JP McHale markets themselves as the regional pest control company that has superior technology and service. They use motion sensors that are supposedly more effective than other companies and are supposed to make the customer feel valued. We just purchased a home and decided to go with them for their pest control package. The sales person said you see any bug, call us and we take care of it. Great. So they scheduled a 7 day follow up to come check the bate traps that were set up after the initial visit and installations, and a tech came in to inspect. We get to the first bate trap in our utility closet, and he goes "yea so this has some activity, it's chewed up and the sensor has some activity so ill reset it and change the bate". I assumed he would go over next steps at the end. Another bate trap had the same thing. So he goes alright great, everything's reset so i'll get out of here. I stopped him and was like whoa whoa, it said activity, and the bates were eaten, shouldn't you guys now...address it? Also why was there motion detected and neither you guys nor us received a notification?? He was just as confused as I was. He said usually there would be an inspection and I would have to call, but he was going to follow up with his supervisor. He comes back in from his van to say "ahh so it could just be bugs that ate it, not rodents, and the motion needs to go off 3 days in a row for us to be notified". Ok 1) we have PEST control so it's not "just bugs", it should be "oh it's bugs, let's address it". 2) I then asked to see the activity and it was going off multiple times for about a week. Thanks for letting us know guys. We called our salesperson and gave all this feedback and he said he's heard of this happening..and he would call them right away. Well it's the end of the night and no one called - great customer service and product guys. If your product isn't going to be superior, we will just switch to a cheaper provider like terminix. We also had problems with ground dwelling stinging wasps or whatever in the yard and they have a treatment that eradicates them. Our service person, Juan, is very good. I called the company and they sent a technician out to evaluate the squirrel intrusion into the soffit and attic space of my one story cabin. No ladder, no examination of entry point and I was given a written proposal for work at a fee of $1,500 , No trapping of the squirrel was included. Other pest management services gave an estimate of $170-$300 depending on the number of squirrels and holes to be repaired This was so outrageously exaggerated a cost I could only conclude it to be considered an abuse of a senior citizen or a scam. read more

We were a customer in 2020/2021 and it was an overall bad experience. Initially the set up was easy and they came out quickly after I found a tick on me last March. We had scheduled service every other month and paid upfront. After the second treatment they didn't show up for the third. Had to call repeatedly and finally they came almost two months late. Same thing happened with the final treatment. By the time someone actually called me back it was already well into the Fall so I asked that we be refunded. It took then weeks of follow up calls to get a refund. In 2021 we received a notice that we would be auto renewed. I called and left a voicemail that we would be cancelling, and never received a call back. After finding another tick on a family member in late April we considered having them come out for a one time treatment, and see how they performed. I was told by a sales rep that we were still customers and should get our first service in April...and it was already the END OF APRIL! So they already would have missed their first treatment. I put in writing that we were cancelling. Then just a week ago (now June) a spray tech showed up to spray our house! I kindly asked them to leave since we changed providers. Two customer service people then reached out, but obviously did not talk to each other or look at our customer notes. Had to repeat myself several times. Yesterday, Scott, came to my home first thing Saturday morning. Two weeks ago, I had discovered a Yellow Jacket nest in the wood paneling next to the chimney. He was the fourth technician who had come from JP McHale pest Management to help me completely eliminate the Yellow Jackets. The first time was on July 30th when the exterior access point that the YJ's were entering was treated. Unfortunately, that resulted in close to sixty YJs dying or lying in a dying state in my den. Fortunately, another tech helped me dispose of them since I am allergic, and tape up entire points with painters tape. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets continued to keep coming into my den. I contacted Nathan, a Supervisor. I suggested treating this problem from the inside out because we have so many access points in the panels and near the chimney. That is when my hero, Scott, showed up yesterday!! He studying the situation thoroughly and used the right chemicals inside the den and the problem is 95% better!! I know this is about progress not perfection but the JP McHale has my definitely gained my loyalty. I valued each technician who was sent here and know the company was committed to solving my pest issue promptly and thoroughly. They also help us deal with mice too. I have been using the company since we purchased our property a few years ago. They have the absolute worst customer service and have ever experienced. I have called them multiple times requesting a service report when a technician comes to our property. We have numerous buildings and the techs never know where they are supposed to be working and what they are doing. We have been using the same exterminator since we bought the house 12 years ago. They were great. Professional, prompt and effective. Then they were acquired by JP McHale and service has been terrible. I have been bit by ticks many times, so I upgraded my service in 2023 from monthly to biweekly. In early September, I broke out with at least 50 bites. I had stepped on a nest of tick larvae. McHale missed 3 treatments and no spraying for SIX WEEKS in late August and early September (prime tick season). They are buying great companies and raising rates and ruining the customer experience. read more

