After a disastrous Thanksgiving dinner, I was looking for a new butcher. I didn't want to risk investing a lot of money in our traditional Christmas Day Prime Rib Dinner only to have poor results. So I checked YELP for recommendations and discovered Joyview Meat Market, and I'm glad I did. The first thing that hit me when I walked in the door was the smell of burning wood. It gave the place the feeling of being in a lodge with a cozy fire. Since it was Christmas Eve, the place was busy, but there was plenty of staff on hand to move things along. Everyone was happy and pleasant. Maybe it was the season, but I'm sure a good part of it was meeting and greeting loyal customers. Many of the people I met had been coming to Joyview for years. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner Greg. I told him I was a new customer, and we ended up talking shop for quite some time. He's very proud of being part of four generations of butchers and owning and operating his fine shop. The market had a wide variety of meats on display. Everything seemed very high quality. I was pleasantly surprised to see Srodek's pierogi in the refrigerated case since my family loves them. Oh, and if you're looking for great smoked kielbasa, Joyview makes their own kielbasa (fresh and smoked), and it's wonderful. So, back to the Prime Rib, the star of our Christmas Day dinner. It was fabulous - so juicy and tender. It just melted in our mouths. Everyone raved about it so much that we have decided to make Joyview Meat Market our only destination for high quality meat. A great place for fresh meat and other supply you might need from everything from a barbecue to a nice dinner. Only one red flag That I notice,was that some of the workers handle fresh raw meat with their hand. Area'such as the cash register, case handles ,other area's which are not wipe continuously with some type of anti bacteria or bleach spray as needed is suspect and potential issues. The wayne County health apartment implements that you need to do these requirements. And cross-contamination is a big issue and very prevalent and frequent among meat processors and butchers. Nature of the beast. I hate to write this review but this is not the only time this has happened. Using some type of gloves and then changing them and also washing your hands in between for at least 20 seconds was soap and warm water would be much appreciated. Have been shopping at joyview nearly 40 years the best butcher in Michigan hands down! They not only make their own fresh keilbasa, they make home made sausages of varing types , fresh baked goods and breads. A family run business who takes pride i their community. Their staff is one of the most friendly and knowledgeable. Dont let the lines fool you they have fast service and friendly faces. Oh and the meat is amazing!! read more

Thursday before Christmas, they opened a wee bit early with a line all along the east wall outside the store. Parking was limited because it was so busy. Everyone in line cooperated, grabbed a number on the way in, and waited. I got smoked and fresh kielbasa, extra hot horseradish, and some pierogi and city chicken. My fridge is full of great scents of garlic right now, as the kielbasa gets used up. Staff was organized, having fun, and very efficient. I highly recommend this store read more

When I'm back in Detroit I come bring a cooler to take back local foods I can't get in St. Louis. Joy View can fill many of my needs. I grew up a little over a mile from here there were 5 or 6 Polish meat markets. Joy View is the only one left. A piece of my past that doesn't disappoint. House-made Kielbasa, fresh cuts of meat, specialty cuts like City Chicken. Thy also carry Kowalski hot dogs and lunchmeat, Srodek pierogi, National Coney Island Chili and local bakery items like Kolachki. Family owned and operated it shows. Okay. This place is not fancy but who cares. It's legit an old school butcher. I went today because I was looking for fresh meat and wanted to support a local business. I got there early since I was out and I read that it gets busy on Saturday. Plus, they are being responsible and only let 10 people in the store at one time. I arrived about 10 minutes before opening and was pleased to see a line. That tells you all you need to know about a business. I was excited to be able to try their smoked kielbasa and fresh kielbasa. They had the usual meat. I also wanted to get a smallish whole chicken. This place is a gem. The workers are all so nice. The meat products are fresh. I will definitely be back. This place has been in business since 1969. They must be doing something right. I am cooking the pork steak I got today. They were meaty. They just lost a long time customer. Called last week to ask if they had any fresh chicken kielbasa available and the young man said "no." Asked if any was going to be made and he replied with "I don't know.". Asked him if he could please ask someone else there more knowledgeable and he wouldn't. Absolutely the BEST home-made kielbasa ever!! Even better that the now sadly closed Markowitz' on Michigan Ave. Other great meats as well and incredibly friendly service. You want coffee? Urn at the end of the meat case. Cream? Inside the cooler. They might even have some fresh donuts, which they gladly share. I'm so happy I decided to stop in out of curiosity. This reminds me of the neighborhood market when I was growing up. Customer service is amazing; they were welcoming even when I said I just wanted to look around, they didn't make me feel bad but engaged in fun conversation & answered any questions I had. I bought some things & have been a returning customer ever since. I thought I could stop in on my way home from work but they close before I can make it there, so now I make a once a week or every so stop to pick up what I need. Their fresh baked bread is amazing & if you are slow at eating a loaf (as I am), be sure to freeze their bread because not only is it fresh but it is free of additives & preservatives. I love it! Their meats are awesome too; great quality. The aroma when you enter is never funky, but just fresh! This is the real McCoy. Old school butchers at their best. No not dogs or soy bean burgers in this joint. Just 4 or 5 big Polish guys behind the counter serving fresh meat and some of the best kielbasa I've ever had in my life. What can I do fer...{stopping and looking at my petite Japanese wife} hold a sec. I'm gonna ask her first, she's cuter den you. What can I git ya, darling. And don't be shy about what you buy. I like my women built fer comfort not fer speed, darlin" You get the idea. The place is amazing. My only regret is I'm sucked into the deals at Costco sometimes and I don't support these guys enough. I truly recommend you do if you want some excellent meat, the way it used to be sold in the old days when you knew the butcher behind the counter - with personality. KIEL-BAAAAAH-SAAAAAAAAH. Ahhhhhh. Though I haven't had landmeat in a while, I have to admit that this smokey, seasoned tube of meat smelled pretty damn good. The kielbasa is homemade and though regular old kielbasa is the best-seller in this store, the chicken variety is righteous. My husband is a big fan, and actually prefers the chicken kind over the original. Small (breakfast) sausage links aren't homemade, however they are super fresh and very good. I add them to breakfast sandwiches on those mornings when I'm being nice and I actually make breakfast sandwiches, and my husband loves them. What is homemade is their ground breakfast sausage and some pretty damn good spicy dried hotlinks, both of which are deelish! I spotted some smoked porkchops here which I need to have my husband try next. I prefer buying meat at smaller independent stores rather than at big grocers, and I pick it up here when we are in the area. We happen to frequent a certain delicious restaurant neighboring this shop, so I am happy to have found Joy View Meat Market to supply my husband with his protein. read more

