learning curve to getting the seat adjusted correctly, and the recumbent bicycling position can be awkward at first but you get used to it quickly. All personal items should be well secured, especially over the railroad bridges where dropped cell phones might not be easily retrieved. If you take your DSLR with a long lens, you might have a struggle as the recumbent position makes carrying and shooting them difficult. It might be easier to use a small point and shoot with a wrist strap for those great photos. While the hills are minimal to the point of being non-existent, there are a few sections that can be hard to pedal, especially if you're not in the greatest shape. We only had two on our car so there was no taking a break. I have had both of my knees replaced and it was quite a workout but very doable. If you are averse to porta-potty usage, make sure and find a bathroom before coming into Bay City as that is your only option at the beginning of the tour and at the the turn-around point. We rode the rails on the Friday before Labor Day. . . we were a group of 10 - ranging from 4 years old to 70+. . . We had a great time, and made a lot of memories. I brought my camera (which was a mistake - too heavy). . . It rained. Sometimes it was dry, but many times it was very wet. One of the tour guides loaned me a plastic grocery bag to keep my camera dry, or it would have been a loss. We were all totally soaked by the time it was over. This was an 11 mile trip - 5.5 miles in each direction. There was an outhouse at each end. Both were filled to the top and smelled like nothing you would like to experience. . . I can only imagine what the people experienced during the holiday weekend. I would also highly recommend that you keep your feet in the stirrups. . . The tour guides didn't seem to think it was important, however, I almost fell forward 4 times before I learned! In all, we had a great time - rolling through the cow pastures and getting traffic to stop for us. Who knew we would be the ones that rolled through the closed gate with the "ding, ding, ding" and the big yellow light? Be sure to dress for rain - if there is any chance. . . and wear clothes that are flexible and comfortable. Don't try to be fashion conscience - everything gets covered by the big yellow vests anyway . . Enjoy! read more