Short story So in summation, you are giving me less than 24 hours notice to either pay you $400 or someone will be on my property removing termite prevention materials between the hours of 8am-6pm and my dog has to be crated that entire time just in case. Yeah I'm not too happy. Especially since they clearly have my email address smh.... Full Story. I understand my situation might be uncommon but I can't believe it's unique. My wife and I bought a house last year and part of the closing agreement was termite treatment for the house. The previous owners took care of it and assured us it was a one time treatment, we would not have to deal with anything. Yesterday I received the email (attached) saying my service would be shut off and someone would come by today to collect their equipment. I got on the phone with customer service, to their credit I didn't wait on hold very long at all and spoke with the first person who said there had clearly been a mistake and transferred me to sales to straighten this up. Again, not a long wait time at all. I explained to this person that we bought the house and she asked would I like to renew for $400. I asked, how do I know how effective these things are? Have they done their job already? She said they run annual tests. So I asked for the result of the last test. She said she didn't have it. So I asked if they can test tomorrow instead of removing it so I can make an informed decision. She said hold on let me double check on the previous tests. The result was "minimal activity." So I asked, can I leave the stations in and decide in a couple of days whether I would like to pay $400 or not? She said no they are coming tomorrow to remove them. So I asked, "It sounds like my options are to either give you $400 now or you take them away and then if I want to renew at a later date I have to pay a transfer fee and reinstallation?" So she relented and said she will make a note that the customer might renew, just remove the bait from the traps, not the traps themselves. The last thing I really didn't like was, in the same email, it mentions if I have a dog make sure it is not in a place the tech will need access. So I asked the lady what time someone would be by and she couldn't give me an answer. My former technician who knew my house, my property and was comfortable with my pets is suddenly gone. Now someone I don't know shows up unannounced at random times and sprays chemicals I never asked for and don't need. I have given them multiple chances by setting up a regular day and time each month so I can be home to help with my dog. They continue to show up randomly whenever they feel like it and then send me a bill. No thanks. Cancelling service immediately. I wasn't going to write this, having spoken with one of the managers or owners who said this was resolved. However, JP McHale started up with my neighbor again, with false accusations, so here goes. The other day my wife and I noticed a thick plume of insecticide drifting over our pollinator garden. Another neighbor had the same thing happen, with a thick plume blowing over and into their house without warning. We all tried to close our windows in time, but too late. I walked over to ask the neighbor - the customer of JP McHale - what insecticide they were using. The applicator approached in an aggressive way, getting in my face for no reason. He didn't know, other than it was "organic." Then he said, "What are you doing? Why don't you get the f#ck out of here. Get the f#ck out of here." Apparently the applicator had already had a hostile dispute with another neighbor. I'm a former pesticide applicator and currently work for a state agency that deals with pesticides. I know pesticide. Organic is OK if, and that's a big IF, it's applied correctly. Organic oil based insecticides should NOT be applied directly to flowers (it was) or when pollinators are most active (they were). Insecticide application should NOT create a thick plume of fog over the neighbor's houses (it did). Organic insecticide should be applied early in the am or in the evening when pollinators are less or not active. Organic insecticide (in this case EcoVia according to one rep, TickKilz according to another - the company doesn't even know what they use) IS TOXIC TO INSECTS, just about all insects, including native bees (ground nesting bees, it's right on the label). This company needs to train its applicators to know what they're using, how to apply it correctly, and how to explain it to neighbors. To top it off, I and the neighbors were called "racist," when in fact we saw and smelled the vapor cloud and walked over before seeing the applicator, and before the applicator got up in my face in a threatening manner. (I'm 64 years old, 5' 5" tall, and no threat to anyone.) I would never use this company. There are better ones. Organic insecticides are OK, but only if applicators apply them correctly. While not toxic to people, applied incorrectly they are toxic to pollinators. Other companies apply these organic oils correctly, and have courteous, professional staff. Not JP McHale. I have a fairly pricey annual contract. I mainly hire them to put powder into carpenter bee holes to kill the larvae. Some mouse traps. Made an appointment weeks ahead asking that they bring the equipment to reach the holes on the second floor dormer which is basically a long pole that you pump the dust upward from a can. I remind them multiple times because this was why I stopped using them years ago at another address. Today is no different. When I called to make another appointment to do what I asked for today their operator asks me, "Why didn't he have the long pole?" I wondered the same. "If he needs a ladder it will be 50 dollars more plus tax. " Imagine a painter or electrician saying "If I need to bring a ladder it'll cost you more." I'd leave zero stars if I could. After finding mouse droppings, we called JP McHale for a quote. They were very responsive, even calling me back to see if I had more questions. They talked us into the annual plan that includes unlimited visits, as opposed to the cost of just the initial visit, which includes a follow-up visit one week later. Immediately after signing up for the year plan, they stopped being helpful. I had to chase them down for answers to basic questions about what their approach was. Their main sales guy, Eric, has never called me back since we signed up. Someone came and laid a bunch of traps, then we waited one week for the follow-up--all the while seeing mice running around our