My family moved to Northern California twelve years ago from our homes in Detroit and Pittsfield Township. Although we love living in California, no meat market here can begin to compare with Joy View. They are simply the best. The kielbasa is wonderful. The krakowska is heavenly. When we I visit the old neighborhood, or when our adult sons return, we bring home four to six links of kielbasa. Suffice it to write, the airplane overhead bins never smelled so good from what our family calls "precious cargo". We also miss Aunt Bernice, a beautiful Polish-American woman with abundant love for everyone. She passed away recently after having worked the counter at Joy View for many years. We LOVE this place! My partner and I have lived in Redford for 11 years but we shopped at Joyview for years before that when we still lived in northwest Detroit. I grew up in a very Polish neighborhood in Chicago that had a corner butcher shop very reminiscent of Joyview. So it was a real pleasure to find a place that not only filled the memories of that place and those days in Chicago, but ACTUALLY DELIVERED! My partner and I both love your smoked sausage and the pierogi you have are just the best. (It's no wonder those are the ones that St. Robert Bellarmine serves during Lent at their Fish Fry on Pierogi Night.) In addition, you make the absolute best fresh kielbasa I have had since I left Chicago! Add to that you home made soups -- especially the Dill Pickle -- and I could just go on and on and on. I needed 12 steaks to grill for a BBQ at my house. When I asked the real, old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness butchers for help in choosing, they pointed me to amazing looking Porterhouse steaks. I didn't want the hassle of carving them off the bone after grilling, so I inquired about the NY Strip steaks. When I said I needed 12 of them, the owner, Greg, said, "you'd be better off buying the whole strip and we'll butcher it for you." Well, I got 15 beautiful, thick NY Strip steaks (plus an extra end trim "for the dog") from my strip, which they butchered by hand - an almost lost art. Dividing the entire strip by the 15 steaks it yielded an average cost of only $5.64 per steak - extraordinary quality at a phenomenal price! The best was my guests' reaction - including three people who exclaimed that they were the best steaks they had ever had in their entire lives. I also served Joyview's house-smoked kielbasa - a taste treat beyond compare. I bought two double-links and there were NO leftovers to put away. If you haven't been in to see 'da guys since Memorial Day, you'll be pleased to discover, as I did yesterday, that they have busted out the wall and doubled the size of Joyview - practically at the corner of the northeast intersection of Telegraph and Joy Roads (only about three buildings down from the 7-11). Skip the chain grocery store and come to a real butcher shop - you won't regret it. These guys are a dying breed. Butchers that actually know what they are doing. I was on the search for unsmoked pork shanks, my first stop was recommended to my by a friend and was a waste of time, not helpful, and a little annoyed by my presence. I though this was odd as i was trying to purchase something, but maybe I am just crazy. I found Joy view Meat Market through Yelp and decided to go the extra distance. This is a little place with a lot of characters. Not only did I get my pork shanks, I bought some of their home made kielbasa and some other random deli cuts. Every thing was great, especially the kielbasa!!! I enjoyed talking to a seasoned Butcher instead of some uninformed guy in a white coat acting as a butcher. read more

You don't have to go to Hamtramck to find great Polish food, especially since they sell pierogi and soup made by Srodek's. Joy View smokes their meat onsite, as evident by the fragrant smoke billowing from the rear of the building. Fresh and smoked kielbasa available but I'm not sure if they have kiszka. They do have REAL BACON by the pound. They also have a small section of dry goods, bread, kolaczki, and fresh produce but half the store is meat. Lots of beef, pork, chicken, ham, and sliced deli meat for a fair price. read more

I look for 2 things when I buy my meat the consistency of the product, and of course Choice or higher quality which Joyview seems to never fail with every time I enter their facility. When I purchase my meat I know everything is fresh from that morning cut at the same market. I leave and feel like I receive a discount every time after I see how much meat I get for weekly meals for 2 people cost me under $50. The employees are excellent on customer service never waiting around on anyone, not to mention they will package and portion out your cuts however you want unlike most markets. This traditional polish market also specializes in their homemade fresh and smoked kielbasa. The only place I know in the area that smokes their own product. read more