house! The follow-up appointment showed ZERO POISON WAS EATEN AND ZERO MICE WERE KILLED FROM SNAP TRAPS. We're working on a refund but still might have to pay about $300 for the visits, which is a total rip-off. How can a pest management company use products and a strategy that has ZERO effect? Well, I was charged for the new system, without knowing so their job is easier, but when the system detects mice you would think they would send someone asap. Not happy, and doing my best to be patient, but in all honesty, I wish I could get my money back on the annual contract and call someone else. Unfortunately all the technician did was spray and that's not how you get rid of carpenter ants. I later was told that it was "too cold" in March to do what they would normally do for carpenter ants. That's fine, but it should have been explained, since the guy came out twice to spray around and that didn't help. Later they sent out a supervisor and he was very good and did a lot of explaining and did a more thorough inspection. He told us to wait 2 weeks, so we did, and still the carpenter ants are in the house, at least 20-30 or more per day. We called again and had to wait a week, then a week later we get a "robo call" that the regular technician called out sick and we have to call to reschedule. When I called, I was told it would be another 8 days before someone could come. At that point, it will be 2 months of carpenter ants so I've given up on hoping that they are the same as they were 30 years ago. JP McHale's services offer poor value for the services provided. This firm is not responsive or slow to respond customer requests. In the event you are able to schedule a service for pest spraying inside the home (which can take 2-4 weeks to get a slot), they will send you an automated phone call to cancel the morning of the appointment. I've been a loyal JP McHale customer for many years and have purchased their Guardian plan each year, which is roughly $650 each year. Other than quarterly routine inspections, there was only one time in which I've asked them to spray for pests inside my home. This appointment was scheduled for June 1st, 2021 and they have failed to provide a technician to provide a basic spraying inside the home. After I waited weeks to have the 6/1/2021 appointment scheduled, I received an automated message that it was canceled. After calling them to reschedule, I was told to wait another 2-4 weeks for another appointment. At this point, it may take months to get JP McHale to perform a service obligation in accordance with their Guardian plan since they can just perform the following in a circle: 1) Have client wait weeks for an appointment 2) Send automated phone call to client to cancel on day of appointment 3) Repeat the process for the client by going back to step 1. In short, this firm will ask you to wait weeks for an appointment, cancel the appointment via automated phone call the day of, and then ask you to wait a couple more weeks while customers pay the annual subscription each year. I would highly suggest other homeowners find alternative pest providers that actually have technicians that can perform services and honor their appointment. Otherwise the annual service fee you pay each year is not worth much. MANAGEMENT REVIEW & UPDATE You will get a response stating that there are no available managers to assist with your issue. Even if you reach a member of management (which called me several hours after I raised this issue), they are unable to assist as well. They just say "I don't have anyone any available technicians" to honor their appointments. This business has grown too big and they are not staffed appropriately to serve their customers. They simply charge annual fees without performing work they are obligated to perform under their service agreements such as the Guardian plan. Wow how things have changed - FOR THE WORSE! I have worked with the McHale family for 25+ years and they always went the extra mile. On the rare occasion when a problem could not otherwise be resolved I reached out to Doug or Jim Mc Hale who then intervened and resolved my problem to complete satisfaction. Well the business was recently sold and new ownership is doubling prices from one season to the next. That is after many years of steady consistent pricing. Being in business I understand cost increases but after many years of steady consistent pricing and then suddenly ambushing with a doubling of prices and an unwillingness to negotiate or counter offer is a take it or leave it attitude. This is the culmination of what began after receiving a Jan 25 email initiated by J P Mc Hale looking for me to renew and then dragging their feet being unresponsive for 4+ weeks and then following up reaching out again ultimately reaching out to Jim McHale only to be told Jim Mc Hale does not handle day to day operations any longer. The new dictator regime telling me now it is time to part ways. Quite a stunning attitude new ownership has! There are plenty of people who also thought they could not be replaced that are now buried under tombstones that have been successfully replaced! Life goes on and so am I. So should you. J P McHale IS NOT what it was. Speaking with friends the last few days reveals the chatter around town confirms my impression of this sudden and abrupt change. I suggest you move on - there are plenty of viable services with a correct attitude towards customer service, customer retention and fair pricing. I would leave a zero if I could. Called for a home inspection for ants. I was promised a complete inspection and remedy . The tech arrived late and gave an attitude during his visit. He was at my home for a total of three minutes, sprayed in one area and left. I still have an ant problem and was charged an exorbitant amount. I used OCON which I liked, but it was then purchased by McHale. Different person came each time, which made me feel there was no continuity or familiarity with my residential account. My daughter initially hired them at my recommendation (when it was OCON) and when it became McHale, experienced the same chronic lateness. She used them for her home & veterinary practice and they dropped the ball there also. Her business account is located on adjoining properties and McHale stated that their computer couldn't deal with two different street numbers and that was the "reason" for their screwing up service at the vet hospital.
